Rob Reiner's death cast a different light on the friendship he shared with Michael Douglas, but the connection between the two men was forged long before their relationship became part of a tragic story.
Michael has now revealed that some of their most meaningful conversations centered on their sons and the pain of watching them struggle with drug issues.
In his memoir, "One ****** uva Ride," the 82-year-old recalled a friendship where two fathers could speak openly when neither had easy answers.

For Michael Douglas, the family struggle was deeply personal. His son Cameron Douglas battled addiction and eventually served seven years in federal prison on drug-related charges.

Michael Douglas has recalled how he once had a "heartbreaking confessional" with Rob Reiner regarding their sons' troubles.
The This Is Spinal Tap director, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home last December.
The couple's son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder over their deaths. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial in custody.
On Monday, The Los Angeles Times published an excerpt from Michael's new memoir, One ******* uva Ride, in which the Oscar-winning actor described a conversation he once had with Reiner.
"We both had sons with serious drug issues and we both, at times, had been at the end of our rope," he writes, according to the outlet. "It was a heartbreaking confessional for us, but I know we gave each other some measure of comfort during the hard times."
Previously, Rob had discussed Nick's substance abuse issues and rehab stays. The pair made the 2015 film, Being Charlie, about his experiences.

C3.ai's fiscal first-quarter results replaced a speculative earnings setup with a mixed turnaround test. The company reported $52.4 million of revenue, within its $50 million to $54 million guidance but down 25% from $70.3 million a year earlier. Subscription revenue was $49.2 million, or 94% of total revenue, compared with $60.3 million in the prior-year quarter. C3.ai, Inc. (NYSE:AI) therefore stabilized within management's lowered expectations, without yet returning to growth.
There were encouraging operating signals. Bookings increased 73% sequentially, the company signed 22 agreements, and free cash flow improved to positive $2.1 million from negative $34.3 million a year earlier. Its non-GAAP operating loss narrowed 33% sequentially to $36.2 million. Management guided fiscal second-quarter revenue to $51 million to $55 million and maintained full-year revenue guidance of $210 million to $240 million. Still, both ranges imply that a rapid return to the prior year's scale is unlikely.
Those figures complicate, rather than erase, DA Davidson ***** yst Lucky Schreiner's bearish case. In a September 1 note, Schreiner reiterated an Underperform rating and a $7 target, while seeing possible professional-services upside and stabilization in subscription trends. Revenue landed near the middle of guidance, and subscription revenue represented a larger share of the mix. However, stabilization at a much lower level is not the same as renewed expansion.
The bearish evidence remains substantial. GAAP gross margin was only 32%, and the company posted a $92.8 million GAAP net loss, or $0.60 per share. C3.ai, Inc. (NYSE:AI) still competes against cloud providers, data platforms, and customers building applications internally. Better bookings and cash flow must translate into durable subscription growth and improving margins before the results demonstrate an economic turnaround.
Hedge funds showed cautious improvement rather than conviction. Insider Monkey counted 29 hedge funds holding the shares in Q2, up from 25 in Q1. Point72 ***** et Management increased its position 154% to 568,406 shares. That is notable, but 13F filings reveal positions rather than investment rationales.

Jake Reiner has married Maria Gilfillan, reaching a milestone he had already written about with painful clarity months before the wedding became public.
Reiner and Gilfillan tied the knot in a small ceremony in early August, PEOPLE confirmed on Aug. 31 after TMZ first reported the marriage. The couple has not publicly disclosed the exact date, location, guest list or other details from the ceremony.
There had been one visible clue before the news broke. During Reiner's Aug. 27 sit-down interview with ABC7 Los Angeles, he appeared to be wearing a gold band on his left ring finger. The interview focused on his life since the deaths of his parents.
The wedding carries a direct connection to something Reiner wrote on April 24 while reflecting on the future he had expected to share with Rob and Michele Reiner. "My parents won't be at my wedding," he wrote, before later naming Maria as the person he believed was right for him and expressing gratitude that she had known and loved both of them.
TMZ, citing sources with direct knowledge, reported that Reiner and Gilfillan married in a small ceremony at the beginning of August. Beyond that, the details remain private.

It has been eight months since beloved Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were killed and their son Nick Reiner was arrested in their deaths.
But for Jake Reiner, the couple's 35-year-old son, the nightmare feels like "eight years at the same time, and it also feels like eight minutes," he told KABC-TV of Los Angeles in his first sit-down interview since the family tragedy.
"Every moment that I wake up, I'm reminded of my reality, and you're living through that every single day," he said.
Jake said he hasn't spoken to his brother. Nor has he attended any of his brother's court hearings, the station reported.
"He's in jail, so, you know, it's like I physically lost my parents and then Nick was arrested. And it's like now, it's just me and Romy," he said, referring to his 28-year-old sister.

Jake and Romy Reiner testified before the Los Angeles grand jury that indicted their brother Nick.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office confirmed Nick's siblings spoke in court as part of their brother's murder case. Just days ago, he was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of their parents Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
Nick is now facing a new alleged special circumstance of lying in wait.
Within a statement unsealed in court last Wednesday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said, "This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.
"The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait," the attorney continued. "We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice."

Nick Reiner has been blocked from accessing his $1.5 million trust fund.
As the 32-year-old prepares for his pretrial hearing, he and his legal team have requested to use the blocked account in order to cover court fees and commissary costs so he can buy "basic necessities" like socks and hygiene products. In the initial petition, he claimed he had not yet received the distribution that was supposed to be allocated when he turned 30.
In the latest development, the previous and incoming fiduciaries set to oversee the trust, Paul Kanin and Jodi Pais Montgomery, have denied his wish, citing California's "slayer statute."
The law prevents individuals from inheriting money or property from a person they "feloniously and intentionally" kill.
In court documents, new trustee Montgomery stated the upcoming trial will decide his access to the trust fund. She said "no distribution should be made until the Court resolves whether" the slayer statute is applicable in Nick's case.

Nick Reiner has reiterated his demand for access to his family's trust fund in a Friday declaration, obtained and reviewed by TheWrap. The document argues that a portion of the fund became "due and payable" to Reiner upon turning 30 years old and that he hadn't been informed by a prior trustee that the sum was owed to him.
Reiner is charged with the murder of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and producer Michele Reiner, who were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood, Calif. residence Dec. 14. Reiner has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In his new filing, Reiner argues that he did not give "consent to any Trustee of my Trust to withhold, defer or retain" his distribution that unlocked at the age of 30, estimated at the value of $558,000.
In a response objecting to Reiner's petition, also obtained and reviewed by TheWrap, the defense argues that Paul Kanin, a former successor trustee, cannot act against the new trustee, Jodie Pais Montgomery, because he no longer controls the trust's ***** ets. The document also argues that Reiner's allegations of misconduct mischaracterize "ordinary, necessary features of trust administration and succession."
"Nick's sense of urgency is real, but it did not arise in a vacuum," argues the objection. "It arises from the deaths of his parents, the very settlors of the Trust at issue, and Nick is presently accused of causing those deaths. While Nick is presumed innocent of that accusation (and nothing in this Response and Objection should be read to suggest otherwise), no one, not this Court, nor the parties, knows how the criminal proceedings against Nick will ultimately resolve. A trustee administering a trust under that uncertainty is bound by the same fiduciary obligations as any trustee."

Nick Reiner has been denied access to a trust fund set up by his parents due to a "slayer statute" in California.
This update in his case comes days after it was revealed he was indicted for the fatal stabbings of Rob and Michele Reiner.
Nick is scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 15. He is being held on no bail.
Nick Reiner has been blocked from accessing a trust fund set up by his parents to pay for court fees.
The incoming fiduciary set to oversee the trust, Jodi Pais Montgomery, who is obligated to Nick, along with his siblings Romy Reiner and Jake Reiner, is opposing the request for Nick to obtain the $1.5 million trust set up by director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner, who he is accused of killing.

Jake Reiner Shares Emotional Tribute to Late Parents Rob Reiner and Michele Singer: 'This Truly Is My Living Nightmare'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rob Reiner's son Nick Reiner is seeking unpaid money from a trust his parents established for him, saying he needs it to help in his defense against charges that he killed them.
A petition filed by the 32-year-old Nick Reiner's civil attorneys in a Los Angeles County court on Monday says that trustees overseeing the funds have denied them to him without legal justification, and he needs and should get them now.
"Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths. But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation," the petition says. "Like anyone accused of a crime, Nick is presumed innocent, and he is entitled to mount his defense with the resources that are lawfully his own."
The director and Hollywood luminary Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were stabbed to death in their home in the upscale Brentwood section of Los Angeles on Dec. 14. Nick Reiner was arrested hours later and has since pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.
Reiner retained high-profile private lawyer Alan Jackson to represent him, but less than a month later Jackson left the case for reasons he said he couldn't share. The new filing reveals that Reiner's siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, had initially agreed to pay for Jackson, but reversed course.

Nick Reiner wants to access a trust fund set up by his late parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, to pay for a lawyer.
Last December, Nick was arrested on suspicion of murder after filmmaker Rob and his photographer wife, Michele, were found dead at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home.
The 32-year-old appeared in court in April, where he pleaded not guilty to two charges of first-degree murder with special circumstances, including the use of a knife.
On Monday, reporters at TMZ obtained a petition filed by Nick's legal team in which he is seeking the "distribution of money" from a trust fund set up by his parents in 1992. He was allegedly supposed to receive a payout from the trust when he turned 30.
Editors at People have reported that the trust is worth around $1.5 million (£1.1 million).
In the court documents, Nick claimed a trustee had denied him the funds, meaning he was unable to hire attorney Alan Jackson to represent him in the case.

Nick Reiner filed a petition seeking money he claims he's owed from a trust established by his late parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, to rehire defense attorney Alan Jackson.
In new documents obtained and viewed by TheWrap, Reiner, who is awaiting trial as the main suspect in the double homicide of his parents, claimed he is owed a mandatory payout, given the trust was supposed to be given to him on his 30th birthday. Yet, Reiner alleged the trustee did not (and still has not) released the funds.
"The terms of Nick's Trust are not complicated, and they are not subject to reasonable dispute," the document stated. "Nick's parents left unambiguous instructions about when the funds in the Trust were to be released to him. One-half of the Trust was required to be distributed to Nick outright when he turned 30. They further instructed that when he turned 35, he would receive the rest of the funds in his Trust. These distributions are mandatory and unconditional."
In the 136-page filing, Reiner explained that he intended to use the money for his legal fees, noting he had "no other means" to do so. In fact, the petition claimed Jackson departed Reiner's case after "funding did not materialize."
"Nick was initially represented by Alan Jackson – one of the country's most sought-after criminal defense attorneys – who was retained by Nick's family the day after his arrest to defend him through trial," the document summarized. "On January 7, 2026, Nick learned that Jackson and his firm were forced to withdraw because the anticipated funding did not materialize, and the Public Defender was appointed to take over Nick's defense."
