With Meredith departing the class of 2027, that led to a slight shift in the Rivals Industry Ranking. Long Beach Poly (Calif.) five-star Donte Wright is now the nation's No. 1 CB in the cycle.
The Miami commit has continued to see his stock rise ahead of a big senior campaign this fall. Last week, he was named the No. 4 overall prospect and top-ranked CB in the new Rivals300. He's now the No. 9 recruit in the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies.
Wright is also the industry ranking's No. 1 player in the state of California. The 6-foot-0.5, 175-pounder has long looked like one of the best athletes in all of high school football.

SEC Media Days have come and gone, and now we have the official preseason media predictions for the league.
The Georgia Bulldogs were once again picked to win the SEC, receiving 88 first-place votes. The next highest first-place vote receiver was, by a wide margin, the Texas Longhorns with 57 votes.
No other team received double-digit votes, though Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and even Kentucky received at least one first-place vote.

Five-star 2027 cornerback recruit John Meredith is re-classifying and enrolling early at the University of Texas. UT coach Steve Sarkisian announced the 6-foot-2, 190-pound DB will become a 2026 signee and will play this fall when he's ready.
At this end of his opening statement, Sarkisian added, "One addition for us, John Meredith will be an early enrollee for us. He's reclassified. He'll be with the team this fall. He's a great player for us at DB that we couldn't be more excited to have on board this us."
Meredith was the biggest June commitment across college football. The move mainly stems from Meredith being ruled ineligible by the University Interscholastic League after transferring to North Crowley from Euless Trinity. Due to the UIL ruling, Meredith had only a few options. He could have transferred out of state to play football or sit out a year.
Meredith is the highest ranked defensive back commitment in Texas football recruiting history. Which is saying something considering three former Longhorns have won the Thorpe Award as the country's best DB.
When will he be ready? Sark says he will be coached and developed and when he's read to play, he will.

We are just 44 days from Texas taking the field against Texas State and it's SEC media days week! Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns will take centerstage in Tampa today, but Arch Manning is already a topic of discussion. Jordan Rodgers, former Vanderbilt QB and ESPN **** yst, shared his thoughts about Manning heading into the season. While some have stamped Manning as a "sure thing," Rodgers is not as convinced.
Now, Rodger's full comments are much more nuanced than just doubting Arch Manning. He acknowledges Arch's ability to improve and how he fully expects him to become a first round pick next spring. Regardless, many Longhorn fans took exception with the comments, calling it unfair. Once watching the full comments, I'm not sure Rodgers is incorrect about Manning heading into the season.
The one thing we have to clarify to start the conversation: the word "generational" is often overused in sports, especially college football. Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson are examples of generational athleticism. Arch Manning is not as athletic as those guys. Patrick Mahomes and Caleb Williams have generational arm talent. Arch Manning's doesn't match those guys. That's not to say Manning doesn't have great athleticism and great arm talent, but it's not "generational".
Rodger's biggest point for Manning was he needs to be more efficient if he wants to be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. I'm not sure I share that sentiment. However, that is based on what I believe Manning will be, not what he has been. That's the difference Rodgers is seemingly trying to highlight. That being said, there is no argument against the idea that Manning has to be more efficient.
Arch Manning finished the season on a tear. From the Mississippi State game forward, he totalled 19 TDs, 2 INTs and led Texas to a 5-1 record. However, during that time he also had just one game where he completed more than 63% of his passes. On the season, he completed just 61.4% of his passes, ranking 81st in the country. In the past three seasons, the national championship QB has finished in the top 10 in completion percentage in the country. It's not a requirement, but he has to get closer to 66% this season for the Texas offense to find their rhythm.

ESPN's "First Take" tossed this soon-to-be season-long narrative around at SEC Media Days on Thursday with Paul Finebaum and Stephen A. Smith. A hyped-up Texas team in July is nothing new. The Longhorns have a top-five ranking, a roster full of NFL Draft-ready talent and Arch Manning is plastered across the Sporting News College Football 2026 Preview magazine.
So naturally, this question became whether it's a national championship-or-bust year for Manning in 2026.
"Absolutely, because this is one of those heralded players in college football history," Finebaum said. "We know what happened last year, but what is going to happen this year? If he finishes his career with any sort of **** le or any sort of playoff, there is no other way to characterize it. You hate to do it — because of all of the good things about him and his family, but that's just the reality of the situation."

A major Texas Longhorns recruit is suiting up to play for them a year early. Five-star cornerback John Meredith is reclassifying from 2027 to 2026, head coach Steve Sarkisian said at SEC Media Days. That means he will be playing for next season's Longhorns.
"I'm more than ready. Looking forward to getting to campus and am ready to compete," Meredith said to Hayes Fawcett of On3. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound corner is ranked as the No. 2 corner and No. 12 prospect in the nation.
Part of this comes from his high school status. He tried transferring from Euless Trinity to North Crowley, but the District 11-6A executive committee ruled him ineligible to play his senior season. The ruling allows him to play a season early.
The Longhorns are expected to start a relatively young secondary after corner Jahdae Barron was drafted in the first round. Sophomores Graceson Littleton and Kade Phillips are expected to take big roles in the secondary, and Brad Spencer and Jelani McDonald are the only seniors in the secondary.
It makes all the sense for Meredith, who could have NFL potential, and he gets to train with a Texas staff that just developed Barron. "He provides great length, great speed, tremendous man-to-man ability," Sarkisian said at SEC Media Days. "Very confident, very aggressive. All the attributes you want in a defensive back… It's not a secret why he was a top two or three player in the country in the 2027 class. We'll see how far we can take him."

TAMPA, Fla - This week, former Texas Longhorns offensive lineman Cole Hutson moved closer to a return to the field.
According to multiple reports, Hutson has been granted a temporary restraining order in his battle with the NCAA. The order would allow Hutson to resume football activities in preparation for the 2026 season.
Attempts Thursday by the American-Statesman to reach Hutson's attorney, David Ovard, were not successful. Ovard, though, did tell 247Sports that "the court is granting the temporary restraining order and setting the injunction for a hearing, and we are working on this date."

At the heart of this legal saga is the NCAA's eligibility model that was reworked earlier this summer. The NCAA now permits five years of eligibility for all of its athletes, but a participant's eligibility clock now begins no later than the academic year following their 19th birthday. This overrode the previous rule of college athletics, which allowed four years of eligibility but did not penalize redshirts, delayed entries and other situations that may warrant a waiver.

Texas coach Sean Miller offered a laundry list of reasons for why he's thrilled the Longhorns will face the Baylor Bears next season in a neutral site contest at the Frost Bank Center.
The "San Antonio Hoops Showdown" is set for Nov. 15, the Spurs announced Tuesday. Tickets for the 264th all-time meeting between the programs will go on sale at noon on Oct. 1 at FrostBankCenter.com and Ticketmaster.com. A third Carolina Panthers player has hit the shelf on Tuesday.
Cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau has been placed on the reserve/non-football injury list. The 22-year-old defender and the rest of the team's rookie class reported back to Charlotte this morning, right before the start of training camp.
Guilbeau signed with the Panthers this past spring as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Texas. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder played four seasons for the Longhorns—amassing 124 combined tackles (8.0 for a loss), an interception, 10 passes defensed and a sack.
Earlier in the afternoon, Carolina placed a pair of veteran starters—right tackle Taylor Moton and cornerback Jaycee Horn—on the NFI list. Horn is expected to return soon after sustaining a cut on his foot while Moton, who was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung in late June, seems likely to miss some time into the regular season.

The U.S. completed the tournament with a 5-0 record with wins over Venezuela, Mexico and Canada during pool play before sweeping Mexico in the semifinals and Canada in the championship match. The Americans dropped just one set at the tournament.
The team included two rising Longhorns sophomores in middle blocker Harvey and outside hitter Vander Wal as well as two 2026 recruits in outside hitter Anderson and setter Harris. The 6-foot-3 Anderson, out of Dripping Springs, registered nine points in the gold medal match with four kills, three aces and two blocks. She started four of Team USA's five matches, highlighted by a team-high 17 points in a four-set pool-play victory over Canada on 13 kills and four aces before recording nine points in both the semifinal victory over Mexico as well as the championship match.

Texas A&M's No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class is all but wrapped up after landing four-star linebacker Mikahi Allen on Saturday afternoon, and while five-star running back Landon Williams-Callis has yet to announce his commitment, the Texas Longhorns currently lead for the blue-chip back, while the Aggies will likely gear their focus to flipping four-star running back and Texas Tech commit SaRod Baker.
While we haven't moved on to the 2028 recruiting class just yet, third-year coach Mike Elko and his staff have made significant progress with several priority prospects in the cycle, including NFL legacy and four-star wide receiver Jayden Addai, son of former Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai. On the defensive side, rising four-star Edge George Parkinson IV recently placed Texas A&M on his initial top-6 list.
Elko and his staff will battle Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State, LSU, and Tennessee for the second-ranked player in Pennsylvania, whose 6'4", 235-pound frame provides whichever coaching staff he chooses a body type that will aid in his development as a future starting pass rusher. While Parkinson has primarily played at tight end, his future is on defense.
Texas A&M's lone 2028 commit is four-star Edge Chance Archangel, who chose the Aggies over LSU and several other blue-blood programs back in early June. It's early, but being one of six finalists to land George Parkinson IV is a good sign ahead of the 2026 season, where a long list of 2028 prospects are poised to make in-season visits.

After one year with the Texas Longhorns, Aiden Robbins is heading to the Big Apple. The New York Mets selected the Longhorns outfielder in the third round of the MLB Draft on Saturday night. He was one of the best players in the nation during the 2026 campaign and will soon become one of the Mets' top prospects.
During his junior campaign, Robbins posted a .333 batting average in 60 games. He set career highs in home runs with 24, RBI with 64, and runs with 68. After spending the first two years of his college career with Seton Hall, Robbins made a name for himself in the SEC.
In Robbins, the Mets are getting a player who finished his college career with a .355 batting average in 156 games with Seton Hall and Texas. His excellence did not stop there, as Robbins also hit .328 in the Cape Cod League. Regardless of the level, Robbins has been a hit machine and shown no signs of slowing down.
While Saturday was a day Robbins will never forget, some of his teammates also heard their names called. Carson Tinney was drafted in the second round by the Minnesota Twins, and Ruger Riojas was taken by the Phillies eight picks after Robbins. That trio has a bright future ahead if they can build on their success in Austin.
Heading into the draft, Robbins was projected to be picked No.28 overall by Baseball America. The reason he went later than scouts expected was due to concerns about how his swing would fare against higher velocity and spin rates. If Robbins can avoid striking out in bunches, then he will quickly rise through the Mets system.

The Oklahoma Sooners appear to have many of the ingredients needed to contend for a national championship. After going 10-3 and returning to the College Football Playoff last season, expectations are rising in Norman. Oklahoma also returns much of its core, tying for No. 12 nationally in returning production.
Those factors typically give teams a legitimate opportunity to compete for a national ***** le. The biggest obstacle is Oklahoma's schedule, which ranks as the second-toughest in college football, trailing only the Arkansas Razorbacks. Some of the key games include road games against the Michigan Wolverines and the Georgia Bulldogs, a neutral-site game against the Texas Longhorns, and home games against the Ole Miss Rebels and the Texas A&M Aggies.
Those are all teams that have College Football Playoff aspirations, and three of them made the field last season. So, the question now is what chances does Oklahoma have at winning its eighth national championship? ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI), a measure of a team's strength meant to be the best predictor of its performance going forward for the rest of the season, gives the Sooners a 2% chance to win it all.

That ranks Oklahoma No. 12 in college football and No. 6 in the SEC, behind Texas, Georgia, the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, and Texas A&M. Three of which the Sooners play. Despite Oklahoma's returning production and momentum from last season, ESPN's projection suggests the Sooners remain a tier below the sport's top championship favorites entering 2026.

Marcus Spears Jr.'s commitment to Texas basketball this week was enough to ***** p the Longhorns' current recruiting class to No. 6 nationally, according to the latest Rivals Industry Ranking. As noted by On3, "Spears Jr. is ranked as Rivals' No. 10 overall prospect, No. 2 power forward, and No. 1 player in Texas in the 2026 class. The Rivals Industry Ranking labels Spears Jr. as the No. 7 overall prospect, the No. 2 power forward, and the No. 1 player in Texas." Spears Jr. is currently rated as a unanimous five-star recruit across all three recruiting services.
