MADISON, Wis. (AP) — First responders searched damaged homes and buildings on Tuesday for possible victims of a powerful tornado that carved a path of destruction through several northeastern Wisconsin communities.
The twister touched down in the Fox Cities region, which includes Appleton, Menasha and Neenah, at around 1 p.m. Monday and remained on the ground for more than 20 minutes as it cut a roughly 12-mile path of destruction through an area, the National Weather Service reported. It was nearly a mile (1.6 kilometers) across at its widest, and it destroyed homes and businesses, flipped cars and knocked down rows of power lines in the region, which is roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Milwaukee.
The timing — it blew in when most people were awake and after warnings had been issued — could be why there have been no reported deaths, authorities said.
"I think what helped us was it was during the week," Menasha Police Chief Matt Albrecht said at a news conference Tuesday. "Everybody was at work. It was the middle of the day. Most people were not at home and at their place of employment."
Authorities said a number of people were injured and treated at hospitals, but they didn't know exactly how many or how seriously.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Part of a major interstate highway in Oregon was closed Monday due to a wildfire that forced a small town to evacuate, one of dozens of blazes burning across the state.
The Fox Fire forced the closure of Interstate 84 for some 70 miles (113 kilometers) between Baker City and Ontario near the Idaho state line before reopening later in the day, the Oregon Department of Transportation said. I-84 is a key thoroughfare, running from Portland in the west through the Columbia River Gorge and into eastern Oregon before crossing the Snake River eastward through Boise.
The transportation department said the wildfire remains active in the area and that intermittent closures were still possible.
Challenging wildfires have burned across the Western U.S. this summer, following months of dry weather, a record lack of snow in some areas, hot spells and erratic winds. Federal authorities announced Saturday that a fourth firefighter died of his injuries after he and several colleagues were overcome last month by a fast-moving wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border.
The Fox Fire was burning near the Oregon-Idaho state line about 12 miles (19 kilometers) northeast of the small town of Huntington, which was under a Level 3 "Go Now" evacuation order, meaning its roughly 500 residents have been told to leave immediately.

Fans from Northeast Ohio had mixed reactions to the news that Akron native LeBron James isn't heading back home.
"I regret that he ain't coming home to Cleveland, but this will always be his hometown," said Fred Slack of Akron.

Downtown Akron is bustling with firefighter athletes from all over the country for the Northeast Regional Firefighter Challenge Classic.
The morning of July 23, the challenge began for individual participants on South Main Street. When it was their turn, competitors donned their firefighter gear and stood at the base of a 41-foot stair tower. When the whistle blew, they were off.
The Firefighter Challenge, which ESPN coined "the toughest two minutes in sports," is a five-stage course that reflects similar training elements to the ones fire departments and fire colleges use "to prepare their personnel to perform their job at the highest level," according to the website.
The goal is to complete the stages in the fastest time, but it's about much more than that for many of the people competing this year.
"It's a good way to show how firefighters train and what we're capable of doing when people need us," said Hunter Brancifort from the Akron Fire Department.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a bastion of American higher education, with roughly 100 colleges dotted across 7,800 square miles of landmass. And at a number of those schools, there are proud programs with a lengthy history of producing accomplished athletes.
Boston College has produced a Heisman Trophy winner, and future NFL and NHL stars. UMass and Holy Cross have both enjoyed runs as national powerhouses in men's basketball. DONNAS, Italy (AP) — The iridescent green beetles native to ******* an have become a growing menace in Italy, swarming through orchards and vineyards and leaving behind devastating lattice patterns in leaves that weaken the plants and reduce production.
The Popillia ******* onica, or ******* anese beetle, is a familiar pest in the United States, where it arrived more than a century ago.
But it is a relative newcomer to the European continent, first detected near Milan's Malpensa airport in 2014. In Italy, it has already swarmed through the northeastern regions of Lombardy, Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta, where it appeared last year in terraced vineyards above the town of Donnas.
"We're seeing the popillia steadily advance from terrace to terrace across our historic vineyards," said Luciano Zoppo Ronzero, a winemaker who produces Nebbiolo from the terraced vines. "We're now about the 10th terrace and can already see the popillia attacks. This means they're consuming and gradually moving up the mountain."
With no natural predators and an appetite covering over 300 plants and trees, the ******* anese beetle has made the European Union's list of priority pests, meaning that efforts must be made to contain and eradicate outbreaks.

The number of confirmed Ebola cases across the country rose to 1,926, including 702 deaths, official data showed late on Sunday. Four cases were recorded in Tshopo, including two deaths, with one death confirmed in Haut-Uele, as of Saturday.

The Walker Cup is two months away, and the USGA announced Wednesday the first four selections for the United States squad.
Preston Stout, Tyler Watts, Ethan Fang and Miles Russell will represent the stars and stripes Sept. 5-6 at Lahinch in Ireland, site of the 51st Walker Cup — a biennial match between the top amateurs from the United States and those from Great Britain and Ireland.
Stout, Watts and Fang earned automatic spots on the U.S. side thanks to being the highest-ranked Americans in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, while Russell was selected by the Walker Cup committee.
Stout, a rising senior at Oklahoma State, recently moved to No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He won the individual ******* le at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship in June and was on the Walker Cup team last year at Cypress Point. While countries around the world are peacefully coming together and celebrating the global sport of soccer with the World Cup, one Palestinian professional soccer player who dreamed of one day playing in the World Cup lost his life before the birth of his first child while trying to care for his family.
According to multiple outlets, 32-year-old Palestinian professional goalkeeper Saleem al-Ashqar was killed by Israeli fire while trying to secure a cooking gas cylinder for his family in southern Gaza, leaving behind his wife, who was pregnant with their first child.
Al Jazeera reports that al-Ashqar set out on a motorcycle to search for a cooking gas cylinder, but he was shot and killed by Israeli forces in the town of al-Qarara, northeast of Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The Palestine Football ****** ociation shared that al-Ashqar was struck in the abdomen and rushed to the hospital, where he died of his injuries hours later.
"He went out like any other young man, just trying to provide a gas cylinder for his wife and family, but the treacherous bullets of the occupation struck him," his uncle, Captain Farid al-Ashqar, a member of the PFA referees committee who had helped raise Saleem, told Al Jazeera.
Al-Ashqar spent his professional career playing for three clubs in the Gaza Strip, representing Al-Aqsa Sports Club and Al-Masdar Sports Club previously before last playing for Khadamat Khan Younis.

Two-time major golf champion John Daly arrived in Akron and paid a visit to the Diamond Grill ahead of his Ambassador Golf Award ceremony at House Three Thirty.

This week is the last Kaulig Companies Championship Tournament at Firestone Country Club. Several golfers are in town for the PGA Tour Champions event.
Daly is being recognized as the 2026 recipient of the Ambassador of Golf Award presented by Northern Ohio Golf Charities & Foundation July 9.
"I've always loved this game and what it’s given me,” Daly said about the award earlier this week. “Golf has taken me places I never imagined and introduced me to incredible people along the way. Justin Shifflett thought his all star team's season was over after a third-place finish in the state tournament. Then, the following Monday, June 29, the coach got a phone call telling him that the second-place team couldn't attend the regional tournament in Florida due to lack of participants. Officials asked Shifflett if his team would like to be the second representative from Virginia.
Shifflett had to make some quick phone calls to all of the families to see if they could go. All 12 said they could.
"It was a whirlwind," Shifflett said. "I'm still trying to figure it out. It was wild, but it's been an incredible experience."
The Northeast Augusta Rookie League Machine Pitch team will begin play in the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Southeast Region in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Wednesday, July 8. The NEA teams will play Okeeheelee, Florida, at 2 p.m. to open pool play in the eight-team tournament. Pool play runs through Friday, July 10. The top four teams advance to a single-elimination tournament beginning Saturday, July 11.
"They've battled through adversity and anything you can imagine," Shifflett said. "Being the underdogs, playing on fields they've never played on, rain delays, sitting in hot sun. They never gave up. They battled through every single game. It's a phenomenal group of kids."

Jeremy Francou had Connecticut Rush's number putting on a first-half show tallying a hat trick in 37 minutes during Vermont Green FC's regular season home finale.
That performance helped the Green earn a 6-2 win over Connecticut Rush and clinch its second consecutive Northeast Division trophy. Francou scored the first five Vermont goals and was a one-man wrecker that no one could stop.
What made the game even more special to Francou was that his father and friends came all the way from France providing extra support.
"First time in my career," Francou said on his five-goal performance. "Really nice feeling to help the team and grateful to be here."
The senior finished off the hat trick with his best goal of the night. Francou won a tight battle for the ball and burst out the speed. He flew by two other defenders with his sight on the goal. Francou let go of his shot on the edge of the box and sent it past the goalie.

Adding another personal dimension to his first Derby, Rice will have his father, Dan, pitching to him at Citizens Bank Park.
In his personal Instagram post on Tuesday, Rice included a vide of “our first practice round,’’ with a very young Ben Rice, wearing a Yankees jersey, blasting pitches thrown underhand by his dad.
Both father and son are Ivy Leaguers; Dan Brown pitched at Brown University. During one of the early Rice scouting sessions attended Yankees' Northeast area scout Matt Hyde, Dan Brown pitched to his son.

Saturday’s round of 16 match is the first that will be played outdoors in that weather, although Friday’s matches in Miami and Kansas City were also notably hot, each around 87 degrees at kickoff.
Temperatures are supposed to slightly drop before Sunday’s match between Brazil and Norway in New Jersey.
The round of 16 match will have some of the harshest weather conditions of the tournament. Other matches have been impacted by rain and lightning delays, including one in Philadelphia during France’s group stage win over Iraq.
FIFA has not indicated moving the match any later in the evening to avoid the high temperatures. Such a decision wouldn’t have collided with any other matches, as the only other Round of 16 game on Saturday was Canada–Morocco, which kicked off earlier in the afternoon in Houston.

The Oklahoma Sooners have made an addition to their recruiting and scouting teams, with a new hire to start July. OU has hired Manaia Brown as a scouting coordinator in their recruiting department.
Brown was most recently the ****** istant director of recruiting at Fresno State. The former Nebraska and BYU defensive tackle also spent a year as the defensive line coach at Northeastern State following a stint at Garden City Community College, the alma mater of head coach Brent Venables. He also has over ten years of coordinator experience. As a player, he was a two-time All-Mountain West selection, and even signed a free-agent contract with Washington in the NFL.
His hiring is far from the only support staff move the Sooners have made this offseason, and he'll help to replace the loss of scouting coordinator T.J. Lynn, who left for a job as a graduate ****** istant at UCLA coaching cornerbacks.

An 11-year-old boy crashed a pickup truck into a group of monks on a pilgrimage walk in northeastern Thailand on Thursday, killing nine and injuring 13 others, officials said.
A total of 35 monks from Mukdahan province, about 600 kilometers northeast of the capital Bangkok, were on the pilgrimage. Five monks were killed at the site, while three others died at a hospital, according to Mukdahan Governor Worrayan Boonnarat. The office later announced the death of a ninth monk.
Thirteen were hospitalized with three in critical condition, according to the provincial administration.
The group started the 260-kilometer walk to Ubon Ratchathani province about 30 minutes before the crash.
