The Jacksonville Jaguars are hosting a month-long celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month throughout September, launching community outreach programs and student-athlete recognition under the banner "Somos DUUUVAL."
The initiative addresses the growth of the Hispanic and Latino community in Northeast Florida through youth sports, literacy outreach, and leadership initiatives.
Adriel Rocha, the Jaguars vice president of community impact and youth development, emphasized the initiative's focus on community service and culture. "Hispanic Heritage Month is a reminder of the rich culture, contributions and leadership of the Hispanic community and through Somos DUUUVAL, the Jaguars strive to celebrate and strengthen that spirit in Jacksonville," Rocha said. "Through a month-long series of initiatives for the Hispanic community, we are harnessing the power of service to strengthen connections and make a lasting difference in this community."
As part of the initiative, Jaguars PREP, the foundation's youth programming branch, partnered with Ticketmaster and Farah & Farah to host two youth football camps focused on athletics and leadership skills.
Nearly 350 students in third through fifth grades at BridgePrep Academy and Englewood Elementary School are participating.

Freshman wide receiver Devin Fitzgerald made his debut donning the blue and gold during Notre Dame's Shamrock Series game against Wisconsin on Sunday.
Fitzgerald – who was selected to the 2026 Hispanic College Football Player of the Year watchlist – didn't play, but his dad Larry Fitzgerald still showed support for him.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver and Arizona Cardinals great posted on social media that it was a "proud dad moment" to see Devin suited up for the Irish at a sold-out Lambeau Field.
"What a day!," Larry Fitzgerald added.
Devin Fitzgerald competed at Brophy College Prep (Ariz.) for three years in his prep career. He compiled career totals in catches (149), receiving yards (2,125) and touchdowns (26). Fitzgerald's career catches are a Brophy school record, and the career yards and TDs are the second-most in program history.

The Colorado Buffaloes' linebacker core was completely revamped this offseason with Deion Sanders' staff adding three starting-caliber linebackers from the transfer portal. All three have had impressive fall camps, with two making the Butkus Award watch list and the other, Tyler Martinez, recently named to the Hispanic College Football Player of the Year watch list.
Martinez, a New Mexico State transfer, missed most of the 2025 season with an injury, but in the four games he played, he totaled 27 total tackles, four pass breakups, one tackle for loss, one interception and a forced fumble. He showed impressive playmaking ability in limited action, and Colorado hopes he can find that form in 2026.
The award was established only in 2025, with the founding of the Hispanic Football Hall of Fame. The inaugural recipient was Indiana's Fernando Mendoza.
Other players to make the preseason watch list include Mendoza's brother Alberto, who the Buffaloes are likely to face as Georgia Tech's presumptive starting quarterback. Penn State linebacker Tony Rojas and Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. are other stars on the list.
"Hispanic athletes are driving the future of college football, and this watchlist ensures their extraordinary achievements get the national spotlight they've earned," said Ron Rivera, HFHOF founding member and former NFL coach, via a press release. The Hispanic Football Hall of Fame (HFHOF) recently announced its watchlist for the 2026 Hispanic College Football Player of the Year Award, and a Notre Dame freshman is one of 20 players on the list.

The Miami Marlins and Telemundo have announced a local deal that will see the Marlins broadcast games over-the-air in Spanish for the first time.
The agreement will see two Marlins games air in Spanish on WSCV (Channel 51) in Miami: Sunday, Aug. 9, vs. the Los Angeles Angels at 1:40 p.m. ET and the regular-season finale on Sunday, Sept. 27, vs. the Atlanta Braves at 3:10 p.m. ET.
Unlike most Spanish-language broadcasts, the Marlins games on Telemundo will feature a dedicated broadcast team. Jose Francisco Rivera will handle play-by-play, with Daniel Álvarez-Montes providing color commentary.
"Baseball is deeply rooted in the Spanish-speaking community, and that is especially true here in South Florida," said Caroline O'Connor, Miami Marlins President of Business. "Our partnership with Telemundo 51 Miami allows us to connect with Spanish-speaking fans in a more meaningful way through Spanish-language broadcasts while expanding access to Marlins baseball across the region."
Major League Baseball has a large Hispanic following, with the sport being popular in countries like Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Panama, all of which have large diasporas in the United States. Miami has an especially large Hispanic community.

FIRST ON FOX: A Republican firebrand is pushing legislation to abolish some of the most influential Democratic groups in Congress.
Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution Thursday barring the formation of House caucuses organized around race, ethnicity or national origin.
If adopted, the measure would effectively force the dissolution of Democrat-aligned groups, including the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
The proposal could also affect GOP-affiliated organizations, including the Black Republican Congressional Staff ***** ociation, the GOP Latino Staff ***** ociation and the Republican Asian American Staff ***** ociation.

The Trump administration has accused UC San Diego's medical school of illegally discriminating against White and Asian applicants in favor of admitting less qualified Black and Hispanic students, putting nearly $1 billion in federal funding at risk.
The findings stem from a months-long Justice Department Civil Rights Division investigation launched in March and come as the Trump administration intensifies its effort to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
According to a letter sent to the school by **** istant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, the admissions committee used applicants' responses to a "hardship" essay question to determine their racial and ethnic backgrounds, using the essays as a proxy for race in deciding who advanced in the admissions process. The investigation found that from 2019 to 2025, Black applicants to UC San Diego Med were admitted at more than twice the rate of White applicants, even though White applicants, on average, had higher MCAT scores and GPAs.
"Rather than rely on MCAT scores or GPA, San Diego Med's shadow application process unlawfully judged applicants for admission based on their race," Dhillon said in a statement. "San Diego Med's blatant efforts to prioritize race are illegal, and we will end these practices."

Benny Melendez voted for President Donald Trump in 2024. But since Trump returned to the White House, it has been increasingly difficult for Melendez to run his small construction company in south Texas. He says immigration officers have detained workers at his job sites and while driving his company trucks. Since the beginning of 2025, more than 10 of those workers have been deported.
The chaos of the past year-and-a-half has convinced Melendez to abandon his support for Trump and Republicans, and instead back the Democrat in this year's U.S. Senate election, state Rep. James Talarico.
"How can we continue voting for someone that is targeting our community?" Melendez said. "There's no way possible we're going to support that. No way."
Melendez is not alone. One in five Hispanic business owners in Texas say they've had an employee deported in the past year, according to a new survey commissioned by the U.S. Hispanic Business Council and shared first with POLITICO. Seven in ten said their businesses had been impacted by Trump's tariffs. Among those surveyed, Talarico holds a seven-point lead over Attorney General Ken Paxton, the GOP nominee, even though a plurality of the over 1,000 respondents self-identify as Republican. Almost one quarter who supported Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary now say they'll back Talarico, while over half say they'll back Paxton.
The survey is the clearest sign yet of Paxton's vulnerability among Texas' robust Hispanic business community amidst broader signs that Hispanic voters around the country are swinging hard against him, thanks to the Trump administration's immigration crackdown and the shaky economy. The survey was conducted from June 2 to 15 and included 1,012 Texas-based USHBC members. Respondents included business owners in construction, food services, retail, manufacturing and other industries.

MIAMI (AP) — Ashleigh Hallam teaches English as a second language at her local library in Indiana. Soccer is now teaching her Spanish as a second language.
For her, this World Cup couldn't make more sense.
Hallam is among a sizable number of English-speaking people in the U.S. who are doing something these days that might be considered a bit surprising: They're watching broadcasts of World Cup matches in Spanish on Telemundo, even though they have little idea — or in some cases, no idea — what the announcers are saying.
“I can’t really understand everything they’re saying on Telemundo because they’re speaking in Spanish,” Hallam said. “But you understand what’s going on.”
The math is simple. Census figures show that about 20% of the U.S. is Hispanic, yet Telemundo points to Nielsen ratings to show that roughly half the World Cup viewers in the U.S. have watched at least some portion of some matches in Spanish. Every match of the tournament has been available for U.S. viewers in English on Fox or FS1, on Telemundo or Universo in Spanish, and there are streaming options such as Fox One or Peacock.

For the first time since 1994, the FIFA World Cup returned to North America, with most of the games being played in 11 of the United States’ biggest stadiums, in addition to five venues in Mexico and Canada. Appreciation for the United States Men’s National Team, which got out of the group stage before falling to Belgium, was widespread – but hardly universal.
According to a poll done by Freebets.com, a sports wagering platform based in London, nearly one-third of Americans are rooting for foreign teams over the United States. Various factors might explain this trend, which was documented even before President Trump weighed in on a controversial red card against a U.S. striker, ranging from the high number of recent immigrants in the United States to the fact that America has never won the World Cup.
Yet the most sobering fact is that on America’s 250th birthday young Americans don’t feel the tug of the red, white, and blue on their heartstrings. About half of those under 30, mostly Gen Z, have been rooting for a foreign team.
The survey collected responses from 1,800 Americans who follow World Cup soccer, 66% of whom are men. At 49%, Gen Z respondents were more likely than other generations to support another country’s team, followed by millennials (42%), and Gen X (31%). Even among flag-waving baby boomers, 26% say they prefer another team.
There are various factors leading to these preferences, although heritage has the most influence. Across 16 states, Mexico’s team claimed the favorite spot, most predominantly in California, Texas, Florida, and New York. Among Hispanic respondents, 43% favored Mexico, indicating a connection rooted in ancestry.

Roberto is the founder of La Liga (Spanish for the league) in Gwinnett County, one of metro Atlanta’s largest soccer leagues.
He started it to help bring Gwinnett’s Hispanic community together. Nearly 30 years later, it’s bringing every community together.
“We’ve seen little kids since they were 5 years old, and now they’re teenagers,” league marketing director Yasel Vargas said.

The superintendent of Los Angeles public schools has resigned four months after he was put on paid leave during a federal investigation, saying he wants students to learn "without distraction."
Alberto Carvalho's resignation letter dated Sunday made no direct mention of the Feb. 25 search of his home and the LA Unified School District's headquarters. Two days after the FBI served the search warrants, the district's Board of Education voted unanimously to place Carvalho on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Authorities have not provided details of the nature of the investigation involving the district, which serves more than 500,000 students. The investigation appears to relate to a contract the school district had with an education technology company whose leader was later indicted for fraud. The company, AllHere, had a contract with the district to create an AI chatbot.
Before becoming the Los Angeles superintendent in 2022, Carvalho had spent his entire education career in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, where he drew national praise for improving graduation rates and academic achievement among Black and Hispanic students. While advocating for Miami's immigrant students, he spoke openly about his own struggles as a young recent arrival from Portugal working in restaurants and construction while homeless at times.
Authorities have not accused Carvalho of any crimes. He denied any wrongdoing earlier this year and had asked to be reinstated as head of the nation's second-largest district. On Sunday he resigned via a letter addressed to "students, families, teachers, staff, and community." He cited what he called "historic progress" made during his tenure.

Local ratings are in for the United States men’s national soccer team’s World Cup match against Paraguay, and the cities most interested in the game may not be the ones you expect.
According to Michael Mulvihill, the President of Insights and ***** ytics at Fox Corporation, Kansas City had the highest English-language ratings for United States-Paraguay.
Kansas City recorded a 9.2 rating and a 29 share. A rating is the percentage of total households in a market that tuned into the game, while share is the percentage of households watching TV that were watching the game. So 9.2% of Kansas City households watched United States-Paraguay, and 29% of households watching TV in Kansas City were tuned into the match.
The story is slightly different when Spanish viewership is included. Combined English- and Spanish-language ratings show Los Angeles topping all markets with a 13.4 rating and a 42 share. For comparison, throughout the entire 2025 World Series (Los Angeles Dodgers-Toronto Blue Jays), Los Angeles averaged a 17.6 rating and a 53 share.
The combined English + Spanish ratings generally highlight cities with large Hispanic populations (Los Angeles, Miami, and Houston are the top three). But the English-language ratings are far more interesting. Boston was No. 2 with an 8.6 rating, while San Diego, Dallas, and St. Louis tied at 7.3.
