Anthony Edwards stands out as the face of the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise. They want to keep him around for the long term, seeing ***** yst Brian Windhorst provide insight into the situation.
Edwards has been playing in the NBA since 2020, balling out six years into his career for the Timberwolves. He ranks first as the highest-paid player on the Minnesota squad, elevating them into serious playoff contention.
Windhorst recently appeared for an episode of the Hoop Collective this weekend. Edwards is under contract until the end of the 2028-29 campaign, but he will be eligible for a major contract extension that will make him one of the highest-paid players in the entire league. Windhorst explained that Edwards could feel differently about his team's future by next summer.
"He's excited about the team now. When he needs to be excited is a year from now when he signs the extension," Windhorst said at the 11-minute mark. "And listen, if the extension was now, maybe he would sign it. Maybe he would be excited about this enough to sign it, and maybe he thinks LaMelo is going to be a perfect fit; and maybe he will be a perfect fit. I'm not trying to be a jerk. I'm just trying to be honest. The time where Ant has to feel really good about the Wolves is a year from now."

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic has been among the best players in the NBA throughout the 2020s, but the MVP award has continued to elude him. Doncic finished fourth in MVP voting last season despite winning the scoring ***** le, but ESPN's Tim MacMahon believes he could finally win in 2027.
MacMahon shared the pathway for Doncic to take home the Michael Jordan Trophy on the latest episode of The Hoop Collective podcast.
"I think it's pretty well set up for Luka to potentially win his first," MacMahon said.
Co-host Brian Windhorst pointed out it helps to have a narrative, and Doncic has one. Just like how Kevin Durant leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder helped Russell Westbrook's case in 2017, LeBron James departing for the Philadelphia 76ers this summer helps his.
"And a narrative where the expectations for the Lakers are as low as they've been since LeBron arrived," MacMahon added.

While discussing Klay Thompson's move to the Miami Heat, one ESPN ******* yst had some choice words for Enes Kanter.

These public antics from Kanter have not been received well by many in the NBA world, as one ESPN ******* yst used a recent signing to take shots at the former Boston Celtics star.

On August 29, Stephen Curry is eligible to sign a two-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors for about $136.7 million. The Warriors are prepared to give Curry what he wants, and he hasn't made any indications that he wants to leave. However, ESPN's Brian Windhorst encourages the superstar to stall signing an extension this summer.
Signing Curry to a contract extension this summer could solidify the star player's legacy with Golden State. Both sides are interested in continuing their partnership, and Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. expressed interest in keeping the four-time champion.
Ahead of his upcoming contract eligibility, Windhorst said it would be the best option for the team if Curry holds out on signing a new deal.

"By next week you'll start to see Steph Curry's name come up because starting on the 29th of August he's extension eligible for his contract," Windhorst said."I have argued that it should be considered that Curry not sign his contract extension right now.

Right now, it isn't clear whether Josh Kushner and Bob Iger will end up buying only Mark Walter's majority share of the Lakers, or if they will also purchase the minority share the Buss family continues to currently own. Walter, who bought his majority stake last year from the Buss family, agreed to sell it to Kushner and Iger last week, and five of the six Buss siblings, except for Jeanie Buss, voted to sell their 17.8% stake to Kushner and Iger on Monday.
In Walter's brief time as the team's majority owner, the Lakers have started to build out their business and basketball operations and move past being operated in a manner akin to a mom-and-pop store. But that process isn't complete, and NBA reporter Brian Windhorst said on "The Hoop Collective" podcast that the franchise is now in a "hiring freeze."
"The crazy thing here is that the Lakers were in the middle of this makeover for their team," said Windhorst. "… I know of one guy who was a front office guy who was in the middle of leaving one team to go to the Lakers, and now all of a sudden they're in a hiring freeze."
In recent months, the Lakers brought in former NCAA ****** le-winning coach Tony Bennett to be a draft advisor and Rohan Ramadas to be an ****** istant general manager in charge of ****** ytics and handling the salary cap, among others.
General manager Rob Pelinka said a few months ago that the team intended to hire two ****** istant general managers, but it hasn't brought on board that second ****** istant GM yet.

No matter where LeBron decides to go, it would be seen as him chasing rings, since almost every team in the league already has stars. "Where does Charles and the legends want LeBron to go? Do they want him to go to the G League? Because if he went to Cleveland, is that team stacked? Is Miami with Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo is that team stacked? Jokic and Jamal Murray is that team stacked? Ant Edwards, Rudy Gobert I don't know; he left Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves is that not? I don't understand the premise of the complaint," Windhorst said in response. — 7/28/2026 basketballnews.com

Heat, 76ers, Cavaliers reportedly finalists in bidding war for $101M ex-Laker 4-time NBA champion originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The NBA world is still awaiting a decision from LeBron James, as free agency has been underway for three weeks. James spent last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, but that chapter has come to an end.
James is the biggest free agent on the market, putting much of the league on hold as teams wait for his decision. This marks the fifth time in his career that he has entered free agency.
“For the first time since 2018, LeBron James is available in free agency. James informed the Los Angeles Lakers last month that he intends to play his 24th NBA season elsewhere, ending his eight-year run with the franchise. The 41-year-old is now an unrestricted free agent, coming off a season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 **** ists and 6.1 rebounds on 51.5% shooting. In other words: James can still help a team, which is exactly what he intends to do,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Bobby Marks wrote.
James appears to be nearing a decision and reportedly has five teams to choose from.

The NBA world is still waiting for LeBron James to choose his next team as the last major domino to fall this offseason. Other players need LeBron off the market before other teams go after them. The free agency period has stalled until James announces his destination to get things going again. NBA insider Brian Windhorst revealed that owners and General Managers are no longer getting any calls from LeBron or his agent Rich Paul.
Windhorst said the following about James calling players instead of speaking with team figureheads:
“Some of the owners who are trying to get LeBron James (on the phone) were talking to each other and were like ‘have you heard anything? Nope. Have you heard anything? Nope.’ LeBron is reaching out and talking to players on some of these teams and they report back to their GM or coach ‘Hey, LeBron called.”
Players from the teams interested in LeBron have been getting phone calls or messages from James. The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly have had Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown reaching out to LeBron as part of the recruiting process. It now appears that every team with a realistic chance has had some of their players answering questions when James reached out.
The reports and rumors continue to fly, but no one seems to have a good read on LeBron’s next team. Betting sites have made the Cleveland Cavaliers the favorite for weeks now due to the hometown appeal and a chance to contend with a deep roster.

Cavaliers predicted to land released $73M six-time All-Star to lure ex-Laker LeBron James home originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The pursuit of LeBron James is in full swing, and a decision could be coming soon. The Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Philadelphia 76ers are widely viewed as the three frontrunners in the race.
James is a free agent for the fifth time in his career, and, as in each of his previous decisions, the basketball world is watching closely to see where he will sign. One thing is certain: he informed the Lakers at the beginning of free agency that he would be moving on.

Cavaliers' Kenny Atkinson drops strong ex-Laker LeBron James hint amid free agency rumors originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The biggest free agent this summer is undoubtedly LeBron James, as he has put the entire NBA on hold while making his decision. James is entering his 24th NBA season and could potentially be playing for his fourth different team of his career.
James is weighing all of his options and wants to join a contender with a legitimate chance to win a championship. He informed the Lakers at the beginning of free agency that he would not be returning to Los Angeles.
"LeBron James will return for an unprecedented 24th season in the NBA -- but it won't be with the Los Angeles Lakers. James has informed the Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday," ESPN wrote.
A reunion with the Cleveland Cavaliers has become a legitimate possibility due to the team's current situation. One of the biggest factors is that James Harden is reportedly waiting to finalize a deal to help create an opportunity for James to join Cleveland. However, ESPN's Brian Windhorst believes James could be headed elsewhere.

Paul also noted that as much as winning matters at James' next destination, the conversations are about "everything" and are "deeper than the average person would think about." Heat Central: Brian Windhorst believes Miami and Cleveland are in their own category for LeBron’s next team: “One other thing I think is going to come down here that LeBron will have to decide is how much he cares about what people will think if he goes to a team he’s never played for before. Basically if he chooses somebody besides CLE or MIA. CLE or MIA, it’s a very clean decision. It makes sense. Both of them have cases. Does he want to deal with in his life what the reaction will be if he went to Philadelphia, MIN, DEN? Also deal with people calling him a ring chaser. I think that’s an extra layer. I think CLE and MIA are in their own category. To this day he repeats Miami Heat Mantras. When I watch him play and hear him talk, you feel the Miami Heat part of his basketball DNA.” (Via YahooSports)

Ever since becoming an unrestricted free agent, LeBron James hasn’t said a word about where he’ll play next season.
But that hasn’t stopped the NBA world from trying to read between the lines.
With NBA free agency still underway, every update involving the four-time NBA champion sparks fresh speculations. ESPN insider Brian Windhorst added to that conversation, suggesting the “vibes” around the league are beginning to point in one direction.
Even so, he stopped short of calling it a certainty, acknowledging that predicting LeBron’s next move has never been a straightforward affair.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have home-court advantage in luring LeBron James to them in free agency. That leverage has reportedly left rival teams across the league feeling hopeless in their pursuit.
“Everybody I’ve talked to is like ‘we’re afraid it’s Cleveland,” said ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. “Nobody seems like they have optimism.“
Most of the league is going after the King. Even at 41 years old, James brings value that few others can replicate. He’s seen as the missing piece for numerous teams that are desperate to reach the next level. Only one of the greatest of all time can control the offseason like this.
Notable teams that are interested in James include the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers. Windhorst says the Sixers fear they’ve already lost the war.

As fans try to make sense of the head-scratching trade that sent Jaylen Brown to the 76ers for Paul George and picks, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst shared an interesting internal perspective.
On the Hoop Collective, the NBA insider shared that Boston didn’t believe Brown was the best active player on the roster in 2025-26.
“I just know that the Celtics felt that even though Jaylen Brown was talking about himself for MVP, or there was this MVP campaign for Jaylen Brown, the Celtics did not feel that Jaylen had the best season on their team — and I don’t mean Jayson Tatum," Windhorst said. “They felt that Derrick White had a better season.
“The statistics that people use to **** yze said that.”
It’s a fascinating **** sment considering the season White delivered.

Fans of the Boston Celtics now find themselves in an awkward position of agreeing with the same national media they spend the last week decrying. After a week of reports of star Boston forward Jaylen Brown's value being in the toilet due to advanced metrics, his contract situation, future earnings potential, and/or his tendency to express himself in the media and on his streaming channel, fans are hearing that same national media chastise the Celtics over the lack of a haul Boston came away with after dealing Brown.
And rightfully so for making a move that has been hailed as among the worst in the history of the team. Make no mistake about it, regardless of what utility spreadsheets can legitimately add to a basketball team, this was a colossal self-own no matter what such inputs hinted might make sense for Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and company with regard to Brown's future with the ball club. So why did they do it, then?
If you ask one member of said national media, the word of the day is 'duress'. On a recent episode of "SportsCenter," senior ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst laid out how he saw what went into the deal, and what he has heard about it from other ball clubs. "Other teams in the league felt like this looked like a trade that was made under duress, that you wouldn't make this trade if everything was equal," said Windhorst. "I look forward to hearing an explanation from the Celtics side because I cannot explain it on its face."
"Even if they wanted to move on from Jaylen Brown and even if they didn't like the offers that they had today, it doesn't make sense why this trade would have to happen now," added the ESPN reporter.
"Even if you believe that ... Brown had played his last game for you, there's no reason to feel any pressure to make this move on July 1st. I promise you that there would have been other opportunities. And not only that, to make it to a team that is in your conference, your division, a team that just vanquished you in the playoffs, the more you look at it, the more mystifying it gets. The Celtics are a team that is very studied, doesn't make any move without thinking it through."

Fullcourtpass: The Boston Celtics believe Derrick White had a better season than Jaylen Brown last year, per WindhorstESPN "Even though Jaylen Brown was talking about himself for MVP, the Celtics did not feel like Jaylen had the best season on their team. The King and the Joker together?
Is it possible that LeBron James could join the Denver Nuggets?
The 41-year-old James plans to play in 2026-27 for his 24th NBA season, but he's informed the Lakers it will be with another team.
It seems like the Nuggets may be at least somewhat interested in pairing James with star Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets have reached out to James, the Denver Post reported on July 1.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN said he has "long believed" the Nuggets could be an "outlier" team in part because of James' admiration for Jokic.

The NBA world buzzed on Monday when a potential LeBron James-Anthony Davis reunion in Golden State emerged.
After Draymond Green opted out of his $27.7 million contract, speculations became rampant that James and AD could take their talents to the Bay Area to team up with Stephen Curry and eventually Green.
Just one day into free agency on Tuesday, things are turning out to be more complicated than many predicted. The Warriors’ reported pursuit of Davis isn’t as simple as it seemed.
The first reported obstacle in the speculated James-Davis signing with the Warriors came from NBA insider Brian Windhorst hours before free agency opened. Windhorst said on “Get Up” that the “Warriors told Jimmy Butler they’re not trading him.”
Butler’s $56.8 million contract is the easiest match to Davis’ $58.5 million deal for a trade to happen.

During their NBA free agency special on Tuesday, ESPN's Brian Windhorst suggested the Cleveland Cavaliers may pursue Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.
Windhorst stated that "the league changed" when LeBron James decided to leave the Los Angeles Lakers and become a free agent. After the Celtics were willing to include Brown in a potential deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP may no longer want to play for Boston following such rumors.
While this was not directly a report by Windhorst, the NBA insider is very plugged in with Cleveland and may have made an educated guess or hint about what the Cavaliers are currently thinking:
According to Windhorst, after James Harden opted out of his contract, the 2018 NBA MVP is willing to do whatever he can to help improve the roster in Cleveland. Perhaps the longtime Boston standout fills that gap.
If the Cavaliers could get Brown, per Windhorst, that would grab the "attention" of the four-time NBA Finals MVP now that he will not return to Los Angeles.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst revealed on the Hoop Collective podcast that Dusty May -- the newly hired Dallas Mavericks head coach and reigning national championship-winning coach at Michigan -- would have been on the Warriors' coaching short list had Kerr chosen not to return. "I think had Steve Kerr not re-signed in Golden State, Dusty May would have been on the Warriors' short list," Windhorst said. "I think he was on the short list a couple of other places, and he was clearly on the short list for the Mavericks."

Brian Windhorst finally has a theory for why LeBron James took a swipe at him on ESPN’s airwaves, and it involves a doctored photo.
Appearing on The Press Box with Bryan Curtis, Windhorst addressed LeBron’s unprovoked shot at him during his March 2025 appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, in which LeBron dismissed ESPN’s senior NBA reporter as a “weird” guy who goes around claiming to be his best friend.
“He was just angry at Stephen A., and he had seen me say something on First Take,” Windhorst said. “I’ve never once said I was his best friend, ever. I’ve never, ever claimed to be a LeBron expert. Many, many people have attached that to me. I’ve never said those words — I don’t think — and if I did, it was not a sincere way to say it. I’ve never seen myself as anything but a journalist covering a great athlete.”
From there, Windhorst floated what he believes may have been the actual trigger. Whenever he appeared on The Pat McAfee Show, there was a running joke about Windhorst being LeBron’s high school teammate, which, technically speaking, was never true. Windhorst did attend St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, the same school LeBron attended, but he was seven years ahead of him. As part of the bit, The McAfee Show created a doctored photo of Windhorst’s face plastered onto one of LeBron’s high school team pictures. Windhorst’s theory is that LeBron saw the image and may not have understood that it was The McAfee Show that made it, not Windhorst himself.
“I do wonder about when he saw that picture if he thought I put that picture out or something,” Windhorst said. “I doubt he had watched The McAfee Show and seen my appearances and seen how Pat and the guys. They have conceits that they joke around with. I doubt he was aware of that. I’m not sure he knew the origin of it.”

Timberwolves Reportedly Tried Trading For Celtics' Jaylen Brown Before LaMelo Ball originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Celtics made Jaylen Brown available during trade talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to NBA insider Shams Charania, and other teams are reportedly trying to get him now that the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes is over.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Tuesday that other teams were preparing for the scenario where the Celtics did not land Antetokounmpo, so that they could try to make offers on Brown. Windhorst said five to ten teams could get involved in trade talks for Brown, and according to The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski, the Minnesota Timberwolves were one of those teams.
The Timberwolves pulled off a blockbuster trade for LaMelo Ball on Thursday, sending Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps and three second-round picks to the Charlotte Hornets. However, they also discussed Brown with the Celtics.
"The Wolves did have discussions with the Celtics on Jaylen Brown as well, sources told The Athletic," Krawczynski wrote on X. "But they saw LaMelo Ball as fitting more of what they needed, for likely less compensation going out."
