Jul. 24—SIOUX FALLS — 'Week 0' isn't a new frontier in college football.
But teams in the Missouri Valley Football Conference are embracing the first chance to get on the field for 2026, which means the opening games of the new season are coming sooner on the calendar.
Eight of the nine Missouri Valley teams are playing on the first weekend of the season, a week before the traditional Labor Day weekend start as in past seasons. (Only Northern Iowa is not in action for Week 0 this year.) Seven of the eight MVFC schools in action on the opening weekend are playing fellow Division I schools.
"I'm a huge supporter of not only starting earlier but getting the season done earlier," UND coach Eric Schmidt said. "There's no reason not to. Especially with everything that happens at the end of the season with championship games and trying to get kids into school. College football has always been a New Year's Day-ish postseason sport, where the season is coming to a close. I think it makes sense for these (players) as far as their schedules go, as well."
Schmidt noted that the last weekend in August is expected to become the new opening week for both FBS and FCS college football in the future, so FCS teams are getting a taste of what the schedule is expected to be going forward. That is a potential downside for the FCS: whatever standalone spotlight they've gotten in the past with their games is likely to be short lived as the FBS moves more games to Week 0, as well, making room for the expanded postseason at the end of the year.

It was a rare display of emotion for Miles Russell.
Junior golf's undisputed No. 1 for almost three years, Russell has collected trophy after trophy with a calm, quiet confidence. But on Friday afternoon at Saucon Valley Country Club, the 17-year-old Russell couldn't help but unleash a fist pump after a go-ahead, chip-in eagle on the 13th hole.
Russell carded two eagles and five birdies in a 2-and-1 victory over incoming Vanderbilt freshman Tyler Mawhinney to advance to Saturday's 36-hole final of the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Mawhinney is a highly decorated prospect in his own right at No. 102 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and with a USGA ***** le already to his name (2025 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball). He entered Friday's bout with Russell, the world's seventh-ranked amateur, having played the par-3 in 8 under for the week. He was 7 under in 17 holes against Russell and still lost.
The turning point came at the drivable, par-4 13th, where both players went for the green and found the gnarly greenside rough. Mawhinney hit his chip to 5 feet before Russell popped his ball out of the rough and just onto the putting surface, then watched as it motored right into the cup.

Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach has one more opponent and 36 holes to play, with less than 14 hours to recharge for the championship match against Noah Maclauchlan on July 25 at the Saucon Valley Golf and Country Club Old Course in Bethlehem, Pa., beginning at 8 a.m.
Russell beat Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island 2 and 1 on July 24 after he rolled in a delicate, downhill 12-foot birdie putt at No. 17 and Mawhinney barely missed on the low side for birdie from 10 feet.

While the Penn State Nittany Lions lost a lot of production in the 2026 NFL Draft, fans were already questioning whether or not several of Penn State's returning options could be seen as draft picks in 2027. Well, after an offseason of change, there certainly seems like the Nittany Lions have a new look about them. So when the Shriners East-West Bowl watch list came out, it should have been no surprise that Penn State was well represented on the list.
Most importantly, it pointed out a major early win for new head coach Matt Campbell. Not only did Penn State place nineteen total players on the watch list, but fifteen of them were transfers from this year's portal cycle. In fact, thirteen of them come from Matt Campbell's former school, Iowa State. The headliners of the list include QB Rocco Becht, linebackers Kooper Ebel, Caleb Bacon, and Tony Rojas, and wide receivers Brett Eskildsen and Chase Sowell.
The other two transfers on the list were influenced by new defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn after he came to Happy Valley from UCLA. Still, no matter the former programs each player represented, it's still highly impressive that in his first offseason, Matt Campbell was able to bring over such highly coveted talent. While the main question will still be about his future recruiting efforts, this offseason's transfer haul at least showed signs of positivity in terms of the program's direction.
Perhaps the craziest thing about several of the players on the list is that they may not all enter the draft at the same time. At least five or six players could return to Happy Valley at the end of this season. That continuity could prove to be more important than any preseason hype these players are getting. If they are already receiving this hype with multiple years of eligibility left, that's a good sign for Campbell's long-term planning with the squad.
The bottom line is that a lot of people are still high on the new talent in Happy Valley. The question of whether that translates to on-field success remains to be seen.

RAGBRAI 2026 already was challenging, starting with two days of nearly 100-degree heat and thousands of feet of elevation gain as it ascended from the Missouri River valley.
Even the cooler Day 3 on Tuesday, July 21, was a challenge on the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, with a stiff headwind pushing back on the riders during the second half.
But an even bigger challenge lay ahead on Day 5, Thursday, July 23, for a self-selected few.
Near the end of Thursday's 87.1 miles ― already the longest of the week ― lay the annual Karras Century Loop, an optional chance to turn the day into a more than 100-mile trek. And for those seeking the ultimate feat, the ride organizers had mapped out a second, add-on loop that would bring the day's total for anyone completing it to 160 miles ― roughly 250 kilometers in honor of America's 250th birthday year.
By the time those who accepted the challenge arrived in the overnight town of Independence, they had ridden the longest one-day route in RAGBRAI's 53-year history.

Mississippi has, to put it mildly, a complicated history when it comes to race relations. Even as times have changed and attitudes have modernized, a number of the all-time best athletes to compete in college sports did so at schools other than the state’s flagship campuses.
From our perspective, however, it has made the task of choosing the 10 greatest college players more fun. Six different schools are represented on this list, including some hall-of-fame gridiron talents from the state’s trio of HBCU’s. The 2026 Tour de France will meet the famous 21 hairpins of Alpe d’Huez on Friday, in the first of two back-to-back days scaling the famous peak. But it is the second journey, up the lesser travelled Col de Sarenne, which has provoked protest, a petition and criticism of race organisers.
The route for this year’s Tour was announced at a Paris ceremony last October. Saturday’s stage 20 immediately stood out, partly as a rare double ascent of Alpe d’Huez, perhaps the most famous mountain in Tour de France lore; and partly because the stage is brutal in its own right. It features 5,000m of elevation gain over four Tour behemoths: the Croix de Fer, the Col du Telegraphe, Col du Galibier, and finally the Col de Sarenne – the eastern back road up the Alpe – before an undulating final 14km to the finish, via the final four hairpins of the traditional route.
The Col de Sarenne is an unusual pass for the Tour to tackle. This is the first time it has been used as an ascent, after it was used once as a descent in 2013. The debate back then was about rider safety, with sheer drops either side of the narrow, uneven path near the top, and hay bales were hastily planted along the road’s edge to protect a disgruntled peloton.
Ahead of this year’s return to the Col de Sarenne, environmentalists have led protests against race organiser ASO and its decision to send the world’s biggest bike race over the Sarenne pass in the Ferrand Valley, part of Ecrins National Park and an ecologically sensitive area.
A petition which garnered more than 15,000 signatures called for the stage to be re-routed away from the “beautiful and wild” area, which the petition stresses is home to numerous animals including stoats, marmots, foxes, chamois, eagles, bearded vultures, ptarmigan, rock partridges and the rare black grouse, whose chicks hatch in July.

The population of the town was nearly 8,000; there was just one class of high school baseball in Iowa – Elvis Presley returned to perform in Las Vegas after eight years away, to the day – and the National Balloon Classic event had not yet made its way to Indianola.
The conversation throughout the Indianola baseball team from the start of the 2026 season was not just to make the Class 4A state championship game, but to win the first state crown in program history.

July 22 (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices will sell Anthropic tens of billions of dollars' worth of AI servers and invest as much as $5 billion in the Claude ‌maker, in a deal that would strengthen its foothold in a market dominated by rival Nvidia.
The ‌announcement on Wednesday marks the latest so-called circular deal in the AI industry, where chipmakers invest in AI firms that are among their biggest customers. Nvidia has been in talks to invest $30 billion in ChatGPT creator OpenAI.
Buying AMD chips would secure Anthropic much-needed AI computing capacity. The startup has emerged as one of the leaders in Silicon Valley's artificial intelligence race, thanks to strong adoption of its enterprise tools such as Claude Code.
"It's strategically significant, as each win deepens AMD's credibility as the ‌number-two to Nvidia and supports the slow, ⁠steady share gains underpinning its AI growth story," said Emarketer ****** yst Jacob Bourne.

Miles Russell closed out his Round-of-16 match in impressive fashion Thursday afternoon at the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Leading opponent Reed Arnaldo, 1 up, Russell got aggressive on the 324-yard, par-4 18th hole at Saucon Valley Country Club's Old Course, taking driver and hitting his tee ball to 5 feet.
With Russell looking at an automatic birdie, at worst, Arnaldo ended up conceding the hole to the country's top-ranked junior before Russell needed to even play his second stroke. Russell's 2-up win sent him into Friday morning's quarterfinals, where he'll face Dylan Boenning, who advanced with a 19-hole victory over Owen Coniaris.
Russell, who is also the world's seventh-ranked amateur and already a member of this year's U.S. Walker Cup team, is attempting to win his first Tiger Woods trophy, the new name of the U.S. Junior's coveted prize, and complete what would be considered the modern grand slam of boys junior golf.
Russell, 17, has already twice won the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley (2025, 2026) and AJGA Junior Players Championship (2023, 2025), while also winning the 2023 Junior PGA Championship.

USC quarterback Jayden Maiava enters the 2026 season as one of the top signal callers in college football. However, the accolades that Maiava has received go beyond the field of play.

Arrakis, a seven-month old London- and Paris-based startup building what it calls an AI "operating system" for industrial companies, is emerging from stealth with $38 million in venture capital funding. It says its goal is to bring agentic AI to sectors such aerospace, energy, logistics, and manufacturing.

The company's latest funding is a $30 million Series A led by Blossom Capital, with participation from venture capital firms Accel, GFC, MainObject, and Rerail. Accel led an earlier $7.5 million seed round, and individual backers include Datadog CEO Olivier Pomel and OpenAI's head of business products, Olivier Godement.

The latest round values the company at $140 million post-money, cofounder and CEO Rafael Quintanilla told Fortune.

Quintanilla is a former vice president at Accel. While there, he spent the better part of a year crisscrossing the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East to develop the firm's thesis on defense and industrial resilience. What he found convinced him to quit and become a founder himself.
"I realized that there was a huge gap between what I was seeing at Accel and in the Valley, with us investing in companies like Anthropic and Lovable in Europe," he said, "and what I was seeing in the more industrial parts of the economy."

He said that most AI has targeted so-called knowledge workers who complete their jobs using software, but that many more jobs in the economy involve the production and movement of physical goods. "Most AI investment to date has targeted the 30% of workers behind a desk. The real ROI lies in the 70% running industrial operations," he said.
Sonali de Rycker, the Accel partner who backed Arrakis's seed round, said she is betting on the founder as much as the market. "Rafa has a rare combination of curiosity, hustle and tireless drive," she told Fortune. "After working closely with Rafa during his time at Accel, it's an honour to be working with him again as an entrepreneur."
But Arrakis is hardly alone in going after manufacturing and industrial firms. Consulting giants such as Accenture and Boston Consulting Group are racing into industrial AI, as is Palantir, and Jeff Bezos-backed Prometheus—now valued in the tens of billions of dollars—is pouring capital into automating the engineering of physical products. The frontier labs are circling too.
Quintanilla argues Arrakis is carving out a distinct niche from each of these competitors. If Prometheus worked with Airbus, he said, it would build AI for "the core engineering of building an aircraft." He said Arrakis, by contrast, "want[s] to take care of everything around it… We want to be the AI layer for key operations of those companies."

The proposed joint venture would bring together AdventHealth's five hospitals, urgent care centers, medical practices and off-site emergency clinics around Denver with Intermountain's three hospitals and related practices in the area, the systems announced Tuesday.
AdventHealth and Intermountain have signed a letter of intent and anticipate signing a definitive agreement in the next few weeks. The transaction is expected to close early next year if it clears regulatory hurdles, the systems said.
The joint venture would bring together AdventHealth hospitals Avista, Castle Rock, Littleton, Parker and Porter with Intermountain hospitals Good Samaritan, Lutheran and Platte Valley, along with related clinics.

Renewable energy developer Avantus said its Aratina 1 solar-plus-storage project has entered commercial operation in California. The 200-MW/500-MWh installation in Kern County has long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Central Coast Community Energy (3CE) and Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE), a pair of community choice aggregators.Avantus on July 20 said the company will have a controlling stake in Aratina 1 and will operate the facility. The company said the project is among several **** ets it will oversee as it expands from a clean energy developer to an independent power producer (IPP)."Aratina 1 coming online marks a major milestone for Avantus as an independent power producer, providing reliable clean power to California communities for decades to come," said Cliff Graham, CEO of Avantus. Avantus said a consortium of lenders, including Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., Truist Securities, ING Capital, and Mizuho, provided financing of more than $500 million for Aratina 1. The project also secured a $300-million tax equity commitment from Truist Bank. Officials said the project created about 500 jobs at peak construction."The clean power generated from the Aratina project gets us one step closer to our climate goals. New projects like this are critical in increasing statewide clean capacity and reliability as we reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and move towards an all-electric future," said Monica Padilla, CEO of SVCE.Avantus on Monday said that Aratina 2, the second phase of the Aratina Solar Center, located adjacent to Aratina 1, is currently under construction. Aratina 2 recently closed more than $525 million in financing and is targeting commercial operation before year-end. After a strong showing at the NBA’s 2026 summer league in Las Vegas, the Houston Rockets announced Wednesday that Isaiah Crawford was re-signed by the team.
A 6-foot-6 forward with shooting potential on offense and considerable versatility on defense, Crawford is now 24 years old.

Crawford appeared in 14 games as a two-way player for the Rockets in 2025-26, averaging 11.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.0 ******* ists and 1.2 blocks per 36 minutes played. He recorded career highs of 11 points and 6 rebounds in the season finale versus Memphis on April 12.
In 20 games while transferred to the Rockets’ G League affiliate, Rio Grande Valley, Crawford averaged 19.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.1 ******* ists, and 2.1 steals while shooting 51.5% from the floor and 39.2% from 3-point range.

Jay Flanagan is going to experience life down the shore in the wintertime.
The longtime boys’ basketball coach in Burlington County was approved for the same position at Lower Cape May High School by the board of education on Wednesday.
Flanagan, who spends his summers in North Wildwood, recently retired as a teacher and coach at Rancocas Valley after two decades. He led the Red Devils to a 15-14 record last winter, raising his win total to 350 with the RV program in 20 years.
“I am excited for this new opportunity,” Flanagan said in an email on Wednesday night. “I never thought I would leave RV but things have changed there with a new administration. I had a great 20 years there and will truly miss it.
“I cannot thank my former players who stayed loyal to the program over the years enough for their support. I am still so close to many of them. The next two years will be very strong for RV basketball. The returning players are great young men with a lot of promise. I wish them nothing but the best and I will surely be one of their biggest fans from afar.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) — Charlie Woods failed to reach match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur after falling short in a 14-player playoff for two spots.
The son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods was tied for 63rd on Tuesday after shooting rounds of 76 and 70 over two courses at Saucon Valley for a 5-over total. He was eliminated with a bogey Wednesday after being bothered by the clicking sound of a phone camera during his third shot of the first playoff hole, a distraction that would not likely come into play for other juniors.
Woods hit his second shot on the par-5 first hole into the rough near the green, but flubbed his third shot when he heard the camera during his swing.
“Really, dude?” an irritated Woods said after the shot. “I mean, come on.”
Miles Russell, Woods’ future teammate at Florida State, was the stroke play co-medalist at 6-under 135.

Throughout his tenure with Iowa State, Matt Campbell never seemed like he could be tempted away from the Cyclones to take on a bigger job with a more prestigious program. That is, until Penn State came calling last year.
Still, even though Campbell left for new pastures, there were expectations of how Iowa State would transition. It was said that Taylor Mouser, Campbell's longtime ****** istant and offensive coordinator, would be set to ****** ume head-coaching duties. However, that did not become the case.
Instead of sticking with familiarity for the role, Iowa State went into complete reset mode with the hiring of Jimmy Rogers. While Rogers proved to have a solid year at Washington State, he is a clear step behind Mouser when it comes to experience with Iowa State's roster. It didn't even matter all that much, as 55 members of Iowa State's squad left this past transfer portal cycle. A total of 23 of them followed Campbell and Mouser to Happy Valley.
Mouser brings with him tons of experience along with an understanding of how Penn State's new-look offense will operate. He worked his way up in Ames, starting out as a grad ****** istant and working his way up to offensive coordinator over 10 years with the Cyclones program. Now, he gets a chance to run an offense competing in perhaps the best conference in college football. He has a built-in connection with new Penn State QB Rocco Becht that could flourish against better competition.
The bottom line is that Iowa State seemed too willing to take a risk, and Penn State was able to be the ultimate beneficiaries. While Year 1 of the Campbell/ Mouser regime is a huge question mark, many expect it to be much better than what Iowa State can muster up.

Charlie Woods, the 17-year-old son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, saw his time at the U.S. Junior Amateur at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania come to an end in frustrating fashion during a playoff.
Woods teed up on the par-5, 584-yard first hole knowing he needed a birdie after the two players ahead of him shot under par on the hole. As he attempted to get to the green in two, he second shot landed short left of the green in the rough.
While attempting his third shot about 25 yards from the green, a camera clicked as he was in his backswing. The shot out of the rough did not go well for the Florida State commit, who turned and said, "Really, dude?"
Woods needed to chip in on his fourth shot to make birdie, but failed to do so and then missed a par save. He ended up bogeying the hole and was eliminated in the 14-for-2 playoff for one of the final spots in the round of 64 matchplay field.
Woods, whose dad won the event three straight times from 1991-1993, had shot rounds of 76 and 70 during stroke play to claim a spot in the sudden-death playoff on Wednesday. It was his best showing at the junior championship after shooting rounds of 82 and 80 in 2024 and 80 and 74 last year.
