"Back in the late '90s, when I was diagnosed with hepatitis C, there was no cure," Anderson said. "I'm sure that colored and corrupted my decisions. It was not fear of death but fear of what might happen to my young children. It turned my life inside out."
The "Baywatch" actress disclosed her diagnosis in 2002, and said she got hepatitis C by sharing a needle with ex-husband rock drummer Tommy Lee. Lee has denied this. Hepatitis C, a viral infection that primarily affects the liver, can exist quietly in the body and is easy to overlook. The infection is spread from blood-to-blood contact. Sharing needles or syringes is the most common cause of new infections, according to Dr. William Carey, a senior hepatologist at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ: GILD) has no major concerns about its HIV franchise until the next decade. That hasn't kept the pharmaceutical company from preparing for the loss of exclusivity for its legacy HIV therapies. Gilead has spent heavily on its pipeline, and that's paying off.
The company has received three Food and Drug (FDA) approvals over the past four months, and not coincidentally, its shares are up more than 21% so far this year, nearly doubling the S&P 500 index's rise. Pfizer's (NYSE:PFE) newer medicines are gaining traction, but that growth has yet to accelerate the wider business. Gilead (NASDAQ:GILD) is expanding faster, although its performance remains concentrated in one therapeutic area. For investors, this is ultimately a choice between an unfinished turnaround and a stronger growth story still searching for greater breadth.
Pfizer's (NYSE:PFE) strongest result was the performance of its non-COVID portfolio. Revenue excluding Comirnaty and Paxlovid grew 5% operationally, while launched and acquired products generated $3.2 billion and increased 18% operationally. Growth also came from several franchises. Padcev revenue rose 23% operationally to $667 million, supported by increased market share in bladder cancer. The Vyndaqel family generated $1.76 billion, up 8% operationally, while Lorbrena grew 37% operationally. These products give Pfizer more than one avenue for rebuilding revenue as COVID-related demand declines.
Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) lowered its 2026 COVID-product forecast from approximately $5 billion to $4 billion after low infection levels weighed on Paxlovid utilization. Nevertheless, stronger-than-expected non-COVID sales allowed the company to raise the midpoint of its total revenue guidance by $500 million. Cost reductions provide additional support for the company. Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) expects approximately $6.7 billion in savings from its cost-realignment program through 2029. A separate manufacturing-optimization program is expected to generate another $3 billion, bringing anticipated savings across the two programs to approximately $9.7 billion. This leaner cost base could help Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) preserve margins and continue investing in areas such as oncology and obesity.
Gilead (NASDAQ:GILD), however, is currently delivering much stronger underlying growth. Product sales excluding Veklury increased 10% to $7.6 billion, and HIV sales rose 12% to $5.7 billion, with Biktarvy revenue increasing 7% to $3.8 billion and Descovy sales climbing 48% to $967 million. Yeztugo, Gilead's (NASDAQ:GILD) twice-yearly injectable HIV-prevention medicine, contributed $232 million as its launch gained momentum. The product adds a potentially important growth driver to an already dominant HIV portfolio.
Growth, however, was not confined to HIV alone, as liver-disease sales increased 10% to $877 million, while Livdelzi revenue more than doubled from $78 million to $167 million. Trodelvy sales rose 26% to $457 million, providing further evidence that Gilead (NASDAQ:GILD) is building a meaningful oncology franchise. Management subsequently raised its 2026 product-sales outlook to $30.1–$30.4 billion and increased guidance for product sales excluding Veklury to $29.8–$30.1 billion.

NEW DELHI: India made one change to their playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday, with Kuldeep Yadav missing out after failing to fully recover from a viral infection and Saransh Jain making his Test debut.

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first, with the hosts also handing Test debuts to Kamil Mishara and Pasindu Sooriyabandara.

India entered the second Test with an unassailable 1-0 lead after their 165-run victory in the series opener at Galle. However, Kuldeep's absence meant India had to alter their combination, with Jain coming into the XI as the spin-bowling allrounder.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Kuldeep remains unavailable for selection but could still be used in a specific situation.

"Mr Kuldeep Yadav has not fully recovered from his viral illness. He was unavailable for selection in the Playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka. However, he can take the field as a concussion substitute, if required," the BCCI said.
Gill also addressed Kuldeep's absence after winning the toss, confirming that an infection had ruled out the left-arm wristspinner.

"[Playing XI] Kuldeep, unfortunately, had some infections, so he misses out, and Saransh makes his debut for India," Gill said.

With Kuldeep unavailable, Jain received his first opportunity at Test level. The 33-year-old was presented his India cap by Ravindra Jadeja during the team's huddle before the start of play.

Reflecting on India's dominant win in the first Test, Gill rated the team's performance highly but admitted there was still room for improvement.

"[How he would rate the Galle win] I would say probably a nine, because there's always room for improvement, and I think we played a pretty good match, a decent match. And obviously there were some areas where we could have got a little bit better, but, you know, this is Test cricket. It's very, very difficult to be able to have a near-perfect game because you're playing for five days, and to play that dominant and consistent cricket, especially in Test, is hard. But I think overall we had a pretty good match," Gill said.

Fight fans tuned in to LFA 239 on Friday night (Aug. 22, 2026) in hopes of some memorable MMA action, but instead they ended up witnessing one of the worst cases of staph infection to ever enter the cage.
Friday's LFA 239 event in Ventura, Calif., was headlined by a featherweight clash between Chris Mecate and Manuel Exposito. The fight itself was an entertaining back-and-forth that saw Mecate walk away with the unanimous decision win, but that's not what fans will remember the most. It will be the apparent staph infection that made Mecate's back look like it was about to pop.
While fight fans have seen some gnarly staph infections over the years it's usually not big enough to make a noticeable difference. That was not the case on Friday as Mecate's alleged staph infection took up a whole portion of his back. Making matters worse is that Exposito kept making contact with it. It's hard not to throughout 15 minutes of fighting, but still a gross scene to say the least.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bedbugs are sometimes called the vampires of the insect world — hiding during the day and coming out at night to feast on human blood. Generations of children have been told: "Sleep tight. Don't let the bedbugs bite."
Well, bad news: Bedbug infestations are increasing. This is the time of year when they tend to be at their worst. And some scientists think the reviled pests might be capable of spreading an antibiotic-resistant infection called MRSA.
For centuries, the bugs have horrified homeowners and occasionally panicked the public. That happened in New York City in 2018, when at least a half dozen city buses were taken out of service after reports of bedbugs crawling on seats. It happened again in Paris in 2023, when reports of bedbugs at a movie theater, on trains and on buses popped up in the lead-up to the 2024 Olympics.
"They certainly are out there," said Christopher Hayes, a North Carolina State University ******* istant professor who has been bitten by bedbugs more than 50 times in the course of research. "And if you're unaware, if you're not on top of your game, it's easy to bring them into your home."
Bedbugs are reddish-brown bloodsuckers about the size of an apple seed. Some researchers estimate they date back to the time of the dinosaurs, but they are best known for their unfortunate ability to live with — and prey on — humans.

Qiagen (NYSE:QGEN) walked into its second quarter of 2026 bracing investors for a roughly 2% sales decline. Instead, net sales came in flat at $535 million on August 6, and adjusted diluted EPS hit $0.62, both ahead of the company's own outlook. For a diagnostics and life sciences supplier still working through the loss of discontinued product lines, beating a cautious bar is one thing. What happens next, as management leans on a stack of new launches to carry the back half of the year, is the more interesting question.
The company's so-called growth pillars, the businesses management is counting on to outpace the broader market, expanded 5% at constant exchange rates in the quarter. Sample Technologies led with 9% CER growth, driven by automated consumables and higher instrument sales. QIAcuity, the digital PCR platform, posted double-digit consumables growth even as weaker OEM demand offset some of that strength. QuantiFERON, the tuberculosis test that had flagged a sharp drop in US immigration testing demand back in the first quarter, still managed to return to growth as demand across other testing groups more than made up the difference.
Behind those numbers sits a wave of product activity. QIAsymphony Connect launched commercially, QIAsprint Connect placements are drawing what management called strong pharma customer acceptance, and two new bloodstream infection panels for QIAstat launched in Europe, detecting 33 pathogens and 28 resistance markers in about an hour, with US FDA approval targeted by year-end. Parse, the single-cell ****** ysis business, is running ahead of its roughly $40 million 2026 sales target and was selected for a NASA-supported research program aboard the International ****** e Station. Qiagen also completed a $500 million share repurchase in January and raised its annual dividend 40% to $0.35 per share.
The flat top line masks uneven performance underneath. Diagnostic solutions overall declined 2% at constant currency, and PCR and nucleic acid amplification sales fell 8%, with QIAstat-Dx down 7% as a tough prior-year comparison in respiratory testing outweighed gains in gastrointestinal and meningitis panels. Profitability also gave ground. Adjusted operating income fell 2% to $157 million, with the margin slipping to 29.4% from 29.9% a year earlier, and adjusted gross margin declined to 66.2% from 66.7% on product mix shifts.
Regionally, EMEA sales fell 2% CER as declines in Germany, France, and Italy outweighed gains elsewhere, and Asia Pacific sales fell 2% CER as China dropped in the low teens, even though it improved sequentially. Inventory days outstanding also climbed to 153 from 149, tied to stockpiling ahead of new launches. The company is now guiding to a jump from roughly negative 1% CER sales growth in the first half to 3% to 4% in the second half, a swing that leans heavily on new products, easier comparisons and the fading drag from discontinued lines all landing on schedule.

An outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection known for causing explosive diarrhea that has been linked to recalled iceberg lettuce, has expanded to two additional states since early August, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
An unprecedented wave of infections has hit the United States since May, resulting in thousands of illnesses and two deaths. The CDC, which lags significantly behind states in reporting infections, pinpointed 13,895 laboratory-confirmed cases across 47 states between May 1 and its latest update on Aug. 10. At least 10,455 additional cases have not yet been confirmed by laboratories, the CDC said.

Health officials in Louisiana are urging beachgoers to take precautions during a summertime surge in infections from a flesh-eating bacteria found in coastal waters.
Louisiana has confirmed nine cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections this year, the state's health department said last week in a news release. All were hospitalized, and five died. During the same period over the previous decade, Louisiana reported an average of seven cases and one death.
"Seek medical care immediately if a wound exposed to brackish or salt water becomes red, swollen, painful, warm or discolored," officials said in the release. "Tell the health care provider about the water exposure."
Vibrio bacteria thrive in seawater and in the brackish mix of fresh and saltwater found in estuaries and lagoons. Most infections are reported from May to October, and most happen in states along the Gulf Coast. Doctors say the Gulf is an ideal environment with the right amounts of salt and heat to let this organism proliferate.
The mostly deadly type is Vibrio vulnificus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As many as one in five of those infections are fatal, a much higher rate than other types of Vibrio bacteria.

Five people have died in Louisiana from flesh-eating bacteria infections so far in 2026, state health officials said on August 6.
A total of nine cases of Vibrio vulnificus bacteria have been reported in 2026 in the state, the Louisiana Department of Health reported. All nine patients had underlying health conditions and were hospitalized after wounds had been exposed to seawater, officials said.
Vibrio vulnificus is often called "flesh-eating bacteria" because an infection can eat away at flesh around a wound. Infections can occur when an open wound is exposed to salt water or brackish water, where rivers meet the ocean and fresh water mixes with salt water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Louisiana health officials warned residents to take precautions to prevent infections because the bacterium's presence increases as coastal waters get warmer. Cases in Louisiana are higher than in past years, officials said. During the same period over the previous 10 years, Louisiana reported an annual average of seven cases and one death.

Florida health officials confirmed on Thursday that a second person has died in the state from the flesh-eating bacterium Vibrio vulnificus. The second death was reported in Marion County, and the first was reported in Palm Beach County. It marks the second death in the U.S. this year.

Pfizer has upgraded the bottom-end of its full-year (FY) revenue outlook by $500m as performance from the drugmaker's lead products more than compensated for weaker Covid-19-related sales.
Pfizer now expects 2026 revenue to land between $60.5bn and $62.5bn, up from the $59.5bn to $62.5bn range it previously forecast.
According to the big pharma company, the revised outlook reflects a $1.5bn better-than-expected performance from its non-Covid products. Sales for Covid-19 products, which include antiviral Paxlovid and mRNA vaccine Comirnaty, are conversely expected to bring in $1bn less. The former's sales were down 95% in Q2, while the latter dropped 34%.
Pfizer emerged as a pharmaceutical powerhouse during the pandemic, but lower infection rates and narrower use cases mean its Covid-19 brands are impacting the company's bottom line.
Pfizer still recorded revenues of $15bn in Q2, up 3% from the same quarter in 2025, meaning its non-Covid products more than offset headwinds. This figure beat consensus estimates, as per Citi ******* ysts.

Health officials are investigating jalapenos served at Chipotle restaurants as a possible source of a recent salmonella outbreak, the company confirmed to ABC News on Tuesday.
Chipotle told ABC News the ingredient was distributed to several food service retailers across multiple states. The company said it removed the jalapenos from select restaurants.

"We have a robust ingredient traceability system and, upon learning of a potential Salmonella outbreak in the supply chain impacting several food service retailers, we proactively identified jalapenos as a potential common ingredient from a common lot, removed them from the restaurants where they had been distributed, and replaced them with product from different growers," Laurie Schalow, Chipotle's chief corporate affairs and food safety officer, said in a statement.
Salmonella are bacteria that can cause a common foodborne illness called salmonellosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Infections tend to occur more in the summer, when warmer weather presents ideal conditions for the bacteria to grow, the agency states.

Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is an illness many often relegate to the history books. Florida, however, has recorded 17 infections this year as of July 18, according to state health data. Of the 174 cases recorded nationwide in 2025, 36 occurred in the state, including 27 that were contracted locally rather than abroad.
Hansen's disease affects up to 225 people in the United States and 250,000 globally every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While most cases are contracted abroad, the agency notes that Southern states have reported illnesses not linked to travel that were "likely contracted from armadillos."
In the past decade, roughly 223 cases were recorded in Florida, the majority of which occurred in Brevard County. Central Florida, specifically, appears to be a recurring hotspot, accounting for 81% of state cases and almost one-fifth of nationally reported cases, according to research published in the CDC's journal Emerging Infectious Diseases in 2023.
While it appears a pattern has emerged, scientists aren't entirely sure why. The same 2023 report concluded that an increase in leprosy infections in non-foreign-born residents that "lacked traditional risk factors" indicated that the disease is probably now endemic in parts of the United States, with one cited case in a landscaper raising questions about environmental exposure.

NEW YORK (AP) — A first-of-its-kind U.S. study suggests invasive mold infections may be an underappreciated — and potentially deadly — threat.
The researchers detected about 450 cases in Atlanta-area hospitals over five years. About a third of the patients died in the hospital.
The findings, published this week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, come from an attempt to better gauge how common these kinds of illnesses are. The government does not require doctors to report the illnesses.
"It's kind of the first time we've had an estimate like this," said the CDC's Dr. Jeremy Gold, the study's senior author.
And it's important to understand it now, because the problem may grow in the future, he added. Mold exposure is a recurring problem in the wake of hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters influenced by climate change, researchers have found.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela confirmed on Tuesday that three people died of infections of hantavirus, but stressed there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the South American country, which has rarely reported cases of the rodent-borne disease in humans.
The Health Ministry said hantavirus was also suspected in the deaths of two health workers in the southwestern state of Barinas. Those cases remain under investigation and were not linked to the three fatalities in the eastern state of Anzoátegui, about 655 kilometers (407 miles) away.
Both states were spared the worst of the back-to-back major earthquakes that hit northern Venezuela earlier this month.
The ministry described the deaths in Anzoátegui and Barinas as isolated incidents that "do not represent a risk to the general community." But it added that health workers would be sent to the affected states to "guarantee the health security of all Venezuelans," without elaborating.
The Venezuelan Medical Federation, a national professional group, said the deaths in Anzoátegui were from the same family in the rural municipality of Miranda in the south of the state.

Taco Bell has narrowed down its focus on ingredients linked to an ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened thousands of people nationwide. The suspected culprit: lettuce.
The fast-food chain said July 16 it had removed lettuce from one of its suppliers in select states after reports linked the ingredient to the growing cases of the stomach-churning parasitic infection that causes diarrhea and nausea across several states.
"Based on ongoing conversations with public health officials, and out of an abundance of caution, Taco Bell has taken immediate action to voluntarily remove potentially impacted lettuce from a supplier in select states," the company said in a statement.
The lettuce supplied by the vendor would be "indefinitely removed" from its supply chain nationwide and replaced within 24 hours in affected states, according to Taco Bell. The company did not identify the supplier or specify which states were affected by the removal.
