Burma's government approved the death penalty as punishment for internet scammers just months after the Fbi announced a sweeping $8 billion crackdown on scam networks coming from the country, according to the country's state-backed media.
The Anti-Online Scam Law passed the country's parliament on Tuesday, green lighting the death penalty for anyone who participates in a scam in which they "commit violence, torture, unlawfully arrest or detain, or treat any person in a cruel manner," according to The Global New Light of Myanmar, a media outlet jointly operated by a private company and the country's Ministry of the Interior.
Burma, also known as Myanmar, has become ground zero for digital scams, with criminals often recruiting migrants from other Asian countries with promises of legitimate work only to imprison them and force them to conduct the scams.
In May, the FBI announced a massive crackdown on a criminal network in Burma known as the "Democratic Karen Benevolent Army." The operation resulted in the seizure of 127,000 Bitcoin, worth over $8 billion as of July.

It's time for the annual post to highlight how the Mountain West Conference compares to the American Athletic Conference in a variety of important categories. Since this yearly post began, the American has had the advantage overall, although the MW narrowed the gap in 2024. Which one was the top Group of 5 conference in 2024? Read below to find out.
The Mountain West and American don't have many opportunities to play each other from season to season, and it's sad that that hasn't changed over the years. In 2024, the conferences played one another four times, with two of those being the CIC Trophy games, Air Force battling Army and Navy. The other two were Boise State opening against South Florida and Colorado State taking on Texas-San Antonio. Last season, all of those games ended in losses for the Mountain West teams, which is extremely disappointing. They have now lost head-to-head matchups to the American two seasons in a row.
The American's top tier enjoyed a successful season and has been seen as a top-heavy conference for years, with this year being no different. Memphis led the way with a 12-2 record (good for a winning percentage of .857). Behind them was Navy at 11-2 (.846), and Tulane at 11-3 (.786). The three-team average ends up being a .829 score for the American. On the other side of things, UNLV was the top Mountain West team with a 10-4 record (.714 winning percentage). Then, New Mexico, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Hawaii all finished with identical 9-4 records (.692). Taking the three-team average, and it comes out to a .699 winning percentage, which is a drop from 2025. Unfortunately for the Mountain West, even a good season and a top-heavy bunch of teams, the conference couldn't measure up to the American, which takes this one once again.
Playing games against Power 4 teams is usually a great measuring stick for any mid-major conference. The Mountain West continues to have a poor showing in this category, but improved in 2025, going 4-12 in 2025. That is an increase of one win from 2024, though they played four fewer games this past season. The wins over Stanford, Cal, and UCLA (twice) represent a 25% winning percentage for the conference.
The American ended up improving as well, going from 1-14 to 6-13, which amounts to a 32% winning percentage. The additional five games against P4 teams should be noted as well. Beating Northwestern, Army, and Oklahoma State last year may not mean much, but wins over Florida, Duke, and Arkansas look impressive to varying degrees. It's nice to see both conferences improve, but the American takes this category back in 2025.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia university missed opportunities to learn of a student's terrorism-related conviction before the man opened fire in an ROTC class in March, injuring two students and killing an Army veteran who fought back with "extraordinary heroism," an investigative report released Tuesday found.
The federal probation officer working with Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, who spent eight years in prison for attempting to aid the Islamic State, did not share Jalloh's criminal background with Old Dominion University, despite the serious nature of the offense, according to the report, which was produced by the law firm Cooley on behalf of the university.
Jalloh, who also died in the March attack, had attended the public university in Norfolk beginning in 2007, was suspended in 2010 and reenrolled after his early release from prison in December 2024. He was readmitted to the school in May last year.
No federal or state law enforcement agency reported his prior conviction either, the report said.
State law prohibits the university from inquiring about student criminal history before admission or readmission, according to the report. The university could have asked readmitted students to voluntarily disclose their criminal history but did not at the time, the report said.

Now, we officially know who La Familia will face off against, and it's an old friend that UK has a ton of history with: The Kansas Jayhawks (JHX Hoops).
JHX Hoops took down the defending champs from Wichita State, also known as the AfterShocks, on Monday night, 64-59, with a big-time 3-pointer as the dagger by former Wooden Award winner Frank Mason III.
Zeke Mayo (Kansas 2024-25), who transferred in from South Dakota State, where he had quite the collegiate career before making his way to Lawrence. In the game versus the AfterShocks on Monday, he led JHX Hoops in scoring with 25 of his own.
Kentucky and Kansas have a ton of history in college basketball, facing off a grand total of 36 times, with the Cats coming out victorious in 24 of those games. So now it's only right that the two face off in another level of basketball in The Basketball Tournament.
Wednesday's matchup will decide which TBT team will be the champion of the Alumni bracket and ultimately face off against the Non-Alumni bracket champion for $2 million.

The game against York was a perfect start to the 2026/2027 season. Class weather, a regiment of the red and white army and a strong display on the pitch. As one of the many that travelled, it turned out to be a great day and really got me looking forward to the games to come.
Despite being on the wrong end of the result during our clash with Liverpool, there were still lots of positives to take and it didn't dampen my mood.
In fairness, that was mainly due to the magnificence of Enzo Le Fée. Is it possible to be addicted to watching a footballer play? If so, I think I am. How on earth did we have him in the Championship?
Seeing the Lads in action just brings me so much joy — as I am sure it does to us all, and I simply can't wait for the start of the season and especially the first home game against Fulham. Hopefully some more bright sunshine, seeing some new signings in action and the Stadium of Light in full voice.
After knee surgery in April, I missed out on attending the last few games of the 2025/2026 season.

Nebraska baseball earned a spot in the 2027 Battle at the Ballpark next season. The Huskers are one of four teams to play, including Air Force, Army West Point and Notre Dame.
The three-day tournament will be hosted by the San Antonio Missions, the San Diego Padres' Double-A affiliate at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium on Feb. 26-28, 2027. The tournament will have two games per day, with each team playing each other in a round-robin format.
Nebraska finished last season 43-17, leading to it hosting an NCAA Regional. The Huskers are the only team in the Battle at the Ballpark lineup that reached the NCAA tournament. Notre Dame earned a 31-22 record last season but missed the NCAA tournament after falling in the second round of the ACC tournament. Army finished 28-20 and fell in the Patriot League Baseball Championships. Air Force finished 27-28 and finished 2-2 in the Mountain West tournament.

BEIRUT (AP) — Kozo Okamoto, the ***** anese militant who took part in a deadly attack on Tel Aviv's airport more than five decades ago, died Thursday in Beirut, the Palestinian group that had been protecting him said. He was 78.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a faction that is the second-largest group in the Palestine Liberation Organization, said that Okamoto had been ill for a long time.
Okamoto, who made rare public appearances since he settled in Lebanon after being released from Israel, was known within the PFLP as Ahmad al-Yabani, or Ahmad the ***** anese.
The PFLP said in its statement that Okamoto's journey was "marked by immense sacrifices spanning for decades on the battlefields of struggle in support of the Palestinian cause." The Palestinian group added that Okamoto "never compromised nor faltered but remained steadfast to his principles."
Okamoto had served 12 years in an Israeli lockup for a May 30, 1972 attack on the international airport outside Tel Aviv that was thought to be carried out by members of the ***** anese Red Army guerrilla group in a joint operation with the PFLP.

Jeff Monken heads into Army football preseason camp feeling pretty good.
"I like our team,'' he said during a Friday press conference at the American Conference football media days in St. Petersburg, Florida. "We've got some positions where certainly we have more experience than others. We've got a relatively inexperienced defense, but that's college football, and at Army we can't sign them to a new contract … we do have graduation. We lost some good players to graduation but really excited about the guys we have coming back.''
Though the American did not produce a preseason poll, nor a preseason all-star team, the Black Knights have been well-represented on the preseason lists produced by national college football magazines, garnering nine selections from Athlon Magazine and 10 from Phil Steele Magazine. As for polls, Steele has Army finishing fifth, Athlon and Lindy's Magazine has Army in fourth and The Sporting News has Army seventh.
Army opens preseason practice on Aug. 5, four weeks ahead of the Sept. 5 opener with visiting Bryant. Monken heads into his 13th season at West Point, coming off a 7-6 campaign, a 4-4 mark in the American and a Fenway Bowl win over Connecticut.

WASHINGTON, July 22 (Reuters) - From too many zeros to too few, and even the letter 'O' typed in its place, the new systems at the Pentagon have uncovered a trail of mistakes as the Defense Department pursues its first clean audit.
After years of work, the ‌Pentagon is on track to pass its first-ever financial audit in 2028, the U.S. Army's top financial officer told Reuters, a breakthrough for an ‌agency that manages nearly $1 trillion a year but has never been able to fully account for its spending.
Since 2018, the Pentagon has undergone annual audits ***** sing how it tracks weapons, property and personnel across its global operations. The audit was congressionally mandated in a bill passed in 1990, but department-wide audits began in 2018 after delays and reprieves.
Repeated failures have revealed gaps in the department's financial systems, making it difficult to trace government funds from the time they are allocated until they are spent.

FARNBOROUGH, England, July 20 (Reuters) - Lockheed Martin announced a lower-cost Patriot interceptor on Monday as militaries seek cheaper ways to ‌counter drones and missiles, while defense contractors face competition from startups ‌making low-cost weapons that can be produced at scale.
Lockheed said its new PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector, or ACE, missile would cost less than half as much as its PAC-3 MSE interceptors, which cost roughly $4 million per missile, according to U.S. Army budget documents.
Initial production could start within 36 months, the company said, adding that it ‌plans to develop and ⁠manufacture the weapon with U.S. and European industry partners.
"American and allied warfighters need a solution that is battle-tested and budget-smart," ⁠Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, said in a statement at Britain's Farnborough Airshow.

A Pentagon watchdog report found that in the roughly two years since it was built, an ammunition plant in Mesquite, Texas, has not produced any parts for 155mm artillery rounds, hindering the Army's goal to help backfill stocks of ammunition provided to Ukraine after Russia invaded in 2022.
In a report released Monday, the Defense Department inspector general found that as of March 2026, the plant had not produced any metal projectile parts that met the specifications laid out in the contract and the "the Army's expenditure of $469 million to establish the Mesquite facility could have been used to address other Army or [Department of Defense] priorities."
Over the past four years, the Pentagon depleted its inventory of 155mm artillery by 3.6 million rounds, according to the report. The report does not note how many rounds are in the stockpile.
More than 3 million rounds were given to Ukraine through weapons packages committed by the Biden administration. Roughly 112,000 rounds were used for training and testing, and another 218,000 were sold to other countries.
Based on the consumption in Ukraine and anticipated foreign military sales, the Army in 2024 set a goal to ramp up production of 155mm artillery from 14,000 rounds per month to 100,000 by Oct. 2025 and invested in the Mesquite plant in Texas to help produce specific parts.

There's the Congo's sheer enthusiasm (along with the Statue Guy imitating a beloved former political icon), Norway's Scandinavian rowing thing (except for, y'know, that one guy who held on principle and historical accuracy), and Mexico's bromance with visiting ***** anese fans? Or any fanbase discovering the joys of American food, especially Waffle House?

During the World Cup, Bayern Munich managed to sign two promising players who performed well at the tournament: Moroccan Swiss army knife Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven and German rising star Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Bavarians managed to sign both for below what their former clubs were asking for, yet Bayern president Herbert Hainer maintained a self-imposed rule regarding potential transfers before they were made official.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has "concrete evidence" linking leaders of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to recent war crimes in the Sudanese region of Darfur, the ICC's deputy chief prosecutor says.
Nazhat Shameem Khan told the BBC the ICC had reached a "breakthrough" in its investigation into the massacres of civilians in the cities of el-Fasher and el-Geneina.
"It may take time for justice to develop, to be brought to the court, but we will get there," Khan said, adding that RSF leaders have also been linked to crimes against humanity.
The siege and takeover of el-Fasher marked one of the bloodiest episodes in the ongoing war between the RSF and Sudan's army.
More than 6,000 people were killed in el-Fasher as the RSF seized the city in October last year, the United Nations says, while the paramilitary group is accused of carrying out a similar massacre in el-Geneina.

BANGKOK (AP) — When China launched a ballistic missile into the South Pacific Ocean on Monday, it was a rare test of a nuclear-capable weapons system that drew international rebuke.
Arriving two years after a similar missile launch in international waters in the Pacific, the test by the People's Liberation Army caught the attention of small island nations whose leaders have increasingly urged bigger countries to stop using the vast oceanic region for power struggles. But Beijing's message was largely for just one country, experts say: the United States.
"The most important message is the PLA is becoming a powerful military with a very strong strategic nuclear capability," said Tong Zhao, a senior fellow with the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a think tank.
The test, launched from a nuclear-powered submarine, was a demonstration of the sea-based leg of China's nuclear triad capability, which refers to the ability to have land, sea, and air-based nuclear systems.
Further, it showed that China's military has what is called a second-strike capability, said Dominic Meagher, a research fellow at the Crawford School of Public Policy in Australia. That means even if China was attacked first, it still has the ability to strike back, because the ability to fire could be anywhere, in the ocean or on land.

The University of Hawaii basketball team has secured a commitment from a player with as many tools as a Swiss Army knife.
Alois Leyrolles, a resident of Fribourg, Switzerland, said he made a written pledge to join the Rainbow Warriors this coming season. Finalizing a student visa, Leyrolles is hopeful of participating in the ’Bows’ summer training next week.
“It’s an awesome place,” Leyrolles said of choosing the ’Bows. “What they have to offer on the court and in my development, it was really clear.”
Leyrolles said he received interest from other NCAA schools and European teams.
“It was clear enough I would join (the ’Bows), and I stopped the (recruiting process) with everybody else,” he said. “Even in Europe, too.”

The U.S. Army has placed REalloys at the center of America's drive to rebuild its heavy rare earth supply chain, selecting the company to build and operate the first-ever commercial critical mineral processing operation on a U.S. military installation.
REalloys plans to build a heavy rare earth processing complex at the Tooele Army Depot in Utah capable of refining dysprosium and terbium, two of the most strategically important rare earth elements used in high-temperature permanent magnets for defense systems.
For the first time, commercial critical mineral processing is being integrated directly into America's national security infrastructure. The Tooele platform is expected to support the U.S. Army, the Defense Logistics Agency, the Department of Energy and NASA, placing REalloys at the center of one of the country's most strategically important industrial buildouts.
Commercial development is targeted to begin in 2027, with initial operating capability expected no later than 2028. That urgent timeframe is scheduled to coincide with the January 1, 2027, federal procurement ban on Chinese rare earth materials used in American defense systems.

July 8 (Reuters) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they targeted U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait on Wednesday after the U.S. launched a wave of military strikes on Iran in response to attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
In the latest blow to the fragile ceasefire agreement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it carried out a joint missile and drone operation against key ‌U.S. military sites in Bandar Salman, Bahrain's Fifth Naval District and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, and shot down a U.S. MQ9 drone attempting to interfere in the operation.
Air raid sirens sounded in ‌Bahrain and Kuwait, officials said. The Kuwaiti army said air defences were confronting "hostile" missile and drone attacks.
The U.S. earlier unleashed fresh military strikes and revoked a licence allowing Iran to sell oil in response to attacks on three tankers in the strait.
The U.S. Central Command said more than 60 small boats of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were among the targets hit, in a bid to impose a heavy cost on Iran for strikes on shipping in violation of the ceasefire.

BEIJING/SYDNEY, July 6 (Reuters) - China's military test-fired a missile from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific on Monday, state media reported, drawing criticism and concern from U.S., ***** an, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan.
A People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy submarine launched the missile, carrying a dummy ‌warhead, toward international waters in the Pacific at 12:01 p.m. (0401 GMT), the official Xinhua news agency said.
Xinhua described the launch as a "routine arrangement" of ‌China's annual military training and not directed against any specific country or target. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the launch was conducted "safely, in a standardised and professional manner throughout."
"We hope relevant countries will not over-interpret the matter," she said at a briefing in Beijing.
The U.S. monitored China's test launch from a submarine of an unarmed intercontinental-range ballistic missile that landed in the southern Pacific Ocean, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement.
