Hurricane Isaias, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, is expected to strengthen when it approaches the northern Gulf Coast on Friday, prompting mandatory evacuations, school closures in parts of Florida and the threat of a life-threatening storm surge, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Isaias is forecast to make landfall within the warning area late Friday or early Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, which warned of damaging hurricane-force winds. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Isaias was expected to remain a strong hurricane throughout this period.
It is unclear exactly where Isaias might make landfall. Current models show the center of the storm coming onshore anywhere from eastern Mississippi to the western tip of the Florida Panhandle.
The NWS said residents in portions of the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, some parts of Mississippi, including the south, should "prepare for the possibility of long-duration power outages."
The governors of Florida and Alabama declared states of emergency for dozens of counties. Okaloosa County in Florida announced mandatory evacuations for some coastal areas. "Residents should take this storm seriously and evacuate," the county government said in a news release.

Barry Keoghan has built a career by choosing characters that are rarely easy to understand. The Irish actor can appear vulnerable in one film and deeply unsettling in the next, often bringing an unpredictable quality to his performances. His journey into acting was equally unconventional, beginning far from the traditional routes into the entertainment industry. A difficult childhood in Dublin shaped his early years, while an unexpected opportunity introduced him to acting. Since then, Keoghan has developed into an internationally recognized performer with roles spanning independent dramas, major blockbusters and psychological thrillers.
Born in Dublin, Keoghan experienced considerable instability while growing up. His mother struggled with drug addiction and died when he was young, and he and his brother spent several years in foster care before being raised largely by their grandmother and aunt. Despite his later success, Keoghan has spoken warmly about returning home and immediately slipping back into ordinary family life, joking that celebrity status does not excuse him from making his bed or cleaning up after himself.
His entrance into acting came almost by chance. As a teenager, Keoghan noticed a casting advertisement in a local shop window for the Irish crime film Between the Canals. He responded despite having little professional experience and eventually secured a role. Television work followed, including the Irish drama Love/Hate, helping him develop his craft and attract greater attention.
His international profile grew dramatically in 2017. Keoghan appeared in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk as George Mills, a young civilian caught up in the evacuation of Allied soldiers from France. That same year, he delivered a very different performance opposite Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman in Yorgos Lanthimos's The Killing of a Sacred Deer. As the mysterious Martin, Keoghan demonstrated the unnerving screen presence that would become one of his greatest strengths.
Rather than remaining within one genre, he continued moving between dramatically different projects. He entered the Marvel universe as Druig in Eternals, appeared in The Green Knight and gained major acclaim for Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin. His performance as Dominic Kearney earned him a BAFTA and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Army dentists say war games omit dental emergencies that could strain wartime casualty evacuation.
Broken equipment and limited supplies can hinder field dental training opportunities.
Forward dental teams can treat patients quickly and return them to duty.
A painful toothache or an oral infection might not sound like an injury that could sideline a soldier in combat, but US Army dental leaders warn that in a future conflict, such easily overlooked conditions could take troops out of the fight, consume scarce evacuation capacity, and further stress a strained medical system.
Most of the Army's major exercises don't include dental emergencies in their casualty scenarios, dentists said in a recent professional article, leaving commanders with an incomplete picture of the medical and triage or evacuation demands they could face in large-scale combat.

A multimillion-dollar, oceanfront Malibu home said to be owned by Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage has been threatened by a sizable sinkhole, with officials now cautioning that conditions in the area are "likely to worsen" in the coming days.
As noted in an ***** ociated Press report on Tuesday (Sept. 8), the driveway of the mansion has collapsed, leading to a swiftly remedied gas leak. The damage has been linked to Hurricane Marie, despite it never having made landfall.
As for the Cage connection, the Los Angeles Times, citing real estate records, says the actor is listed as the property's owner. Other reports point to prior coverage of its sale to Cage back in 2024 for more than $10 million.
Tuesday, Malibu's Director of Emergency Services confirmed a local emergency declaration in response to "a large sinkhole." An evacuation order has also been put in motion "for all affected properties," officials said in a press release.

When you're planning a vacation, you probably aren't thinking about worst-case medical scenarios. Travel insurance, if it comes up at all, is often viewed as a way to protect against a canceled flight or lost baggage.
But a serious medical emergency abroad can wreak havoc on your finances. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates an international air ambulance can cost $30,000 to $250,000.
Emergency medical evacuation insurance is designed to protect against that risk. Here's everything you need to know about how this benefit works, what it pays for, and how to choose a plan that actually meets your needs.
Emergency medical evacuation insurance, sometimes called medevac coverage, helps pay for and coordinate transportation if you become seriously ill or injured during a trip.

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian residents of war-battered Gaza fled homes and businesses as Israeli strikes and tank fire killed at least four people Monday, including two children, hospital officials said, a week after a U.S. delegation asked Israel to draw down attacks.
After evacuation warnings by Israel's military, a strike hit a building in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. One family was unable to flee and a 4-year-old child was killed, according to Awda Hospital, where he was taken. His mother and sister were wounded. There was no Israeli military comment.
Israeli strikes hit three other buildings across the territory after residents said they received evacuation warnings. Some people sprinted away, with mothers carrying children, while others moved amid the rubble in wheelchairs or with canes.
Smoke rose over the already devastated landscape.
Israel's military said it carried out strikes in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City and in Deir al-Balah after issuing warnings, targeting what it described as two Hamas weapons storage facilities inside mosques. The military did not provide evidence but said the facilities contained dozens of "Kalashnikov rifles, magazines and additional military equipment."

SHANGHAI, Aug 11 (Reuters) - As meteorologists tracked Typhoon Dolphin's path toward China in recent days, a new generation of artificial intelligence weather models worked alongside traditional forecasting systems, highlighting China's emergence as a leading player in the race to improve weather prediction.
Chinese-developed systems, including Shanghai AI Laboratory-developed Fengwu, Huawei's Pangu and Fudan University's **** i, are among a handful of AI forecasting models that researchers say can generate forecasts much faster than conventional systems while matching or surpassing them on some measures of accuracy.
For decades, weather prediction has relied on numerical models running on supercomputers that simulate atmospheric physics. AI models instead learn patterns from vast archives of historical weather observations and can produce forecasts in a fraction of the time. The technology is increasingly being tested during typhoon season in East Asia, where even small improvements in track forecasts can help authorities better prepare for flooding, organise evacuations and manage potential transport disruptions.
The rise of AI weather forecasting has created a new arena of competition among technology companies, research institutes and meteorological agencies, with China emerging as one of the field's leading players.

TORONTO, Aug 8 (Reuters) - A state of emergency was declared by the district of Summerland, British Columbia, early Saturday as a fast-moving wildfire swept through western Canada, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.
The Bald Range wildfire was burning out of control and had grown to about 5,000 hectares as of early Saturday, after prompting evacuation orders in other regional districts this week. The fire originated about 15 kilometers (9 miles) west of Summerland, according to BC Wildfire Service.
The district of Summerland, which is about 45 kilometers from Kelowna, said it lost power on Saturday due to the impact of the wildfire and issued a boil water notice for residents, saying untreated water had entered the system after the water treatment plant was bypassed due to the wildfire threat.
Summerland has a population of about 12,000, according to a 2021 census.
Several regions in Canada, including Ontario and Quebec, have battled blazes this year as hot, dry weather fueled wildfires in dense forest areas. Canada has received **** istance from Mexico, Australia, France and New Zealand to help fight them.

A man charged with starting one of the wildfires in Spokane, Washington, that have destroyed hundreds of buildings planned the crime for weeks and researched when the weather would be best for igniting it, police said.
Aaron Farinacci expressed that "fire is powerful, beautiful, and that things that go through fire experience a kind of rebirth," Spokane County Detective Michael Drapeau said in a court filing Wednesday, recalling his interview with him.
Farinacci, 37, is charged with starting the Old Trails Fire, one of three fires in the Spokane area that have burned more than 850 homes and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people. He is also charged in connection with two smaller fires ignited in the summer of 2025.
He was scheduled to be arraigned on three first-degree arson charges Thursday, but his lawyer asked for a competency evaluation before he enters a plea. Spokane Superior Court Judge Jeremy Schmidt said he would review that request. He set bond for $2 million, ruling that Farinacci was a risk to community safety, a flight risk and that there was potential for a violent offense.
Defense attorney Colin Charbonneau did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity on Sunday allowed firefighters to make significant gains on the Old Trails and Fairview fires, with the Autumn Lane fire remaining active. Suppression efforts are continuing, authorities said Monday.
A temporary flight restriction has been put in place over the fires, with 26 reported drone incursions in the fire. Authorities warned that such incursions can impact firefighting efforts, with the potential to shut down aerial fire suppression for safety reasons.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Part of a major interstate highway in Oregon was closed Monday due to a wildfire that forced a small town to evacuate, one of dozens of blazes burning across the state.
The Fox Fire forced the closure of Interstate 84 for some 70 miles (113 kilometers) between Baker City and Ontario near the Idaho state line before reopening later in the day, the Oregon Department of Transportation said. I-84 is a key thoroughfare, running from Portland in the west through the Columbia River Gorge and into eastern Oregon before crossing the Snake River eastward through Boise.
The transportation department said the wildfire remains active in the area and that intermittent closures were still possible.
Challenging wildfires have burned across the Western U.S. this summer, following months of dry weather, a record lack of snow in some areas, hot spells and erratic winds. Federal authorities announced Saturday that a fourth firefighter died of his injuries after he and several colleagues were overcome last month by a fast-moving wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border.
The Fox Fire was burning near the Oregon-Idaho state line about 12 miles (19 kilometers) northeast of the small town of Huntington, which was under a Level 3 "Go Now" evacuation order, meaning its roughly 500 residents have been told to leave immediately.

EJEA DE LOS CABALLEROS, Spain, July 17 (Reuters) - Firefighters backed by 30 aircraft struggled on Friday to contain a wildfire in northeastern Spain that has ripped through an area the size of San Francisco, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,000 people, as recent heatwaves left vegetation tinder-dry across much of Europe.
Successive early summer heatwaves, which many scientists blame on human-driven climate change, have pushed temperatures to unprecedented levels in large swathes of the continent, causing water shortages, crop damage, wildfires, and thousands more deaths than normal.
According to the Reuters Climate Monitor, the average high across Western Europe on Friday was forecast to be 27.5 degrees Celsius (81.5 degrees Fahrenheit), which is 4.2 C above the normal high for July 17 from 1961-1990.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fast-spreading blaze prompted evacuation orders Friday afternoon in a sparsely populated area of Los Angeles County.
The brush fire sparked around 1 p.m. under dry and scorching hot conditions in a remote high desert region about 45 miles (72 kilometers) northeast of LA, according to the LA County Fire Department. Temperatures in the area soared to nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).
The fire reached about 2,700 acres (1,092 hectares) by evening, Angeles National Forest officials said on the social media platform X. It's unclear how many buildings are threatened by the blaze.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter at a YMCA in Los Angeles County.
The nearest town to its east is Piñon Hills, a census-designated community of about 7,200 people in San Bernardino County. Parts of the town were under an evacuation warning by Friday evening.

LOS GALLARDOS, Spain, July 10 (Reuters) - As flames approached their homes and the smoke-filled air became choking, panicked residents in rural Andalusian villages around Los Gallardos in southern Spain chose to flee — a decision some paid for with their lives.
With the wildfire racing up the bone-dry mountainsides, residents faced a choice of taking their chance and leaving, or sheltering in place.
Authorities recommended some residents above Los Gallardos evacuate and signalled a safe route, while later it was considered safer for those in the forested hamlet of Bedar to stay where they were given the fire was so close.
"In situations like this, it is essential that we all follow the routes indicated," Antonio Sanz, head of emergencies in the Andalusia region, said. "Unfortunately in this instance a decision was taken to use another route that wasn't the one recommended for evacuation. Looking for another way out via a dry riverbed turned out to be a trap."
As the flames approached, Antonio Rubio, a handyman living in Bedar, said the smoke had made it impossible to shelter in place.

As the flames approached, Antonio Rubio, a handyman living in Bedar, said the smoke had made it impossible to shelter in place.

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) — A wildfire burning southwest of Denver has forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and destroyed more than 160 structures by Friday as erratic winds pushed the blaze across two Colorado counties.
The Aspen Acres fire is one of about 40 uncontained large blazes burning mostly in the West, fueled by months of dry weather and a record lack of snow this past winter in some places.
Fire personnel were scooping water from the Pueblo Reservoir to fight Aspen Acres fire, which expanded overnight by 17 square miles (44 square kilometers) which brought it up to nearly 105 square miles (272 square kilometers) by Friday with zero containment.
All of Colorado City, an unincorporated community of about 2,200, was ordered evacuated as well as the towns of Beulah, Rye and San Isabel, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.
About 50 National Guard soldiers were being sent in Friday to help with staffing checkpoints on roads in Custer and Pueblo counties.

It's worth considering travel insurance if you have high nonrefundable booking costs or plan to travel internationally, where your health insurance won't cover you. However, travel insurance may not be necessary if trip costs are low or refundable, or if you don't need additional coverage apart from your existing health insurance or credit card travel protections.
Learn more: Travel insurance: What it covers, costs, and how to choose the right policy
The more expensive nonrefundable trip costs you have, the greater the risk you take if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for unforeseen reasons. With full coverage travel insurance policies, you're typically covered for various trip cancellation reasons that are out of your control, such as you or a traveling companion becoming seriously ill or getting injured.
Your standard health insurance plan may not cover you if you travel abroad, so it may make sense to look into travel insurance policies with sufficient medical coverage. Also, a travel insurance policy with emergency evacuation and repatriation coverage could cover hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses if you plan to travel to a remote destination or a destination with limited infrastructure.

Edinburgh Airport says it is working to resume normal services after the site was evacuated due to reports of potentially suspicious items.
Police said an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team attended after the discovery was made about 18:50 on Friday and the items were "made safe".
The force said the incident is not being treated as suspicious and the evacuation was a precaution.
The airport reopened in the early hours, but it said there would be "knock-on impacts" and long queues built up, extending outside the terminal building, on Saturday morning.
Most flights are scheduled to take off as expected.

WASHINGTON/BEIRUT/DUBAI, June 9 (Reuters) - Israel struck the historic port city of Tyre in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, killing at least eight people, in an escalation that adds strain to efforts to broker a peace deal to end the wider Middle East war.
On Monday, Israel and Iran halted direct attacks on each other after an appeal by U.S. President Donald Trump, but Tehran warned it would resume hostilities if Israel continued to attack its ally Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The raids were the deadliest on Tyre since fighting erupted in Lebanon in early March, when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in support of Tehran after Israel and the United States began their war against Iran.
Israel had issued an evacuation order for the city earlier on Tuesday. Residents fled and civil defence teams transported elderly residents into temporary shelters, state media reported. The eight victims were killed in a single strike on the city's eastern edge, Lebanon's health ministry said.

Hundreds dead and missing as Southeast Asia faces some of its worst floods in years
The death toll from flooding and landslides on Indonesia's Sumatra island has risen dramatically to 442, officials say.
The total passed 300 earlier on Sunday, with evacuation efforts under way, major roads cut off, and internet and electricity only partially restored.
Monsoons exacerbated by tropical storms have caused some of the worst flooding in years across South East Asia. Hundreds are dead and missing in Malaysia and Thailand as well, with millions affected across the region.
