Five people have died in Louisiana from flesh-eating bacteria infections so far in 2026, state health officials said on August 6.
A total of nine cases of Vibrio vulnificus bacteria have been reported in 2026 in the state, the Louisiana Department of Health reported. All nine patients had underlying health conditions and were hospitalized after wounds had been exposed to seawater, officials said.
Vibrio vulnificus is often called "flesh-eating bacteria" because an infection can eat away at flesh around a wound. Infections can occur when an open wound is exposed to salt water or brackish water, where rivers meet the ocean and fresh water mixes with salt water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Everyone has a celebrity crush, but most of the world can't actually act on those feelings like Jamie Lee Curtis did in 1984. That was when she saw her husband, Christopher Guest, for the first time, coming across a photo of him in the pages of Rolling Stone. Florida health officials confirmed on Thursday that a second person has died in the state from the flesh-eating bacterium Vibrio vulnificus. The second death was reported in Marion County, and the first was reported in Palm Beach County. It marks the second death in the U.S. this year.

The Seattle Seahawks held their seventh of 10 public training camp practices on Wednesday. It was another warm (and, due to the wildfire smoke, hazy) day at team headquarters in Renton, and the VMAC berm was filled to capacity yet again for what was a non-padded practice for the reigning Super Bowl champions. While the pads may not have been there, there was still a lot to take in.
Field Gulls was on-site at VMAC observing what was just about a 2.5-hour long practice. Myself and fellow Field Gulls staff writer and host of The Hawks Eye podcast, Bryce Coutts, filmed a quick reaction video after practice ended (from outside The Pro Shop in Renton, we were in a hurry to get to SoDo!) with our immediate takeaways and ****** ysis. Over a nice and tight five minutes, we discussed how well the defense performed, the Sam Darnold-Rashid Shaheed connection, an interesting name to watch at safety, Nehemiah Pritchett's increased role with the starters, Rylie Mills' versatility, and the work in progress that is a rebuilding running game.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — David Cifaldi and his two hiking companions were crossing Montana's ominous Froze-to-Death Plateau and approaching the top of the state's highest peak when their adventure took a bizarre and dangerous turn: Cifaldi slipped and impaled himself on his trekking pole as he fell.
The 44-inch (112-centimeter) steel-tipped pole passed through the flesh beneath Cifaldi's left arm, missing any vital organs, and protruded from his back. After conferring with his friends — and considering the high cost of a helicopter rescue — Cifaldi knew who would save him: himself.
"I was like, 'We've got to get off this mountain.' And they're both like, 'I don't know about that,'" Cifaldi said of his friends' initial reaction. "I'm pretty confident this is outside my chest wall. 'Tis but a flesh wound."
The 32-year-old nurse, who works in wound care at a hospital in Billings, Montana, did a self-assessment. He was alert. There was little pain or blood. And the pole wasn't moving. The group used a satellite-based communication device, a Garmin inReach, to contact local authorities and inform them of their plan to self-rescue.
Then they started hiking out. They carefully descended from the plateau along an unmarked route, navigating through boulders and snowfields before bushwhacking their way to an established trail.

Recently, Los Angeles Rams legend Aaron Donald was spotted working out at the team's facility in Woodland Hills. The Rams have let Donald use their facility in retirement, with his recent workout being nothing more than a continuation of his post-playing workout regimen. However, the image of Donald gracing the gridiron has many hoping that it reignites the fire to inspire a return to the NFL.
On "Good Morning Football", former NFL safety Donte Whitner spoke about the possibility of Donald coming back, pointing out that while Donald would be welcomed on the field, his presence in the facility could be the key to fixing a massive problem that prevented the team from winning a championship in 2025.
"Think about this: The greatest defender of this generation walks into the building. You know what instantly happens? Everybody's standard rises," Whitner said. "The front office members, the coaching staff, and especially the players, and even if Aaron Donald isn't playing every week – I've heard that he's probably going to play eight games minimum – his presence still matters. The young players can watch how he studies, prepares, communicates, goes about his business. The veterans are reminded what championship-level work looks like, and you know you have a coach. He can talk about greatness all he wants, but when Aaron Donald walks in that building, that's greatness in the flesh. So I think it elevates everybody around you, and it does give you extreme Super Bowl expectancy."

I was personally really sad to see Dennis Cirkin leave this summer. Not only because he’d been with us on our journey to European football, but because whenever he seemed to be looking like he could go to the next level, an injury would find its way to him.
After the 24-year-old finally hung up his wrist brace on Wearside, and with the seemingly imminent departure of Arthur Masuaku, it leaves Reinildo Mandava as the Lads’ only true left-back. That is, barring a Lazarus-esque development from Leo Hjelde or Aji Alese.
Similarly to Xhaka, who I looked at in my prior piece, the Mozambican is the wrong side of 30 and will need rotating to be at his best next season. On the surface, this looks to be the one area of squad planning that has seemingly been neglected since last year’s promotion.
Melker Ellborg seems to be the heir apparent to Roefs. The January additions of Angulo and Ta Bi strengthened our depth on the wings. Should Ghisolfi decide to stop playing hard to get with Geertruida, then we have plenty of options at right-back. I’ve been really impressed with how the recruitment team have been proactive in fleshing out our squad so far.
I’m going to try to do my part for Florent here and discuss some potential options at left-back that could learn from, and cover for, Mandava next year. We’re going to look at this from a numerical point of view, but also try to identify some potential market opportunities if they’re out there.

The answers seem to indicate a common thread: Astros fans have more faith in Hunter Brown to have a dominant 2nd half than they do in Mike Burrows, Tatsuya Imai or Spencer Arrighetti to be even decent the rest of the season.
The poll was fashioned in such a way to flesh this out. Arrighetti leads the team currently with 7 wins, but he has struggled badly for a month. Imai has 5 wins, but it seems every time fans feel they are ready to trust his electric stuff that he suddenly has a complete loss of command and lays an egg. Lambert has 6 wins, has clearly been the most consistent of the pitchers not named Brown, but also has never had his current level of success at the major league level and it seems many fans are simply waiting for the bottom to fall out.
Meanwhile, Brown only has 1 win this season in the 25.1 innings that he has pitched this season.
Yet it was Brown most fans believed will finish the season with the most wins. That is a big indictment on fan sentiment towards an overwhelming majority of the rotation, and underscores the idea that despite the outfield’s offensive meekness, adding an impact starting pitcher at the deadline should be the team’s first order of business.

Break point down against 20-year-old Maya Joint, Williams let out a primal roar as her opponent went long. She obviously still had her trademark champion’s desire – why else would she have gone to the effort of making a comeback after four years away? – but this was it in the flesh. The Centre Court crowd recognised it and erupted with her, spurring her on.
It was not a vintage Williams performance on the scale of some of her greatest triumphs. It was hardly expected to be, at the age of 44, after four years out of the sport. A gripping two-hour and 22-minute fight, a thriller under the Centre Court lights, ended in defeat, 3-6 7-6(6) 3-6.
But the grit and tenacity was there, along with – albeit only at times – the serve, the fizzing returns, the ruthlessness, increasingly apparent as she pulverized Joint’s second serve and put herself on the front foot in the second set. And it will have proved to her, if she had any private doubts about this comeback, that there is fight in the old dog yet.

Over the years, the legend of Luka Vuskovic has grown and grown. His prodigious leap and a physique well beyond his age, combined with two successful loan spells, have only added to the hype. Three years on from his £12m signing, many are ready to kneel before Luka and name him the solution to all our defensive issues without ever having seen him play in the flesh.
