Ohio State coach Ryan Day was in a meeting on Aug. 23 when he heard about an unprecedented player acquisition.
ESPN reported Dae'Quan Wright, a rookie tight end with the Cleveland Browns, had an agreement in place to return to college football at LSU if he cleared waivers in the NFL.
"We are certainly in a different world right now," Day said.

The Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) have agreed to strengthen collaboration on initiatives covering AI training and professional qualification recognition.
Under the expanded collaboration, the ISCA signed a letter of cooperation for a proposed Global AI Fluency Initiative based on its AI Fluency Programme.
Subject to approvals and agreed implementation terms, the two accountancy bodies will provide practical and responsible AI learning to ICAI members and students.
The programme is expected to benefit the ICAI's more than 1.5 million members and students.

USC football enters a pivotal and defining season in the Lincoln Riley era. The 2026 campaign can be reduced to a simple question: "If not now, when?" When will Riley get over the hump, if he ever does? This might be his last chance. The man who likely holds the biggest key to Riley's fate is Gary Patterson, but a very close second - arguably just as important as Patterson if you want to argue the case - is strength coach Trumain Carroll.
We can all appreciate the importance of Trumain Carroll on a general level. Bennie Wylie wasn't good enough as strength coach. USC needed an upgrade at that position on staff. Carroll was Lincoln Riley's answer. Carroll was hired late in the 2025 offseason cycle, so last season could never have been used as a real gauge of how good he really is. The 2026 season will give us a much better answer - maybe not a complete one, but surely a fuller one.
The more specific and urgent way to express how significant this season is for Trumain Carroll is as follows: He gets a chance to implement a strength program so good, so airtight, so successful that it can overturn Lincoln Riley's deserved reputation for coaching and cultivating soft teams which get beaten up by elite opponents. Riley's early success at Oklahoma came from the work of a previous strength coach who served under Bob Stoops, the head coach who hired Riley as offensive coordinator before stepping down and handing Riley the keys to the Sooner program. Riley eventually hired Bennie Wylie to replace that other strength coach. Oklahoma steadily got weaker as Riley's OU tenure continued. Wylie them came to USC and didn't deliver the goods.
Trumain Carroll has a chance to wipe away the Bennie Wylie years and give Riley - and USC - a tough identity it hasn't had for quite some time. That's where Trumain Carroll can make a lasting difference for the Trojans.

There are a lot of differences between college football and the NFL. One difference is the ability to hold joint practices and preseason games, which some college coaches have expressed interest in implementing.
Washington Commanders rookie receiver Antonio Williams can finally play in joint practices and the preseason now that he is in the NFL. So far, he has noticed differences between regular practice with his teammates and joint practices like the one the Commanders had with the Miami Dolphins.
"When your practicing against your own teammates, [it is] a lot different," Williams told Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan recently. "You want to be more safe and cautious. But then when you see a different jersey and a guy you don't know, even in joint practice, it's a little bit different. You don't really have that cautiousness. Just going out there and playing and having more aggressiveness. I would say it's pretty similar to a game except you're not tackling in the practice."
Williams got his first joint practice and preseason home game under his belt last week against the Dolphins. On Saturday, Williams had his first NFL road game against the Detroit Lions. He was impressive, catching two passes for 41 yards.
Washington will have its final joint practice and final preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals handed the NCAA a temporary victory on Friday, issuing a stay of a preliminary injunction that granted athletes from the high school class of 2022 an extra year of eligibility.
The 2-1 decision by the Tenth Circuit came after the NCAA appealed a Colorado federal judge's temporary injunction allowing the 2022 athletes to play under the same rules as players currently in college. In June, the NCAA changed its rules to allow athletes to play five seasons within a five-year eligibility window, provided age requirements are met, but the rule was not applied retroactively.
The NCAA informed schools on Friday that the rules that applied before the Colorado decision were in effect.
The Colorado judge granted the injunction on July 31 in the federal class-action lawsuit filed by Brock Wisne, a Northern Colorado basketball player who said the NCAA violated antitrust law by barring him from playing a fifth season.

DG: I didn't really realize it until it happened as well. So I thought it was just a toe injury. It started off as like a bone bruise at first, like, just kept stubbing my toe in the front of my shoe. And then me thinking it's just a toe, I could just play on it. It just got worse. So I had like some torn ligaments and stuff like that. So I just had to get that reconstructed. But I'm all good now.
It was very frustrating, just because the season I had before, it was really, really good. So I think we could have had a chance of making a run if I didn't get hurt. So that was pretty frustrating. But it's pretty tough just out there playing with nine toes for like half a year. But it's all good, though, because the second half of the year, I had all 10 toes. And I felt really good. I felt like I was getting back to normal. But now, having a full summer, having a full offseason back to 100 percent. It was a mental fog most of the time. Because we're using our toes 24/7. So just out there trying to run on it and play defense, slide, and everything like that. It was pretty tough. Just had to work through it. I get paid to do this stuff. I just wanted to put on my hard hat and go out there and work and do the best I could.

It may seem odd that the sale of the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Lakers would become a flashpoint for Major League Baseball's push for a salary cap, but make no mistake, the league and the MLB Players **** ociation are already teeing it up.
For all the talk by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and other executives in the league about listening to the fans regarding implementing a salary cap, underneath the surface is something tied to it that would massively inflate owner profits: increased franchise valuations. A salary cap, with its floor, ceiling, and other constraints on player contracts, creates cost certainty and therefore improves the value of the franchise itself.
Within the last week, two club sales highlight the differences between MLB and the NBA. Both have details that provide context over some of the talking points that the headline figures provide.
On Monday, MLB's owners unanimously approved the record-setting $3.8 billion sale to the new ownership group of the San Diego Padres, led by incoming control person José E. On August 7, **** ured Guaranty (NYSE:AGO) closed out a first half that pushed several core valuation metrics to record territory. Shareholders' equity, adjusted operating shareholders' equity, and adjusted book value per share all hit new highs at quarter-end, while new business production climbed to $152 million in present value of new business production/PVP for the first six months of 2026, up from $103 million a year earlier. That growth came even as the company kept underwriting through credit exposures that haven't gone away.
US public finance alone generated $106 million of PVP in the first half of 2026, more than the entire company produced in the first half of 2025, while insuring $9.6 billion of new issue par across 423 transactions. Global structured finance PVP more than doubled to $35 million from $15 million a year earlier, helped by fund finance deals that typically mature in a few months to a little over two years, letting the company recycle capital faster than in its longer-duration public finance book. The newer annuity reinsurance platform, **** ured Life Re, launched in January, and management says it remains on track to hit its production and income milestones.
Overseas, the company added deals in the UK, Spain, and France, part of a stated push into Europe and Asia Pacific. Second quarter adjusted operating income rose 22% year-over-year to $55 million, or $1.23 per share, helped by loss expense falling to $4 million from $28 million a year earlier. The company also kept returning cash, repurchasing 554,000 shares for $45 million in the quarter and paying $17 million in dividends, with the quarterly dividend per share now at $0.38.
Not everything moved in a straight line. The Brightline transaction was the biggest driver of economic loss development in the quarter, and management said the toll operator continues to face liquidity pressure even as its revenue grows; the exposure hasn't hurt adjusted operating income yet because expected losses haven't exceeded the deferred premium revenue on the policy, but the company said it is still working with Brightline and its other creditors on a resolution.
Thames Water remained a live issue too, though management reported no material change to its loss expectations in the second quarter, and the company is waiting on a new administration to help implement a solution creditors already negotiated with the UK regulator. The alternative investment book, which has delivered a roughly 12% inception-to-date internal rate of return against a 4.3% three-year average yield on the fixed maturity portfolio, took a step back after a $19 million mark-to-market loss tied to a CLO equity fund investment that reports on a one-quarter lag, a reminder of how much a single position can sway quarterly results.

DUBAI, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Iran will escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and beyond, and launch an attack if the U.S. fails to implement an interim peace deal fully in a matter of weeks, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Monday.
If the U.S. does not meet that deadline and diplomacy fails, Tehran would conduct a "timely and precise" military attack to break the U.S. naval blockade on the Islamic Republic, the official added.

Khalil Poteat, a defensive end transfer from Temple who was recently granted an injunction to play a fifth season, committed to Vanderbilt football for the 2026 season, he announced Aug. 17.
In 2025, Poteat appeared in 10 games, making 29 tackles with two tackles for loss and one sack. He also forced two fumbles.
Poteat, who played at two different junior colleges in 2022 and 2023 before spending the past two seasons at Temple, was one of many players granted injunctions after the NCAA's implementation of the "5-in-5" rule giving everyone five seasons of eligibility. Poteat entered the portal in January, making him eligible to transfer to Vanderbilt.
On the idea of adding a player, coach Clark Lea said Aug. 4: "I had conversations with our coordinators about where our needs are, what we'd be looking for. There's still some things that need to be settled, who's covered in the ruling. … There's a lot of restrictions involved in that so we just have to let that sort, but in the meantime, we can prepare for different approaches depending on what's available to us."

Hardly anything went right for Manchester City yesterday as they were comfortably beaten 3-0 by ***** nal in the FA Community Shield. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard saw Enzo Maresca's side well beaten at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Looking at the match and how it transpired, there is one area of the pitch that City must strengthen before the transfer window closes. That is the midfield. It looks like Manchester City are about to step up the process of fortifying their engine room. It is exactly what must be done to help give Enzo Maresca the midfielders he needs to fully implement his system.
Enzo Maresca started Elliot Anderson, Mateo Kovacic and Phil Foden in midfield yesterday against ***** nal. Anderson made his City debut, Mateo Kovacic played in a role that he isn't ideally suited to and Phil Foden started as the number ten. Manchester City weren't necessarily swamped in midfield by Mikel Arteta's side. What stood out was how disjointed Enzo Maresca's side were and how easy they were to play through in the opening half-hour of the game.
Elliot Anderson was by no means poor in his City debut. He did put himself about in the hour he was on the pitch. Anderson also needs time to grow into life as a Manchester City player. Mateo Kovacic and Phil Foden had moments but overall the necessary quality wasn't there in the engine room for Manchester City. The midfield trio that Maresca opted to start with played like a lineup that had never played together before, and they were. But there is a desperate need for City to add the quality they need to fortify their midfield.

Anderson made his City debut, Mateo Kovacic played in a role that he isn't ideally suited to and Phil Foden started as the number ten. Manchester City weren't necessarily swamped in midfield by Mikel Arteta's side. What stood out was how disjointed Enzo Maresca's side were and how easy they were to play through in the opening half-hour of the game.
Elliot Anderson was by no means poor in his City debut. He did put himself about in the hour he was on the pitch. Anderson also needs time to grow into life as a Manchester City player. Mateo Kovacic and Phil Foden had moments but overall the necessary quality wasn't there in the engine room for Manchester City. Devdutt Padikkal said his maiden Test century against Sri Lanka was the result of two years of hard work and preparation, after the left-hander scored a career-best 167 in the first Test at Galle.
Resuming from an overnight score of 131, Padikkal batted for 230 ***** and hit 15 fours and a six to help India reach 460/9 on a rain-hit second day. The Karnataka batter said he had long prepared himself to make the most of an opportunity at the international level.
"Definitely. I've dreamt of this moment. For the last two years, I've been working really hard to try and make sure that when I get that opportunity, I can do something special like this, and I'm really happy to do that," Padikkal said.
Padikkal played with positive intent against spin, using confident footwork and attacking shots to put pressure back on the bowlers.
"I think we have discussed that at length, especially when you're playing spin, it's important that you have certain plans in your head.
"You cannot go out there and expect to react all the time. It's important that we have a couple of shots in your head that you want to play as soon as you go out there, so that you can put some pressure on the bowler as well. So, I think over the last year or so, we have really worked on trying to find ways in our own strengths that you can really implement to make sure that you put pressure back."
He said clarity and complete commitment to every shot had improved his footwork and confidence.
Padikkal did not stop after reaching his century and converted it into 167. He said staying focused immediately after reaching a milestone was crucial.
"I think honestly, it's just the hunger to score more runs. I just enjoy batting out there, and the moment you get to 100, it's easy to relax and feel that relief. But it's important that for me, the next 20-30 ***** are the really important phase that I try and make sure that I'm completely focused, completely there.
"I think when I get past those first 10 ***** after 100, I think it makes my job a whole lot easier and over the years, I've seen so many cricketers get big runs, get big hundreds, especially back in Karnataka. So just watching them bat makes me want to do the same."
Padikkal expects the Galle pitch to become more challenging over the next few days. After his long innings in humid conditions, however, his celebration plans were simple: "Not really. I think I'm tired, so I'm just going to go back to bed now," he concluded.

Dustin Stoltzfus kept the big upsets rolling at UFC 330.
The second fight of the main card at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia saw Stoltzfus (17-8 MMA, 4-7 UFC) take on Mansur Abdul-Malik in a matchup that oddsmakers gave him very little chance of winning. Abdul-Malik (9-2-1 MMA, 3-2-1 UFC) entered the fight as a -700 favorite. Stoltzfus came through as a big +500 underdog by locking up a submission at 4:25 of Round 2.
Despite Abdul-Malik having a size and range advantage, there were some intense exchanges on the feet in the opening round. Abdul-Malik certainly had his moments, but Stoltzfus refused to let the fight get away from him. Stoltzfus closed the distance and implemented his grappling game with a huge slam to take control of the fight, clearly taking the first frame on the scorecards.
In Round 2, Abdul-Malik appeared to get back on track, but once again, Stoltzfus kept working his way to advantageous positions. Justin Wrobleski was an All-Star this year, but there is about to be no room for him in the Los Angeles Dodgers rotation, despite their implementation of a six-man rotation.
Most teams struggle with using a six-man rotation because it cuts an arm out of the bullpen. That has not been the case for the Dodgers for most of the year because, for one, their starters are elite, and one of them does not count as a pitcher on the roster.
Wrobleski, Tarik Skubal, Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki and Eric Lauer are the Dodgers' current rotation, but Tyler Glasnow is close to returning. Shohei Ohtani is taking steps toward a return as well. Snell, Skubal and Yamamoto are not going anywhere, and Sasaki has been phenomenal after the Dodgers got him a bigger glove and did a deep dive into some of his issues.
When Glasnow and Ohtani are back, Wrobleski and Lauer are the strongest candidates to be ***** ped. Lauer is a no-brainer, as he has experience as a reliever and, despite his success with the Dodgers, is the weakest of the six arms. Wrobleski, however, would be a frontline starter on most teams. Privia Health (NASDAQ:PRVA) just turned in a quarter that checked every box management set for itself, and then raised the bar again for the rest of the year. On the company's August 6 earnings call, CEO Parth Mehrotra and CFO David Mountcastle laid out a business adding doctors, patients, and cash at a pace that has held for nine straight years. The question is whether the market is pricing in the streak continuing.
Privia's numbers move together. Implemented providers grew 10.1% year-over-year to 5,644, adding 109 physicians in the quarter alone, while value-based attributed lives climbed 19.2%. That combination pushed practice collections up 12.4% to $970 million in the second quarter and 13.4% to $1.88 billion for the first half. Adjusted EBITDA rose 29% to $37.4 million, with margin as a share of care margin expanding 310 basis points to 28.3%, a sign the business is getting more profitable as it scales, not just bigger.
In late May, Privia entered New Jersey, its 25th state, through a partnership with the Urology Group of Bergen County covering 25 clinicians. Commercial attributed lives rose 11.7% to 942,000, while CMS Medicare lives jumped 55%. Ohio State football announced new in-stadium changes for home games ahead of the 2026 college football season, including the expansion of its facial recognition check-in software and the option for fans to rent single-game padded seatbacks.
The facial recognition software, called Express Entry, was introduced during the 2025 season as an optional service that allowed students (and some fans in "premium" areas) to skip lines and use dedicated gates with facial scanners to enter.
Ohio State described the 2025 rollout as "successful" and plans to expand Express Entry to certain public gates for the upcoming season. With last year's introduction, Ohio State became the second school in the country to use Express Entry after the University of Florida, which fully implemented the service throughout its stadium in August 2025.
Additionally, Ohio State is renting padded seatbacks, which can be purchased on a single-game basis at A Deck and C Deck rental carts. After purchasing, fans can take the seatback to their ticketed seat and use it throughout the game.
Seat cushions with back supports, zippers or storage slots are listed under Ohio Stadium's "prohibited items" list in the football team's online game day guide. That policy isn't new; seat cushions with back supports have been banned from Ohio Stadium since at least the 2023 season.

Taylor was appointed The Reds' new boss last summer. His arrival brought a very different playing style that has taken time to implement.
When speaking to WSL Full-Time about Liverpool's new identity, midfielder Höbinger hailed Taylor's impact since arriving on Merseyside last summer and she believes that the club are ready to progress this term.
"It's amazing to have him and his **** istant coaches," Höbinger said. "The way they see football and coach football is completely different to everything I've experienced before. They have a great reputation and their style of football is so popular in women's football. Everyone knows him and it's just amazing to learn from him and the other coaches.
"It's impressive how they've transformed us into the possession-based football team that we are now. We've had a year of adapting and a full pre-season and I think you're going to see a very different team to last year."
Höbinger's development under Taylor has been hindered by an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury that she sustained in the early stages of last season. The midfielder says that her role in the team will be different in Liverpool's new playing style but believes that the coaches will really help her thrive.
