Ligue 1 McDonald's, Matchday 3, 05/09/26
OGC Nice secured their second point of the season against a battling Le Mans FC side (1-1). Olivier Pantaloni remains winless, however, after taking over in the summer.
Patrick Videira is credited with creating something special from very little. His side weren't even in the conversation for promotion at the start of last season, having only earned promotion from the National 1 the previous season. There is a clear upward direction of travel; the opposite can be said of Nice. Olivier Pantaloni's arrival was meant to bring fresh momentum, but that isn't easy when the ownership situation remains unchanged.
Club legend Dante was back at the Allianz Riviera, whilst the fans also returned for the first time this season. There was a feeling of yester-season that translated onto the pitch as Le Gym struggled to find any kind of fluency on the ball. Errors were too frequent and punished. There was a let-off when Jean Vercruysse found himself free inside the box. Youssouf Ndayishimiye made himself big and made the block. But it was the Burundi international who was left scrambling following a turnover of possession deep in the Nice half. Ndayishimiye didn't lose it, but he couldn't win it back. Adil Bourabaa danced past him and unleashed an absolute thunderbolt into the far corner of Yehvann Diouf's goal.
The game-state ensured that Nice had much of the ball but Pantaloni's men lacked penetration. Their best chance within the opening 30 minutes came from a set-piece quickly taken by Niels Nkounkou. Jonathan Clauss had all the time to pick out the unmarked Axel Witsel, who couldn't direct his header on target. A let-off for Videira's side.

Reflecting on the performance, Arteta said: "There was a lot to like. Obviously it was a great result, but the manner we started the game, the domination, clarity, understanding and growth in the game was really impressive.

Pre-season can often feel like a series of disconnected exercises, a scatter of flights, sessions and carefully managed minutes, but for Liverpool this weekend carries a little more weight. AS Monaco's visit to Anfield offers Andoni Iraola his first home game as head coach, and with it the first proper glimpse of how his Liverpool may begin to take shape in front of its own support.
There is, of course, little value in chasing definitive conclusions from early August football. Fitness remains the principal concern, rhythm the secondary one. Yet these occasions matter because they establish tone. They hint at standards. They reveal, in fragments, what a coach wants his team to become. Iraola, returning with his squad from a summer tour of the United States, has made clear that this next phase of Liverpool's preparation is about tightening the weave, bringing players together and nudging the season into focus.
Writing ahead of the game, he said: "I hope you all enjoyed a good summer break, and I hope you are all looking forward to Sunday's game as much as we are." It is the language of welcome, but also of invitation. Liverpool's new head coach understands that management at Anfield is never merely technical. It demands emotional fluency, a sense of collective purpose, and an ability to bind team and crowd into a single, coherent force.

The trip to the USA appears to have served more than one purpose. It offered Iraola and his staff a chance to absorb the scale of the club, to encounter supporters in different cities, and to begin imprinting ideas on the training ground. Those details matter. Modern coaching is a process of repetition, but also of persuasion. Before a system can thrive, a squad has to understand its tempo, its distances and its obligations.

Manchester United and PSG meet in a pre-season friendly on Saturday at the Ullevi Stadium.
Manchester United arrive with promising pre-season form under Michael Carrick. After a narrow 1-0 loss to Wrexham in their opening friendly, the Red Devils responded emphatically. They thrashed Rosenborg 5-0 and then claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. Carrick's team have shown attacking fluency and are gaining momentum as several senior internationals return to the squad.
Carrick welcomes back several senior internationals following their World Cup breaks.
New signing Youri Tielemans is expected to make his first official appearance for United, while skipper Bruno Fernandes and full-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have travelled and could play.
Bryan Mbeumo is likely to lead the attack after scoring twice in the 2-1 win against Atletico. But the squad also has significant absences. Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez remain unavailable because of required post-World Cup rest.

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana (83, 108b, 11x4, 1x6), captain Harmanpreet Kaur (58, 121b, 7x4) and seasoned allrounder Deepti Sharma (57, 87b, 7x4) struck resolute fifties as India posted 285 before pacer Kranti Gaud's early breakthrough left England at 21 for one on an engrossing opening day of the historic first-ever women's Test at Lord's.

After opting to bat, India looked set for a much bigger total at 190 for three but suffered a collapse, losing seven wickets for 95 runs.

England dominated the final session, taking the last four wickets for just 11 runs in 42 ***** . Leftarm spinner Sophie Ecclestone (368) finished with three wickets, including the final three, as India were bowled out in 74.5 overs.

India struck back late when pacer Kranti Gaud trapped opener Tammy Beaumont (2), playing the final Test of her career, lbw with a sharp inswinger. Gaud nearly dismissed Heather Knight too, but India declined a review that balltracking later showed would have hit the stumps. Maia Bouchier was unbeaten on 17 and Knight on one at stumps.

Earlier, England made the perfect start. Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer struck inside the opening seven overs, removing Shafali Verma for a duck and Yastika Bhatia (12). Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues (35) rebuilt with a brisk 64run stand before Rodrigues dragged Issy Wong onto her stumps.

Mandhana then combined with Harmanpreet in an 89-run fourthwicket partnership that steadied India after a shaky start. The lefthander played with characteristic fluency, peppering the off-side with elegant drives and also launching Ecclestone for six. However, she fell for 83, edging Wong behind while chasing a wide delivery.

Harmanpreet, under scrutiny after India's group-stage exit at the Women's T20 World Cup, responded with a patient half-century despite battling cramps. Soon after Mandhana's dismissal, she was undone by debutant off-spinner Mady Villiers, who picked up her maiden Test wicket with a delivery that drifted and turned through the gate.

Richa Ghosh (13) failed to make an impact, but Deepti's composed knock and a 46-run stand with Sneh Rana kept India afloat before another collapse ended the innings.

Brief Scores:

India 285 (Mandhana 83, Harmanpreet 58, Sharma 57) lead England 21-1 by 264 runs.

The global sports press is crying out over the first major shock of the 2026 World Cup. The Spanish national team recorded a disappointing goalless draw against a modest but well-organized Cape Verde side, setting off alarm bells and opening the tournament with a worrying lack of cutting edge and sharpness in front of goal.
While Luis de la Fuente’s men lick their wounds and are left with no margin for error, the spotlight immediately shifts to the much-anticipated debuts of the last two world champions, France and Argentina, who take the stage today ready to devour the tournament.
The unexpected 0-0 dominated the national headlines. MARCA leads its front page with a blunt "HUGE FLOP," pointing to the Spanish side’s lack of ideas and freshness against the African wall.
Along similar lines of frustration, Sport highlights a loud "WHAT A LETDOWN!" in yellow letters, noting that the national team lacked fluency and accuracy.
For its part, Mundo Deportivo describes the stumble as a "RED ALERT," while As goes as far as calling it a "HISTORIC DISAPPOINTMENT," emphasizing how 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha frustrated Spain’s attackers.
