Quarterback play is always paramount in modern college football, as opposed to past decades when the running game mattered most in the sport. This is true in the Big Ten. Fernando Mendoza, the starting quarterback for the **** le-winning Indiana Hoosiers last season, was picked No. 1 in this past NFL draft. This upcoming season, the best quarterbacks in college football reside in the Big Ten. Whoever comes out on top in the Big Ten will have a quarterback who proved to be the best in college football.
Here is my ranking of the top five quarterbacks in the Big Ten:
Dante Moore shone last season, and just like last year, he was in conversations for being the best quarterback in college football. Moore threw for 2733 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He is dangerous in the pocket and an underrated athlete. Last year, he made the most of having great weapons and a great run game, helping lead Oregon's prolific offense to a college football playoff berth. This season, he enters with more continuity and a deeper set of weapons at each of the skill positions. I expect Moore to have a big season and end the year off being the undisputed #1 overall pick just like Fernando Mendoza.
Sayin's season last year was incredible, and he was extremely efficient. He had all the resources to be in that position with weapons, Jeremiah Smith, and Carnell Tate, but he still maximized his opportunity as a freshman starter. He ended the year with 3323 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. The connection he has with Jeremiah Smith is already a proven one, and he showed he can run the offense even better than Will Howard did the year prior. However, as expected from most freshmen, under the bright lights, he did fall short in the College Football Playoff vs the Miami Hurricanes and in the Big Ten championship vs the Indiana Hoosiers. Although his season was special, he still has more room to grow. If he takes that next step, the Ohio State Buckeyes will have another national **** le trophy in their case.
Jayden Maiava still does not get the credit he deserves for how good he truly was last season. In his first season as a starting quarterback, he led the Trojans' offense to being a top unit in the country. Lincoln Riley's offense was dangerous and high scoring because of how good and confident Maiava was last season. Maiava threw for 3431 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Maiava is a gun slinger, and he takes a lot of shots, but playing more under control would do wonders for his perception and draft stock. If he can have a similar season, with fewer interceptions and showcase his running ability more, there is reason to believe he can be one of the first quarterbacks taken in this next draft. The success of the Trojans this year falls on Maiava's back, but I am confident he will take a step forward and not back in year 2.

As much of a gauntlet as USC's schedule is, it possesses a glaring omission: Notre Dame.
The news broke last winter that USC and Notre Dame had failed to reach an agreement to play what would be the 97th game in the historic series between the rival programs during the 2026 season. They have faced off in 78 consecutive seasons, excluding the COVID-19-affected campaign.

CHICAGO (AP) — The expectations are not new for Lincoln Riley or Southern Cal. He faced them as a first-time head coach at Oklahoma before arriving at USC, and the Trojans have faced them nearly every year for generations.
Still, in Riley's five years at USC, those expectations have perhaps never been higher than they are this fall. With more than a dozen contributors returning, including star quarterback Jayden Maiava, the country's top-ranked freshman class and a handful of impact transfers, a lot of the pieces that were missing during the first few years of Riley's tenure have now fallen into place, on paper at least.
"It's what it's supposed to feel like here," Riley said Tuesday at Big Ten football media days. "I've said this multiple times: I mean, the only two places that I've been a head coach at were blue-blood schools that have the highest of expectations. Honestly, I've really not known anything different. We're a product of our own experiences. That's been mine.
"Every year, I expect to win. I expect us to win. I expect us to compete for and win championships. That doesn't change. I certainly will give you what has changed: We're more equipped than at any point in the previous few years. That's not a hope or wish, those are facts. There's a lot of facts to back that up."
Riley cited institutional alignment including NIL support and a new $200 million practice facility, the addition of new defensive coordinator and longtime TCU head coach Gary Patterson and the overall depth of talent on the roster among his reasons for optimism that he can get USC back to where it is used to being.

Chicago — Conference realignment has thrown a wrench in many of college football's traditional rivalries. At least one Big Ten coach says he feels a new one brewing with Michigan.
Tuesday at Big Ten Media Days, USC head coach Lincoln Riley said that the past two season's games against Michigan have taken on the air of a rivalry. And though the Wolverines aren't on the schedule this season, he's looking forward to building more history with the Big Ten's traditional teams.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Olympian charged with deliberately damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is seeking access to all of the closed-door testimony that led to his indictment, pointing to "irregularities" in those grand jury proceedings.
In a court filing Monday, David Hearn's attorneys requested an order for the government to turn over a complete transcript of all grand jury proceedings. They also want prosecutors to disclose the legal instructions they gave to grand jurors about the elements of Hearn's alleged crime.
Hearn pleaded not guilty earlier this month to one felony count of property destruction and has a trial scheduled to start Sept. 28 in D.C. Superior Court. The charge, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years upon conviction, accuses Hearn of causing at least $1,000 in damage to the pool.
But his lawyers question whether prosecutors properly presented the grand jury with adequate evidence to support the amount of damage alleged in Hearn's indictment. A National Park Service official testified that the pool already was damaged before Hearn allegedly touched it, couldn't quantify any damage attributable to Hearn and said the same repairs would have been required regardless of his conduct, defense attorneys said.
"The witness's testimony established that the pool had substantial preexisting damage requiring repair before any alleged conduct by Mr. Hearn," his lawyers wrote. "According to the witness, the pool was leaking more than one million gallons of water per week; its expansion joints had exceeded their service life; and the liner already contained a rip."

Hair and makeup artists buzzed around the room. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti will kick off the day with his introductory press conference at 8:45 AM Pacific Time Tuesday. He will be followed by the head coaches from USC, Illinois, Rutgers, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
Lincoln Riley will be the last head coach of the day to speak. His press conference will be at approximately 10:45 AM Pacific Time. Both Riley and Petitti's press conferences will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

MANHATTAN — Folks, it really was a great year in sports, even for those of us who aren't regularly paying attention: The underdog New York Knicks won the NBA Finals, Shohei Ohtani defied baseball physics, and the Olympics introduced the masses to our new national treasure, Alysa Liu.
I spent a soggy, smoky night celebrating it all with some of the tallest and most talented people in the country at the 2026 ESPY Awards, hosted by comedian Marcello Hernández at Lincoln Center.
As someone who observes sports more from a cultural angle than a technical one, I admit I find most of the fun of televised competition to be the emotion and drama of it all (besides the whole "who's going to win" element). I also only learned that "ESPY" stands for "Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly" last night. I still had an amazing time.
Here's what I observed as an in-person attendee at the ESPYs that you might not have picked up during the televised broadcast on ESPN.
When I arrived at the theater for the red carpet, the air was heavy with wildfire smoke and the humidity of an impending deluge. Sure enough, it poured. The nasty summer storm cost everyone about an hour of interview time, but fortunately, I got to spend that time indoors chatting with Yahoo's correspondent for the night: Jazzy, a delightfully brilliant 16-year-old journalist. We spent a while fantasizing about the snacks we wished we had brought, and she recommended I try putting Flamin' Hot Cheetos in the freezer for 15 minutes, which I will be doing next time I anticipate being grumpy and impatient.

Former Nebraska football defensive lineman Elijah Jeudy announced he would be taking a coaching position with Highland Community College. He will serve as the defensive line coach.
Jeudy played at Nebraska from 2023-2025. He came to Lincoln after transferring from Texas A&M. The defender was a reliable piece for the Huskers' defense, as he recorded 39 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick in 36 games. He had 18 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble in 12 starts in 2025.
He also achieved academic milestones during his time in Lincoln. He was named to the All-Big Ten academic team on multiple occasions.
Jeudy was a staple of the defensive line on the field and a hard worker off of it as well. He truly embraced life in Lincoln in every possible way. Now, he will take the next step in his career.

MANHATTAN — Folks, it really was a great year in sports, even for those of us who aren't regularly paying attention: The underdog New York Knicks won the NBA Finals, Shohei Ohtani defied baseball physics, and the Olympics introduced the masses to our new national treasure, Alysa Liu.
I spent a soggy, smoky night celebrating it all with some of the tallest and most talented people in the country at the 2026 ESPY Awards, hosted by comedian Marcello Hernández at Lincoln Center.
As someone who observes sports more from a cultural angle than a technical one, I admit I find most of the fun of televised competition to be the emotion and drama of it all (besides the whole "who's going to win" element). I also only learned that "ESPY" stands for "Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly" last night. I still had an amazing time.
Here's what I observed as an in-person attendee at the ESPYs that you might not have picked up during the televised broadcast on ESPN.
When I arrived at the theater for the red carpet, the air was heavy with wildfire smoke and the humidity of an impending deluge. Sure enough, it poured. The nasty summer storm cost everyone about an hour of interview time, but fortunately, I got to spend that time indoors chatting with Yahoo's correspondent for the night: Jazzy, a delightfully brilliant 16-year-old journalist. We spent a while fantasizing about the snacks we wished we had brought, and she recommended I try putting Flamin' Hot Cheetos in the freezer for 15 minutes, which I will be doing next time I anticipate being grumpy and impatient.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge in the nation's capital has set a trial date in September for a former Olympic canoe racer charged with deliberately damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the site of a troubled multimillion-dollar renovation project championed by President Donald Trump.
D.C. Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman scheduled the Sept. 28 trial date for David Hearn during a hearing on Monday. It was Hearn's second court appearance since a grand jury indicted him on a felony count of property destruction.
Hearn, who pleaded not guilty to the charge on July 9, has asked the court to dismiss the case. In a court filing, his attorneys argued the government has failed to properly preserve important physical evidence from the Reflecting Pool.
At least three other people have been charged in the same court with misdemeanors for allegedly removing pieces of paint from the Reflecting Pool. The felony charge against Hearn, which accuses him of causing at least $1,000 in damage to the pool, carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years upon conviction.
Trump ordered the pool's renovation work ahead of the country's 250th independence celebrations, but the project has been plagued by problems. Trump initially suggested that pool renovations would cost $1.5 million, but the cost of the project has exceeded $16 million.

The 2026 ESPYS will gather notable names from the sports and entertainment world to celebrate the year in sports.
The award show, hosted by ESPN, is an annual event that honors and recognizes some of the recent successes and moments created by the stars in their respective sports.
Comedian and "Saturday Night Live" star Marcello Hernández will host the show at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York.

Everton have stepped up their pursuit of Genoa right-back Brooke Norton-Cuffy. Representatives and intermediaries connected to the Italian side are already locked in fresh talks. Genoa look ready to sell the 22-year-old this summer if someone meets their valuation. They want around €20 million, which pans out at roughly £17 million.
It is a price tag that sits comfortably within the current budget at Goodison Park, and club chiefs view it as a highly realistic target. The player is keen too. A return to the Premier League holds massive appeal, especially with the guarantee of regular top-flight minutes on the table. Settling into the dressing room should be a breeze. He already knows several faces in David Moyes’s squad, having shared pitches with Tyrique George, Tyler Dibling, and Hayden Hackney during his time with the England Under-21s.
Born in Pimlico and polished in the ***** nal academy system, Norton-Cuffy built his reputation the hard way. He ground out dirty minutes in the Championship during loan spells at Lincoln, Rotherham, Coventry, and Millwall. Then Genoa called. Moving to Serie A is usually a daunting leap for a young British defender. He handled it. Last season, Brooke Norton-Cuffy racked up 2,216 minutes across 27 appearances, starting 25 times after making a debut against Atalanta. Two goals and an ***** ist across the campaign showed his attacking intent, even if a couple of red cards and discipline issues showed he still has a bit of rawness.

There are a lot of new faces, but the talent level remains high for the defensive backfield. Daryus Dixson figures to jump into a starting spot at cornerback after playing in all 13 games in 2025. Audavion Collins and Zion Tracy should compete for the other starting spot. It would not surprise me to see them split snaps, and Tracy has experience as a nickel corner if Penn State chooses to run 4-2-5 schemes. The depth is a bit of a question mark, but Terry Smith has plenty of talent to work with.
Two Iowa State transfers- Marcus Neal and Jeremiah Cooper- will fill the void at safety left behind by Zakee Wheatley and King Mack. Neal has received significant NFL Draft attention for 2027 and has All-Big Ten potential after a breakout 2025 season. Cooper is a solid playmaker against the pass, though he is coming off an injury.
With no Ohio State, Oregon, or Indiana on the schedule, Penn State does not face many overwhelming passing offenses this year. USC and Washington should be the toughest tests for the secondary, and one of them is at Beaver Stadium.

Rojas tore his ACL after the Oregon game, and the Nittany Lions immediately gave up 42 points to UCLA the following game. He is a dynamic playmaker against the run and pass and the unquestioned leader of a rebuilt Penn State linebacker corps. There are a lot of questions around Penn State’s front seven, so Rojas’ health will be vital to the success of this defense. If he returns to form, the Nittany Lions should have one of the top linebackers in the conference.

He inherited a UCLA defense that finished No. 87 in total defense in 2022 and elevated them to No. 10 in 2023. Hiring Lynn appears to be a good fit for 2026 Penn State. With new players at all three levels of the defense and roughly half of last season’s production gone, the Nittany Lions need someone who can provide results on defense right away. The schedule is favorable and there are enough veteran players on the roster to make the transition smooth for Lynn.

When the Oklahoma Sooners hired Florida defensive coordinator Bob Stoops to replace former head coach John Blake ahead of the 1999 season, they ushered in a whole new era of success and consistency in Norman. Since then, OU has often enjoyed high-level winning, and they've typically been among the sport's most stable programs.
Stoops got the program back to its old ways, the way things were under Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer back in the day. He retired and handed the keys to Lincoln Riley, who left after just five seasons for USC. Enter Brent Venables, who was Stoops' longtime defensive coordinator and also excelled in that role at Clemson. He's been the head ball coach at OU since the 2022 season.
That means that the Sooners have had just three full-time head coaches since 1999, which is remarkable stability in college football. However, most of the other programs in the SEC can't claim that kind of stability.
