The overlooked clause in James Harden's $97 million Cavaliers agreement originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
James Harden joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in a February trade that sent Darius Garland and a 2026 second-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers. He appeared in 26 regular-season games with Cleveland, averaging 20.5 points, 7.7 ****** ists, and 4.8 rebounds, helping push the team to a 52-30 finish.
With him on the roster last season, the franchise made its first trip to the Eastern Conference Finals since 2018. However, they were swept by the New York Knicks in four games.
Harden is officially locked in to stay in Cleveland for the foreseeable future. The 11-time All-Star has agreed to a new three-year, $97 million contract to return to the franchise, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. It includes a player option for the third year alongside a trade kicker attached to the deal.
The trade kicker in his contract acts as a built-in insurance policy for Harden. If Cleveland ever trades him, his salary immediately jumps by 15%, with the new team forced to pay the difference.

James Harden agreed to a three-year, $97 million contract to remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers, two people close to the situation told The ******* ociated Press on Thursday.
They spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced. It includes a player option for the 2028-29 season as well as a trade kicker.
Harden declined his $42.3 million player option for the upcoming season, but he indicated after the Cavaliers were swept in four games by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals that he would like to return. He also wanted to wait until the Cavaliers were done making a couple moves before his new agreement was in place.
The 36-year-old Harden will be going into his 18th NBA season. He averaged 10.7 points and 1.7 turnovers for the Cavaliers in 26 regular-season games after being acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers for Darius Garland on Feb. 4.
Harden averaged 19.7 points in the postseason, but his turnovers also went up to 4.7 per game, including five or more in 10 of Cleveland's 18 games. He also struggled on defense.

Do you think people have forgotten what you're capable of? Darius Garland: Yeah, for sure. It usually happens like that, especially when you have a couple of injuries. They tend to forget about you. But that's what another 82-game season is for: to go ahead and revamp yourself, show everybody what you're capable of. And show the confidence and the work that I put in this summer, to go out there and just lay it on the line. What do you have to prove? What do you think is that next level? Darius Garland: To be honest with you, I don't think I have to prove anything, brother. Just want to be the best player I can be out there. Try to go win basketball games as much as I can.

What was it like getting traded midseason? Was the transition hard? Darius Garland: The trade was actually pretty easy for me, bro, to be honest with you. Which was crazy; we were already in LA, we had a road trip to LA already, so the transition wasn't too hard, to be honest with you. Mentally, it wasn't a shock, but it was still like a shock. I've been here for seven, seven and a half years, and now just to up and pack my bags like that, it was just like, dang. But it's part of the business. I understand the business side of it. So once I got to LA, I was pretty happy. Got to be in a new city, like a real new revamp. So it was cool. Easy transition, though. Super excited to be there. I was pretty happy. I was coming to a new opportunity just to take on a new challenge. So I was excited about that. — 8/20/2026 HoopsHype
What's it like playing for Ty Lue, and how does his vision fit your game? Darius Garland: It's super cool, because I've actually watched him in 2016. I told him I wanted to play a little bit like Kai [Kyrie Irving] and how he played in 2016 in that Finals run. So actually seeing his vision actually work, so trying to implement it into my game, I think it would be pretty cool. It's going to be pretty interesting how he tries to fit it in. But I'm super excited. We've been talking a lot about the offense this year. I'm super excited to get back over there in LA and just be with the team and be with the guys. — 8/20/2026 HoopsHype

Darius Garland, the Los Angeles Clippers point guard now half a year removed from the midseason trade that ended his seven-plus years in Cleveland, spoke to HoopsHype exclusively at New Balance's 2026 Beantown Elite Experience, his second time working the camp. Garland discussed the toe injury that quietly derailed his season, what Tyronn Lue's vision for him looks like and more.
Darius Garland: It's like a revamp, really. Coming to a bigger city, a bigger market. It's a lot of weight on your shoulders, like really running a team in Los Angeles. It's a great challenge, great responsibility as well. So I'm super happy just to take that on. Got a little snippet of it last year, but to have a full year under my belt, having a training camp, having some time with T-Lue, I'm super excited about this year.
DG: It's super cool, because I've actually watched him in 2016.
DG: I didn't really realize it until it happened as well. So I thought it was just a toe injury. It started off as like a bone bruise at first, like, just kept stubbing my toe in the front of my shoe. And then me thinking it's just a toe, I could just play on it. It just got worse. So I had like some torn ligaments and stuff like that. So I just had to get that reconstructed. But I'm all good now.
It was very frustrating, just because the season I had before, it was really, really good. So I think we could have had a chance of making a run if I didn't get hurt. So that was pretty frustrating. But it's pretty tough just out there playing with nine toes for like half a year. But it's all good, though, because the second half of the year, I had all 10 toes. And I felt really good. I felt like I was getting back to normal. But now, having a full summer, having a full offseason back to 100 percent. It was a mental fog most of the time. Because we're using our toes 24/7. So just out there trying to run on it and play defense, slide, and everything like that. It was pretty tough. Just had to work through it. I get paid to do this stuff. I just wanted to put on my hard hat and go out there and work and do the best I could.

Elaine Paige has admitted she was addicted to sleeping pills during her years on the stage.
The English singer and actor detailed how after a show she would feel "wired" until the early hours and struggled to sleep.
She confessed she relied on sleeping tablets to help her get some rest.
Speaking to The Sunday Times magazine, she shared, "I go to sleep but seem to wake up after four hours. For many years in the theatre I lived on sleeping pills, otherwise you're wired until 2am after a show.
"I called it my Judy Garland syndrome. They're dreadful things to become addicted to, which I was. But since the pandemic I've managed to get off them and will not take one again.
"I say to myself that even if I don't sleep well, I'll be fine the next day," she concluded. "I'm not ready to take afternoon naps yet!"

James Harden's patience is paying off for his latest contract with the Cavaliers originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
After missing out on LeBron James in the offseason, the Cleveland Cavaliers seem focused on building on the foundation of the team that made the Eastern Conference Finals. With Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley locked into long-term deals, extending point guard James Harden seems to be the next step.
Despite his struggles, Harden is still a positive for the Cavaliers, especially as the primary playmaker. He opens up the offense for Donovan Mitchell while providing impressive passes to the big men in Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Now, they have been hard at work on a new contract in Cleveland.
When Darius Garland was struggling with injuries, it was clear that the Cavaliers were struggling to have a good offense. Mitchell did his best to carry the load, but it was clear the Cavs needed reinforcements, so they pulled the trigger on the swap between them and the Los Angeles Clippers.
Harden was a positive for the Cavs because of his leadership and playmaking. Unfortunately, it all ended in a sweep loss to the New York Knicks, which was an eye-opening loss for the Cavs. They wanted to close the gap by shooting for a LeBron return, but that did not happen because he joined the Philadelphia 76ers.

When NBA free agency opened several weeks ago, the Los Angeles Lakers quickly lost LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard and Jaxson Hayes. Once their new-look roster started to take shape, they still had a big hole at one of their starting forward positions, and there was some hope that they would retain forward Rui Hachimura.
However, Hachimura opted to join the Los Angeles Clippers, a team that is clearly on a downward trajectory, instead. The Clippers aren't exactly the faux-contenders they were a few years ago, especially now that star forward Kawhi Leonard is apparently on his way out, pending a trade to the Toronto Raptors, and that Paul George, James Harden and Ivica Zubac are long gone.
But Hachimura, via ClutchPoints, raved about the Clippers organization and said that he's "so happy" to be a member of the team.
"I'm just so happy," Hachimura said. "The Clippers are an amazing organization. Even when talking to other NBA players, they always rave about how great the Clippers organization is. It's truly a player-first team, you know. They take care of their players while having that winning mentality. The Clippers are a young team. A year ago, they were called the oldest team in the league, but they've transitioned to a younger generation especially with Kawhi Leonard getting traded. Joining them right as they build this next generation is huge for me, and I'm incredibly excited."
The Clippers are now built around Darius Garland, whom they acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers for Harden, and rookie Keaton Wagler, who was the No. 5 pick in June's draft. They may miss the playoffs again this coming season, but Hachimura also cited a couple of other reasons for choosing them.

Jacksonville's Garrett Scantling captured the decathlon at the USA Track & Field Toyota Outdoor Championships, returning to the top of the grueling 10-event test of all-around athletic prowess for the first time in four years.
Scantling, a graduate of Episcopal High School (now Episcopal School of Jacksonville), recorded 8,526 total points over two days of competition at Icahn Stadium in New York.
He finished 95 clear of runner-up Kyle Garland, the world bronze medalist in 2025. Hakim McMorris came in third, 214 behind Scantling.
Consistency made the difference for Scantling, who placed sixth or higher in the first nine events, including first-place finishes in the long jump, shot put, 110-meter hurdles and javelin throw. Despite losing some ground in the final laps of the deciding 1,500-meter run, traditionally his weakest event, Scantling still found enough in the tank to run a ninth-place 4:43.78 and preserve his overall position atop the standings.
The July 24 triumph for Scantling, now 33, marks a milestone in his comeback to the sport.

Red carpet fashion is always a showcase of personal style, where bold risks can become unforgettable triumphs or occasional missteps. Recent premieres for The Invite and the live-action Moana offered plenty of standout looks, with celebrities embracing everything from elegant couture to contemporary tailoring. Together, these appearances highlighted how fashion continues to play a central role in promoting major film releases while allowing stars to express their individuality.
At the premiere of The Invite, Penélope Cruz brought timeless elegance to the red carpet in a custom pale blue Chanel gown. The soft color and refined silhouette created a fresh, sophisticated appearance that perfectly suited the occasion. Rashida Jones demonstrated that sharp tailoring can be just as glamorous as an evening dress, wearing a black double-breasted Chloé suit accented by a sailor-inspired lace collar. Meanwhile, Olivia Wilde embraced dramatic styling in a striking black Saint Laurent gown featuring a cropped twisted bodice, oversized sleeves, and vibrant emerald earrings that added a welcome burst of color.
The global press tour for the live-action Moana showcased an equally impressive range of fashion. In Shanghai, Dwayne Johnson made a confident statement in a white Dzojchen suit with a modern wrap jacket, completing the look with white-rimmed glasses and traditional Polynesian garlands that celebrated the film's cultural roots. Co-star Catherine Laga'aia embraced playful elegance during the daytime events in a lavender crop top and flowing skirt before changing into a dreamy Teresa Helbig couture gown for the evening premiere. Inspired by the beauty of water, the design featured delicate botanical details and a soft, flowing silhouette that echoed the spirit of Disney's Moana.
As the promotional tour continued to London, Johnson stayed true to his signature style with another crisp white ensemble, pairing an open-collar shirt with matching trousers and a floral garland. Laga'aia complemented the event with a coordinated LoveShackFancy outfit featuring floral embroidery and a tiered maxi skirt that captured a cheerful, youthful energy. Their consistent styling throughout the tour reinforced the vibrant and adventurous atmosphere surrounding the film.
Another memorable appearance came from Millie Bobby Brown, who wore a romantic custom Galia Lahav gown inspired by a costume featured in the movie. The flowing icy-blue dress included a pleated bodice, delicate bow detail, and elegant skirt, while understated accessories and soft styling allowed the design to remain the centerpiece. Standing beside her husband, Jake Bongiovi, Brown completed a polished and graceful look that perfectly reflected the fantasy-inspired charm of the film, proving once again that thoughtful fashion can become an extension of storytelling itself.

Once again, it’s time to pass judgement prematurely. After all, I would have my basketball writer card revoked were I to not evaluate before the dust has fully settled: that’s why they pay me the modestly-sized bucks, I’m told. So, without further ado, the Winners and Losers of week one of 2026 NBA free agency.
Philadelphia 76ers It must feel strange for Sixers fans to be on the right side of one of these incredibly lopsided, head-scratching transactions. But here we are: Philadelphia may end up as the biggest winners of the week after somehow (!) landing 2026 MVP candidate, 2024 NBA finals MVP and bona fide second-team All-NBA wing Jaylen Brown in exchange for just two first-round picks, two second-rounders and Paul George – whose contract is widely regarded as one of the league’s worst. The 36-year-old, injury-prone former superstar is still owed roughly $110m over the next two seasons. At the time of writing, the Sixers remain in the LeBron James sweepstakes, but even if they strike out, they’re in terrific shape. A George-for-Brown swap gives them far more insurance against the inevitable Joel Embiid absences during the regular season, while adding a battle-tested champion to help shepherd Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe through the postseason and show them what it takes to reach the mountaintop. Additionally, after being unceremoniously dumped on a division rival for the basketball equivalent of a bag of chips, Brown will arrive about as motivated as possible heading into the 2026-27 campaign. Hats off to the Sixers’ brass for pulling off what looks like the biggest heist since Nico Harrison since Nico Harrison was employed.
Los Angeles Clippers Self-awareness is a virtue. The Clippers were going nowhere in a hurry, and as heartening as last season’s late push was, the Kawhi Leonard era had, by any reasonable measure, been an abject failure. The reckoning actually began before the offseason. At the trade deadline, the Clippers cut bait on James Harden, landing the much younger Darius Garland while adding draft capital. They also dealt longtime center Ivica Zubac for a package that ultimately yielded fifth overall pick Keaton Wagler. The housecleaning continued this summer when they sent Leonard back to his old home in Toronto, receiving a respectable haul of picks along with two intriguing younger pieces in Brandon Ingram and Gradey ****** . They even poached three-point sniper Rui Hachimura from the neighboring rival Lakers. In all likelihood, the Clippers won’t be very good next season. But now, what was once an empty cupboard of future ****** ets has been restocked, the foundations of a genuine rebuild are finally in place, and, a year after watching former Clipper-turned-trade-chip Shai Gilgeous-Alexander lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy, the franchise can at last start moving forward. That is, until tree-planting-gate is fully adjudicated.

Catherine Laga'aia, Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson brought a touch of the Pacific to the launch of the Moana Experience at Potters Fields Park in London on Tuesday, celebrating Disney's latest immersive attraction against the backdrop of Tower Bridge.
As the new face of Moana, Catherine Laga'aia continues to find the sweet spot between honouring the film and expressing her own style.
Wearing a LoveShackFancy Vessia embroidered top with the coordinating Celesa embroidered mesh tiered maxi skirt, she looked as though she had stepped straight from a tropical island. The airy layers, delicate embroidery and soft ivory palette captured the spirit of Moana in a way that felt authentic rather than thematic.
Around her neck, Catherine wore a floral lei, a traditional Polynesian garland presented as a gesture of welcome, affection and celebration. More than simply a colourful accessory, it reinforced the cultural heritage at the heart of the film and made the moment feel even more meaningful.

The Los Angeles Clippers are entering a key offseason.
On paper, they seem to want to get younger. They already traded away James Harden for Darius Garland during the season. Kawhi Leonard is in the rumors now, too. Free agency could provide some options for a solid team with cap ******* e, as well.
The Clippers often spend time as the understudy to the Lakers, and yeah, the Lakers have a lot going on, too.
Don't forget about the Clippers, though. Their moves this offseason could have wide-reaching implications.

Potential Sixers target expected to test free agency originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Philadelphia 76ers are headed into free agency with a few things on their mind, among them is filling out their depth chart. Entering Tuesday night, Philadelphia only has 11 players on their books, with its power forward department lacking, as only Dominick Barlow, Justin Edwards, and Jabari Walker currently occupy that spot. While it sounds like a fairly standard pool, for some of them, it's not their natural position or doesn't best suit their playstyles.
This task could lead the Sixers' new President of Basketball Operations, Mike Gansey, to look towards a familiar place to fill the void: the Cleveland Cavaliers, and more specifically, Dean Wade. Wade was among the players drafted under Gansey's tutelage in Cleveland, and has had a solid career with the Cavaliers thus far, averaging 5,3 points and 3.6 rebounds across his 342 appearances in the NBA.
These numbers might not sound impressive, but given that he's had to share the floor with the likes of Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and other lethal scorers, the rock usually isn't in his hands. Despite Cleveland making an Eastern Conference Finals run, falling short in a series sweep to the eventual league winners, the New York Knicks, it's beginning to appear that Wade isn't entirely set on a return to the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
As reported by Jake Fischer, Wade is set to test the waters of unrestricted free agency, with several playoff teams expected to pursue him in the weeks to come.

June has brought hundreds of commitments. Texas has landed some of the biggest.
Another blue-chip pledge in favor of the Longhorns went public on Saturday as Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centennial four-star cornerback Montre Jackson chose the in-state SEC program over Ole Miss and SMU live on the Rivals YouTube channel.
“Texas separated itself by just being really consistent, just maintaining that relationship with me the entire time,” Jackson told Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman about his decision.
Jackson, the No. 210 recruit and No. 25 corner in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, becomes the eighth blue-chip prospect to commit to head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff this month.
The Texas class now ranks 5th nationally, according to the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. The addition of Jackson vaulted it ahead of Texas Tech and Florida.

The Longhorns are one of the hottest teams on the recruiting trail this summer.
Texas bolstered its top-10 recruiting class with another key piece on Saturday, as four-star cornerback Montre Jackson declared for the Longhorns on the Rivals YouTube Channel.
Texas has been leading the way with the in-state target from Garland (Texas) Lakeview standout since diving into his recruitment headfirst this spring.
The Longhorns check all of the boxes for Jackson.
“Texas just feels like a home away from home,” Jackson told Rivals of his decision. “I just love the city … it reminds me of Dallas.”

A federal judge on Friday rejected former President Joe Biden's attempt to block the Trump administration from releasing to a conservative group the recordings that Biden made with a ghostwriter.
U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich found that the public interest in the material outweighed whatever privacy rights Biden had.
The recordings were obtained by special counsel Robert Hur in the course of his investigation into whether Biden improperly retained classified documents while a senator and vice president. Republicans in Congress demanded them after Hur declined to file charges against the then-president.
Biden's Democratic administration refused to turn over the 2017 recordings and transcripts, leading congressional Republicans to hold his attorney general, Merrick Garland, in contempt.
President Donald Trump's Department of Justice authorized the release of the materials. That led Biden last month to sue to seek to block the release to a staffer at the conservative Heritage Foundation who had formally requested the records.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK - JUNE 06: Golden Tempo with Jose Ortiz up, wins the 158th running of the Belmont Stakes with with Commandment and John Velazquez up finishing second at Saratoga Race Course on June 06, 2026 in Saratoga Springs, New York. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)
The thrilling Belmont Stakes win at Saratoga by Golden Tempo has placed the Kentucky Derby champion firmly atop Thoroughbred racing’s most publicized division. The Triple Crown series for three-year-olds garners more attention than other races, but as the sport builds towards the Breeders’ Cup in late October, there will be plenty of action throughout the summer as others look to take a shot at the horse that became the 13th runner to pull off the Derby-Belmont Double
Entering the Belmont Stakes, Golden Tempo had plenty of doubters. His dream worst-to-first trip in the Kentucky Derby at odds of 23-1 was thought to be a fluke that could not be duplicated against a smaller field. As a deep closer, trainer Cherie DeVaux’s darling was considered as too pace dependent to pull off another victory in a race that lacked early speed.

Breaking from his outside post, that was said to be an obstacle by some, jockey Jose Ortiz calmly guided his mount over to the rail for another ground-saving trip in this mile and a quarter journey. Chasing much softer early fractions (23.96 opening quarter, 48.29 half mile) than he did in the Kentucky Derby, this son of Curlin was at the back, but much closer to the leaders in this nine-horse field. Rolling through traffic into the far turn the pace up front was not factor for a horse and jockey that moved as one. Unleashing his powerful closing kick down the lane, the Tempo turned out to be quite Golden as he flexed to the finish a length and a quarter ahead of a hard-trying Commandment. Cherie Devaux became the second female trainer to win the Belmont Stakes (Jena Antonucci 2023 Arcangelo) as she guided Golden Tempo to his third win in five starts this year and fourth victory in six career outings.

King Charles III has praised the "determination and commitment" of the newly formed King's Gurkha Artillery unit.
The monarch watched as the troops took part in a formation parade at Larkhill Barracks in Wiltshire.
The King was greeted with a 21-gun salute and presented with a large traditional mala flower garland, which was placed around his neck.
The parade celebrated the creation of the Army's first dedicated Gurkha Artillery Unit. King Charles said it showed the "enduring and deeply valued relationship between the United Kingdom and Nepal".
