CHICAGO — The WNBA All-Stars will not play with America-themed patches on their jerseys as part of the celebration of the nation's 250th birthday.
"No, they're not on the jerseys," New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart said Friday at a post-practice media availability at the Obama Presidential Center.
The news comes after a June report from Sportico said the WNBA planned to have its biggest stars wear USA 250 patches during Saturday's All-Star Game at the United Center (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC/Disney+).
Women's National Basketball Players ******* ociation president Nneka Ogwumike, a forward for the L.A. Sparks, said Friday the report prompted the union to discuss the patches with league leadership.
"As players, we did ask about it," Ogwumike said. "I think being in a league where you're able to have that type of conversation with your leadership is important. You're not always in a position to be able to question certain things, and our players own the fact that we have a level of autonomy.

Former Obama White House counsel Kathy Ruemmler said she regrets interacting with the late convicted ******* offender Jeffrey Epstein and believes now it was a mistake, according to opening remarks she delivered to House committee investigators as part of a closed-door interview.
"If I knew then what I know now about who Epstein really was, I never would have accepted an initial meeting with him. It was a mistake to deal with him, and I regret it," Ruemmler said, according to prepared remarks provided to CNN. "But many people ******* ume that given everything we know now about Epstein, everyone who dealt with him before his 2019 indictment must have known everything then. In my case, that ******* umption is completely wrong."
Ruemmler was called to testify voluntarily by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee for a closed-door interview as part of the congressional probe into Epstein after numerous news stories scrutinized her ties to the disgraced financier. Reporting from CNN's KFILE detailed the extent of her relationship with Epstein, including that she was among a small group of advisers to help him ward off legal and reputational risk during the final years of his life.
Ruemmler did not specifically address how she sought to help Epstein protect his reputation in her opening remarks but did say, "even though I wasn't his lawyer, he sought my advice from time to time, as many people do. I was friendly with him in that context, and I dealt with him in my ordinary course — casually, informally, and sometimes irreverently." She also said that Epstein was never her client.

July 14 (Reuters) - The Trump administration was sued on Tuesday by nine environmental groups that said its recent decision to rescind a more than 50-year-old definition of "harm" ‌imperiled wildlife.
In a complaint filed in Seattle federal court, the groups challenged determinations on July ‌10 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service that "maintaining a freestanding definition of 'harm' is unnecessary," and degrading a habitat does not qualify under the Endangered Species Act as an illegal "take" of endangered and threatened wildlife.
Rescinding the definition of harm violates that law's plain language, defies reason, is arbitrary and capricious, and should be overturned, the complaint said.
The Trump administration has scaled back a variety of environmental initiatives and standards, ‌including by reducing government support for clean ⁠energy and repealing an Obama administration-era scientific finding that climate change threatens public health.

NEW YORK, July 8 (Reuters) - Companies offering Obamacare health insurance plans next year are requesting payment rates representing a 14% median increase ‌to premiums over 2026 rates, according to data from health policy research ‌group KFF.
The proposed rate for 2027 represents the second-highest increase since 2018, KFF said. Insurers must submit proposals to regulators by July 15, detailing expected costs and planned price changes ahead of the new year.
When insurance companies asked for a median rate hike of 18% last year, they pointed to an expected greater number of higher-risk, or sicker, patients enrolled ‌in the plans that would ⁠not be offset by less costly healthier enrollees.
Insurers expect the pool of patients with greater medical needs to increase premiums by 4% ⁠next year as healthy members continue to drop coverage in 2027. Wider economic inflation, rising costs of medications and increased consolidation of medical providers are also driving the increase in premiums, KFF said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Middle-income Americans straining to pay for Affordable Care Act health insurance are unlikely to get relief next year, according to a new ****** ysis that shows insurers in the marketplace are proposing a second straight year of double-digit premium hikes.
Across the 77 insurers in the ACA program that have submitted rate filings that are publicly available, the median proposed premium increase for 2027 is 14%, according to Wednesday's ****** ysis from the healthcare research nonprofit KFF. The insurers cited mounting healthcare costs, federal regulatory changes and the recent expiration of pandemic-era enhanced subsidies as the biggest factors driving premiums higher.
The rise in premiums adds to what already was a significant jump in 2026, when the median rate increase was 20%, according to KFF.
While most Americans in Obamacare still qualify for subsidies that protect them from paying the full premiums, middle-class enrollees who don't get those subsidies will face an especially stark increase in costs. That group includes households with incomes at or above 400% of the poverty level — about $63,000 per year for an individual or $129,000 for a family of four.
The rate increases come as federal lawmakers have proposed various policy changes to overhaul the expensive U.S. healthcare system, but no comprehensive legislation has amassed enough support to pass. The higher costs are contributing to Americans' existing worries about overall affordability, a concern that many voters say is front of mind with November's midterm elections looming.

The WNBA will host several All-Star weekend activities at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago later this month, becoming the first professional sports league to christen the newly opened venue.
According to a WNBA news release, several of the All-Star break’s premier events — including media day and team practice — will be held July 24 at the center’s 60,000-square-foot athletic building. The 3-point contest and skills challenge will take place at Wintrust Arena, home of the Sky, in the South Loop area July 24. Although the All-Star Game itself will tip off at the United Center on July 25, the downtown arena where the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks play, the weekend’s marquee events will be held at different locations to bring the WNBA to more fans — and fans-to-be.
“We are thrilled to welcome the WNBA as our first professional sports league hosted at the Obama Presidential Center,” Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation, said in a statement. “At the Center, we believe sports have the power to bring people together and create meaningful opportunities to build the next generation of leaders.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Sunday posted a falsified image of former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, waving before boarding an Air Force One that had been spray-painted with graffiti.
It came months after another racist post by the president that showed the couple as primates in a jungle. That one was deleted after stiff, bipartisan backlash.
The latest image shows the Obamas smiling and waving at the top of stairs alongside a baby blue and white presidential plane with graffiti painted on it that included the Democrat's campaign slogan "Yes We Can," "Obama" and "BLM," short for Black Lives Matter. The post also shows graffiti in Arabic on the plane that says the phrase "alhamdulillah," which means "praise be to God" or "thank God."
The use of graffiti is a coded message to remind people of crime and urban decay and has been used in racist messaging against Black people in the past.
Trump has a yearslong record of intensely personal criticism of the Obamas, and of using incendiary, sometimes racist, rhetoric. That includes everything from feeding the lie that Obama was not born in the United States to crude generalizations about majority-Black countries and posts that have sparked anger on his Truth Social website.

Lotfolah Kaveh Afrasiabi, who, among other things, served as an official adviser to Iran's nuclear negotiation team when talks were underway with former president Barack Obama, is petitioning for class-action status on behalf of up to 91 million "Iranian nationals and/or Iranian-Americans who supported the Iran football national team and who were emotionally scarred by the flagrant discrimination against their beloved team," according to a civil complaint filed June 30 in federal court.
In it, the 68-year-old Afrasiabi takes issue with FIFA's "double standard, hypocrisy and outright discrimination" against the Iranian squad, which was stripped of a game-winning goal last weekend against Egypt following a video review that determined the scoring player had been offside. As a result of the 1-1 tie, Egypt advanced to the tournament's knock-out stage for the first time ever, while Iran was sent home.
Afrasiabi's complaint contends there exists "[c]lear and incontrovertible" proof that FIFA's "VAR" system, or, Video ******* istant Referee, made an "erroneous" decision "deliberately designed to deprive Iran of victory" in the June 26 match. The move to invalidate the goal by centre-back Shoja Khalilzadeh was immediately "slammed by the Fox Sports commentator [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic as a 'theft' requiring FIFA's apology to Iran, in light of the clear evidence that an Egyptian defender was well behind the Iranian players," according to the complaint.
"In effect, Defendants' actions complained of herein convinced the Plaintiffs and others similarly situated that Iran was 'robbed' of victory and the chance for advancing to the knock-off stage of the World Cup, thus creating a traumatic experience of victimization on their part," the complaint states.

Former President Barack Obama blamed a splintered media landscape for the lack of a second Obama-like political figure emerging on the national stage during an interview on Tuesday.

Nike (NKE) needs a slam dunk quarter on Tuesday to begin reversing one of the worst-looking stock charts in all of retail.
The insight: Nike stock is now trading at more than 11-year lows, per Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace data, taking the shares back to a price last seen during the presidency of basketball-loving Barack Obama. The stock is down a startling 36% this year and 43% over the past 12 months.
What's behind the stock move: To prevent further declines, Nike's quarter this week can't look any worse than the one shared three months ago.
The report was littered with red flags as it undergoes a restructuring under CEO Elliott Hill and tougher competition from the likes of Adidas (ADS.DE) and upstarts such as On Holding (ONON).
On top of that, Nike has faced continued pressure on its all-important China business. Sales in China fell 10% from the previous year, with digital sales down 21% and wholesale off by 13%.

As I watched highlights from the recent opening of the Obama Presidential Center, I couldn't help but remember the night I first heard then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) make his pitch to Iowa caucusgoers in 2008.
It was at that moment I understood something truly profound was happening. Obama was charting a new direction in presidential politics. I wanted to be aboard his ship.

One of the more unique aspects of Former President Barack Obama was that he would answer 10 letters from Americans a day. The letters came from around the country and covered just about any topic imaginable. Some of those letters are on display at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago — and in a recent interview, Obama got a video update from one letter writer that prompted an emotional response.

Oil prices remain headline-driven, taking direction from escalation and de-escalation in the U.S-Iran conflict in the near term. The first round of talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland has concluded with positive comments from both sides, and an agreement to push for a final agreement within 60 days. However, there's considerable scepticism about whether more complex issues around nuclear technology and transit through the Strait of Hormuz can be fully resolved in the short timeframe. After all, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) deal in 2015 took ~20 months of formal talks under former U.S. President Barack Obama. Brent crude for August delivery fell 4.79% to trade at $73.39 per barrel at 2.50 pm ET on Wednesday, the lowest settlement price since March 2nd, while the corresponding WTI crude contract was down 4.23% to change hands at $70.11/bbl.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court cleared the way Thursday for the Trump administration to potentially revive an immigration policy once used to turn back migrants seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The justices, in a 6-3 decision, overturned a lower court order blocking the practice that limited the number of people who could apply for asylum each day, first under the Obama administration and then expanded during President Donald Trump's first term.
Advocates said the tactic created a humanitarian crisis as thousands of people settled in unsafe makeshift shelters along ports of entry to await their turn for days or months. The Trump administration said it was necessary to deal with an increase in asylum seekers at the border.
The policy is not in place now, and crowds are much thinner as authorities have imposed other restrictions on asylum seekers. The Department of Homeland Security did not say if it plans to revive it, but applauded the ruling. "This decision opens up an important tool to continue securing our southern border," said James Percival, the agency's general counsel.
The administration argued that metering is a critical tool used by presidents of both parties and should remain available. Federal attorneys say people turned away at the border could come back later, though lines were thousands of people long when the policy was in place before.

“I thought I was giving her a compliment,” he said on "The Ariel Helwani Show," prompting the host to inform him that no one received the remark that way.
“Michelle Obama being a man,” Hokit continued. “It’s like, she knows how to deal with adversity. She knows how to work hard like a man when the times get tough.”
He added: “I thought it was a perfect opportunity to show the world how great this country is with freedom of speech.”
The fighter also emphasized he had no regrets over the comments, noting, “You’ll never hear me backtrack from what I say.”
