Jared Curtis' entry into Vanderbilt football's 35-26 win over Delaware was intended to happen when it did, coach Clark Lea said.
Curtis entered the game for the third drive after Blaze Berlowitz had not completed a pass in his first two drives. Lea said that the third drive was always the intention for when Curtis would enter the game, unless the game situation dictated otherwise.
Berlowitz re-entered the game near the end of the second quarter. He committed a fumble on a run play and then led Vanderbilt to a three-and-out, resulting in boos.
Curtis then played the entire second half.
"We had prescribed that, so that was less a response to the game flow," Lea said. "Obviously we were not able to move the ball offensively early, but he was going to go in third series unless it was situational."

Jared Curtis has entered Vanderbilt football's game against Delaware at FirstBank Stadium.
Curtis entered after Blaze Berlowitz ran the Commodores' first two drives. On those drives, both of which ended in punts, Berlowitz was 0-for-4 passing and did not have a carry. The score was tied, 0-0, with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter.
Curtis was a five-star recruit and the No. 2 quarterback in the class of 2026 who flipped to Vanderbilt from Georgia. He is an in-state product from Nashville Christian School. He battled with Berlowitz for the starting job throughout the preseason, but Berlowitz was selected to start both the first two games.
Coach Clark Lea committed to playing both quarterbacks in the first two contests. Against Austin Peay in the season opener Sept. 5, Curtis went 7-for-9 passing for 60 yards and rushed three times for 22 yards. He did not commit any turnovers and was not sacked.
Berlowitz was 11-for-16 against the Governors for 149 yards and ran 11 times for 47 yards. He also did not commit any turnovers and his lone sack came on a 2-point conversion attempt.

Apple Martin grew up surrounded by Hollywood royalty with mom Gwyneth Paltrow, dad Chris Martin, and grandmother Blythe Danner. But when it comes to her love life, her mother reportedly wanted something very different for her.
The 22-year-old aspiring actress, who is making her acting debut in Nancy Meyers' upcoming film Paris Paramount, has been dating fellow Vanderbilt University grad Moshe Levi for over a year. He's from a "good family that wants to make a difference in the world," according to a Paltrow insider, per the Daily Mail. Besides the young couple's relationship being described as "cute" and "passionate," Levi also has the parent stamp of approval.

After weeks focused on his fledgling career, Keon Johnson caught up with family. The Houston Astros had the 18-year-old infielder and recent draft pick and his family attend Sunday's game at Daikin Park, with Johnson arriving from their minor-league facility in West Palm Beach, Fla., late Saturday.
"It was a pretty surreal moment to finally see them again," Johnson said. "Once I got to see them, it was like pretty much all the weight finally got back off my shoulders again."
The Astros selected Johnson in the third round in the July draft, with the No. 93 overall pick, out of First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, Ga. They signed Johnson, who was committed to play at Vanderbilt, for a reported over-slot $2 million bonus. Slot value for the No. 93 pick this year was $846,900.
A shortstop listed at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Johnson was selected as the Gatorade Georgia high school player of the year as a junior in 2025. Astros director of amateur scouting Cam Pendino deemed him an "unbelievably impressive kid" with an "exciting blend of bat-to-ball and pitch recognition" after the draft.
"We think our hitting instruction can really help unlock the contact quality here," Pendino said in July. "But when you have a guy with a special blend of bat-to-ball and approach - and really specifically bat-to-ball and pitch recognition as an 18-year-old kid with really good actions in the middle of the diamond on the dirt - it's an awesome recipe."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Blaze Berlowitz threw for 149 yards and ran for 45 yards and a touchdown as Vanderbilt beat Austin Peay 28-9 in the Commodores' season opener Saturday night that ended with 2:16 left after lightning near the stadium stopped play.
Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea and Austin Peay coach Jeff Faris huddled with the referees and officials on the field. Then the public announcer said the game was over with the stands mostly emptied before fireworks went off.
Berlowitz made the first start of his career with some of the biggest cheers were reserved for freshman quarterback Jared Curtis, who flipped his commitment from Georgia last December. Curtis made his debut just before halftime and finished up in the fourth quarter after Vanderbilt went up 28-9.
Brock Taylor kicked two field goals, his second from 37 yards putting Vanderbilt ahead to stay at 8-6 in the second quarter. Martel Hight returned a blocked extra point for a 2-point conversion, and Sedrick Alexander ran for 60 yards and an 18-yard TD.
Josiah Broxton returned a rushed punt after a high snap 27 yards for a TD to pad Vanderbilt's lead to start the fourth quarter.

Jared Curtis has entered Vanderbilt football's season opener against Austin Peay on Sept. 5 at FirstBank Stadium.
He entered with 1:32 to go before halftime with the Commodores leading, 15-9, as a loud cheer went up.
Curtis was a 5-star recruit who was the No. 2 quarterback in the class of 2026 who flipped to Vanderbilt from Georgia. He is an in-state product from Nashville Christian School. He battled with returner Blaze Berlowitz for the starting job throughout the preseason, but Berlowitz was tagged to start the opener.
That doesn't mean the competition is over, though. Coach Clark Lea didn't commit to Berlowitz starting any games beyond Austin Peay, saying instead he would decide the starting quarterback on a week-to-week basis as both quarterbacks would play in the opener.
Berlowitz was 8-for-11 passing for 127 yards. He also rushed seven times for 31 yards and a touchdown.

Lakers reportedly trying to trade $48M dud who doesn't fit any longer originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Lakers don't have many trade ******* ets, but they do have a player or two they could still move.
One guy who keeps popping up in trade rumors is Jarred Vanderbilt, an athletic wing who isn't much of an offensive player.
Vanderbilt has never been a great shooter, shooting below 30% in three of his four seasons in Los Angeles. He's also dealt with some injury history throughout his career, playing in 29 games in 2023-24 and 36 in 2024-25.
It's tough to find a perfect trade for the Lakers to make involving him because of the limited ******* ets they have to attach to a trade involving him and his contract.

Vanderbilt football will kick off Clark Lea's sixth season at FirstBank Stadium against Austin Peay.
The Commodores will face the Governors on Sept. 5 (6 p.m. CT, SEC Network+) in a home matchup.
There is plenty of intrigue surrounding Vanderbilt, as Blaze Berlowitz will take the first snaps at quarterback but 5-star freshman Jared Curtis will also play.

The Los Angeles Lakers experienced a major roster overhaul this summer, replacing LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, and Marcus Smart (among others) with Walker Kessler, Collin **** ton, Quentin Grimes, Kevon Looney, and Sandro Mamukelashvili.
Among the losses, however, backup forward Jarred Vanderbilt was not included, setting the stage for his fourth straight full season with the Purple and Gold. As much as the Lakers have tried to trade Vanderbilt, no teams have answered the call, forcing head coach JJ Redick to begrudgingly accept Vando's return for at least some of the 2026-27 campaign.
"The Lakers have been trying to find a taker for Vanderbilt, but no one has been eager to take on his contract," wrote Heavy's Sean Deveney. "It's possible the Lakers will use him in their rotation, much to JJ Redick's chagrin, and attempt to trade him during the season."
Vanderbilt, 27, was on three different teams before being sent to the Lakers in 2023. Known primarily as a wing defender, he seems like the ideal fit on paper for a Lakers team that has struggled to contain perimeter shooters. With a modest career stat line of 5.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.4 **** ists, 1.0 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game on 54.6% shooting from the field, Vanderbilt has never played a huge role on his teams, but he provides a spark off the bench as a 6'8″ athlete with natural defensive instincts.
Unfortunately, Vanderbilt's flaws as a shooter and scorer have kept him on the fringe of JJ Redick's rotation. With an average of 1.5 three-point attempts on 29.3% shooting per game, he failed to fulfill his role as a three-and-d wing, which made him virtually unplayable in the postseason. Without the confidence or ability to stretch the floor, Vanderbilt becomes more of a liability than anything else. If not for injuries, he might have played significantly less throughout the season, revealing just how much the Lakers value his impact.

Should Tennessee football be on upset alert for the season opener against Furman?
Asked to pick a game with potential to rival the iconic upset Appalachian State pulled over then No. 5 Michigan in 2007, ESPN ****** yst Jordan Rodgers said the No. 18 Vols, who are 46.5-point favorites, could find themselves in a closer game than expected against the Paladins (1-0) on Sept. 5 (3:30 p.m., SEC Network+) at Neyland Stadium.
"I don't think any of them are too likely, but if there was one I could maybe sell you that it could get interesting, it'd be Furman at Tennessee," Rodgers, a former quarterback at Vanderbilt, said during a "SportsCenter" segment on Sept. 2
Rodgers' primary concern for Tennessee is freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon and even immensely gifted players can be ****** e to costly mistakes in their debuts.
"You look at Tennessee and they are breaking in a five-star quarterback and he is really talented, Faizon Brandon. But in these games where App State upsets a Michigan, it's not usually that they are more talented. It's that the better team beats themselves," Rodgers said. "And a five-star quarterback could go out there as and 18-year-old and make some mistakes. I think he's going to be really good but in Week 1, he's not going to be the version that he could be in Week 11 or 12."

Fresh off of opening-night losses, Maryland women's volleyball and Arkansas stepped onto Vanderbilt's Memorial gym looking for a quick turnaround on the second day of the SEC/Big Ten Challenge. In a relentless, back-and-forth battle, the Terps prevailed with a 3-1 win.
Both teams treated Wednesday's match as a fresh opportunity to prove themselves. From the opening serve, it was a neck-and-neck battle. That momentum shaped not just the first set but the entirety of the match.
Neither team could create any separation early in what turned into a back-and-forth battle. In the opening set, the Razorbacks edged out Maryland, 26-24, capitalizing on a late set point after trading blows through the extra points.
While Maryland took an early five-point lead in the set, Arkansas clawed back behind a pair of kills from opposite hitter Romani Thurman. That sequence was part of the Razorbacks' four-point run, which allowed them to take a one-point lead, 23-22.
But it was Layla Smith's solo block and an error from Sydney Bryant that allowed Arkansas to pull away and win the first set.

Kalen DeBoer has Alabama football's initial plan for the return game on both punts and kickoffs.
The Crimson Tide coach said Alabama plans to run "a combination of" wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, running back Trae'Shawn Brown, defensive back Dijon Lee Jr. and wide receiver Rico Scott at kickoff and punt return in 2026.
"There's some other guys in our kickoff return that are back there that can rotate in as well, but those are the guys you want to have touching the football," DeBoer said on the SEC Football Coaches Media Teleconference Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Lee had two punt returns for 32 yards in 2025, while Scott had three kickoff returns for 35 yards.
Cole Adams, who transferred to Vanderbilt, was Alabama's leading punt returner in 2025. Lotzeir Brooks was Alabama's leading kickoff returner.

Clark Lea lost his first-ever game at Vanderbilt football to an FCS team, East Tennessee State, five years ago.
Lea hasn't forgotten that. A few players on the team were even still there for that 2021 game.
Since that day, the program has improved a lot. Lea has led the Commodores to two bowl games and has won his season opener in four straight seasons. That includes wins over Virginia Tech to kick off both the 2024 and 2025 season.
Vanderbilt's opening opponent this season, Austin Peay, is an FCS team. Like ETSU, though, the Governors are a well-regarded FCS team that is usually ranked in its division. That game will take place Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. CT at FirstBank Stadium and be televised on SEC Network+.
There's already been a slight concern pop up for Lea. He didn't like the way the team practiced Sept. 1, saying the team lacked attention to detail and let the heat get to it.

The Tennessee ******* ans welcomed five new members to the organization on Monday after waiver claims and signings, and those players should hit the field when the team officially kicks off regular-season practice at Vanderbilt Football Health Center.
These additions will likely also lead to some churning on the practice squad once the waiver process is complete, but those should be familiar faces. With the new additions come new jersey numbers, including one change for a veteran who made the final 53-man roster.
The ******* ans announced that safety Tony Adams would change his number from 38 to 29 for the regular season, and revealed the numbers of the newest additions.
S Terrell Burgess - 38
CB Melvin Smith Jr. - 39

There might not be too many upsets coming up in Week 1, but there will still be plenty of changes when the rankings come out next Sunday. So what will the AP Top 25 Poll look like after the first full weekend of games?
There isn't a new round of rankings after Week 0, so we're taking into account what just happened, including the USC win over Stanford and the Virginia blowout over NC State.
We'll update this after the Week 1 games are played, especially when and if something funky happens. For now, here's our projection for the next AP Top 25.
We're predicting that current No. 19 SMU will be picked off by Florida State, and No. 24 Louisville will lose to Ole Miss.
That means SMU and Louisville are predicted to drop out of the top 25, and we're calling that Florida and Virginia will enter rankings.
There will be a little bit of movement and flipping around based on bigger Week 1 wins, but not much. Almost everyone in the top 25 will be a heavy favorite.
Top Ten Predicted to Also Receive Votes: Florida State, North Carolina, Arizona, South Carolina, Louisville, Illinois, Clemson, SMU, Memphis, Vanderbilt
– CFN Week 1 Rankings 1 to 138

An offensive penalty followed by a sack moved Tennessee State football back to the 20-yard line on fourth down, but still well within reach of kicker Preston Hurless, who had a 47-yarder against Jackson State earlier in the John Merritt Classic at Vanderbilt's FirstBank Stadium on Aug. 29.
Hurless never got the chance to attempt what would have been a 37-yard field goal. Holder Truette Tumey had trouble handling a bad snap by Jaydon Vester, and Hurless was unable to even attempt to kick the ball.
Jackson State (1-0) held on for a 26-24 win in front of a near-capacity crowd of 32,467 in the season opener for both teams.
Second-year TSU coach Reggie Barlow said all three facets in the field goal kicking game failed on the bungled play.
"I think the snap was a little bit low and the holder had a little issue with timing to actually get it down," Barlow said. "And when he got it down, you know, for those kickers once they've got that rhythm before the ball gets placed, it kind of threw off production there."

Every other week, I fly into Nashville for doctoral classes at Vanderbilt University. Most trips begin the same way: I land at BNA, walk through a terminal filled with music and am reminded that Nashville understands the power of place.
After Dolly Parton's death, Tennessee has an opportunity to tell visitors something important about the people this state chooses to honor.
Nashville International Airport should become Dolly Parton International Airport.
The case is larger than music. Parton's songs helped make Tennessee recognizable around the world. But her deepest legacy may be what she did with the success that followed.
She accumulated the kind of fame, wealth and influence few people ever experience. Then she repeatedly turned those resources outward.

ESPN has projected a notable landing spot for Arch Manning in its early look at the 2027 NFL Draft, sending the highly regarded quarterback to the Arizona Cardinals. The prediction comes well before draft season begins, but it adds an intriguing possibility to the growing conversation surrounding the next potential franchise quarterback.
The Cardinals could become an appealing destination if the team enters the 2027 offseason searching for a long-term answer at quarterback. Manning's combination of pedigree, physical tools and high-profile college career has already placed him among the players expected to generate significant attention when he eventually becomes eligible for the draft.

Arizona's potential interest would also depend heavily on how its current roster develops over the next year. Quarterback performance, team success and draft positioning could all influence whether the Cardinals are in position to select Manning or would need to make an aggressive move to acquire a pick near the top of the first round.
The possibility of Manning landing in Arizona also creates an interesting fit from a roster-building perspective. A young quarterback entering an organization with established offensive pieces could have an opportunity to develop within a system designed around his strengths, while the team could build its future around a highly touted passer.

The Tennessee ******* ans had one major complaint after their joint practice with the Chicago Bears on Aug. 27.
"If cheap shots are taken on our guys, that's unacceptable for us," offensive lineman Peter Skoronski said after practice at Vanderbilt Health Football Center. "We're going to be there for our guys when they get hit."
The hit Skoronski referred to was made by safety Xavier Woods on ******* ans receiver Wan'Dale Robinson. On a catch over the middle, Woods made helmet to helmet contact, knocking the ball loose and sending Robinson immediately to the ground.
The hit, which led to Robinson being evaluated for a concussion, would have been dangerous in a regular season game, let alone a practice.
Titans coach Robert Saleh had just one word for it.

Lakers predicted to trade Dalton Knecht for $69M veteran gamble, ex-Luka Doncic teammate originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Lakers are still trying to figure out a lot about their roster, with plenty of new faces expected to take the floor this season. One thing is certain: there will be no LeBron James for the first time in almost a decade.
Another major question is who will start at power forward. LA has options both internally and on the trade market.
"Then, there is the power forward position. This is the last domino among the starting lineup that really does not have full clarity just yet. There are certainly players internally, and even externally, who could fill the vacancy," Lake Show Life's Svyatoslav Rovenchuk wrote.
If the Lakers decide to explore the trade market, they have been willing to shop Dalton Knecht and Jarred Vanderbilt throughout the summer.
