Michael Wright, known for his onscreen roles in "The Five Heartbeats" and "V," has died, according to a family statement shared on social media. He was 70.
The New York-born actor's wife, Susan Wright, confirmed his death in an Instagram post Friday, Aug. 21, writing, "It is with profound sadness and an unimaginable heaviness in my heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Michael Wright."
The family told TMZ in a statement that "The Principal" star died on Aug. 19 after suffering from "heart failure" as well as "complications of a rare degenerative neurological disease called Marchiafava-Bignami."
Throughout his career, Wright appeared in more than 50 film and television projects, most notably his movie roles as Clinton in 1979's "The Wanderers," main villain Victor Duncan in the action-crime flick "The Principal" and Carlyle in 1983's "Streamers," alongside David Alan Grier. Many TV fans will also recall his performance as Elias Taylor in the 1984 sci-fi miniseries "V" or as the poet-inmate Omar White in HBO's "Oz."

Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her strawweight **** le with a largely one-sided but somewhat lackluster outing against Gillian Robertson in the UFC 330 co-main event.
Takedowns and submission attempts ruled the day for Dern as she came close to finishing Robertson a couple of times during the fight but she mostly just maintained control and showed she was the superior grappler. Robertson really didn't produce any offense until the final round and even then she just managed to stay in control on the ground without really damaging Dern.
When it was over the judges scored the fight 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 with Dern getting the unanimous decision victory.
"I'm super happy," Dern said about her win. "My first **** le win I got taken down a lot of times so I've been working on my wrestling. I'm still the champion. I definitely wanted to submit her, that was the goal. I try to get submissions in all my fights. I wish I could do some more damage to set up the submissions."
A striking exchange led to Robertson shooting for a takedown but Dern countered effectively before the strawweights separated again. Dern was very effective with her combinations including a stiff leg kick that kept chipping away at Robertson's base.

When it came time to make her case, Dern did just that. She nearly submitted Robertson with a rear-naked choke in the final minute of Round 1, but the Canadian was saved by the horn.
In Round 2, Dern went back to the well and took Robertson down again. Round 3 consisted of more of the same, with Robertson taking elongated periods of time to get Dern off her – whether it was along the fence or on the canvas.

A new lightweight contender has arrived.
Quillan Salkilld (13-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC) had to eat a punch or two, but mostly tore right through Mateusz Gamrot (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 284 main event at a newly refurbished Meta APEX in Las Vegas. And now that more fans can take in a show like Saturday's, they got a treat out of the gate.
A Salkilld win by submission over a credentialed wrestler and grappler like Gamrot was one of the least likely predicted outcomes in the headliner. The company's dominance in that niche started in 2022 with the H100 GPU, which was built on the Hopper architecture. But in the years since, Nvidia has launched its Blackwell and Blackwell Ultra GPU architectures, the latter of which can deliver up to 50 times better performance than Hopper-based chips in certain configurations.

Last month, RAF announced that Burroughs signed with the promotion and would debut at the RAF 12 event on Aug. 22 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Now, the promotion has confirmed that Burroughs will face off versus UFC Welterweight and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Sean Brady in a catchweight main event.
I'm not an odds maker, but I would expect something like -10,000 would be appropriate here? Barring a freak injury, it's hard to give Brady any chance here. He's a great grappler and has excellent MMA wrestling, but Burroughs is a different animal on the wrestling mat. There might be some concern that Burroughs is 37 years old, but he was wrestling at an elite level just two years ago.
Unless guillotines are suddenly allowed, Brady is in for a rough night.

Nurmagomedov has been persuading Tukhugov to retire, suggestingthat he just continue training to stay in shape. The latter toldRed Corner MMA: "He laughed and was like, 'Why do you need this?'Leave the sport and just train for yourself. He's been persuadingme to retire for a long time."
Nurmagomedov (29-0) retired from mixed martial arts as theundefeated, undisputed UFC lightweight champion in 2020. Despitemultiple attempts by Dana White to bring him out of retirement,"The Eagle" has stood firm on his stance.

Machado Garry is a sizable underdog against former two-division UFC champ Makhachev, but Evans thinks the Irishman's ability to make reads during the fight makes things interesting.
"This is a lot better fight than I initially thought," Evans said on UFC on Paramount+. "We know that Islam has morphed into so much more than being that dominant grappler, right? His striking and his kicks, all the aspects of his game is on another level, but there's something about Ian Garry's game that I feel is hard to get past.
"I feel like one thing that Ian does really well is that he makes adjustments really good on the fly. He's a problem solver, and I feel like that gives a little issue. He's got some sneaky power, he's got some accuracy, he's got some tricky things that he does."

Beatriz Mesquita wants to bring the iconic Brazil-Argentina rivalry to the Octagon.
Mesquita (8-0) took on Melissa Mullins (7-3) in a women’s bantamweight matchup at UFC Fight Night 279 on Saturday in Las Vegas. Mullins rocked Mesquita in the opening round and surprisingly chose to take the fight to the canvas. As Mullins postured up to drop an elbow, “Bia” locked up an armbar to earn a quick tap.
Mesquita subsequently aimed high with a callout of Ailin Perez. Explaining her callout, Mesquita said that he wants to jump up the UFC.com rankings, where Perez is currently at No. 5. The undefeated Brazilian also said that she doesn’t like the attitude of Perez, who is known for celebrating her wins by twerking. Mesquita further believes that it’ll be an interesting matchup against the Argentinian to translate the age old Brazil-Argentina soccer rivalry into the Octagon.
“Honestly, I want to end up in the Top 10, Top 5 by the end of the year,” Mesquita said in an interview with the UFC. “So, [Perez] is there. And I really think it’s a good match for me. I don’t like her attitude in the cage. But more than that, I think she’s a really good match for me. She can grapple too, so I think it’s gonna be a really interesting fight. Also, Brazil and Argentina is a big rivalry.”

“The Wizard” is planning a comeback.
It has been four years and five months since Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) submission ace Ryan Hall — a.k.a. the “master of the 50/50” — has competed inside the Octagon, and for the most part, he has been M.I.A.
Hall has been mentioned by UFC fighters Cory Sandhagen and Chase Hooper, who have gone to train with him over the last couple of years, but other than that, there has been basically nothing.
However, during a rare podcast appearance with Matt Serra, the unique grappler gave an update on where he has been and revealed that he is planning a comeback.
“It’s been a while, man,” Hall said. “I hadn’t really trained in almost three years. I’m still good, but not sharp, if that makes sense. I’m working to get back to it. I had 23 surgeries in three years — that wasn’t great, and some of them were pretty major. And some of them the doctors goofed up, which they had to do again.”
