Semiconductor stocks have been the most crowded corner of the AI trade in 2026. Memory company margins are at records, and chip ETFs have rallied sharply.
The consensus view on Wall Street has been straightforward: As long as the biggest cloud platforms keep spending on AI infrastructure, demand for chips has nowhere to go but up. On June 30, Scott Chronert noticed something that puts a question mark on that ******* umption.
Chronert is Citi's head of U.S. equity strategy and has been among the more bullish voices on equities this year, carrying an 8,100 year-end S&P 500 target above most of his peers.
The note he published on June 30 is not a bearish call on the market. It is a specific observation about a tension building inside the AI trade that semiconductor investors may not have fully priced in yet.
Chronert's characterization of the setup was direct, Seeking Alpha reported. "The tech trade is approaching a pivotal moment as rising semiconductor memory prices are set to clash with hyperscalers' return on investment expectations."

Barclays has increased its year-end target for the S&P 500 to 7,800 from 7,650 and introduced a 2027 target of 8,800, reflecting a more optimistic earnings outlook even as investors face a more challenging market environment in the months ahead.
The bank said the outlook for equities remains mixed, with several competing forces influencing sentiment. "Equities remain choppy as peace talks stop and start, and questions linger around AI spend, funding and monetization, higher for longer rates, and consumer strength," strategists led by Venu Krishna wrote.
According to Barclays, economic conditions continue to support a constructive stance on stocks. Labour market data remain resilient enough to ease recession concerns, although the same strength could delay monetary easing. The team also noted that cost pressures are beginning to build again but have not yet reached levels that would threaten the broader expansion.
Even so, "the balance of risks still leans constructive," the strategists said.
Barclays raised its 2026 earnings-per-share forecast for the S&P 500 to $337 from $321. The estimate remains slightly below the broader market consensus of $341 but implies annual earnings growth of roughly 21% compared with the bank's estimate of $279 for 2025.

(NASDAQ:AMZN) will invest an additional $13 billion in India by 2030, aimed at expanding its AI and cloud infrastructure. The initiative was announced in addition to the company's planned $35 billion funding, which was announced last year, taking its investment in the country to $48 billion through 2030. Reuters further stated that the announcement came after a meeting between Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) CEO Andy Jassy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held in New Delhi on Thursday.
In another development, Reuters reported on June 22 that Amazon.com's (NASDAQ:AMZN) Prime Day, starting on Tuesday, would serve as a "litmus test" to gauge the spending power of U.S. shoppers. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is jumping into the mega-IPO stock-trading race, filing a confidential S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. With **** eX at bat for a Friday opening and Anthropic on deck, OpenAI is in the queue but has not set a date for its debut.
"We have not decided on timing yet; it may be a while because there are things we want to do that are likely easier as a private company," OpenAI said in a statement posted on its website. "But it's a complicated set of trade-offs, and this gives us the option to go public sooner if that ends up being best."
It may feel as if OpenAI burst onto the tech scene overnight, but the company's roots as a nonprofit date back to 2015, when it introduced itself as an artificial intelligence research company. It aimed to "advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return."
Recently valued at roughly $852 billion and potentially seeking a public valuation of $1 trillion or more, a publicly traded OpenAI would likely face pressure from investors to deliver strong financial returns.

Bell Global Equities Fund, managed by Bell **** et Management, released its latest investor update, available for download. March saw heightened volatility due to the Middle East conflict, with the MSCI World ex Australia Index falling 2.5% and the Bell Global Equities Fund (Wholesale class) declining 3.1%. The portfolio’s underweight in Energy was the primary headwind to relative performance, compounded by poor stock selection in Communication Services, Health, and Energy. A tentative ceasefire in early April has helped stabilize sentiment and reverse some March declines. Future market trends depend on the ceasefire’s durability and how ongoing energy supply disruptions affect inflation and growth through 2026. In addition, the ongoing AI disruption narrative is significantly influencing market behavior, causing indiscriminate selling across various sectors. The recent weakness appears to be sentiment-driven rather than fundamental deterioration, thus creating opportunities. In addition, please check the Strategy’s top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its first-quarter 2026 investor letter, Bell Global Equities Fund highlighted stocks such as Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL). Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL) is a less-than-truckload motor carrier that provides regional, inter-regional, and national less-than-truckload services, as well as expedited transportation. On June 5, 2026, Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL) closed at $242.57 per share. One-month return of Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL) was 50.44%, and its shares gained 53.36% over the past 52 weeks. Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL) has a market capitalization of $50.45 billion.
Bell Global Equities Fund stated the following regarding Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL) in its Q1 2026 investor letter:
"Among other exits was the sale of Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL), a leading US less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier. While we continue to see good scope for strong earnings growth in the coming years as earnings rebound from depressed levels, a strong rally in the share price and material valuation re-rating have largely priced this in. With the potential for macro disruptions related to the conflict in Iran, we felt the risk-reward profile was starting to skew to the downside and therefore exited the position."
Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL) is not on our list of 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds Heading Into 2026. According to our database, 51 hedge fund portfolios held Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (NASDAQ:ODFL) at the end of the first quarter, up from 48 in the previous quarter.
