WASHINGTON, Sept 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. asked his new CDC director to remove a reference to two Pennsylvania deaths from the agency's online measles tally after he questioned whether the disease contributed to the fatalities, three sources familiar with the situation said.
Kennedy's request came after CDC staffers had already ‌accepted the state's characterization of the deaths as linked to measles, a Pennsylvania official said.
Despite that, Erica Schwartz, the recently appointed director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ‌agreed with Kennedy's directive and implemented it without objection, said the three sources familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The move followed a heated exchange on social media between Kennedy, a long-time anti-vaccine activist appointed by President Donald Trump, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat. The two officials accused each other of politicizing the outbreak in Pennsylvania, the latest state to grapple with a resurgence of measles since the Trump administration took office.

KYIV, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Ukraine sees a window of opportunity for U.S. mediation to end Russia's war in Ukraine until the end of next summer and has ‌drafted one page of ideas with U.S. and European officials to be presented to ‌Moscow, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.
Zelenskiy said that a ceasefire and a previously discussed U.S. proposal for a free economic zone in Ukraine's eastern Donbas area — to be administered by a third party — were among the ideas in the document.
"It contains one of the ideas for a ceasefire — that is the main point. The second part concerns what the Americans proposed regarding a free economic zone," Zelenskiy told reporters in ‌a weekend briefing.
Zelenskiy said that ⁠he saw a window to end the nearly four-and-a-half years of fighting that stretched from the G20 summit in the U.S. in December this year ⁠until the end of summer 2027, given the looming campaign for the 2028 presidential election in the U.S.
Zelenskiy said earlier this month that Ukraine had handed proposals to U.S. negotiators for a plan to end the war, without providing more detail.

A dog that went missing during a Lake District walk on Helvellyn three weeks ago has been found.
The pet, called Teddy, disappeared on 2 August, promoting a search by volunteers from Keswick Mountain Rescue Team and others.
It was found stuck at Dry Gill on Friday after one of the search party heard barking.
Due to the dangerous location, a mountain rescue team was called to help bring the dog to safety, before it was returned to the "relieved" owner about three hours later and taken to a vet.
"The team are absolutely delighted to share this update, as the news of this missing dog had deeply affected so many people across our local community," a spokesperson said.

Wisconsin democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong, the Democratic primary frontrunner in the race for governor, sidestepped repeated questions from Politico reporter Jonathan Martin Tuesday at Marquette University in Milwaukee about whether she still wants to abolish police after a televised debate in which she pledged to preserve law enforcement funding amid scrutiny of her previous position.
"So, this system is not working," Hong said. "If we want to be serious, we better be putting these billions into things we know prevent crime."
Martin asked whether Hong still wanted to abolish police in the long term. Hong did not answer yes or no, instead calling for "systems of care" and redirecting criminal justice spending before a campaign aide ushered her away.
"I believe that we have to be serious about public safety, and I'm going to be a governor that is more serious than anyone else in making sure that we are building systems of care," Hong said.

But it is a demand that could prove a step too far for voters in an election in September, and potentially ‌bring down Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The prime minister, who once told a Holocaust survivor he would never cooperate with the Sweden Democrats, now says he has lifted those "red lines".
Sweden, the stalwart of European ‌socialism for generations, has undergone a startling rightward shift in policy and public opinion in recent years, especially over immigration in a country where one person in five was born abroad.
The number of asylum seekers last year was down 97% from the peak a decade ago. One of Europe's most welcoming immigration systems has become one of its most stringent: newcomers face employment restrictions, language and culture tests, and reduced welfare payouts. Immigrants who break the law can be swiftly expelled, and others are offered payments to leave voluntarily.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to block Texas from enforcing a state law that requires apps stores to verify users' ages and obtain parental consent for minors seeking to download apps or make in-app purchases on mobile phones.
Justice Samuel Alito, in a pair of one-sentence orders, denied petitions by plaintiffs who claim that the Texas App Store Accountability Act violates users' constitutional rights to free speech.
Last month, a three-judge panel from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the law can take effect. The panel suspended a district court's ruling last December that the law is unconstitutional.
The plaintiffs suing to block the law include the Computer & Communications Industry ***** ociation and Students Engaged in Advancing Texas. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is a defendant in both cases.
Plaintiffs' lawyers argued that the law impermissibly seeks to limit access to content protected by the First Amendment, including news and educational material.

At least 32 people were killed and 16 others injured after an overcrowded passenger bus plunged into a ravine in south-western Pakistan.
The bus was travelling from Quetta to Peshawar, when it crashed in the Dana Sar mountain range, on the border between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, at about 08:00 local time (03:00 GMT) on Friday.
A government official at Zhob Hospital told BBC News that a total of 48 people, including a number of women and children, had been on board when the accident happened.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest a steering fault may have led the driver to lose control before skidding off the mountain range.
Photographs from the scene showed the badly damaged bus following its plunge to the bottom of the ravine.
