On Sunday, we discussed the potential of the 2026 Detroit Lions offense. Almost everyone agrees that it will be a top-10 unit in the NFL this season, and per the poll we ran on this site, 90 percent of our audience believes the Lions will have a top-five offense.
I'm guessing Lions fans will be a little less optimistic about the other side of the ball.
The Lions defense has been an issue for most years under Dan Campbell. While they've been able to add some blue chip players like Aidan Hutchinson, Jack Campbell, Kerby Joseph, and Brian Branch, the unit hasn't been able to put together a full season of strong play. Sometimes, it's been injuries. Other times, it feels like Detroit is being overcoached. Certainly the lack of a pass rush has been culpable at times. Regardless of the reasoning, the defense has regularly let the Lions down.
But could 2026 bring some extra hope? Detroit finally invested in their defensive line, and the players along that front are entering training camp healthier than ever. Additionally, Detroit has fortified their depth at linebacker and safety. And young players like Tyleik Williams, Jack Campbell, and Ennis Rakestraw could elevate their games and jump in their development.
That said, there are huge questions about health and starters in the secondary, and Detroit still needs to show they can account and adjust to the losses of DJ Reader, Roy Lopez, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Alex Anzalone, and Amik Robertson. And defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard has a lot to prove in his second season at that position.

Liverpool's first pre-season outing of the summer was already going to carry curiosity, because a new head coach always brings questions, fresh ideas and a sense of reset. Yet Saturday's meeting with Sunderland now carries something far more important. As reported by BBC Sport, both clubs will honour Kevin Keegan with black armbands and a minute's applause before kick-off.
That feels fitting. Keegan belonged to an era when footballers seemed larger than life, full of energy, swagger and personality, and he left a mark on every club lucky enough to call him their own. He died this week at the age of 75, months after it was announced that he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer. For many supporters, particularly those of a certain vintage, the news landed with real force.
At Liverpool, Keegan was central to one of the club's great periods of growth. Nearly 750 club appearances came across his wider career, but the six years on Merseyside remain a huge part of why he is remembered with such affection. Three league ****** les, the European Cup, two UEFA Cups and the FA Cup tell their own story. So do the Ballon d'Or wins in 1978 and 1979, achieved while he was with Hamburg, proof that his standing stretched well beyond English football.
He was a footballer who played with urgency and emotion, and those are qualities supporters always respond to. Trophies matter, of course, but connection matters too. Keegan had both.
This match also opens the Andoni Iraola chapter. After the collapse of last season and the end of Arne Slot's reign in May, Liverpool head into 2026-27 needing clarity and momentum. Iraola's first game arrives with notable absentees after Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate departed at the end of last term.

The amount of young talent in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization is filling up quickly. CapWages has 21 players on Pittsburgh’s reserve list for unsigned drafted players and the team has 22 others under contract that will be playing in the pro ranks next season. Once upon a time, finding 25 players to even rank was a tall task, now there are some decent enough names that won’t draw a mention at all for this year’s list considering that there are over 40 options between signed players and the reserve list. Today hopes to appease that with an honorable mention of five players on the cusp of making the list, all of whom show the potential to be ranked next year with favorable upcoming seasons.
Earlier in the week we kicked off Top 25 Under 25 season by looking at the players that won’t be a part of this year’s list due to aging out, being traded or otherwise leaving the organization. As a loose rule, we’re saying for now that 2019 draftees like Elmer Soderblom (who turned 25 earlier this summer) and Nick Robertson (who has his 25th birthday in September) are ineligible this year. 2020 draftees that are under the age of 25 currently, like Hendrix Lapierre and Joel Blomqvist meet the cut-off as fair game this year.
The top 25 under 25 series was a staple within the SBN Hockey blogs a decade ago, around here it’s morphed into what I like to think about as a snapshot in time for value and importance within the organization. It’s not meant to be purely predictive of which player may be the best pro in three, five or seven years but show how the young players currently stack up against one another.
In many ways it’s an impossible task, and a very subjective one. How does one weigh a 24-year old that figures to have a short leash at making an NHL impact (like a Phil Tomasino or Sam Poulin last year) against a fresh-faced 18 year old that was just drafted and doesn’t figure to turn pro for several years? Not to mention everything in between. It’s certainly a balancing act where guaranteed contributions to the NHL level count for something, even with the real possibility of a short shelf life and some projections also have to be taken into account for expected/hoped for futures.
Since this is a value-based snapshot in time, another handy tool may be to consider a hypothetical trade. If you **** ume a trade is going to happen and the other side wants either prospect X or young player Y to finalize the deal, which **** et would the organization be better off holding onto? The answer to that judgement can go a long way towards determining where the young players will slot in against each other for this list, though it isn’t a strict rule of thumb since some player profiles (puck moving defenseman) might have more trade value than organizational value than other spots (goalie, small winger). That consideration is at least some factor in aligning the rankings.

The biggest transaction the New York Giants have made ahead of training camp might actually be the one they did not make.
Third-year wide receiver Malik Nabers has manage to avoid placement on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp. New York placed three players on the list – tight end Thomas Fidone II, defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris and defensive lineman Sam Roberts – but notably left Nabers off of it.
Nabers, 22, missed all but four games in his second season in the NFL after tearing his ACL in a game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The young wideout was coming off of a Pro Bowl rookie season, and his injury in 2025 was a major blow to a Giants offense that was just starting to find its footing under then-rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.
The fact that the Giants did not need to put Nabers on the PUP list is a very positive sign for his recovery from the torn ACL. As New York ramps up its preseason preparation in West Virginia starting on July 28, Nabers will be among training camp participants as he works back up to full speed. Barring any setbacks, the young wideout may be in line to play during the first four weeks of the season.

The Giants announced the first batch of players who will start the upcoming 2026-27 season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and wide receiver Malik Nabers is not on it.
New York is set to start training camp in West Virginia next week, and the club announced that tight end Thomas Fidone II, DL Sam Roberts and DL Roy Robertson-Harris will miss the first four weeks of the season, at least, after being placed on the PUP list on Thursday.
Nabers avoiding the PUP list means there's a chance the former first-round pick could return to the club sooner than expected after the wideout suffered a torn ACL and underwent surgery last October. However, Nabers had to undergo a second surgery on his left knee earlier this year.
Although the second surgery is not ideal for Nabers or the Giants, the club remained optimistic about Nabers' eventual return. They said he was progressing well, but that he wouldn't do much in the early stages of the team's offseason program.
First-year head coach John Harbaugh said on the first day of voluntary workouts that he expects Nabers to get back on the field as they progress deeper into camp and closer to the season.

Generally speaking, most people consider either Michael Jordan or LeBron James to be the GOAT of professional basketball. Jordan was an incredible presence from 1984 to 2003, minus his first two retirements. As for James, he started playing in the NBA in 2003 and, for better or worse, is still playing (he is not the player he used to be, and at some point, his diminishing skills will hurt his legacy).
As we said, most people would go with one of them for the greatest of all time, but not everyone. Take Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Kareem has a somewhat forgotten choice: Oscar Robertson. Robertson was somewhat overshadowed in the 1960s by the Boston Celtics, and the Lakers, first with Jerry West and Elgin Baylor, and later with Wilt Chamberlain, but was he truly great?
Absolutely, he was, and this video makes a plausible argument for placing him ahead of Jordan and James.
Robertson, first and foremost, was decades ahead of his time. He was a 6-5 point guard who averaged a triple-double. He was immensely skilled, and strong enough to box out much bigger players.

Tottenham Hotspur began their preseason campaign with a win in a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side MK Dons at the Tottenham Hotspur training ground.
With several players missing due to the recently completed World Cup, a mix of youth and experience was on display as Roberto De Zerbi heavily rotated his side each half. New signings Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and Martin Dubravka made their debuts, and it was the former who was the difference, with his stunning strike the lone goal in a scrappy encounter.
Here's my top ten talking points from Spurs' first outing under Thomas Frank.
Spurs' first friendly was as notable for who was missing as much as who was named. With the World Cup only recently wrapping up in the Americas, it was obviously much too soon to see the likes of Djed Spence, Pedro Porro, Marcos Senesi, or Cristian Romero; but other players involved in the World Cup also weren't involved. Jan Paul van Hecke, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, Pape Sarr, and Andy Robertson were all missing due to enforced leave following their international duties.
This meant limited learnings as to how the squad will shape up when the season kicked off, and also raises questions as to who will be available for the tour to Australia and New Zealand. An additional point of concern was the absence of James Maddison, who had no such international commitments and who made his return from an ACL injury towards the end of last season. The fact he did not see the pitch is concerning given his injury history. It's a similar situation as well for promising young defender Jun'ai Byfield, also missing the end of the season with injury and not sighted today.

Liverpool have already cleared out a lot of their squad this summer.
The Anfield outfit were destined to have a bit of a re-jig before the 2026-27 season fully kicked off but, ******* ody could have expected three of their first-team regulars to have already packed their bags and exited.
This had led to the Reds severely lacking depth among their ranks with the club just one injury crisis away from being in a worse position than they were last term.
The worst thing about the exits of Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson is that none of them earned Liverpool any money as they all left as free agents with Salah even terminating his deal to get away from L4.
Konate and Robertson have both already sorted their next destinations out but, the Egyptian King's future still isn't decided.

FRISCO, Texas — Jason Robertson and the Dallas Stars will avoid a salary arbitration hearing after the high-scoring forward signed a $12 million contract for next season.
The Stars announced the deal a day before Robertson's 27th birthday and 2 1/2 weeks after he had filed for arbitration.
"Jason has been a cornerstone of our franchise since he was drafted in 2017," Stars general manager Jim Nill said. "A dynamic and skilled player, he has been one of the league's top offensive threats since making his NHL debut."
Robertson, who has 490 points (213 goals and 277 ******* ists) in his 456 regular-season career games with the Stars, could become an unrestricted free agent for the first time next summer.

Dundee boss Steven Pressley lamented his side's lack of control after a League Cup group draw with third-tier Ross County allowed the lower-league side to ***** a bonus point from the Premiership club.

Iran and the ‌United States exchanged intensifying fire in a week-long escalation that has largely unravelled last month's truce, spurring safe-haven bids for the dollar ‌and pushing oil prices to near one-month highs.
Meanwhile, U.S. consumer sentiment climbed to a five-month high in July, although traders said the respite may prove temporary with renewed conflict in the Middle East driving up gasoline prices.
"The tech-led global equity market plunge and ongoing disruption to Strait of Hormuz traffic have triggered a flight to safety," said Elias Haddad, global head of markets strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman. "USD recovered some of this week's losses, and global bond yields edged a bit lower."

The Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors remain at a standstill regarding the proposed trade that would bring Kawhi Leonard back to Canada.
Leonard’s seven-year tenure with the Clippers ended after he was traded to the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, June 30, for forward Brandon Ingram, guard Gradey ******* , two unprotected first-round picks (2031, 2033), two second-round picks (2030, 2033) and a 2027 first-round swap.
Both teams have since put a halt to the trade, citing the ongoing investigation surrounding Leonard, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, and Leonard's uncle/advisor Dennis Robertson. All three men were allegedly involved in a “no-show” agreement with a company, Aspiration, to funnel extra compensation to the player as part of a salary cap circumvention.

Just a day after the arbitration hearing schedule was announced, the Pittsburgh Penguins and restricted free agent winger Nick Robertson won’t need their scheduled court date.
Tuesday, the Penguins and Robertson agreed to a two-year deal with a $3.25 million average annual value, thus avoiding arbitration and locking up the 24-year-old winger for a couple of seasons.
Robertson, 24, made just over $1.8 million last season.

After Victor Munoz's arrival, transfer news from Anfield has slowed down with some journalists even saying that the Reds don't really need to sign that many more players.
However, the fact that Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson have all left means that there are still several voids that need to be filled.
This, coupled with the fact that the Reds didn't even replace Luis Diaz last summer means that there's still a lot of work to be done.

There's a real full-back problem at Liverpool. That problem actually arrived in 2025 with Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving the club but to say it's been exacerbated since then is an understatement.
Andy Robertson has now left as well, while Conor Bradley has a serious injury that rules him out long-term. Jeremie Frimpong, signed as Alexander-Arnold's replacement, looks incapable of playing there reliably - or at least, Arne Slot gave up on the idea.
As things stand, Kostas Tsimikas will return to fill the Robertson void. He's another who hasn't been trusted in the past and even AS Roma were reluctant to play him.
Milos Kerkez stands as the sole reliable full-back, then. It's not really enough.

While the club broke transfer records, the problem for the transfer guru was what they could not buy. Or did not, anyway.
Liverpool's summer departures will include Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and, now, Michael Edwards; in his first stint at Anfield, perhaps the most celebrated sporting director in the game. In his second, as Fenway Sports Group's CEO of football, a man heading a multi-club operation with a solitary club.
Edwards' decision to move on, a year before the end of his lucrative contract, was made last autumn, when he handed in his notice. It predated much of Liverpool's troubled season and the sacking of Arne Slot, if not the record outlay of £450m on players, and £125m on Alexander Isak, last summer.
But when he was persuaded to return, it was supposedly to head up a bigger project. FSG looked at a host of other clubs – Malaga, Bordeaux, Toulouse, and 20 or more others – but bought none. The outlay was of more than half a billion on players, including this summer's additions, but nothing on clubs. FSG was not to become Merseyside's answer to the City Football Group or (perhaps thankfully) BlueCo.
It also invited the question of what Liverpool's collection of directors of football all did. Edwards brought Julian Ward back, as FSG's technical director, and recruited Pedro Marques, as their director of football development, while Richard Hughes, an ally from his Portsmouth days, was his appointment as sporting director of Liverpool.

The Italian manager wants to rebuild the spine of his side, believing the team's frailties originate in the middle of the pitch. A £52 million deal for centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke has been struck, as have free transfers for Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson.

The Pittsburgh Penguins apparently aren't giving up in their pursuit of Jason Robertson.
Robertson, the star winger from the Dallas Stars, is a restricted free agent and set to go to salary arbitration with his current team.
The Athletic's Josh Yohe, though, suggests that Robertson could still end up with the Penguins.
In a podcast appearance by Yohe, summed up by hockey ***** yst Matt Meaghar, Yohe made it quite clear Pittsburgh doesn't believe it's out of the picture here:
