Replacing a productive starter is difficult. Replacing one of the defense's leaders can be even harder. The Philadelphia Eagles certainly understand that reality. Following Reed Blankenship's departure, they're in familiar territory, managing roster turnover, but rather than asking one player to fill every aspect of his role, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio appears to be taking a different approach.
Philadelphia will likely rely on Coach Fangio's unit early this season. Recently, he spoke with the media at Eagles camp. When asked who would **** ume the communication responsibilities in the secondary, a role Blankenship filled admirably, Fangio didn't identify a single successor. Instead, he named several.
"That'll be both of them (Marcus Epps and Andrew Mukuba). When it's Mukuba and Epps back there, they'll both do it. Epps is very capable of that, and I think Andrew is too. He'll get even better and better, this being his second year and being more confident... And Cooper DeJean, when he's there, he'll be capable of it."
Those comments offer a revealing glimpse into how Philadelphia plans to move forward after losing one of its defensive leaders. Communication won't fall on one player. It, like everything else on this Eagles defense, will evolve into a more team effort.
Blankenship's value extended beyond tackles and interceptions. As one of the defense's primary communicators, he helped organize coverages, relay adjustments and keep the secondary aligned before the snap. Those responsibilities don't disappear simply because he has left to continue his career with the Houston Texans. Instead of placing that burden entirely on Marcus Epps or expecting Mukuba to become the defense's lone voice immediately, Fangio is cultivating multiple players who can direct traffic from the back end.

Borussia Dortmund have officially completed the signing of Greek international Konstantinos Karetsas from Belgian side KRC Genk. Karetsas gets set to begin the Bundesliga chapter of his career after signing a five-year contract with the Bundesliga runners-up through June 30, 2031. Kicker reports that Dortmund are paying a guaranteed transfer fee of €30m, with realistically attainable bonuses capable of increasing the package to €32m.
Genk have also reportedly secured a ten-percent share of any future transfer profit. Sport Bild places Karetsas' base salary at approximately €3.5m per year, with further performance-related bonuses built into his contract. The agreement concludes a prolonged transfer saga. Dortmund initially increased their offer to more than €30m after Genk rejected an earlier proposal.
The clubs subsequently failed to bridge the remaining financial gap, despite Karetsas having already agreed personal terms through 2031. Genk initially sought a guaranteed €35m and an overall package potentially reaching €40m.
Sporting director Nils Ole Book publicly addressed Dortmund's unsuccessful initial pursuit of Karetsas before electing to skip the club's tour of ****** an to continue working on the club's outstanding transfer business.
Karetsas is expected to fill the creative vacancy created by Julian Brandt's departure. Over the past several weeks, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has found herself at the center of some controversy after she spoke out against transgender women competing in women's sports. As a result of those comments, she did not exactly receive a warm welcome from fans on Sunday afternoon.

WASHINGTON — After nearly nine hours of intermittent heavy rain, thunder and lightning Sunday, the DC Open postponed its women's and men's finals until Monday.
Rain delayed the start of the women's final between the No. 1 seed American Jessica Pegula and rising star Alex Eala of the Philippines by three hours Sunday. Pegula won the first set, 6-4, in smothering humidity and Eala led 2-1 in the second before the rain came again and the tournament suspended play just before 4 p.m.
Pegula and Eala will resume their match at noon Monday. The men's final between No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz of the United States and the young Spaniard Rafael Jodar will follow.
The tournament announced the postponements at 9:06 p.m. to a hearty few members of the crowd who were still hanging out on the grounds.
The prospect of a Monday final is slightly complicated for the DC Open, which, as a late-summer tournament held in the mid-Atlantic, deals with weather delays nearly every year. But summer storms rarely affect the final in Washington, and extending the tournament by a day puts players in a slight time crunch as the next event on most players' calendars — the National Bank Open, which hosts its men's event in Montreal this year and women's event in Toronto — already started Sunday.

DENVER (AP) — The judge who granted the right to play another year of college sports to some athletes whose eligibility ran out last school year issued a new order Sunday that makes clear that does not include football players who signed pro contracts this summer then had a change of heart.
U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney responded to an NCAA request for clarity about her Friday ruling that granted a fifth year to athletes who graduated high school in 2022 and were not included in the new NCAA rule that allows five seasons of eligibility for Division I players.
That decision, she said, still stands, but has no impact on other NCAA rules, including its prohibition on players signing pro contracts, then coming back to college.
The ruling, as first written, had the potential to upend the upcoming college football season, where teams are starting camp planning on the so-called "five for five" rule to take effect beginning next fall.
Extending it to players this fall granted hundreds a chance to return to school. In the direct aftermath of the decision, some media reports were listing players on NFL and CFL rosters who were signaling they'd be open to returning to school.

Elfyn Evans extended his lead at the top of the World Rally Championship standings to 30 points as Toyota team-mate Sami Pajari won his home event in Finland.
Evans and co-driver Scott Martin finished in third place for Toyota despite a roll on Saturday, which ended their chances of victory, and hold a healthy margin with four rounds remaining.
The 37-year-old, who has been a runner-up in the WRC five times, lost two minutes when he ran wide on a corner, rolled and got stuck in a ditch on the 14th stage of 20 in the rally.
With the help of spectators - including his dad, former rally driver Gwyndaf, who just happened to be spectating near where he crashed - Evans was able to return to service where Toyota mechanics repairs his GR Yaris.
"A surreal set of circumstances, but we owe the guys who fixed the car because without them the rally would have been over," Evans said after completing the rally.

Joao Pedro only joined the west London outfit last summer, in time for leading their Club World Cup-winning charge in the United States.
A bargain from Brighton for $67 million (£50 million), he penned a seven-year contract that runs until 2032 which is now reportedly set to be extended for another 12 months with presumably improved conditions.
