Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has found her niche off the bench this season, has become a household name. Interestingly, Cunningham's rapid rise is more about her views off the court than it is about her play on it.
In a July 21 ESPN profile, Cunningham commented on what she felt was necessary to "protect women's sports."
"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" she told the Worldwide Leader after being asked about the "MAGA Barbie" nickname some fans have given her.
"I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
Local media approached Cunningham about the comments a few days later and she doubled down.
