TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — President Donald Trump said late Saturday that he would halt new planned attacks on Iran pending renewed talks to wind down the war and revive stalled cargo traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
It was the latest in a pattern of announcements the U.S. president has made to first threaten massive strikes and then later call them off. The abrupt shifts have been a defining feature of the five-month conflict that has sent prices of oil and basic goods soaring — and the announcements to date have been upended by renewed attacks days or even hours afterward.
Here is a look at some of Trump's past major announcements about pausing strikes against Iran:
The United States and Iran agree to a two-week ceasefire to end the intense fighting that began on Feb. 28 with Israeli and U.S. attacks. Trump makes the announcement less than two hours before a deadline he had set for Tehran to capitulate or face attacks on bridges and power plants — strikes he said would mean "a whole civilization will die."
Trump announces that the U.S. is indefinitely extending its ceasefire with Iran a day before it was to expire. He adds that he has been asked by mediators to hold off on attacks to give Iranian leaders time to come up with additional proposals. The fragile ceasefire lasts until May 8, when the U.S. carried out strikes on Iranian tankers.

The FBI is investigating a cyberattack launched on more than 30 municipal water systems across Minnesota, with a senior law enforcement official telling NBC News it bears all the hallmarks of Iranian-backed hackers. It comes as the war between the United States and Iran dramatically escalated following the collapse of a brief ceasefire. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports for TODAY.

ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) is one of the top energy names in President Donald Trump's financial disclosures from earlier this year. The stock is up about 27% so far this year. But does a presidential trade make it a buy today? Let's break down what's actually driving the stock.
Exxon benefits directly from rising oil prices amid the Iran war. Its upstream segment was projected to see a multibillion-dollar earnings lift for the second quarter compared to the first, driven almost entirely by higher realized prices rather than any change in production. That's the logic behind buying an oil major right as a Middle East conflict escalates.
Exxon's balance sheet gives it room to lean into higher prices. Net debt relative to EBITDA sits under 1x, among the lowest in the industry, and the company is on pace to repurchase roughly $20 billion of stock this year. Guyana production just hit a quarterly record above 900,000 barrels a day, and the company has applied to drill dozens more wells there.
In the Permian Basin, Exxon is now the largest operator following its Pioneer acquisition and expects to roughly double output there by 2030. Longer term, natural gas tied to data center power demand is another growth lever bulls point to, with McKinsey estimating data centers could eventually account for more than a tenth of total U.S. power demand.
There's a demand question sitting underneath the price spike. The IEA sees global oil demand softening this year, and even OPEC, which tends to run more optimistic, trimmed its own demand growth forecast. If the Iran-driven premium in oil prices fades if another ceasefire takes place, some of Exxon's near-term earnings boost fades with it.

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. trade deficit in goods narrowed in June amid a broad decline in imports, but the improvement was probably insufficient to prevent trade from again subtracting from economic growth in the second quarter.
The report from the Commerce Department on Tuesday also showed exports dropping to a five-month low, pulled down by a sharp decline in shipments of industrial supplies, which include petroleum. The decrease likely reflected a pullback in crude oil prices amid a fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran.
With businesses ramping up investment in artificial intelligence and consumer spending resilient, last month's drop in imports could be temporary. The AI build-out is reliant on imports. The government on Monday reported a strong increase in orders and shipments for non-defense capital goods in June.
"Our model mapping the trade data onto the national accounts now points to net trade subtracting around one percentage point from second-quarter GDP growth," said Oliver Allen, senior U.S. economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

Wall Street woke up in a good mood on Monday. Oil prices were tumbling on news of a U.S.-Iran ceasefire, and all three major indexes opened solidly higher. By midday, that optimism had largely evaporated.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) was clinging to a 0.2% gain at 12:06 p.m. ET, down from an early peak of 1.3%. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) had slipped 0.2% into the red after starting the day up 0.9%. The Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) was off 0.5%, having completely erased its 1.1% opening pop.

Brent crude dropped approximately 6% to around $86.40 per barrel after the U.S. and Iran agreed to pause military strikes while diplomatic talks resume. Lower oil means less inflation pressure, which means the Fed might ease up on rate hikes. Treasury yields dipped accordingly.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles at American forces in the Middle East on Tuesday, shattering a brief pause in fighting as mediators tried to get both sides back to negotiations and toward a ceasefire, the U.S. military said.
All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted, the U.S. Central Command said in a statement, adding that U.S. forces "remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness."
The United States and Iran had experienced a period of calm, during which neither announced attacks for days following weeks of escalation over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf waterway and narrow chokepoint through which 20% of the world's oil normally flows.
There was no immediate comment from Tehran on the U.S. military statement or the strikes.
Iran effectively closed the strait when the war began by firing at freighters and tankers off its coast or threatening them. Following the signing of an interim ceasefire deal in June, a battle for control over the strait erupted.

President Trump's campaign for lower interest rates in the U.S. faces another setback this week at the meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Wall Street ***** ysts have generally come to the conclusion that the FOMC will hold rates steady, if not hike them—and Trump's own foreign policy is an underlying factor.
The FOMC, led by central bank chairman Kevin Warsh, will meet Tuesday and Wednesday of this week to discuss progress toward its targets of maximum employment and inflation at 2%.
It is the latter task that has caused the Fed some difficulty over the past few years. At the time of writing, inflation stands at 3.5%—a drop from May to June, but still elevated compared with the start of the year and the Fed's target.
Part of that reading has come from higher fuel prices, up 15.7% from a year ago. While pressure in this category is beginning to fade (down 4.9% May to June), prices remain elevated as a result of conflict in the Middle East, choking global oil supply as a result.
There is little sign of a resolution between Washington and Tehran in sight. While the two sides are not currently engaged in active military conflict, as they have been over the past fortnight, no official ceasefire has been announced. While the fragile pause of fire allows ***** e for diplomacy to proceed, neither side has indicated they will capitulate over control of the Strait of Hormuz—the key shipping lane in the movement of oil around the planet.
Trump's foreign policy is therefore standing in the way of Warsh's path to a cut—Wall Street ***** ysts highlighted at the start of the week.
Bank of America's base case is for a hold this month, wrote chief U.S. economist Aditya Bhave and his team: "With markets now pricing nearly 10 [basis points] of hikes in July, Chair Warsh faces a difficult choice. Not hiking could challenge the Fed's credibility on inflation. But raising rates would go against his framework of looking through supply shocks.

If your portfolio has been riding the same cluster of mega-cap technology stocks since 2023, Morgan Stanley has a timely warning.
The S&P 500climbed about 20% from its April low to a record high near 7,620 on June 2, fueled by optimism over the U.S.–Iran ceasefire and persistent enthusiasm for artificial intelligence.
Since then, the benchmark has stalled, closing near 7,457 on July 17 and struggling to gain traction despite strong corporate earnings.
Giant stocks are pulling in opposite directions, and those offsetting moves are keeping the broader market locked in place.
Morgan Stanley Wealth Management chief investment officer Lisa Shalett laid out those dynamics in her July Global Investment Committee presentation.

Interested in RTX Corporation? Here are five stocks we like better.
RTX and Lockheed Martin both beat Q2 earnings and revenue estimates, sending shares up 7% and 10%, respectively, and expanding their record contract backlogs.
Neither company's backlog yet reflects the resumed Iran conflict, while an unenacted 2027 NDAA could threaten multiyear defense procurement contracts if not signed by October 1.
Lockheed's backlog is nearly all defense-related with limited commodity risk, whereas RTX's backlog is 58% exposed to commercial aerospace risks like fuel prices and airline capacity.
The war trade has resumed in July, and earnings from two of the U.S.'s most prominent defense contractors are leading the tape. After weak Q1 reports and a tenuous Iran ceasefire, aerospace and defense stocks deepened their drawdowns as the market repriced the re-stock trade and institutional selling intensified. But now that the war is back on and Q2 reports from defense companies are rolling in, the repricing is being repriced. Does the defense trade have staying power this time?

Less than a month ago, **** ysts were warning of a looming glut of crude oil as tanker traffic via the Strait of Hormuz began to recover amid a U.S.-Iran ceasefire. Within days of these warnings, the ceasefire was a painful memory, missiles were flying again, and now Yemen's Houthis are striking tankers in the Red Sea, which makes two blocked oil chokepoints and a very real danger of a global recession.
Brent crude this week topped $100 per barrel on reports that the Houthis had struck two Saudi tankers in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which Saudi Arabia is currently using as the primary outlet for its crude amid the Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Soon enough it emerged that tankers that were heading to the Red Sea waterway were making U-turns and heading to alternative routes—which take longer and cost more.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone strikes on the Caspian Pipeline System's terminus on the Black Sea have forced Kazakhstan to suspend most of its oil exports. The target of the drone attacks was the Novorossiysk port on Russia's Black Sea coast, which also happens to be the point of departure of the bulk of Kazakh oil exports to world markets. Bloomberg reported this week that tanker operators were getting nervous about sending their vessels to the port of Novorossiysk because Ukrainian drones were also striking ships at the port.
The Strait of Hormuz used to see average daily oil volumes of some 20 million barrels daily. This has now slowed to a trickle. The Red Sea chokepoint of Bab el-Mandeb has been handling between 4 and 5 million barrels daily of Saudi oil in recent weeks, according to different estimates. Now, this too appears to be almost completely blocked. Add to this the loss of 1.7 million barrels daily in Kazakh flows to Novorossiysk, and the global oil supply picture takes on a rather grim tint. Additionally, the Ukrainian forces continue to target Russian refineries, which has already led to a temporary ban on diesel exports at a time when global fuel inventories are getting strained by the first-wave effects of the Middle East war.
In fact, the situation with refined petroleum products is a major crisis in its own right. "Unlike crude oil, refined products face far fewer mitigation options. Several Middle Eastern refineries remain affected by the ongoing conflict while Russia's diesel export restrictions continue to constrain global availability," Ole Hansen, Saxo Bank's head of commodity strategy, said in an **** ysis earlier this month. "Refining capacity globally also remains relatively limited, preventing crude supply increases from quickly translating into additional diesel and gasoline production," he added.

The second wave of the US-Iran conflict shows no signs of letting up. Attacks by the Houthi militia have threatened to curtail shipping through the Red Sea. Russia's refineries are buckling under the weight of bombardment by the Ukrainian military.
For global oil markets, already in a precarious situation, critical logistical nodes just keep getting thwarted. Things keep going wrong. Oil prices have started rebounding in return, reaching levels not seen since the first weeks of June before the signing of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding as Brent futures (BZ=F) crossed $100 per barrel on Thursday.
"If a ceasefire does not materialize," Rystad Energy head of geopolitical ***** ysis Jorge León said, "the risk of a significant rebound in oil prices would be substantial."
As the war between the US and Iran initially began in late February, attention swung toward the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway responsible for roughly a fifth of the world's oil trade. Threats of violence and, eventually, direct attacks on vessels by Iranian military wings sent traffic through the strait collapsing, kicking off the largest energy supply crisis on record.
Six months down the road, as the conflict has reignited, the danger for the global oil market has diversified, no longer concentrated in a single waterway or oil-producing country. Instead, disruptions are accumulating across the infrastructure that carries crude from the Middle East, processes Russian oil into 11% of the world's diesel, and supplies fuel to consumers from Europe to Asia — and at a time when the market is already squeezed after half a year's worth of supply disruptions.

The European Central Bank is expected to leave rates unchanged at its meeting concluding today, choosing patience over prediction and preserving maximum room for manoeuvre ahead of a big decision by September.
Neither traders nor ******* ysts believe the ECB will deliver a second consecutive hike today after last month's increase. That means the deposit rate is seen remaining at 2.25%, a level officials have described as being "appropriate" as they evaluate implications of a re-escalation in the US-Iran conflict.
In an economists' panel for Bloomberg I sat on, most economists left open the chance of a second quarter-point rise in rates by September, when policymakers will have new quarterly projections.
A ceasefire following the June ECB meeting along with weaker-than-anticipated inflation that month had bolstered hopes that the worst of the crisis may have passed. However – fresh hostilities recently, placing Brent oil back around USD 100 a barrel, have revived expectations for more tightening ahead.
Traders currently wager that an initial June move will be followed up by another in September and a final one by the end of this year. The ECB's projections last month were based on ******* umptions for a total of three hikes this cycle.

Malaysia could return to the Formula 1 calendar for the first time since 2017 as the sport eyes up contingency plans for the second half of the 2026 season.
After races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were cancelled in April due to the conflict in the Middle East, F1 is keen to add to its current 22-race calendar and was hopeful of racing in Bahrain in October, in between already scheduled races in Azerbaijan (26 September) and Singapore (11 October).
However, given the recent escalation in the region after the ending of the US-Iran ceasefire, F1 bosses are seeking alternatives and the Sepang International Circuit, just outside Kuala Lumpur, is one option.
Malaysia withdrew from the sport in 2017 when they couldn’t match the host fees required, yet the racetrack is still used regularly for other series such as MotoGP.
In this instance, its proximity to Singapore means a Europe-Asia triple-header, over the last weekend in September and the first two weekends in October, is feasible.

Fred Alger Management, an investment management company, released its "Alger Small Cap Focus Fund" second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. U.S. equities experienced a strong recovery in Q2 2026, with the S&P 500 Index gaining 15.2%, marking its best quarter since 2020. A ceasefire between the United States and Iran and accelerated investment in artificial intelligence (AI) fueled market optimism in the quarter, driving the Information Technology and Industrials sectors forward while Energy and Utilities lagged due to falling oil and gas prices. In June, the Federal Reserve maintained steady interest rates, but the meeting had a hawkish tone. As AI transitions into its agentic phase, opportunities are identified within sectors adopting the technology. The Alger Small Cap Focus Fund's Class A shares outperformed the Russell 2000 Growth Index in the quarter, driven by strong performances in the Industrials and Health Care sectors, while Financials and Consumer Discretionary detracted from the performance. We view Forte favorably given the differentiated mechanism underlying FB102 and its potential applicability across multiple sizeable indications, supported by encouraging early celiac data and a series of meaningful clinical readouts anticipated through the balance of the year. Shares detracted from performance during the quarter, pressured by an equity raise whose limited initial disclosure was poorly received, as well as by growing investor impatience as anticipated vitiligo data extended beyond the previously communicated timeline. Despite a challenging quarter, we remain constructive ahead of the celiac readout expected later this year and cautiously optimistic on the forthcoming vitiligo results. We believe FB102 retains meaningful strategic value as its clinical profile comes into clearer focus."

Fred Alger Management, an investment management company, released its "Alger Weatherbie Specialized Growth Fund" second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. U.S. equities experienced a strong recovery in Q2 2026, with the S&P 500 Index gaining 15.2%, marking its best quarter since 2020. A ceasefire between the United States and Iran and accelerated investment in artificial intelligence (AI) regained market optimism in the quarter, leading the Information Technology and Industrials sectors upward, and Energy and Utilities lagged because of falling oil and gas prices. In June, the Federal Reserve maintained steady interest rates, but the meeting had a hawkish tone. As AI transitions into its agentic phase, opportunities are identified within sectors adopting the technology. The Weatherbie Specialized Growth Fund's Class A shares outperformed the Russell 2500 Growth Index in the quarter. The Industrials and Information Technology sectors contributed to the relative performance, whereas Financials and Consumer Discretionary sectors detracted. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Alger Weatherbie Specialized Growth Fund mentioned stocks like Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT). Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) a US-based franchise that operates fitness centers under the Planet Fitness brand, detracted from the Fund's performance during the quarter. On July 20, 2026, Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) closed at $55.25 per share. One-month return of Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) was 6.58%, and its shares lost 51.34% over the past 52 weeks. Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) has a market capitalization of $4.38 billion.
Alger Weatherbie Specialized Growth Fund stated the following regarding Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) is one of the largest fitness club franchisors in the world, operating a budget-friendly gym model built around low monthly dues, broad accessibility, and a welcoming brand position. We believe the company benefits from a capital-light franchise structure, strong brand recognition, and a meaningful long-term opportunity to expand its club base both in the U.S. and internationally. During the quarter, shares detracted from performance after the company lowered both its revenue and earnings outlook, as member sign-ups fell short of internal expectations following a recent brand repositioning. Sentiment was also pressured by management transition concerns, including the departure of the Chief Financial Officer, as well as broader pressure on discretionary consumer spending."

Fred Alger Management, an investment management company, released its "Alger Mid Cap Focus Fund" second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. US equities strongly rebounded in the second quarter, with the S&P 500 Index returning 15.2%. A ceasefire between the United States and Iran and accelerated investment in artificial intelligence (AI) fueled market optimism in the quarter, driving the Information Technology and Industrials sectors forward, while Energy and Utilities lagged due to falling oil and gas prices. Despite discussions about AI disruption, opportunities are identified within sectors adopting the technology as it enters its agentic phase. The Alger Mid Cap Focus Fund's Class A shares outperformed the Russell Midcap Growth Index in the quarter, driven by strong performances in Information Technology and Health Care, while Communication Services and Consumer Discretionary detracted from the performance. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Alger Mid Cap Focus Fund highlighted Insmed Incorporated (NASDAQ:INSM). Insmed Incorporated (NASDAQ:INSM) is a biopharmaceutical company focusing on developing therapies for patients with serious and rare diseases. On July 17, 2026, Insmed Incorporated (NASDAQ:INSM) closed at $108.32 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $23.49 billion. Insmed Incorporated (NASDAQ:INSM) posted a one-month return of 9.85%, and its shares gained 5.39% over the past 52 weeks.
Alger Mid Cap Focus Fund stated the following regarding Insmed Incorporated (NASDAQ:INSM) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Insmed Incorporated (NASDAQ:INSM), GFL Environmental Inc, and Karman Holdings Inc. were among the top detractors from performance. Insmed is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on respiratory, inflammatory, pulmonary, and rare disease treatments, with an approved portfolio that includes Brinsupri and Arikayce. The company's opportunity is tied to expanding adoption of its commercial products while advancing a pipeline aimed at areas of meaningful unmet medical need. During the quarter, shares detracted from performance despite headline results that were generally better than expected, as investors focused on early launch dynamics for Brinsupri. Concerns centered on patient additions, discontinuation rates, and compliance trends, which raised questions about the quality and durability of the launch. While these issues pressured the stock, management has begun providing greater detail around launch dynamics, and we believe improved execution and additional data could help restore investor confidence over time."

L1 Capital, an investment management firm, released its "L1 Long Short Fund" second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The market's main themes in the June quarter were the Iran conflict and developments in the AI sector. These trends shifted after oil prices declined due to a ceasefire agreement, leading to a reversal. AI stocks surged, driven by strong earnings, rapid capital investment, and critical supply shortages. During this period, the L1 Long Short Fund achieved notable gains, rising 12.7% compared to the ASX200AI's 4.0%, with year-to-date returns at 12.5% versus 2.4%. U.S. equities outperformed, especially those benefiting from AI-related capital expenditure. The firm is satisfied with the portfolio's positioning, emphasizing strong medium-term growth potential, supported by attractive valuations, solid earnings, and robust cash flow. In addition, you can check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, L1 Long Short Fund highlighted James Hardie Industries plc (NYSE:JHX). Based in Dublin, Ireland, James Hardie Industries plc (NYSE:JHX) is a building materials company that manufactures and supplies fiber cement, fiber gypsum, and cement-bonded building products. On July 17, 2026, James Hardie Industries plc (NYSE:JHX) closed at $25.82 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $14.98 billion. James Hardie Industries plc (NYSE:JHX) posted a one-month return of 5.34%, while its shares lost 1.64% over the past 52 weeks.
L1 Long Short Fund stated the following regarding James Hardie Industries plc (NYSE:JHX) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"James Hardie Industries plc (NYSE:JHX) (+46%) shares recovered over the quarter following easing Middle East tensions and on management's release of a constructive FY27 outlook, which included a pathway to return the core North American fibre cement business to volume growth, despite a subdued U.S. housing market. We expect this volume recovery to be supported by normalisation of channel inventory following the 2025 destocking period, improving execution in repair & remodel / smaller-builder channels, the Trim-Over installation method, competitor exits and continued material conversion from vinyl and wood.
In our view, the market is still applying a discounted multiple to James Hardie to reflect recent execution, governance and housing-cycle concerns. As these issues are progressively addressed, we believe there is scope for both earnings growth and recovery in the valuation multiple over time."

CAIRO (AP) — The Israeli military is quietly but quickly building a giant earthen barrier separating the over 50% of the Gaza Strip it controls from the rest of the territory, according to satellite imagery, further entrenching the division of the tiny Palestinian enclave.
More than 23 kilometers (14 miles) have been constructed in recent months, running through Palestinian communities demolished by the military. That is equivalent to more than half the length of the coastal strip, which is some 40 kilometers (25 miles) long and 11 kilometers (7 miles) wide, and home to over 2 million Palestinians.
When presented with the satellite images, Israel's military confirmed to The ******* ociated Press it has built a physical barrier in the area of the so-called yellow line, the boundary to which Israeli troops withdrew under the October ceasefire deal with Hamas. The line was envisioned in the U.S.-backed agreement as a temporary division of the territory pending a fuller Israeli withdrawal.
But as the truce stagnates, it appears Israel is digging in, heightening Palestinian fears that the line is morphing into a border. Neither U.S. Central Command, which is tasked with monitoring the ceasefire, nor the Board of Peace, the body led by U.S. President Donald Trump meant to eventually oversee Gaza, would comment on the barrier.
Along with the barrier, the military told AP it has developed a "security zone" around the line, equipped with intelligence and technological ******* ets. It declined to give details on the route of the barrier when asked how far it would be extended. It said the barrier aimed to prevent infiltration and protect Israeli troops and Israeli communities near Gaza.

Fox News host Maria Bartiromo's comment about Donald Trump and the Iran war had critics saying she'd almost, just almost, stumbled upon the real issue.
On Sunday, Bartiromo said as the conflict continued following the collapse of the ceasefire:
Politics: Trump Sending His Luxury Qatari Jet That Lacks Missile Defenses Back For More Modifications
"I don't understand how it is possible that Iran has the capabilities to fight this way and continue to try to lash out at Gulf countries and U.S. military bases because the U.S. has obliterated Iran's military and the president continues to reiterate that."
