It's been a lengthy offseason, but at long last, football is just around the corner for the Oregon Ducks. Not only does that mean that fans can go back to watching and breaking down play on the field instead of theorizing about what's to come, but it also means that one of our favorite weekly traditions in Eugene has returned as well.
Uniform releases.
On Wednesday evening, the Ducks unveiled their Week 1 jerseys for their game against the Boise State Broncos. For the season-opener, Oregon will be rocking a green and yellow look, with yellow helmets, a green top, and yellow pants.
This look is similar to what we saw last year against the James Madison Dukes in the College Football Playoff, but with a yellow helmet instead of green.
While the uniform combo for this first game against Boise State is relatively tame compared to Oregon's standards, there is an early expectation that a couple of games will get some special jersey treatment in Eugene. Earlier this year, at Big Ten Media Days, tight end Jamari Johnson dropped a hint that the uniforms in Week 4 against the USC Trojans, and the final week of the year against the Washington Huskies, are going to be special.

Following the passing of its legendary founder, Dollywood has revealed its plans for a permanent memorial to honor Dolly Parton,
Eugene Naughton, Dollywood Parks & Resorts President, shared the details in a press release on September 2.
"Many of us had extensive conversations with Dolly through the years about how she would want us to carry her vision forward," explained Naughton. "Dollywood will always be a place where families find fun, kindness, and joy — a place where they can make memories that last a lifetime, just like she would have wanted. We will carry her dreams forward by continuing to grow, welcoming even more guests, and sharing the warmth and hospitality of which she was so proud."
Additionally, Dollywood will construct new "experiences and installations that honor [Parton's] remarkable contributions, enduring values, and love for the people and places of the Great Smoky Mountains." The vision is to give guests "meaningful opportunities to reflect on Dolly's life, her faith, and her influence while experiencing the joy, imagination, and togetherness that have always been at the heart of her vision for Dollywood."
The Sevierville Chamber of Commerce is launching "In Dolly's Footsteps," a walking tour in Tennessee featuring historic markers at places Dolly Parton and her family frequented during her childhood.

The Oregon Ducks continue to load up on recruiting visits for a critical November matchup at Autzen Stadium. The Ducks will host five-star wideout Braylon Clark on Nov. 14, when Michigan comes to Eugene for an important Big Ten clash.
Clark, a top 10 player in the 2028 recruiting class, has lined up six visits for the fall. The 6-foot-3 receiver from Charlotte, North Carolina, will check out LSU, Texas A&M, Alabama and Miami this fall, as well as taking two trips to Ohio State. He'll be in Columbus to see the Buckeyes take on the Ducks before heading to Eugene the following weekend.
Ohio State is seen as the favorite, but Oregon has also been involved from the start. The Ducks have not added a commitment in the 2028 cycle yet, but Dan Lanning has had historic success landing elite wideouts on the recruiting trail in recent years. Clark could continue the trend, but the Ducks will have to put in the work.
"My favorite thing that Dan Lanning has built is the culture he built and it gets me excited that I have an opportunity to play for him," Clark told Rivals. "(I have a) great relationship with receivers coach (Ross Douglas) and seeing their receiver production."
Clark broke out as a sophomore at Providence Day School, catching 65 passes for 1,093 yards and 14 touchdowns. He's already off to a hot start in two games so far this season, making 11 catches for 209 yards and three touchdowns.

The Oregon Ducks coaching staff is hard at work recruiting the quarterback position in the 2028 class, reportedly emerging recently among the favorites for four-star Tristin Gaines, who's scheduled a gameday visit this fall. But that's not stopping Dan Lanning and Co. from continuing to cast a wide net, as four-star passer Tommy Devany has scheduled a gameday visit as well in Eugene.
Devany, the No. 16 quarterback and No. 236 player overall in the 2028 class according to 247Sports Composite, will be in Eugene for the Ducks' Nov. 14 matchup against the Michigan Wolverines. He's also set to take gameday visits to California (Sept. 5), Arkansas (Sept. 26), Utah (Nov. 7) and Stanford (Nov. 28).
A Clovis, CA, native, Devany competes for Buchanan High school and is the 18th-ranked player in the talent-rich state of California. As a sophomore in 2025, Devany completed 62% of his passes for 2,408 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding another three scores on the ground.
Standing 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, Devany collected a bevy of offers earlier this year, but appears to have narrowed his lift down to five with Oregon included. Having received the commitment of Will Mencl, the No. 4 quarterback in the 2027 class, it's not necessarily imperative for the Ducks to have a quarterback commit in the 2028 class.
After all, they survived without one in the 2026 class after four-star Bryson Beaver signed his letter of intent but entered the transfer portal and landed with the Georgia Bulldogs. Oregon has dipped into the transfer portal for both depth and starting-level talent, and could do so in the future.

Well, they lost the first one. But they're back to try it again! The San Francisco Giants are hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second game of a doubleheader, and are hoping to split the four-game series.
It's an exciting pitching situation for the Giants, as right-hander Yunior Marte takes the mound for his MLB debut. Marte — not to be confused with the reliever of the same name, who pitched for San Francisco in 2022 — is a young prospect whom the Giants acquired a year ago in the Mike Yastrzemski trade. He is, shockingly, following in Jonah **** 's footsteps as the second player the Giants have called up directly from AA this year … after going nearly a decade without making such a move.
Marte, who turned 23 earlier this month, has a strong fastball/slider combo, with a splitter as well. He's fastball reliant, and sits mid-90s, while occasionally touching high-90s. He does a good job limiting walks, despite a slightly herky-jerky motion that isn't always conducive to consistent strike-throwing. In 13 starts with AA Richmond this year, Marte posted a 3.92 ERA and a 3.97 FIP, with 72 strikeouts and 22 walks in 64.1 innings. He started the year with High-A Eugene, where he had a 3.74 ERA and a 4.11 FIP in nine games, with 41 strikeouts and 19 walks in 43.1 innings. He was not on the 40-man roster (though he would have been a Rule 5 decision this winter), so the Giants made a spot for him by moving Casey Schmitt to the 60-Day IL. The Giants made **** e on the active roster by optioning lefty Seth Lonsway, who made his MLB debut in the first game of the doubleheader.
For Arizona, it's lefty Mitch Bratt, who is also a 23-year old lefty. Bratt, who was a fifth-round pick in 2021, has made nine appearances in his debut season, and is 1-2 with a 4.54 ERA, a 5.28 FIP, and 28 strikeouts against 25 walks in 39.2 innings. After a pair of great starts to open the month, Bratt has given up three runs in three innings in each of his last two games.

Several times over the past few weeks since getting promoted to High-A, members of the Eugene Emeralds staff have provided gentle reminders to Cam Maldonado that he was closing in on a 20-20 season.
"Two more homers for 20-20," they'd say, noting what Maldonado needed to notch at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in the same season. He appreciated the updates, but took it all in stride.
Still, when Eugene traveled to Everett, Washington this week for a six-game series with the AquaSox, Maldonado figured he'd have a good chance at reaching the milestone. Funko Field, after all, has a reputation as a real hitter's paradise.
It sure was for Maldonado on Thursday night.
The Wolcott product and former Hamden Hall star stepped up to the plate as the second batter of the ballgame and clubbed a two-run homer on a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall. Two innings later, on a 2-1 pitch, Maldonado led off the third with another homer to left to reach the 20-20 mark for the season.

A court in the Netherlands has sentenced a Dutch-Rwandan man to life for his involvement in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
The 66-year-old, named only as Eugene N, was accused, among other things, of throwing a hand grenade into a crowd of Tutsis who were seeking shelter in a stadium. He was convicted of war crimes and the crime of genocide, having acted with "genocidal intent", the judge said.
Rwanda had sought his extradition in 2014 but the authorities in the Netherlands then launched their own investigation into N, who had become a Dutch citizen.
In 100 days in April 1994, an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus people were killed by Hutu extremists.
The court in The Hague heard N held an authoritative position in the community at the time of the massacre, overseeing around 1,000 people in Mbazi in southern Rwanda.

NEW YORK, Aug 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar rose on Friday, extending gains to a session high after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh hinted that interest rate hikes may be needed should policymakers doubt that ‌inflation is headed back toward the central bank's 2% target.
In his debut speech at the Jackson Hole symposium of central ‌bankers, Warsh said the Fed will "have work to do" should inflation not appear to be cooling, in remarks that acknowledged financial conditions do not appear restrictive and marked the closest he has come to recognizing that interest rate hikes may be needed to ease price pressures.
Expectations for a rate hike of at least 25 basis points at the Fed's September meeting jumped to about 50% following Warsh's comments, up from about 35% before the speech.
"At least for the time being, we're getting more of the same Warsh-speak that we saw prior to any of the Fed decisions that he had been ‌a part of. Meaning he's saying a lot, ⁠but none of this seems really substantive," said Eugene Epstein, head of trading and structured products at Moneycorp in Stamford, Connecticut.

A day after the news of Dolly Parton's death broke, the president of Dollywood gave an update on the Tennessee theme park. Co-owned by Herschend and Dolly Parton Productions, the theme park welcomes roughly four million guests every season. With Parton's passing, many fans questioned the park's future, and its president has put them all at ease.
On August 26, Dollywood's official Instagram page shared an emotional video from president Eugene Naughton. "This is a really heavy day for all of us here at Dollywood Parks and Resorts," he said. "We've been dealing with the news of our Dreamer in Chief passing, and I want to speak directly to you to make sure you realize that she's alive and well here."
Naughton addressed fans' concerns about any potential changes to the park. He said, "I know a lot of people are concerned that things are going to change without Dolly being present here, and I want to **** ure you that it's not. Just know that we're all going to keep her alive here." Growing emotional, he encouraged fans to keep the legendary country musician's legacy alive in her absence.
"We're all humans, so I ask everyone to just remember that," he said. "And to honor how she would treat others; show kindness. Don't be afraid to love big. Don't be afraid to dream big. The Oklahoma Sooners are a popular pick to make the College Football Playoff. One of the more popular college football ***** ysts, Josh Pate, is continuing the trend, listing the Sooners as the 11-seed in his college football playoff predictions for the 2026 season.
Josh Pate, of the Josh Pate College Football Show, has Oklahoma heading to Eugene to face the Oregon Ducks. Pate has the Ducks beating Oklahoma, then going on to beat Georgia, and then Texas in the semifinals before falling to Miami in the national championship game.
To make the playoff, Oklahoma would likely have to go 10-2. But Pate has the Sooners in the field as a 9-3 team, which would be a first for the 12-team era.
That means the Sooners probably lose to both Georgia and Texas and maybe drop either the Ole Miss or Texas A&M game later in the season. All three of those losses would likely be to top 15 teams, certainly giving the Sooners a case for making the playoff as a 9-3 team.
"Oklahoma is the only three-loss team that I have in the playoff," Pate said. "That means your Ole Misses, your A&M's, your LSU's, they're on the outside looking in."

Samsung Electronics stock dropped 9% on Monday as the company's shareholder return plan left investors underwhelmed, with many having hoped for a more aggressive buyback commitment and clearer guidance on how remaining capital would be deployed.
Samsung announced on Friday that its total shareholder returns for the year would fall in a range of 90 trillion won to 110 trillion won ($65 billion to $80 billion), with 30 trillion won of that coming as cash dividends paid out in the third quarter. The company said its board will determine remaining payouts in January 2027, with cash dividends, share buybacks, and share cancellations all under consideration.
Despite the total being five times what Samsung returned in its prior peak year of 2020, ******* ysts said the numbers missed their projections and that the lack of detail around buyback mechanics left investors wanting more, according to Reuters.
A key complication: Samsung's ownership structure limits how much it can deploy through buybacks. Any significant buyback program risks lifting the ownership stakes of affiliates Samsung Life and Samsung Fire past the regulatory ceiling, which would then require those entities to offload shares in order to stay within the 10% combined limit. That constraint means the lion's share of the outstanding 60 trillion won to 80 trillion won is forecast to be returned via dividends, while share buybacks and cancellations together may account for just 10 trillion won to 20 trillion won, according to Reuters.
"Unlike SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics did not mention the possibility of raising its existing shareholder return policy, nor did it announce a plan to cancel treasury shares that could more directly contribute to the stock price increase, which is disappointing," Sohn In-joon, an ******* yst at Eugene Securities, said in a report cited by Reuters.

It's almost time for football in Eugene. The Oregon Ducks are wrapping up fall camp this week before preparing for the season opener against Boise State at Autzen Stadium on Sept. 5. The expectations are high with one of the most talented rosters in the country.
That sentiment was supported by USA TODAY's ranking of the top 100 college football players heading into the 2026 season. Nine Ducks landed in the rankings, the most of any program. Led by a Heisman-caliber quarterback and armed with plenty of experience in big games, Oregon is one of the frontrunners to win it all this season, but talent can only take a team so far.
The Ducks who made the list were not surprising, but there were a few notable omissions. Evan Stewart, who missed all of last season, didn't make the cut, but given how explosive his offseason has been, he figures to be a major part of the offense again this season. Nose tackle Bear Alexander also didn't make the list, despite the other three veterans up front placing highly.

Aug. 24—It's crunch time for the Spokane Indians.
Just 12 games remain in the regular season, and if they are going to play meaningful games the last week of the season — at least relative to the standings — they are going to have to make some headway this week.
To do so, they are going to have to get some better pitching. The Indians (25-28) dropped four of six to last-place Hillsboro last week, giving up 54 runs and a whopping 73 hits with 31 walks in 54 innings in the process.
Losing the series to Hillsboro didn't eliminate the Indians from postseason contention — but it won't be an easy challenge.
Entering play Tuesday, they sit five games behind first-place Eugene (30-23), but if the first-half champion Emeralds win the second half, the Indians can qualify for the playoff series by finishing second.

(NEXSTAR) – From unexpected babies to "Ozempic teeth," the ultra-popular class of GLP-1 medications is turning out to have a few unanticipated side effects. Emerging research shows the drugs, which have proven effective in treating obesity and diabetes, may also be useful in treating addiction.
The medications' full potential is coming to light as more people are prescribed a GLP-1, which includes the brand names Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy and Zepbound. As 15% of Americans say they've tried a GLP-1, researchers are learning more about how it impacts all aspects of life, not just diet.
"This drug has been available in the medical community since 2005," said Dr. Eugene Lucas, professor and coordinator of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program at Wilkes University. "And over time, when physicians are ordering these medications for people with obesity, diabetes, they're finding that if they have a concurrent addictive disorder, and specifically alcohol, that they're either cutting back or stopping their alcohol use."
A large study of more than 200,000 people in Sweden found using a GLP-1 drug was ***** ociated with a decreased risk of hospitalization from alcohol use disorder.
Another study by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine, which looked at 600,000 veterans with type 2 diabetes, found the medications were tied to a lower risk of developing any kind of substance use disorder.

The 2028 recruiting cycle is heating up, and the Oregon Ducks were name-dropped in another notable race that has heated up this summer.
Four-star offensive tackle Aden Owolabi told Rivals (subscription required) that the Ducks are an early leader in the race, alongside USC and Oklahoma. Owolabi, a 6-6 lineman from Danville, California, is ranked as the No. 52 overall recruit in the 2028 class, according to 247 Sports.
Owolabi didn't have any offers earlier in the spring, but his recruitment amped up quickly this summer. Oregon hosted Owolabi for a camp and extended him an offer in June. The Ducks are in line to host Owolabi for a visit in the fall for one of their home games.
Texas A&M offered the big offensive tackle on Sunday, continuing Owolabi's rise in the national recruiting landscape. With multiple Big Ten and SEC schools already in pursuit, Oregon's early interest could be a huge benefit in the program's attempt to keep him out west.
Oregon has had no issue pulling in elite offensive linemen on the recruiting trail under A'lique Terry's leadership, and the Ducks' approach this season with several young linemen getting into the rotation could attract more of the nation's top talent to Eugene. The Ducks currently don't have anyone committed in the 2028 class, but do have four offensive linemen committed in the 2027 class.

Former Auburn linebacker Eugene Asante is getting another opportunity in the NFL after being signed by the Arizona Cardinals on Monday.
After spending the spring with the Houston Gamblers of the United Football League, Asante impressed the Cardinals enough to add them to their preseason roster. While with the Gamblers, he collected 34 total tackles and 18 solo in nine games played. The Gamblers finished with a 4-6 record and missed the postseason. The Houston franchise will be relocated for the 2027 season.
Asante was a fan favorite while a member of the Auburn Tigers from 2022-24. While on the plains, he had 134 tackles and 13 tackles for loss along with 7.5 sacks. His best season for the Tigers was in 2023 when he had 86 tackles and five tackles for loss. He was the team's leading tackler that season. Prior to joining Auburn, be played three seasons at North Carolina before arriving as a transfer.
After his time at Auburn, Asante went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft but was signed by the Miami Dolphins. He was released by the team in late August during roster cuts. He was picked up twice during the 2025 NFL season as a practice squad player for the Cleveland Browns and the Atlanta Falcons. He will now get another chance with the Cardinals. They will play their first preseason game on Thursday when they travel to Las Vegas to matchup with the Raiders.

Aug. 10—Eugene starting pitcher Hunter Dryden had a lot of folks out to the game last week at Avista Stadium for his Spokane homecoming. They cheered so loudly when he struck out one of the hometown Indians batters that it drew looks from others in the crowd.
"I didn't get an official tally," the Deer Park High School and Whitworth University alum said. "But I think it ended up being just over 60 people, which is incredible that everybody came in and did that. That was , like , insane for them to all do that, and I'm very appreciative."
After the game, in which Dryden tossed six innings of one-run ball in an eventual 13-1 win for the Emeralds, all his visitors came down onto the field to share the moment with the 24-year-old right-hander.
"I got to give them all hugs and talked to them for a while," he said. "My little cousins wanted autographs. And then there's a few people who had left before the game ended, so I got some texts from them and talked to them and, you know, thanked them for coming."
Dryden is in the midst of his second season of professional baseball in the San Francisco Giants organization. The Giants drafted him in the 17th round of the 2024 MLB draft after his four-year career at Whitworth.

Aug. 9—Simon Rosselli has gone from a state champion to a world champion in less than three months.
And he did so Sunday afternoon in the most dramatic fashion, popping an American national record discus throw of 66.39 meters (217 feet, 9 inches) to win the World Athletics Congress U20 championship at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene.
With his gold medal around his neck and an American flag draped over his shoulders, Rosselli answered questions from the media. He was grateful to have won Sunday, but he took a few moments to express how heartbroken he was for friends and family affected by the Spokane Complex fires the past week.
The Rossellis, who live near the Autumn Lane fire off 5 Mile, were evacuated from their home Aug. 2, and they just received confirmation Sunday that their home is still standing and they can return to it when they travel back to Spokane.
"That's heavy," Rosselli said when asked about the fires. "Spokane's gone through a lot but Spokane bands together. That's what they do. We have friends who aren't out of danger yet. It's devastating.

The Arizona Cardinals placed two players on injured reserve on Saturday and had six players in for a tryout on Saturday. They have filled their two roster vacancies with two of the players they tried out.
The Cardinals announced they signed tight end Shawn Bowman and linebacker Eugene Asante.
Bowman is 6-4 and 249 pounds and has yet to play an NFL game. He went undrafted out of Rutgers in 2024 and signed with the Carolina Panthers. He spent time on their practice squad as a rookie. Most recently, he was in the UFL with the Orlando Storm. He played in 11 games and had seven catches for 53 yards.
Asante is six feet tall and 226 pounds. He went undrafted last year out of Auburn, signing originally with the Miam Dolphins. He did not make their roster and spent time on the practice squads of the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons. He played for the Houston Gamblers in the UFL in the spring. In nine games, he had 34 total tackles, four tackles for loss, two pass breakups and two forced fumbles.
Don't expect either to be guys who push for the roster. They fill the back end of the 90-man offseason roster and will see action late in the last preseason games the Cardinals have.

Aug. 8—The dream of winning a world championship is very much alive for Simon Rosselli.
On his first throw Saturday afternoon in the World Athletics Congress U20 men's discus championship, the former Mead High star met the qualifying mark for the finals, throwing 60.84 meters (about 199 feet, 7 inches) at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene.
It came on his first and only throw Saturday. By rule, once an athlete hits the qualifying standard for the finals he or she is done for the day.
The finals will feature 13 of the 29 athletes entered. Each athlete will have three attempts Sunday with the top nine moving on to the final round with three more attempts each.
"He looked really good warming up," Rosselli's coach, IronWood director TJ Crater, said. "Just a little cautious on his one competitive throw. He's ready."

Since Dan Lanning showed up in Eugene, he's repeated one mantra time and time again: "If you're good enough, you're old enough."
In 2026, the Oregon Ducks found that they had several guys who were "old enough" to contribute meaningful snaps to the team, with a long list of true freshmen having early impacts in their careers. Now, as those freshmen become sophomores and look to grow and improve, it falls on them and the coaches to expand their roles.
One of the players whose role is expanding this year is running back Dierre Hill. As a freshman, Hill was relatively unknown early on, but by midseason, offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer knew there was no other way around the fact that he had to be getting more touches.
"Dierre kind of came on midway through the season, and you see this burst down the field and it's like, 'Hey, we've got to do something with this guy,'" Mehringer said on Friday.
After putting up 793 total yards and six touchdowns, Hill is now looking to become more of a weapon as a sophomore. That means adding versatility to his game and expanding what it means to be a playmaker, not confined to the backfield. It's not just the talent Hill has that allows him to take on a bigger load, but the mental acuity, Lanning says.

And finally, AAA Sacramento outfielder Turner Hill was named Player of the Month in the Pacific Coast League, while outfielder Franco Willias earned those honors in the Dominican Summer League.

The Oregon Ducks are beginning to stack some important game day visits for the fall, and Dan Lanning just secured a visit with one of the top recruits available in the 2028 class.
Five-star edge rusher Kameron McGee has locked in four game day visits for the upcoming season, including a trip to Eugene. McGee, the No. 1 recruit in the class according to 247 Sports, will visit Autzen Stadium on Oct. 10, when the Ducks host UCLA.
Not only is the matchup important for the Ducks to get off to a good start in Big Ten play, but it's shaping up to be an important recruiting day as well. Alongside McGee, four-star athlete Jayce Halasz will also be in attendance.
Oregon will be the third visit of the fall for McGee. The pass rusher from Chicago will begin his fall visits in Tallahassee with Florida State on Sept. 7 when the Seminoles host SMU. McGee will be in Texas the following week for the Longhorns' matchup against Ohio State. After coming to Eugene, McGee currently has one more visit scheduled to Georgia on Oct. 17 when the Bulldogs host Auburn.
The 6-foot-4, 245-pound pass rusher has a terrific blend of physical and finesse rushing styles. He closes with elite speed off the edge and is a problem for offenses against the run as well. As a sophomore, McGee had 54 tackles, 21 tackles for a loss, 10.5 sacks and nine pass deflections to help Brother Rice finish with a 13-1 record and a state ***** le.

Here is the paradox at the center of Broadway economics: the production that just broke the box-office record for a filmed stage musical was not built by anyone with the authority to greenlight it. It was built over 19 years by a Vermont folk singer who kept handing control to other people.
On the last weekend of July, the live capture of Hadestown opened on fewer than 2,000 screens. It took in $10.2 million, the largest opening ever recorded for a filmed Broadway musical, ahead of Hamilton. The distributor had booked it as a five-day event. Within 72 hours it announced an indefinite run. Its strongest per-screen results came from Huntsville, Salt Lake City, Eugene, and Boise: markets with no Broadway house at all.
I have spent a career focused on how the screen reshapes commerce—as President and CEO of The Museum of Television & Radio (now The Paley Center for Media), as Harvard Law School's inaugural Visiting Professor of Entertainment and Media Law, and as a management consultant on entertainment and media industry strategies. What Anaïs Mitchell built with Hadestown is the clearest working refutation I have seen of the instinct that destroys founder-led ventures in various market sectors.
The operational reality is unforgiving. A modern Broadway musical is a highly capitalized joint venture requiring upwards of $15 million against a weekly burn rate that can approach $700,000. The people who put up that money are not patrons of the arts. They are investors, and the directors, general managers, and marketing leads they hire are the operators who convert a creative vision into a going concern. Broadway posted the highest-grossing season in its history in 2025–2026, roughly $1.9 billion, and only six new musicals opened all year. More money is chasing fewer bets.
The industry's default bet is a famous name. Elton John's Tammy Faye and the Avett Brothers' Swept Away both took that bet recently, and both closed within weeks of opening. Neither was a failure of talent. Both were failures of organizational architecture. The creative founders believed that dominance in one market guaranteed fit in another, and they overruled the operators who knew better.

There are plenty of areas of intrigue for the Oregon Ducks going into the 2026 season, but near the top of the list is the defensive line. With several players turning down a spot in the 2026 NFL Draft and choosing to return to Eugene for one more season, there's an expectation that the Ducks have one of the best defensive lines in the nation this year.
If that's going to happen, there are two players who need to stand out in particular, though. On Monday at Oregon's annual media day, both players took center stage; one much bigger than we last saw, and the other trimmed down a great deal.
Both Nasir Wyatt and Matayo Uiagalelei have been in the lab this offseason, but with different goals.
After a standout freshman year where he had 11 tackles, 7 QB pressures, 4 TFL, 3 sacks, and one forced fumble in just 39 snaps, there's been a ton of hype surrounding Wyatt ahead of Year 2. That hype is only increasing after Monday, when he divulged that he put on 20-30 pounds this offseason and is now sitting at a healthy 245 with the same quickness he became known for last year.
So long as he can keep that "power and twitch," Wyatt says that he hopes to model his game after a David Bailey or Reuben Bain, both of whom went in the first round of last year's draft despite being considered undersized edge rushers, like Wyatt.
