The S&P 500 (^GSPC) lost 0.8%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) dropped 1.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI), which includes fewer tech stocks, fell by a steeper 1.5%, or over 800 points, as oil prices rose amid renewed tensions in the Middle East.
SK Hynix's (000660.KS, SKHY) second quarter profit rose by 557% year over year, the company reported after the US market close on Tuesday. That was less than Wall Street expected, prompting concerns that the artificial intelligence boom may be slowing. In Asia, investors once again dumped chip stocks such as Samsung (005930.KS) and SK Hynix, driving the KOSPI Composite (^KS11) down nearly 6% on Wednesday.
Two "Magnificent Seven" quarterly results stand as another big catalyst for the AI trade, with reports from Microsoft (MSFT) and Meta (META) dropping after the bell. It could be a make-or-break moment for tech stocks after Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) capital expenditure guidance last week spooked markets, resurfacing fears about the AI boom's sustainability.
In the Middle East conflict, Iran launched an "attempted surprise attack" on Tuesday, according to US Central Command, reengaging fighting between the US and Iran for the first time since a pause in hostilities on Friday. Oil prices jumped, with Brent crude (BZ=F) gaining more than 7% to trade back over $90 per barrel.

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) delivered rapid optical growth on July 28, then suffered a share-price decline of more than 20% after its guidance fell short of elevated expectations. Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) also traded sharply lower. Coherent belongs in this story for a specific reason: the two companies monetize different components of the same AI data-center links.
Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) supplies the passive layer, including optical fiber, cable and dense connector systems. Coherent supplies active devices and modules, including lasers, photodiodes and 800G and 1.6T transceivers that convert electrical signals into light and back again. As clusters add accelerators, network builders need both more fiber paths and faster optical endpoints. Corning's order pace can therefore provide a partial read-through on the volume and timing of deployments that create transceiver demand for Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR). It cannot establish Coherent's market share, pricing or margins.
Corning reported second-quarter core sales of $4.74 billion, up 17% year over year, and core earnings of $0.78 a share, up 30%. Optical Communications sales increased 32% to $2.07 billion. Within that segment, Enterprise Networks grew 65%, and the company said generative-AI product sales grew significantly faster.
The disappointment came from the next quarter. Corning projected $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion of third-quarter core sales, about 16% year-over-year growth but slightly below Wall Street's expectation, according to Reuters. Optical growth also eased from 36% in the first quarter to 32% in the second. Corning had gained roughly 64% in 2026 through the prior close, leaving little room for even modest deceleration.
Coherent's own latest quarter, ended March 31, argues against treating Corning's guidance as proof of weaker Coherent operations. Revenue rose 21% to $1.81 billion, GAAP gross margin reached 37.7%, and management cited exceptionally strong data-center and communications demand while expanding capacity. Its product roadmap includes 1.6T transceivers, lasers and photodiodes for AI networks. Different customer mixes, active-component content and manufacturing yields can make its results diverge from Corning's.

What's behind the move: SK Hynix reported a record second quarter operating profit, which rose 557% from a year earlier but fell short of lofty expectations, fueling investor concerns about whether AI-related spending can sustain its rapid pace.
The earnings miss reflected a less favorable product mix rather than weakening demand for AI memory chips. Management reiterated that demand is expected to outpace supply through 2030.

Kelsey Plum's two-season tenure with the Los Angeles Sparks is likely coming to an end, per LA Times reporter Marisa Ingemi. Ingemi reported that the Sparks will most likely trade Plum by Sunday's midseason trade deadline, and that they've gotten interest from across the league.
Plum is in the midst of a historic offensive season, albeit an injury-riddled one. She's averaging 23.9 points and 6.4 **** ists, while shooting 52.7% from the field. All of those numbers are career highs. She's also shooting 38.3% from three, her highest mark since 2023. But she's appeared in just 12 of 27 games as she's dealt with an ankle and a lower leg injury. The Sparks are currently out of the playoff mix, holding a 10-17 record and losers of 6 straight games.
Plum signed a one-year, $999,999 contract ahead of the season, after being traded to LA from Las Vegas in a three-team trade that saw the Seattle Storm get the No. 2 pick (and Li Yueru), and Las Vegas acquire Jewell Loyd. While Plum has individually excelled since arriving in Los Angeles, the team missed out on the playoffs in Year 1 and appears on track to do so again.

The Atlanta Falcons began training camp without their top two quarterbacks on Wednesday morning. Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. are both battling injuries, leaving undrafted free agent Jack Strand and veteran Cooper Rush to take the 11-on-11 reps.
Penix has yet to be cleared for contact as he recovers from an ACL injury. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa is dealing with a minor undisclosed injury (reportedly a back issue). Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Tua is expected back soon but Penix's future is less clear.
The former top-10 pick out of Washington met with reporters following Wednesday's practice and said it could be a few more weeks before he is totally cleared.
"Another four weeks, probably, before going to the next stage," said Penix. "But at the same time, it could be earlier," he said. "It really just depends on how my body is going throughout this whole camp process."
The Falcons are being cautious with Penix, who's currently working back from his third career ACL injury. Even though he's been through this process before, Penix knows it's important not to rush back, as much as he might want to.

Reddit reports second-quarter earnings on July 30. Heading into the print, the stock is down about 27% year to date, and most of that damage came from one story. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Reddit had internally discussed restricting Google's access to its platform content for AI training, as renewal talks over their data-licensing deal hit friction. The stock dropped roughly 9% that day.
Reddit and Google signed a $60 million-a-year licensing agreement in 2024, letting Google train its AI models on Reddit's content. That's under 2% of Reddit's trailing revenue.
But investors reacted as if the number mattered less than the signal. If Reddit is willing to walk away from a live AI licensing partner, that raises questions about how durable the rest of Reddit's data business really is, and whether Google's AI-powered search results are already cutting into the referral traffic Reddit depends on. The Baltimore Ravens got some fantastic news on the first day of practice at training camp. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike was cleared to return after sustaining a career-threatening neck injury last season.
Madubuike was spotted in uniform ready to take part in practice Wednesday.
That's quite the development for both Madubuike and the team. After making the Pro Bowl in both 2023 and 2024, Madubuike sustained a serious neck injury during the team's Week 2 game against the Cleveland Browns last season.
Following that injury, there was concern over whether Madubuike would be able to play football again. That question lingered into April, when it was reported Madubuike underwent neck surgery that had doctors optimistic about his chances of getting back on the field in 2026.
Some cold water was thrown on that report just days before the Ravens opened training camp. On Saturday, the team placed Madubuike on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. While the team still believed Madubuike would return in 2026, it was possible the nose tackle would need some time before returning to the field.

Niclas Fullkrug has been linked with a move to Lazio as Gennaro Gattuso searches for a new number nine. The experienced 33-year-old is reportedly eager to head to Rome, yet there are a few factors hindering the deal.
Firstly, while Fullkrug has been offered up to the uncertain Biancocelesti following his loan stint with AC Milan last term, he earns €3.5 million and would have to cut his salary to return to Italy.
Second of all, the German's single goal in 20 Serie A appearances hardly makes for good reading. In fact, as Corriere dello Sport confirm, Gattuso is eyeing up a loan-to-buy move for Milan's Santi Gimenez. The risk with that, however, is that it's a deal that can only be evaluated in late August, ****** uming the striker is still with the Rossoneri after struggles of his own.

NFL teams and NFL players are not famously open and transparent about injury timelines, but Michael Penix Jr. was an exception today.
Per the team's 2025 starting quarterback, his recovery from his November ACL injury is progressing nicely, but it still could be a month until he's fully medically cleared. If all goes well, Penix noted, it could be a little sooner. Because the long end of that estimate would put us at August 29, that likely means the most hotly-anticipated battle of camp is all but over. So long as Tua Tagovailoa's back tightness is indeed minor, he'll be starting in Week 1.
When Penix suffered his ACL injury and had surgery, insider Ian Rapoport initially reported that it would carry a nine month recovery at minimum. Since then, both the team and Penix have avoided putting concrete timelines on his recovery, but mid-August would be around nine months and Penix now seems unlikely to be cleared by then.
Fans inserted their own timelines into the vacuum between Rapoport's initial report and the months that have come. Some very optimistic souls believed he could be cleared for minicamp, but that time came and went. Others hoped we might see Penix cleared in time for the start of training camp, a more reasonable guess but still a bit of an optimistic one.
On the first day of training camp, Penix was out there moving and throwing, but he still has not been fully medically cleared and cleared for full team work. The long and short of it is that Penix can do some work and give the coaching staff a measure of his ability, but cannot fully participate in training camp and almost certainly will not appear in preseason action. He'll get to build rapport with receivers because he's there and throwing—and he chucked a long touchdown to Zachariah Branch Wednesday—but obviously the work of running the offense and participating in scrimmages and the like is still a ways away.

The Chicago Bears hit the practice field at Halas Hall on Wednesday morning for the first practice of training camp under second-year head coach Ben Johnson.
It was a closed practice, but the media have started to share observations. It was a light practice that lasted less than an hour and a half to kick things off as they ramp up before the pads come on later in camp. After last year's rough start for the offense, it sounds like they're much more organized to kick camp off, and it was the defense that had some hiccups.
As far as attendance goes, it doesn't sound like there were any notable absences, outside of previously reported players on the NFI and PUP lists, including defensive end Montez Sweat, linebacker T.J. Edwards and cornerback Kyler Gordon.

After locking down a deal for Santiago Castro, it was expected that all of Tony D'Amico's efforts would turn back to finding a left wing that Gian Piero Gasperini has been yearning for. However, it appears that the next Giallorossi signing for the time being won't be Antonio Nusa or Abde Ezzalzouli to fill that need. Instead, reports indicate that Roma's next signing won't even play that far up the pitch.
In a move that came out of nowhere, Roma is expected to sign 22-year-old Greek defender Konstantinos Koulierakis of Wolfsburg. The deal was first reported by Ugo Trani of Te la do io Tokyo and is now being corroborated by Fabrizio Romano and others. The amount being bandied about is €15 million, and it's expected that Koulierakis would fill the role of vice-Hermoso.
Koulierakis is a left-footed center back who brings considerable experience for his age. He's made 59 Bundesliga appearances over the last two seasons, 35 appearances in the Greek Super League, and another 9 Europa Conference League appearances with PAOK prior to that. He's also already made 22 appearances for the Greek national team.
Koulierakis was purchased by Wolfsburg from PAOK for just under €12 million two summers ago. After proving his worth in Germany, Roma is ready to bring him to Italy to add depth to its rearguard. Perhaps most importantly, he is a left-footed defender in a back three dominated by right-footed players—aside from Hermoso, to whom Koulierakis will likely be an understudy.
Koulierakis is a fairly tall center back at 6'2" and defends well in the air. He's known for being a progressive passer, which makes him a good fit in Gasperini's system as a left-sided defender. He's also proven to be composed on the ball and comfortable defending in tight ******* es. Koulierakis has chipped in 4 goals and 3 ******* ists during his time at Wolfsburg. At just 22, he's got plenty of room for development under Gasperini's tutelage.

Any crackdown on mobile communications would add a new dimension to the conflict for the thousands of ‌U.S. troops in the region, many of whom still rely on phones to periodically message loved ones and **** ure them they are well.
Admiral Brad Cooper, in a previously unreported letter, said ‌Iran was benefiting from being able to see the success or failure of its strikes in near real-time by searching news reports or online posts by journalists referencing "reactions, photos, and footage from the cellphones of our troops."
"The direct, unavoidable cost of this open-source intelligence could be measured in the lives of American service members and civilian residents in targeted Gulf countries," Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, wrote in his July 28 letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

A Wisconsin brewery known for anti-Trump social media posts, including one promising a free beer promotion upon the death of President Donald Trump, has had its permit to operate in the state revoked by state officials.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Monday that liberal activist and brewery owner Kirk Bangstad is "vowing to fight 'tooth and nail' after receiving a letter from the state's Department of Revenue revoking Minocqua Brewing Co.'s permit to operate in Wisconsin, according to a July 26 newsletter sent to his supporters."
"As you can imagine, I'm not taking this lying down," Bangstad wrote in a Substack post on Sunday. "We're going to fight the state of Wisconsin tooth and nail, and once again, they'll have to pry me out of my taprooms before I stop selling beer to thirsty progressives who come to visit us."

FIFA will ask its 211 member ******* ociations to vote on its controversial plan to sell minority stakes in the World Cup in September, multiple outlets reported—although the plan has already been criticized by soccer governing bodies in the Americas, Asia and Europe.
FIFA confirmed plans to raise $4.2 billion for a new entity controlling the nonprofit's "commercial and event operations" at a $20 billion equity valuation.
In a deal first reported by The Times and the Financial Times, FIFA is planning to raise an estimated $4.2 billion in 2026 by selling a reported 20% minority stake in a new subsidiary at an equity valuation of $20 billion.
FIFA confirmed the plans in an announcement on Tuesday morning, which said the new company would be called FIFA Forward Enterprise and would control the nonprofit organization's "commercial and event operations."
FIFA's 211 member ******* ociations would each be given $20 million in funding if the deal goes through, the organization said, and annual funds to members would continue increasing through 2038.

Tom Brady has reportedly been in talks with WWE following a couple of viral confrontations with wrestler/influencer Logan Paul. The interactions have come with mixed receptions, with some finding it entertaining and others seeing it as cringe-worthy.
It's safe to ***** ume that NFL legend Patrick Peterson would probably fall into the latter group.
When speaking with TMZ Sports, Peterson shot down the idea of Brady partaking in the world of professional wrestling.

The NCAA ruled that San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello committed a minor infraction as Tennessee baseball coach in 2022, according to an athletics department document obtained by Knox News through a public records request.
It's a belated decision.
Vitello left UT to become the Giants manager in October 2025. And the violation was committed during his recruitment of Kansas transfer shortstop Maui Ahuna, who now plays for the Giants' Double-A team in Richmond, Virginia.
This was the second violation reported that involved Vitello and Ahuna. The first appeared on a 2022 report, which found that UT booked a flight for Ahuna's recruiting visit before receiving his academic transcript.
The combination of the two violations led to Vitello's three-game suspension in the 2023 season and Ahuna missing eight games before he was ruled eligible.

After leading the United States men's national team to its best World Cup finish in two decades, Mauricio Pochettino is likely sticking around to finish what he started. The USMNT head coach is "close" to finalizing a deal with the USMNT that would keep him under contract through the 2030 World Cup, according to The Athletic.
Financial terms of the deal — which has not been finalized just yet — are not known at this time.
Pochettino had been reportedly offered a four-year extension partway through a 2026 World Cup run during which the team won their group, scored more goals than they had in any previous tournament and picked up their first knockout win in 24 years. Pochettino's current contract was set to expire now that this summer's tournament is over.
Pochettino was hired by the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) in 2024 to take over after two failed Gregg Berhalter stints. Typically, federations try to hire international managers for a full World Cup cycle, which is every four years. But USSF's choice to re-hire (and later re-fire) Berhalter shortened the window by the time the federation landed on Pochettino to take over.
Still, in just two years, Pochettino was able to build one of the strongest U.S. squads in decades, capitalizing on the talent currently in the U.S. roster pool and putting unlikely players in the position to thrive. Though Pochettino did his best to downplay the USMNT's chances, hopes sailed high for the team coming out of the group stage.

Florian Plettenberg reports that Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima's move to Palace has collapsed. The two sides failed to reach an agreement on the final contractual details despite discussing a total package worth as much as €30 million. Matsima will be remaining in the Bundesliga for now.
The proposed deal reportedly collapsed because Augsburg and Palace remained apart on the structure of the payments and performance-related bonuses. Matsima and his representatives have already been informed that the move will not proceed.
The 24-year-old will now return to first-team duties and travel with Augsburg to their training camp on Saturday. Sky notes that Matsima behaved professionally throughout the negotiations.
Palace initially reached personal terms with Matsima before raising an earlier €20 million bid to €25 million. Augsburg nevertheless remained determined to secure the major profit long anticipated for the defender, whom they purchased permanently from Monaco for approximately €5 million.
Matsima developed into one of Augsburg's most important defensive players and later signed a contract extension through 2030. A serious thigh injury in January interrupted his progress, though he returned during the closing stages of last season.

Chelsea has been busy this summer. The Stamford Bridge club has broken its transfer record to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa with Marco Palestra also joining from Atalanta and Geovany Quenda coming in from Sporting CP. Chelsea has clearly altered its strategy ahead of the 2026/27 season.

It is a sign of the times ... literally. Advertisements dominate our daily viewing more than we may realize. Depending on the day, the average person will see between 4,000 and 10,000 advertisements. Ohio State fans will be adding one more to that list, as it was announced earlier today that the Buckeye Athletic Department has entered into an agreement with Chase Bank and will wear a jersey patch on all of its uniforms. The reported agreement will give OSU another $17 million to play with per year.
As you can imagine, there were some passionate responses to seeing the scarlet and gray uniform become a walking billboard. Some see it as a necessary evil in today's name, image and likeness arms race, while others, holding tight to tradition, were not so forgiving. Some fan bases decided to get on their high horse only to find out their school made a similar deal just hours later. Love it or hate it, this is what collegiate sports are turning into.

An arrest for suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated put NFL broadcaster and former QB Tony Romo in the headlines on Friday, less than two months before he's set to return to the CBS booth alongside Jim Nantz.
Romo was arrested Thursday night in Milwaukee and now reportedly plans to keep a "low profile" for the remainder of the offseason before diving back into his broadcasting work in September.
Video of the arrest was released for the first time on Tuesday, showing Romo's interactions with police and his sobriety tests.

In a major development, London-based streaming platform DAZN will have a major hand in distributing local NBA broadcasts to fans next season.
According to a report by Austin Karp in Sports Business Journal, "DAZN is close to acquiring full exclusive local broadcast rights next season" for five NBA teams formerly under contract with Main Street Sports Group, owner of the now-defunct FanDuel Sports Networks. Those teams are the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and Memphis Grizzlies. Additionally, DAZN is close to securing streaming-only arrangements with the Orlando Magic and "possibly" the Charlotte Hornets.
DAZN will also overtake what is now known as the Gotham Sports app, a joint streaming venture between YES Network and MSG Networks that sells access to local broadcasts for seven New York-area franchises — the Yankees, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, and Sabres.
The news is a culmination of DAZN's nearly year-long effort to break into the local sports broadcast market in the United States. After initially considering a lifesaving merger or acquisition of Main Street, DAZN instead chose to allow the company to collapse and attempt to court local rights for franchises independently. The streamer initially struck out on every MLB team following Main Street's collapse, but is now set to own streaming rights for at least nine NBA clubs, with the possibility of adding the Washington Wizards as a tenth under a non-exclusive streaming deal, per Sports Business Journal.
With the NBA looking to launch a centralized local streaming hub ahead of the 2027-28 season, DAZN will reportedly sign deals that are either one season in length or have mutual opt-out clauses following the upcoming season as teams demand the flexibility to join the league's aggregated local rights solution when it launches. If DAZN or a team invokes an opt-out clause, it will reportedly pay a termination fee unless, in the team's case, DAZN fails to meet certain performance metrics.

Arsenal have reportedly been monitoring Jurrien Timber closely after he underwent a minor operation on a groin issue weeks ago. ******* nal manager Mikel Arteta already has fitness headaches to deal with at the Emirates Stadium club ahead of next season. The Gunners boss will be without William Saliba when the 2026-27 campaign kicks off, and Timber will be desperate to return to action for the North London club before the end of pre-season.
The Netherlands international defender missed the World Cup as a result of the injury but has been training with the ******* nal team so far. However, he has yet to make a full return and it is unknown if he will be available for their first pre-season fixture against Girona on Saturday.
