ESPN's Bill Barnwell recently went team by team projecting each franchise's realistic Hall of Fame candidates, and while several 49ers stars fared well, one veteran was tabbed as unlikely to reach Canton.
Barnwell explained his approach before sorting players into five tiers: players that are in, on the cusp, need to keep it up, have work to do and will be missing out on the Hall of Fame, based on historical comparables rather than personal opinion on merit.
San Francisco had plenty of representation across the spectrum. Barnwell listed receiver Mike Evans, running back Christian McCaffrey and tackle Trent Williams as locks, while tight end George Kittle and linebacker Fred Warner landed in the "on the cusp" group. Edge rusher Nick Bosa and quarterback Brock Purdy were tabbed as having "work to do" but remain on a promising trajectory.
Fullback Kyle Juszczyk, however, fell into the "missing out" category despite a decorated career in the Bay Area.
Juszczyk will be a fascinating case to see whether that keeps up, given that he just earned his 10th consecutive Pro Bowl nod in 2025. Of course, while Juszczyk is a good player, it's fair to wonder whether he's racking up Pro Bowl appearances by virtue of being the most conspicuous player at a position where there simply aren't many others, just as Mike Alstott became a six-time Pro Bowler with the Bucs. Juszczyk plays only about half of the offensive snaps in a typical game, and it seems telling that the 49ers were willing to cut him this offseason before re-signing him, saving about $500,000 in the process. I'd be a little surprised if he made it in just given how the league has valued fullbacks.

"On the cusp: WR Justin Jefferson," Barnwell writes. "... There will be plenty of competition at wide receiver in the years to come, but ***** uming Jefferson bounces back from an uneven 2025 season with better QB play, he's only another year or two away from earning his plaque."

ESPN's Bill Barnwell projects that Jordan is "on the cusp" of making the Hall of Fame, and just one more solid season in 2026 would likely have him en route to the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
"On the cusp: Cameron Jordan," Barnwell writes. "I could see an argument that Jordan has already done enough to get in after a 10.5-sack season in 2025, and even a six-sack season in 2026 would surely be enough to get him over the hump."

Lazio are on the cusp of terminating their collaboration with their main shirt sponsor, Polymarket, who failed to lift their ban.
Last April, the two parties announced an agreement until June 2028 that saw the American company's brand immediately displayed on the front of the Biancocelesti's jersey. However, this partnership has been plagued by an unexpected development, with the Italian authorities recently blacklisting Polymarket and shutting down its website for providing unsanctioned betting services.
The New York-based company lodged an appeal at Italy's administrative court (TAR), arguing that its activity as a prediction market doesn't fall under the betting umbrella, and making a clear distinction between the two.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via Calcio e Finanza), the TAR has rejected Polymarket's urgent appeal, explaining that the case requires a thorough examination. Therefore, the final ruling on the matter could arrive in the coming months.
In the meantime, the collaboration between Lazio and Polymarket appears to be dead in the water. The Roman newspaper understands that the parties have already agreed to terminate the contract, which will be formalised and officially announced in the coming hours.

An ongoing dispute over access to the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of world oil and natural gas supply is shipped, is causing prices to surge. This is a boon for South America's oil industry, particularly Suriname's emerging petroleum boom, which was delayed by conflicting drilling results and seismic data. The former Dutch colony is on the cusp of becoming South America's next major oil-producing nation.
Since 2019, Suriname's government in the capital Paramaribo has hungrily eyed Guyana's booming petroleum sector, which delivered a massive economic windfall for the former British colony. Five major oil discoveries in offshore Block 58, which started in 2020 with the Maka Central-1 exploration well, confirmed the presence of commercially exploitable hydrocarbons in Suriname's portion of the offshore Guyana-Suriname Basin.
After a series of delays, beginning in 2022, due to mismatched drilling results and seismic data along with a high gas-to-oil ratio, TotalEnergies, the operator of Block 58, approved a final investment decision (FID). TotalEnergies, which holds a 50% working interest in offshore Block 58, and 50% partner APA Corporation approved the development of the deepwater GranMorgu project. This changed the project's ownership structure. Forty percent was retained by the operator TotalEnergies with another 40% retained by APA, and the remainder granted to Staatsolie.
The state-controlled energy company's acquisition was in accordance with Staatsolie's rights set out in the production-sharing contract (PSC) for Block 52. The company used a $1.6 billion loan from a banking consortium and a March 2025 bond issue to finance the acquisition. Staatsolie's share of GranMorgu will multiply the earnings delivered to Paramaribo, which has been battling an economic crisis since 2021. Indeed, the situation was so severe that rioting engulfed parts of the capital and parliament was stormed by protestors in 2023.
GranMorgu, which will come online in 2028, is a game changer for an economically challenged Suriname. The project's floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO) vessel, on completion, will have capacity of 220,000 barrels per day.

Attacking midfielder Kerim Alajbegovic arrived at Caselle Airport on Saturday afternoon, and reportedly headed straight to J Medical for his medical. The Bosnian international was accompanied by his countryman and former Juve midfielder Miralem Pjanic.
Alajbegovic, who won't turn 19 until September, has already been capped 14 times by Bosnia and Herzegovina, scoring twice, including against Qatar in the group stage of the World Cup this summer. He played at RB Salzburg last year, scoring 13 times in 44 games in all competitions. That prompted Bayer Leverkusen to buy him back from the Austrian side, looking to make a quick profit on excellent professional debut. The job market has been a tough sell for many Gen Z graduates, with tariffs, economic uncertainty, and artificial intelligence reshaping hiring plans across corporate America.
But according to Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang, the next wave of six-figure opportunities won't be found in a Wall Street cubicle or Silicon Valley Slack channel. Instead, high-paying careers will partially come by picking up a wrench—literally.
As tech giants race to build sprawling data centers—totaling $7 trillion in global capital outlays by the end of the decade—Huang believes the world is on the cusp of what he calls the "largest infrastructure build-out in human history," which will create "a lot of jobs."
"It's wonderful that the jobs are related to tradecraft, and we're going to have plumbers and electricians and construction and steelworkers," he said in conversation with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January.
The hands-on skills needed to construct what he described as chip, computer, and AI factories are already facing shortages—even though many roles pay over $100,000 without requiring a college degree. One McKinsey report estimated that between 2023 and 2030, there will be a need for an additional 130,000 trained electricians—as well as 240,000 construction laborers and 150,000 construction supervisors—in the U.S. alone.

Were it not for Brian Rolapp's disinclination to even mention LIV Golf, you'd be forgiven for thinking the PGA Tour's CEO had spent the past week trolling his opposite number with a carpet bombing campaign of upbeat commercial announcements.
On Monday, the Tour said that Sompo, an insurance company, will sponsor an event next season and an elite Championship Series tournament starting in 2028. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Travelers will level up to the same tier. Wednesday brought news that Sentry will underwrite another of the silk-stocking stops. On Thursday, the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard was added to the public list of tournaments comprising the Tour's premier schedule. (Friday was seemingly a day of rest for sales and marketing folks at the GloHo.) Each announced tournament has a $20 million purse, though total fees incurred by sponsors run closer to $30 million.
By comparison, LIV Golf's CEO, Scott O'Neil was silent since he had no good news to share and presumably little enthusiasm for addressing damaging speculation swirling around his business. One claim — amplified by his own players — is that the team finale scheduled for August 27 to 30 in Michigan will be canceled. Then came a cautionary rumor that it might happen after all, despite no build-out having commenced at the venue. A report followed that LIV is on the cusp of signing investors to keep it afloat into 2027, an infusion pegged at $250-$300 million, or about a quarter of what the Saudis have been torching annually for the past few years. Lastly, there was renewed anticipation of a bankruptcy filing as a step toward realigning the league's financial obligations.
No wonder the PGA Tour was so eager to position itself as surging in the right direction just as its antagonist is battling the narrative that it's in a death spiral. Whether both circuits remain on their respective trajectories is another matter.
Rolapp clearly has traction with sponsors to finance the Championship Series of a restructured PGA Tour, though it's possible some incumbents were offered a friends-and-family discount rather than asked for the full $30 million.

40 days out from playing against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish inside Lambeau Field, the Wisconsin Badgers are on the cusp of a program-defining year.
It'll be head coach Luke Fickell's fourth year as the lead man in Madison. When Fickell first came to Wisconsin in 2022, so did lofty expectations of what the program could achieve with him at the helm. But a 17-21 record in three seasons has left Wisconsin as a shell of the program it once was.
2026 may be Fickell's last chance to prove he's the right man for the job, especially with the increased financial investment into the program and the arrival of a new Athletic Director.
In order for the Badgers to right the ship, they'll need to find out who the most valuable players are on their roster. For this ranking, value will be defined by how much a player's absence would impact Wisconsin's chances of winning.

The amount of young talent in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization is filling up quickly. CapWages has 21 players on Pittsburgh’s reserve list for unsigned drafted players and the team has 22 others under contract that will be playing in the pro ranks next season. Once upon a time, finding 25 players to even rank was a tall task, now there are some decent enough names that won’t draw a mention at all for this year’s list considering that there are over 40 options between signed players and the reserve list. Today hopes to appease that with an honorable mention of five players on the cusp of making the list, all of whom show the potential to be ranked next year with favorable upcoming seasons.
Earlier in the week we kicked off Top 25 Under 25 season by looking at the players that won’t be a part of this year’s list due to aging out, being traded or otherwise leaving the organization. As a loose rule, we’re saying for now that 2019 draftees like Elmer Soderblom (who turned 25 earlier this summer) and Nick Robertson (who has his 25th birthday in September) are ineligible this year. 2020 draftees that are under the age of 25 currently, like Hendrix Lapierre and Joel Blomqvist meet the cut-off as fair game this year.
The top 25 under 25 series was a staple within the SBN Hockey blogs a decade ago, around here it’s morphed into what I like to think about as a snapshot in time for value and importance within the organization. It’s not meant to be purely predictive of which player may be the best pro in three, five or seven years but show how the young players currently stack up against one another.
In many ways it’s an impossible task, and a very subjective one. How does one weigh a 24-year old that figures to have a short leash at making an NHL impact (like a Phil Tomasino or Sam Poulin last year) against a fresh-faced 18 year old that was just drafted and doesn’t figure to turn pro for several years? Not to mention everything in between. It’s certainly a balancing act where guaranteed contributions to the NHL level count for something, even with the real possibility of a short shelf life and some projections also have to be taken into account for expected/hoped for futures.
Since this is a value-based snapshot in time, another handy tool may be to consider a hypothetical trade. If you **** ume a trade is going to happen and the other side wants either prospect X or young player Y to finalize the deal, which **** et would the organization be better off holding onto? The answer to that judgement can go a long way towards determining where the young players will slot in against each other for this list, though it isn’t a strict rule of thumb since some player profiles (puck moving defenseman) might have more trade value than organizational value than other spots (goalie, small winger). That consideration is at least some factor in aligning the rankings.

This time last year the young and talented Motherwell youngster Lennon Miller was a reported Celtic target, only for the highly regarded midfielder to go and crush any hopes the Celtic supporters had of seeing him in the hoops when he signed for Serie A side Udinese in a £4.5 million plus deal.
Miller who just missed out on a place in the Scotland World Cup squad has impressed at the Italian side, making 26 appearances, and scoring one goal in all competitions in his debut campaign.
In my opinion, he's a player Celtic should still be interested in, as we look to bolster our midfield, an area which will be ever so weaker come the start of the new Scottish Premiership campaign, due to the impending departures of Arne Engels, and Reo Hatate.

Whether it was a longtime supporter or hopping on the bandwagon, everyone was all in on it. The renewed American dream of World Cup glory – all happening right at home.
It didn't long for that dream to turn into a nightmare – and one an entire nation couldn't escape.
"Today wasn't a good day," said midfielder Tyler Adams.

SEATTLE — The United States men's national team is on the cusp on one of its deepest runs in its World Cup history.
The stakes continue to rise for USMNT as it goes through the 2026 World Cup knockout round, facing Belgium in the round of 16 on Monday, July 6. History was already achieved when the U.S. beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 for its first knockout round win in more than two decades, and there will be another drought USMNT will attempt to snap at Lumen Field. Winning two knockout round matches is something it has never done in a single World Cup tournament.
Besides continuing the dream of World Cup glory on American grass, there is also plenty of history at stake for the U.S.
Like it did in the round of 32, the U.S. is trying to do something it hasn't done in 24 years.

Jul. 1—Former Gonzaga and Spokane Indians pitcher Gabriel Hughes was called up to make his MLB debut by the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Hughes will be the 33rd Gonzaga alum to appear in the majors.
Hughes is 2-1 with a 5.31 ERA in nine appearances with Triple-A Albuquerque this season overall, but in 15 2/3 innings over three starts since returning from a muscle injury on his side he has allowed no runs and struck out 16 while giving up just four hits and five walks.
Earlier this season Hughes, 25, made a two-start rehab appearance with the Indians. He threw a total of six innings and allowed no runs on two hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts.
"It's nice knowing that I'm on the cusp," he told The Spokesman-Review in early June. "But obviously I'm not where I want to end up. There is still more that I want to accomplish in this game."
Hughes was a star player for the Zags from 2020-22, earning first team all-American honors in his junior year after recording 138 strikeouts, the second highest total in a single season by a Gonzaga pitcher. He was selected in the first round of the 2022 MLB draft by the Rockies, making history as the highest drafted player in Gonzaga history when he was selected 10th overall.
