Kicking off the news cycle on Wednesday was word that Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson and Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs are sitting out their team's respective practices as they seek long-term extensions. The week has already brought several market-setting contracts, including a four-year deal worth up to $160 million for Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter and a two-year, $62.2 million extension for Browns cornerback Denzel Ward.
And on Thursday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield expressed disappointment at the team not coming to an agreement on a contract extension. Late Thursday, one team did come to a deal with an old friend, as the San Francisco 49ers brought back Deebo Samuel on a reported one-year deal.
Fans around the league continue to await answers to a number of questions as training camps kick off, from who will win out the biggest quarterback battles (Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders? Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy?) to which of the league's new head coaches will find success in their new roles.

Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as a plausible destination for Marcus Rashford as his Manchester United future moves further out of view, with talkSPORT reporting that an offer in the region of £30 million may be enough to secure a deal this summer.
That figure alone will catch attention across the market. Rashford remains a high-profile name, an England international with elite-level experience and a recent campaign on loan at Barcelona that produced respectable numbers, 14 goals and 11 ******* ists in 49 appearances. Yet the wider context matters. Barcelona declined to make the move permanent and instead committed £69 million to Anthony Gordon, leaving Rashford needing a new solution.
The key point here is that both player and club appear to be working towards a clean break. A reintegration at Old Trafford is not thought to be under consideration, which places the emphasis firmly on finding a buyer capable of meeting a transfer fee and absorbing a significant salary.
Arsenal have previously been mentioned, but the latest indication is that Tottenham may represent the more realistic north London option. As stated on talkSPORT, "I think if he goes anywhere in London, I'm keeping an eye on Tottenham," before the suggestion followed, "I could see that deal happening. "Nobody is selling football," FIFA said in a statement hitting back at widespread criticism over a plan to allow private investors to acquire stakes in upcoming World Cup tournaments.
"This is not something FIFA would ever entertain." In a statement, FIFA said all of its member **** ociations should have a chance to consider the plan, calling for an "open and democratic" consultation.
But it appeared to back off from establishing a public equity entity, the so-called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), if all member countries do not agree. It was not immediately clear, however, how the process would proceed in substance.
The Union of European Football **** ociations (UEFA) had threatened to boycott the World Cup over Infantino's plan on Thursday afternoon. Soon after, the football federations of CONCACAF (North and Central America), also voiced their unanimous opposition to the plan.
UEFA and CONCACAF comprise of 55 and 41 member **** ociations respectively. The total number of member **** ociations under FIFA is 211, and the plan would need to be approved by a simple majority in order to pass.

The post was originally written in response to a Vox article warning Millennials were unprepared for a coming elder-care crisis, and its resurgence this July coincided with the symbolic milestone of the first Boomers turning 80.
As the Wall Street Journal reported, citing demographer William Frey of the Brookings Institution, roughly 4 million Baby Boomers will hit that age this year, the first wave of a 76 million-strong generation. Commenters piled on with grievances about housing costs, student debt, and a dismantled social safety net, arguing their refusal to provide care is simply "a consequence" of decisions Boomers made.
It reads like generational war. But the data shows something quite different is actually happening in most American homes.
Far from opting out, Millennials are quietly becoming a caregiving generation almost by default. Hugo Larsson sees no reason to leave Eintracht Frankfurt this summer. The Swedish midfielder was previously very close to leaving the club for the Saudi Pro League, but he has now ruled out any possibility for this summer.

The 22-year-old missed out on playing at the World Cup as Sweden's coach Graham Potter omitted him in an unexpected decision. Larsson scored 10 goals in 119 appearances for the Eagles since joining them from Malmo.
The central midfielder also discussed his preferences in terms of playing position. "I already noticed at the start of the last season that my role would change. I was more of a number six. That's not how I became so successful in this club.

In 2026, about a third of U.S. adults have $0 saved for emergencies. People in this group often feel like they're just bad with money. However, you should keep in mind that we're all facing factors beyond our control. Between inflation, high medical costs, and challenges in the job market, many Americans are finding it difficult or even impossible to save money.
It's difficult to say exactly how many Americans have $0 in savings, since different sources cite different figures.
One survey from Empower found that 32% of respondents reported they had no emergency savings. And 39% said rising prices are the biggest roadblock to saving for a rainy day.
Meanwhile, a Yahoo Finance and Marist poll put the number of Americans without savings higher; 35% of respondents said their savings would not last them a full month if they lost income.

Michael Olise's meteoric rise has transformed him from one of Europe's most exciting young wingers into a player that virtually every elite club would love to have. Baresi spent his entire 20-year playing career with the club from 1977 until he retired in 1997, winning six Serie A ******* les and three European Cups/Champions Leagues.
Regarded as one of the greatest defenders to play the game, Baresi captained Milan for 15 seasons, making 719 appearances and scoring 33 goals.
He was capped 81 times by Italy and was part of the squad which won the 1982 World Cup. He played and was captain in the 1994 final, which Italy lost to Brazil.
In 2020, Baresi became honorary vice-president of AC Milan, with the club retiring his number six shirt four years later.

Regional banks have spent 2026 rebuilding the credibility they lost in 2023, when panicked customers withdrew large sums of money. The Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts have eased the funding costs, and loan growth is picking up again across the Southeast and Mid-South regions. First Horizon Corporation (NYSE:FHN), the Memphis-based lender, which benefits directly from this regional banking recovery, just got a very public nudge from Jim Cramer – the Mad Money host. In the lightning round on July 27, Jim endorsed First Horizon, calling it "a terrific stock, very inexpensive".

Cramer's call on the stock comes two weeks after First Horizon released its second quarter results. The print indicated net income of $260 million, up 12% year-over-year, and EPS of $0.54, beating the $0.53 consensus by a penny. Adjusted EPS saw a 20% year-over-year growth. The company's revenue was in line with the estimates, reaching $887 million. Aside from financial growth indicators, the underlying trends also showed improved performance. Loans saw a growth of roughly $2 billion year-over-year while deposits went up by $1.6 billion sequentially, and the bank's return on equity climbed over 15%.
Even amid these numbers, Cramer's framing does not accurately capture the true position of First Horizon. The company trades at 1.77 times tangible book value, 10% above its own 10-year average. Shares are up 13.14% over the past year and sit near $25.40 currently. These numbers do not reflect a discounted regional bank. They represent a bank that the market has already pushed toward the top of its peer group. In other words, Cramer's "buy" is not a bargain call, but a bet that strong profits justify a premium price.
Higher deposit costs resulted in a slight slippage in net interest margins, while overall expenses grew alongside loan growth. Nevertheless, credit quality stayed resilient, showing only modest increases in loan losses. The company also engaged in aggressive stock buybacks, shrinking the total share count by nearly 7% over the past year, which ended up lifting the earnings per share. Short float of 2.73% down from 3.50% the previous month, indicates that bearish market traders are exiting their negative positions.

The Turner Building Cost Index rose 5.2% year over year in the second quarter, providing further evidence that construction costs are increasing on an annual basis, even as monthly numbers offered a momentary reprieve.
The construction cost yardstick from New York City-based Turner Construction, the industry's largest contractor by revenue, increased 1.4% from the first quarter as high-growth sectors drove demand for both labor and materials, according to a July 24 news release.
"Demand remains strongest in data centers, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, and mission-critical facilities, particularly in the Midwest and Southeast," Attilio Rivetti, Turner's vice president responsible for compiling the index, said in the release. "The industry's biggest challenge continues to be the availability of skilled Mechanical and Electrical labor."
Monthly costs have whipsawed recently. In June, nonresidential input costs decreased 1.1% month over month, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But that dip came after a 2.6% month-over-month surge in May, a jump that helped spur the fastest annual increase since the pandemic.

Thibodeaux is best known for recording 11.5 sacks in the 2023 season, but he has also put up solid numbers in passes defensed, particularly early in his career. The 25-year-old recorded five passes defensed as a rookie in 2022 and four in 2023.
Following a down year in 2025 with New York, Thibodeaux will again be a heavily utilized member of the Giants' edge rusher rotation under Harbaugh. That role will require him to disrupt opposing quarterbacks in the passing lanes next season.

NASCAR's first-ever In-Season Challenge appears to have accomplished exactly what the sport and its newest broadcast partner hoped it would.
TNT Sports released new audience data this week highlighting strong growth throughout its five-race stretch of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season, pointing to gains across television, streaming and younger audiences during the inaugural tournament.
The numbers offer an early indication that NASCAR's newest midseason competition resonated with fans while helping TNT build momentum during its first year back as a Cup Series broadcaster.
According to TNT Sports, coverage across TNT, truTV and HBO Max reached 16.6 million total viewers over the five-race In-Season Challenge, marking a 43% increase compared to 2025.
The network also reported its five Cup Series broadcasts averaged 2.0 million viewers. Excluding the weather-affected EchoPark Speedway race in Atlanta, which aired after a three-hour, nine-minute delay and produced the latest Cup Series finish in seven years, average viewership climbed to 2.2 million, an increase of more than 2.1 million viewers over the comparable races last season.

Barak Bachar and Lior Refaelov say Maccabi Haifa has learned from last season and rebuilt its squad, staff and training structure for the new campaign.
Maccabi Haifa had a rough season last year as they finished in fifth place in league play and missed out on competing in European qualifiers. Along with the disappointing results, the supporters were unhappy, to say the least, with how the campaign had been managed from top to bottom.
The Greens have already endured an 0-2 start to the new 2026/27 season, losing their first two Toto Cup games, 3-2 in the Haifa derby and then 3-0 to Kiryat Shmona. However, despite the losses, Haifa believes it has plenty to build on after holding its season-opening press conference at the Kfar Galim Training Center. Head coach Barak Bachar and sports director Lior Refaelov spoke about how they view the upcoming campaign after experiencing a season well below the club's lofty standards.
"It's great to begin anew," Bachar began. "We had a couple of very tough seasons, and we needed to learn from what went wrong. We also had to make some serious changes, both at our training center in Kfar Galim and with our staff. We know that we will be judged by our results. We wanted to bring in players with a specific profile for the club, and we feel that we found the right players, but of course we will only know for sure once we are on the pitch."
"There are times when you need to know how to make changes, and that's what we did. We brought in some new coaches who can raise the standards of our training sessions, and being able to work with Lior Refaelov off the pitch now after he played under me a number of years ago means we can really help build this club back up. We both know what it means to be a part of Maccabi Haifa, and we will do our best to create the right system and procedures. We put all of our failures on the table after last season, and we knew what we needed to do together to begin making the necessary changes."

Seattle Seahawks star Sam Darnold was money in the clutch last season.
Pro Football Focus appraised Darnold as being the fourth highest-graded quarterback in clutch situations in 2025, defined as situations where teams trail by 14 points or fewer, or hold a lead of eight points or fewer in the fourth quarter or overtime, excluding garbage time, among players with at least 45 dropbacks.
"Darnold ranked among the NFL's top five quarterbacks in several key efficiency metrics, including accurate throw rate (73.3%, third), negatively graded play rate (8.9%, fifth) and yards per attempt (8.4, fifth)," PFF's Mark Chichester said. "The combination of accuracy, efficiency and ball security helped produce one of the strongest clutch seasons of any quarterback in 2025."
The Seahawks were able to win the Super Bowl at the end of last season thanks in part to Darnold's ability to deliver in big moments down the stretch throughout the year, which helped them reach the NFL's biggest stage to begin with. The USC product's elite arm and sound decision making late helped him established himself as a quarterback capable of winning games in a variety of ways last season.

One key difference between Senate negotiators and the conferences still holding out on proposed legislation to regulate college sports is whether language in the bill would truly create a "hard salary cap" that would eliminate many third-party payments that have sent roster costs skyrocketing.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, the chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and cosponsor of the bill, sent out a social media post that said "The cap is a hard cap. Full stop. That loophole is closed."
But the refusal by the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference to sign off on changes to the Protect College Sports Act during a frenzied week of negotiating is a sign that they do not agree with Cruz's ***** sment and would like to see stronger language in the bill.
The Senate broke for the weekend late Thursday without taking action on the bill. It goes on vacation next Friday and the likelihood of the bill reaching a vote before then has grown slim.
One of the key concessions made over the past week was the addition of an up to $27.5 million (up from $25 million) "retention pool" that could be used to keep players on rosters. It would be added to the $21.3 million salary cap already in place to make the new number $48.8 million.

After an opening practice mostly defined by the new-look Eagles offense showing some encouraging signs, things were much more even between the offense and defense on Thursday. I usually attribute "muddy" practices where you don't have as many notes to a strong defensive line causing more broken-down plays, but the Eagles' secondary also deserves plenty of credit for the number of passing plays that wound up with scrambles or check downs to the flat.
What did stand out amidst the stalemate were two of the players central to it: DeVonta Smith and Quinyon Mitchell. Smith got the better of Mitchell on consecutive plays early in practice, the first coming on a slant route where he beat Mitchell to the inside for Hurts to find him in rhythm. The next play, Smith broke toward the sideline and made a nice, leaping catch over Mitchell and seemed to get his feet in bounds along the sideline, although his defensive teammates in close proximity protested the catch.
Seeing these flashes from Smith when matched up against Mitchell isn't an entirely new phenomenon, but Mitchell's most competitive moments in each of his first two training camps came against A.J. Brown, not Smith. And, as we're evaluating whether Smith is truly ready to step into a No. 1 receiver role for the Eagles this season, being able to create separation against an All-Pro cornerback who so seldom allows it on Sundays is an important box to check.

The Seattle Seahawks have some big contract decisions coming up on their big defensive tackles. While time is on their side regarding Byron Murphy II, who isn't even extension eligible until next offseason, this year is the last of Leonard Williams' three-year contract. Williams confirmed that extension talks have been opened, but he didn't go into any real details beyond that.
If you're already antsy regarding the future of one of Seattle's most important players, perhaps this will put you at ease. In a guest appearance on Daily Puck Drop with Jason Puckett, longtime NFL insider Mike Garofalo indicated that a deal is imminent. How imminent? We shouldn't be worrying about it by the time the Seahawks hang their latest Super Bowl banner.
"It is going to be a big number," Garofalo said. "It'll be before Week 1, I'll put it to you like that, and it's going to be a big number from my understanding.
"A lot of teams now are playing defenses that are really relying upon defensive tackles. The Eagles paid both of their guys [Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis] a combined $64 million per year at defensive tackle. It used to be the defensive ends were getting all the money—I mean DTs got paid along the way, but now it's like really big money for these guys because a lot of these defenses, particularly the Eagles, rely upon these defensive tackles to create havoc up front. Same for the Seahawks and what they're doing."
Garofalo is referencing Jalen Carter's $38 million/year extension, which makes him (for now) the highest paid defensive tackle in the league. Jordan Davis' contract extension was three years for $78 million, or $26 million/year.

But the focus must be on the upcoming clash with Dundee United, as a victory on the road should boost the Gers ahead of their crucial Europa League qualifier against Jagiellonia Białystok.
Although their most recent encounter finished 4-2 in favour of Rangers, a last-gasp spot-kick from Nedim Bajrami saw them escape defeat when they clashed heads in Dundee back in December.
