The Iowa State men's basketball team's trip to the Phog in March 2027 is going to get an even bigger spotlight.
The Cyclones are slated to make one appearance on ESPN's "Big Monday" during the upcoming season, when they go on the road to Phog Allen Fieldhouse to face the Kansas Jayhawks on March 1, 2027. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT in Lawrence.
ESPN started its "Big Monday" showcase in 1987. This season, beginning Feb. 1, 2027, ESPN will highlight some of the top matchups in the ACC and Big 12 through the final Monday of the regular season. The Iowa State-Kansas game at Allen Fieldhouse will round out the "Big Monday" slate for the 2026-27 season.
Last season, the Cyclones and Jayhawks split the regular-season series. Kansas won the first meeting at Allen Fieldhouse, 84-63, on Jan. 13. The Cyclones comfortably evened the series with a 74-56 victory on Feb. 14 at Hilton Coliseum.
Kansas is coming off of a 24-11 season. It lost on a buzzer-beater in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to St. John's. The Jayhawks reloaded through the transfer portal and secured the No. 1 overall high school recruit. Freshman 6-foot-7 wing Tyran Stokes was the consensus top recruit for the 2026 class and he's already on the top of several 2027 NBA mock drafts.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava and the USC Trojans host the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at the LA Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The Trojans will have a chance to improve to 3-0 while Louisiana is looking to secure back-to-back wins to start the season.
It will be the final nonconference game for the Trojans before starting their Big Ten Conference schedule, with a game on the road against Rutgers next week.
Maiava is back for his fourth season of college football, his third with the Trojans. He's already completed 48-of-54 pass attempts for 635 yards and five touchdowns. He's only been sacked once this season and has yet to throw an interception.
Lunch Winfield saw the most time at quarterback for Louisiana in the blowout win over the Lamar Cardinals last week. Winfield completed 16 of 22 passes for 189 yards and two interceptions. He also contributed to the rushing attack with 84 yards and a touchdown. Darrell Smith also rushed for 84 yards and produced two touchdowns.

On Friday, the USC football team defeated Fresno State 39-0 at the Coliseum. With the victory, the Trojans improved to 2-0 on the 2026 season.
Following the game, USC head coach Lincoln Riley spoke to the media. Here are some of the highlights of what he had to say:
"Excited about the win. Really excited about the shutout. Obviously, it's hard to do. Doesn't happen very often in college football these days. We played at our standard for a higher level tonight, and that was really great to see on all sides. I think the excitement, energy in the Coliseum, energy with our football team was pretty consistent the whole way through. I think we played better as a football team than we did in week one. And that's what you got to do. It may sound boring, cliche, whatever, but that's how you get good, right? You just have to keep taking steps. I thought we attacked it on the short week. I thought the team really prepped well and was really just ready to play this game."
"We did some great things. He makes things challenging on the other side, and I think what you saw was our belief in it was even higher than it was in week one. When we went back and watched week one, we did a lot of good things. Obviously, the first unit did, but when they weren't good, it's just a lot of us not trusting it at times, and I don't want to hide under, 'Well it's young guys and the twos' or things like that. It doesn't matter;we're gonna need them all. So I thought we trusted it more, and saw that he's going to do some things, alongwith our staff, to put us in some good positions, and I thought our guys played fast and confident. That's a group that challenges you in a lot of different ways because of how multiple they are, all the different personnel groupings that they play in. They return some good football players on that team. So for us to limit them the way we did, especially stopping the run, allowed us to get a chance to get after them up front, and then created some opportunities in the secondary. It was obviously a really good performance."
"We had some opportunities where we protected well and were able to do it. Our drives were pretty completemost of the game. We had a couple of things that we didn't like; we messed up a few things. I had a couple bad calls, and then obviously the turnovers. We had two fumbles and we didn't convert a third and a fourth and one in the red zone. We played pretty good other than that, but you can't have that, right? That's just not good enough. So we have to be better there. We have to be more consistent. We were still a little sloppy early in the run game. We made some explosive plays in the pass game, but we have a lot of work to do."

On Saturday, USC opened up its 2026 season by handling San Jose State 42-26 at the Coliseum. With the victory, the Trojans started off the year 1-0.
Earlier this week, the **** ociated Press announced its national player of the week for Week 0 of the college football season. Taking home the honor—and becoming the first player to do so this year—was USC quarterback Jayden Maiava.
Playing only the first three quarters of the game, Maiava kicked off his senior season with one of his most accurate performances. He finished the day completing 25 of his 29 pass attempts for 286 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a score on the ground.
"I think there's a lot of room for me to stay patient as well as a quarterback," Maiava said following Tuesday's practice. "Just continue making the right winning-decision plays and getting the ball in the playmaker's hands."
Obviously, significantly fewer teams were playing in Week 0 than in a typical week, notably decreasing Maiava's competition for the honor. However, it was still a very good performance by USC's quarterback in his season debut.

Los Angeles Dodgers special ******* istant Jason Heyward, who knows a thing or two about the outfield, is working closely with Josue De Paula to help the top prospect work on his defense.
De Paula is the top prospect in the Dodgers organization and one of the best in baseball because of his swing, the best in the system since Corey Seager.
In 2027, De Paula will need to be added to the 40-man roster, and he should get a call-up at some point over the next calendar year, making his development one to watch.
As a hitter, he is arguably ready to be on the Dodgers now, even though he has only played in Double-A and not Triple-A yet.

On Saturday, USC opened up its 2026 season by handling San Jose State 42-26 at the Coliseum. With the victory, the Trojans started off the year 1-0.
One of the talking points following the game had nothing to do with what happened on the field itself, but rather in the crowd. Due to extremely hot temperatures, an early kickoff, and not exactly a marquee opponent, the Trojans drew their lowest attendance in nearly eight years.
On Sunday, USC issued a statement to USA TODAY regarding the Coliseum crowd.
"We understand the factors that impacted Saturday's attendance," the statement read. "We have high expectations and a premier home schedule this season, and we know the competitive advantage an electric Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program. We thank our fans who showed up Saturday and look forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season."
The good news is that the factors that played into Saturday's low attendance should not be a problem the rest of the season. The bad news, however, is that the Trojans play a Friday game this week against Fresno State, which also typically tend to draw smaller crowds.

The college football season got underway Saturday for what could be the sport's final Week 0. One of the teams that kicked things off was the historic USC Trojans.
However, something was noticeably off, and it was even apparent during the broadcast. Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum looked remarkably empty as USC opened the season against San Jose State. The lack of attendance drew so much attention that the school eventually released a statement addressing the issue.
"We understand the factors that impacted Saturday's attendance," USC said via USA TODAY Sports. "We have high expectations and a premier home schedule this season, and we know the competitive advantage an electric Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program. We thank our fans who showed up Saturday and look forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season."

The Trojans officially announced an attendance of 51,144 for the game, their lowest figure under head coach Lincoln Riley and their lowest since 2018. However, the stadium appeared to have significantly fewer fans in attendance, creating an embarrassing visual for one of college football's most recognizable programs.

Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire started his response to reporters on Monday, Aug. 31 by noting his respect for Southern California coach Lincoln Riley, before then seemingly calling out the Trojans' fanbase for the small crowd at USC's Week 0 win over San Jose State.
The No. 14 Trojans defeated San Jose State 42-26 on Saturday, Aug. 29 in front of an almost-empty crowd at Los Angeles Memorial Stadium, due to unusual humidity in the area paired with low interest in a Week 0 game against a lower-tier Mountain West opponent.
REQUIRED READING: Where is everybody? USC football opens season to empty LA Coliseum
McGuire said that won't be the case when Texas Tech faces Abilene Christian on Sept. 5 in Lubbock, Texas.
"Not to take any shots, because I have a lot of respect for USC and Lincoln Riley, but it's really awesome to be playing in Lubbock, Texas, knowing we're going to be playing in front of 60,000 (fans)," McGuire said Monday. "It's going to be warm. It's going to be every bit as warm as it was Saturday.

Over the weekend, images went viral on social media showing a mostly empty stadium for the USC Trojans' home opener against the San Jose State Spartans. The attendance was so poor that USC's athletic department even felt the need to issue a statement. Now, Fox Sports' Joel Klatt is explaining the issue with the attendance the best way he can.
On Monday's episode of The Joel Klatt Show, Klatt explained that the attendance at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday afternoon was so sparse for one simple reason: people in Los Angeles are "soft."
While there are likely a lot of factors that went into the low attendance for Saturday's game – the week 0 schedule, an inferior opponent, and a noon local kickoff – Klatt blames one thing for the lackluster crowd: the weather.
While there were sunny skies throughout Saturday's contest, Klatt claims it was simply too hot for the Southern California residents, who have grown accustomed to "perfect" weather throughout the year.
"We in the Los Angeles area, in Southern California, are soft," Klatt said simply. "I am as soft as they come. And I have now been here since 2013. And guess what – over 90 [degrees] is too hot, below 56 [degrees] is too cold."

USC debuted its latest concession stand item, which could take over the College Football landscape: the Trojan Beer Sword.
The item is meant to consume its namesake, letting fans pour their beer of choice into the top and fill it up.
It has a red plastic handle with a vertical sword grip, while the "blade" is a clear plastic tube that looks quite long and features the infamous USC logo.
Rather than the top of the sword being round, it is shaved off to be quite pointy, allowing the drinker to put their mouth on the tip and tilt it up for easy consumption.

Kicking off their 2026-27 season at home, the USC Trojans are getting ready to host San Jose State for a Week 0 matchup at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.
The Big Ten has become a vicious conference, and while USC isn't considered one of the top dogs, the program is still solid year-over-year and enters the season ranked 16th in the country. Star quarterback Jayden Maiava's offense will be bolstered by transfer additions Terrell Anderson and Trent Mosley, and new defensive coordinator Gary Patterson is expected to make an immediate impact.
Meanwhile, San Jose State is facing a total overhaul of talent and will be rebuilding for much of this year. While the Spartans are clear underdogs in this matchup, a first-week upset is never completely out of the question. With the right momentum, SJSU could catch USC slacking.
Who will be put into the winner's column?

One of the WNBA's new expansion franchises, the Toronto Tempo, played host to the Indiana Fever for the first time in franchise history on Tuesday. Due to the massive draw that is Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark, the game was moved from Toronto's normal arena of Coca-Coal Coliseum at Exhibition Place, to the larger-capacity Scotiabank Arena, where the Toronto Raptors play.
Heading into the game, The Toronto Sun's Matt Simmons wrote about just how big a draw Clark is.
"There has never been a professional athlete in North American team sports who has changed her league and the business of her sport the way Clark has in three WNBA seasons," Simmons wrote.
Simmons also wrote about Clark's impact on television ratings.
"Of the 10 most-watched WNBA games played this season, all 10 include Clark and the Fever. She's almost her own league, even as her fellow players tend to ignore her, rough her up, or denigrate her play."

USC football's most important game of 2026 is against Oregon. However, if the Trojans do lose that game, they still have a path to the College Football Playoff in the Big Ten. They would likely need to beat either Ohio State or Indiana to get where they need to go. They would also need to beat Penn State and Washington, but that's a separate conversation. Purely in terms of beating one of Ohio State or Indiana, the Trojans might be interested in what happens on October 17.
USC will not play a game on that Saturday. The Trojans will be exhausted after seven consecutive weekends with a game. They will rest and recharge ... and they will very probably watch Ohio State face Indiana in what could be the 2026 Big Ten game of the year. It's a rematch of the 2025 Big Ten Championship Game, in which Indiana beat the Buckeyes, 13-10.
USC fans might ask themselves, "Which team should we want to win?" Would it benefit the Trojans more if Ohio State won, if Indiana won, or does it really matter at all? Reasonable people can and will disagree on this, but our view is simple: It's better for USC if Ohio State wins this game.
Our explanation is as follows: USC hosts Ohio State but visits Indiana. Being brutally honest and realistic, USC has a better chance of beating OSU than Indiana. Therefore, anything which increases the Trojans' chances of being able to beat Ohio State is good for the Men of Troy.
USC hosts Ohio State on October 31, and then plays Indiana two weeks later on November 14. With OSU and Indiana playing on October 17, a Buckeye win will take some pressure off Ohio State when it comes to the Los Angeles Coliseum two weeks later. An Indiana win will make the USC game hugely important for Ohio State, maybe a must-win and certainly a more urgent one.

Watch list season in college football continues to roll along. Recently, USC quarterback Jayden Maiava and running back Waymond Jordan were named to the Maxwell Award Watch List. However, they were not the only Trojans to make a watch list this past week.
On Tuesday, the watch list was announced for the Outland Trophy, presented annually to the top interior lineman in college football. Included on the list was USC offensive lineman Alani Noa.
After earning snaps as a reserve offensive lineman in 2023, Noa has started at offensive guard for the Trojans each of the past two seasons, Now, he returns for his senior year as a key member of a USC offensive line that is bringing back all five starters from 2025 (minus center Kilian O'Connor, who head coach Lincoln Riley announced on Thursday suffered an injury and will miss the entire season).
The only Trojan to ever win the Outland Trophy was offensive lineman Ron Yary all the way back in 1967. For context, USC head coach Lincoln Riley would not be born for another 16 years after that. Now, six decades later, Noa will look to become the second.
USC will kick off its 2026 season on August 29 at the Coliseum against San Jose State.

Last week marked Big Ten Media Days in Chicago. During the event, the conference unveiled its 2026 preseason honors list, One of the players to receive honors was USC quarterback Jayden Maiava.
Unlike a typical preseason all-conference team, the list consists of 12 players, with position not being taken into account. Hence, Maiava was one of three Big Ten quarterbacks to receive honors, along with Ohio State's Julian Sayin and Oregon's Dante Moore.
Maiava is entering his second full season as USC's starting quarterback. As a redshirt junior in 2025, he threw for 3,711 yards and 24 touchdowns, while also adding six scores on the ground. The Trojans finished their 2025 campaign with a record of 9-4.

One of the greatest rivalries in college football won't happen this year, exactly one century after USC and Notre Dame first played.
They'll pick it up again in 2030.
Via Ryan Kartje of the L.A. Times, the Trojans and the Irish have agreed on a four-year home-and-home arrangement beginning in four years.
The series fell apart because USC wanted to move it earlier in the year. Notre Dame resisted. In the end, the first two games in 2030 and 2031 will be played in Week 1, with the 2030 contest at the L.A. Coliseum and the 2031 showdown at South Bend. The 2032 and 2033 editions will land between Week 1 and Week 3.
After 2033, they'll have to agree to continue. Hopefully, they will. Too many great rivalries have been lost in recent decades, as conferences have constantly expanded and shifted and created all sorts of odd matchups that defy the traditions that make college football great.

Given what is now a fitful night of tossin' and turnin', a half eaten breakfast — if that — and a double dose of Pepcid away, the abject tension of Louisville's victory over Arkansas is just about a faint memory of the distant past.
The pivot from last night to next has been palpably immediate.
Tomorrow afternoon, on the composite court of Stokely Coliseum in Knoxville, Tennessee, the University of Louisville will battle the University of Kentucky in a basketball game.
It is of consequence. The victor shall advance to the Final Four.
Of considerably more importance, the victor shall be King of Hoops on the dark and ****** ground of the Commonwealth.

La Familia has made its first run to The Basketball Tournament's championship game in its third year competing in the summer event.
The Kentucky basketball alumni squad defeated JHX Hoops, Kansas' alumni team, 78-65 on Wednesday, July 29, in a TBT semifinal matchup. Former UK guard Archie Goodwin led La Familia in scoring, putting up a game-high 28 points.
Former Wildcats and others will face Davis Steel, a collection of former college basketball players from schools across the country, which came out of the "non-alumni" side of the bracket. Davis Steel competed in previous years as Eberlein Drive and eliminated La Familia in the round of 16 last summer.
The winner of the game, which takes place at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, will take home the $2 million prize. The money distribution is determined by the team and its players.
"To be able to win this — like, the money is cool, but to be able to do this for the school, I think is dope, because it just shows, like, 'Hey, even though (these) guys aren't in the NBA, they still are really good, and they're able to compete,'" Goodwin said. "That's kind of my mindset going in: I wanted to show that we still have that caliber — whether it's NBA or not — with our group, and I think we're doing a good job of that.

Five of Northwestern's seven wins last season came at home, and head coach David Braun thinks that the team might have an even greater advantage at home with the new Ryan Field.
Braun likened his home stadium to a historic venue during Big Ten Media Days on Thursday.
"I think the two things that really stand out when you step into the New Ryan Field, if you're ever fortunate to stand at field level, I mean, you truly feel like you're in a new-age Roman Coliseum. You feel the intimacy. You feel the fans on top of you, the canopy, the acoustics are going to act more like a dome than an outdoor stadium," Braun stated.
Braun continued by talking about the construct of the seats further away from the field.
"Then the reverse engineering of that is try to find a bad seat. Go to the so-called upper deck and go to the back row. I've sat in those seats. The view for the fan is incredible. What I'm most excited about is what this opportunity provides for us to reinvent how we do game day at Northwestern football and ultimately impacts the experience for our players," Braun said.
