The Golden State Valkyries are only in the second year of their existence in the WNBA. And yet here they are, needing to win just three more games to secure the franchise's first championship after grabbing a 68-64 victory in Game 1 against the Atlanta Dream. Both teams had rough shooting nights to begin the WNBA Finals, but in the end, it was the Valkyries that executed when it mattered the most.
With points being at a premium, having someone who can simply generate open looks all while having the ability to make difficult shots could make all the difference. The Valkyries have that in star guard Gabby Williams, who finished with a game-high 26 points on 8-22 shooting from the field.
The signing of Williams this past offseason has certainly elevated a middling playoff team to a full-blown ***** le contender. The Big East Conference announced the men's regular season basketball league schedule Sept. 14, completing Xavier's 2026-27 regular season slate.
Xavier, which finished 16-18 overall and tied for last in the Big East (6-14) last year, opens league play on Saturday, Dec. 19 on the road against Marquette at Fiserv Forum.

LOS ANGELES -- The Phoenix Mercury visited the Los Angeles Sparks last month at the Galen Center in the University of Southern California. A lot changed from their visit before that a couple of weeks before to their game at USC.
For Kahleah Copper, a lot changed for her as well. Hours after their game against the Sparks on July 22nd, Copper was named to the All-Star team as she replaced her friend, then-Sparks guard Kelsey Plum.
About a week after All-Star weekend, Plum was traded to the Mercury and the friends were suddenly teammates.
"(Plum brought) her energy, her vibes, her leadership, her championship experience (to the team)," Copper said before their game against the Sparks at USC. "She knows what it takes to win. I'm glad to play alongside with her."

LJ Wells, a 6'8 power forward who played the last four seasons at Northern Kentucky, has committed to play for Louisville in 2026-27. Wells is the namesake plaintiff in the ongoing Wells vs. NCAA case in Jefferson County Circuit Court that earned a fifth-year of eligibility for players like Wells, D'Angelo Hutchinson, Jabari Mack, and Missouri hooper Mark Mitchell.
Wells started all 33 games for the Norse last season, posting career-best averages of 15.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He also earned All-Horizon Tournament Team honors after averaging 22.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 ***** ists while helping NKU to the Horizon League semis, where they fell to eventual champion Wright State.

Clark, however, was limited to only 13 games played last year — which happened to be Sophie Cunningham's first season with the Fever. 2026 has given Cunningham an opportunity to see Clark's game on a more consistent basis, and one specific element of Clark's approach has especially impressed the WNBA veteran.
"I will say, yeah, she (Clark) didn't play last year and that was my first time really being on the team and being her teammate, but I really do feel like this year she is using her body so, so well," Cunningham said on her new podcast, No Hesitation with Sophie Cunningham Drew Hanlen. Olehy was only 49 ******* ists short heading into the night, and she got it in the fourth set — a set in which the Eagles rallied from down 18-16 to win 25-18. On the play, the senior tossed a picture-perfect ball in the middle, allowing junior Aubrey ******* to fly in for an emphatic kill.

The Lady Pirates' soccer team got to play in front of the home crowd Monday and Greensburg made it well worth the price of admission.
Greensburg scored six goals in the first half and another three goals in the second half to knock off Knightstown 9-0.

USA Basketball announced on Monday that the second-year player has been added to the Women's National Team roster for the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup. The United States are pursuing their fifth consecutive gold medal when the tournament begins on Friday, Sept. 4.
Citron, who plays for the Washington Mystics, will be joined by Kiki Iriafen to replace two-time World Cup gold medalists A'ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum. The two stars had to back out due to health reasons, which in turn provides Citron her first opportunity to play for the U.S. senior national team on the sport's largest stage.
