It's been a long time since former Arizona star Aari McDonald played in a WNBA game. That has come to an end with the first-place Minnesota Lynx announcing her signing on Monday afternoon.
McDonald was injured last August while playing for the Indiana Fever. She tried to come back by playing in the Unrivaled 3×3 league during the WNBA offseason, but she was again sidelined by injury. As WNBA training camp approached this year, she said she would not be in camp but she would return this season. It took a while, but now she's not only returning, but she's doing it with the best team in the league.
The Lynx lead the WNBA standings with a 31-9 record and four games left in the regular season. The league returns to play on Sept. 18 after a break for the FIBA Women's World Cup where many top players are representing their countries. That event runs from Sept. 4-13, but the league shut down on Aug. 31.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced on Friday that she will be retiring from her role at the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Engelbert, 61, has held the commissioner role since July 2019. She is the second-longest president or commissioner in the league's history.
"Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league's 30-year history," said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. "We are grateful for Cathy's leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of women's basketball."

That's because from Monday to Sept. 16 the league is taking a hiatus for the women's basketball FIBA World Cup where a cohort of its best players will be competing with their respective national teams. Players began arriving in Berlin this week with the tournament's group stages set to tip off on Sept. 4.
This break is a standard procedure during any World Cup year, but this season as the pool of international talent has expanded in the WNBA, even more stars will be on the global stage.
The U.S. women's national team will be competing for its fifth consecutive World Cup gold medal with a roster composed of some of the WNBA's biggest stars. Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson and Phoenix Mercury guard Kelsey Plum were late scratches from Team USA's roster due to injuries. But a new era of players, including Caitlin Clark (Indiana Fever), Paige Bueckers (Dallas Wings) and Angel Reese (Atlanta Dream), will make their debuts with other young stars like Aliyah Boston (Fever) and Rhyne Howard (Dream). Washington Mystics teammates Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron will be making their debuts as well, replacing Wilson and Plum. It would be easy to ****** ume that Caitlin Clark's recent play — ranking top three in both points and ****** ists per game — would place the Indiana Fever superstar toward the top of the WNBA MVP race, but the betting world captures why that is simply not the case.
Las Vegas Aces superstar A'ja Wilson is still an overwhelming favorite at sportsbooks (-1200 odds at DraftKings) and prediction markets (88 percent at Kalshi) to capture her third straight MVP and record fifth overall. Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles is second at +800 and 8 percent, followed by Clark at 35-to-1 and 4 percent, then Clark's teammate Kelsey Mitchell at 40-to-1 and 1 percent.
We know voters take into account a candidate's relative value to their team, but how can that be actually quantified? The Athletic attempted this by asking betting experts to gauge each candidate's impact against the point spread, if their team were favored by five points on a neutral court before accounting for their absence.
"It's similar to the quarterbacks, and [their] point-spread adjustments are based on the [drop-off between them and the] backup. A lot of this is in relation to what's left remaining on the team," longtime Las Vegas oddsmaker and Circa Sports senior risk manager Jeff Sherman told The Athletic. "That's where Wilson stands out."
Wilson received the highest distinction from each expert interviewed but the value ranged from four to eight points. They also all agreed Wilson's defense separates her, hence why she also is the second favorite to win her fourth Defensive Player of the Year award (+160).

The Golden State Valkyries responded to back-to-back losses with consecutive wins, their latest coming Wednesday night against the Connecticut Sun, 89-64.
The Valkyries' losses to the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx really tested the team – one a loss to a marquee team in Minnesota, which boasts the best-record in the league, then losing on a game-winning, step-back 3-pointer at the buzzer to the Sky.
Golden State responded to those tough losses with some get back against the Lynx, returning the "L" back to them and getting its first win against Minnesota in the franchise's short, two-year history.

Micron (NASDAQ: MU) stock tumbled 5.5% in the first five minutes of trading Monday after tech news site WCCTech reported the Trump Administration has decided to permit Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) to purchase memory chips from Chinese suppliers ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC).

The Dallas Wings picked up a 96-78 win over the Portland Fire on Tuesday night at the Moda Center, which officially locked up the eighth and final postseason spot this summer. That got the team back into the playoffs for the first time since 2023.
The loss also eliminated the Fire from the playoffs. The expansion team entered Tuesday night more than six games back from the Wings in the standings, however, so this was very likely coming sooner or later.
While the playoff field is now solidified, no seed has been locked up just yet. The Minnesota Lynx hold the best record in the league and are on pace to grab the No. 1 seed. They could have clinched that seed on Monday night, but fell to the Golden State Valkyries. The Valkyries are in second in the league standings.

The Fever did not play Friday, but they clinched the spot via a Portland loss 82-79 to Toronto early Saturday morning. Indiana (24-13) is the fourth team to clinch a playoff spot, joining the Minnesota Lynx, Golden State Valkyries and Las Vegas Aces.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx have a new majority owner. Marc Stad — who previously owned a minority stake in both teams — reportedly "completed a deal to become the controlling owner and largest shareholder" of both franchises from Marc Lore, according to ESPN.
Stad is reportedly buying Lore's stake in the team at a $4.5 billion valuation, per ESPN.
