When the Miami Dolphins take the field on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, a trio of first-year players have the potential to collectively make NFL history. Three of Miami's 13 selections from the 2026 NFL Draft were wide receivers Caleb Douglas, Chris Bell and Kevin Coleman Jr.
Douglas was Miami's first receiver taken during this past April's draft when the Dolphins used pick No. 75 on the Texas Tech product. Bell from Louisville was selected with pick No. 94, and Coleman Jr. with pick No. 177 out of Missouri.
While a rare occurrence in any team class, there have been several instances where three receivers were selected by one team in a single draft. In fact, the Dolphins last tripled up at the position in 1975 with Freddie Solomon, Morris Owens and Leonard Isabell.
What has never happened before in league history is three drafted receivers each recording a reception during Week 1 of their rookie season. Douglas, Bell and Coleman could be that lone trio come Sunday. There have been a few close hits, but in the dozen or so cases, Miami's young trio could break the ice.

Michigan women's basketball guard Brooke Quarles Daniels had an excellent journey in her four years of college basketball.
The 5-foot-7 guard from Macomb, Mich. played two years at Oakland, averaging 12.8 points, 2.9 ****** ists and 2.2 steals per game while named to the All-Horizon League Second Team twice, as Freshman of the Year in 2023. Then, she transferred to the Wolverines, representing her home state for two seasons that took her from a defensive sparkplug off the bench to a senior veteran leader, standout defender on a national scale and an Elite Eight starter.
Quarles Daniels was second in the Big Ten with 2.4 steals per game in conference play, averaging 5.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.9 ****** ists and 2.1 steals per game alongside a 1.7 ****** ist-to-turnover ratio in her final season for Michigan.
"Brooke, she's one of the hardest workers on the team, and she's given us literally everything she could possibly give to our team," junior guard Olivia Olson said March 30 following the Elite Eight loss. "With defense and just pressing all the time and just being a leader for our team, like she's really given everything. So it kind of just was like that, 'This is how you're going to go out. You're going to go out doing the same thing as you always have.' "

Los Angeles Dodgers special ******* istant Jason Heyward, who knows a thing or two about the outfield, is working closely with Josue De Paula to help the top prospect work on his defense.
De Paula is the top prospect in the Dodgers organization and one of the best in baseball because of his swing, the best in the system since Corey Seager.
In 2027, De Paula will need to be added to the 40-man roster, and he should get a call-up at some point over the next calendar year, making his development one to watch.
As a hitter, he is arguably ready to be on the Dodgers now, even though he has only played in Double-A and not Triple-A yet.

Was Jonathan Haidt right all along? Readers of this newsletter—and writers at Reason—are surely divided on this one. On Wednesday of this week, news broke that Meta had reached a humongous $17.1 billion settlement with 47 states and the District of Columbia, forced to pay damages due to child-endangerment claims stemming from its social media algorithms and platforms.
"The owner of Facebook and Instagram agreed to the financial penalties for violating federal child privacy and states' consumer protection laws, the states announced," reports The New York Times. "Meta also agreed to limit how long teenagers can spend on its platforms and to bans on features that stoke mental health issues, striking at the heart of the company's business of engagement for advertising."
"The settlement effectively ends a bellwether federal trial in the U.S. Northern District of California in Oakland, where California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey were seeking roughly $200 billion over accusations that Meta harmed children," adds the Times. Meta, the owner of Instagram and Facebook, at times invoked a Section 230 defense, the "First Amendment of the internet" that makes it so companies don't bear liability for the posts of their users—which Reason has repeatedly defended amid a media landscape that doesn't seem to understand the value of Section 230.
"After years of being barred from suing social platforms, state prosecutors have gotten creative," wrote Reason's Elizabeth Nolan Brown earlier this month about the California/Colorado/Kentucky/New Jersey suit. "They're now claiming that this isn't about user-generated speech but about tech companies' product design. San Antonio FC will try to halt a recent slide and regain their footing in the USL Championship Western Conference table when they take on a hot New Mexico United club Saturday on the road.
SAFC (8-5-8, 32 points), which sits in fifth place, and conference leading New Mexico (11-4-4, 37 points) kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.
San Antonio steps into the challenging high-altitude environment of Albuquerque against New Mexico, which has propelled itself to the top spot in Western Conference based on winning nine of its last 11 league matches. New Mexico has not lost a league match in more than three months - the last of which came in a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies on May 20.
In contrast, SAFC is trying to shake off last week's 1-0 home loss to the Oakland Roots SC, which was its second straight loss at Toyota Field. The back-to-back home losses have dropped SAFC from second place to fifth in the Western Conference standings.

Something I've seen several times here is the notion that the A's will have trouble luring a quality GM to be the next front office leader of the club. After all several openings will exist (we know for sure Houston is looking) and why would a GM choose the A's, a nomadic team closing in on 100 losses if they're not careful?
Glad you asked. To A's fans things might look bleak at the moment, as the team limps to the finish line in a season that has been epically disappointing. But to a GM coming on board, there is much to recommend the job:
1. A new stadium is imminent and that is always a terrific position for a franchise to be in. With the opening of a new stadium — and in this case also a new city location — comes excitement and the promise of a new revenue stream.
Now you and I may be as skeptical as we want as to how much Las Vegas will embrace the A's, how many of the fans will be die-hard A's fans and not tourists pulling hard for the opponent, whether all the games will be sold out or whether a small stadium will still struggle to fill every seat.
Nonetheless it's pretty much a given that attendance will be strong in the maiden years and that overall it will dwarf the numbers from Oakland and Sacramento, if only because those numbers were so small.

At a glance, you'd think that Marquette men's soccer started their season off okay at worst. It's hard to say any two game set that avoids putting a number in the loss column is a bad thing, and the Golden Eagles are 1-0-1 after two matches.
However, because Marquette got outshot 12-5 by Oakland in the opener, including 9-2 after halftime, the Golden Eagles are carrying a heavy shot deficit into the second week of the season. 23 against, just 14 for.
That's bad enough at face value, obviously, but it's a bigger problem that you might realize right away. Last year, Marquette outshot Big East opponents 118-77 overall. That's 14.8 to 9.6 on average. That's good, of course, but MU got outscored 11-5 in those eight matches, and four of those five goals came in Marquette's lone win of Big East play last season.
As we talked about when the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll came out, non-conference play is not going to challenge Marquette the same way that Big East play will. None of MU's non-con opponents were earning preseason votes — including the Oakland and Saint Mary's teams that just outshot the Golden Eagles — but all three Big East squads that were in the preseason top 25 are on the league schedule for Marquette.
So, you can see the problem with MU getting pushed a little bit too hard by their non-conference opponents. Yes, there's a lot of newcomers on this roster, so easing into the season makes sense as the team comes together. Just three of those newcomers started against SMC on Sunday, and just three more played more than a handful of minutes. For the most part, Marquette's lineup is guys who are familiar with how head coach David Korn wants things to go… and while the record is fine, the pathway there — especially giving up a lead twice against Oakland to settle for a draw — has been rocky at best.

It's no secret that the Rockies are struggling at home right now.
Not only has Colorado lost eight in a row at Coors Field, but the Rockies are 27-38 at home. That's more losses at home than every team except the A's, who are temporarily playing in West Sacramento as a rest stop between Oakland and Las Vegas.
While there needs to be significant improvement on the pitching side and on the hitting side for Colorado at 5,280 feet, having more Rockies fans engaged in the game also couldn't hurt.
There are the fountains that get fired up in center field on homers, which doesn't happen as much as it needs to, and there is the dark-into-flashing lights before the ninth inning, but it seems like there needs to be more.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Barry Pearson, who was a part of the legendary Immaculate Reception play, has died. He was 76. Pearson passed away on Aug. 16, according to his obituary.
Barry signed with the Steelers as a free agent shortly before his graduating from Northwestern in 1972.
He was on the field during the Immaculate Reception game; it was his first career play. Pearson was elevated after a late-season injury to Frank Lewis. Pearson brought in the play to Terry Brashaw. Kohler, a former Michigan State big man who gained an extra year of eligibility through a Colorado federal court ruling last month, is transferring to BYU, his agent told Rivals on Thursday night. Kohler is from American Fork, Utah.
Kohler, 23, played four seasons for Michigan State, and last year, he averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds while shooting 38.9% from 3 and 50% from the floor in helping lead the Spartans to the Sweet 16.
His college career seemed to be over when he played for his hometown Utah Jazz in the NBA's Summer League, before the court order came down that granted the entire 2022 recruiting class a fifth year of eligibility.
That same court order led to Oakland point guard Brody Robinson transferring to Creighton, despite Oakland leaving a roster spot open should the courts allowed him an extra season. Robinson was among several college athletes who sued for an extra year of eligibility.

The Texas Rangers scored five runs while the Washington Nationals scored zero runs.
Maybe all the Rangers needed was to play a team from the National League. Sure the American League is terrible this season but Texas obviously likes a challenge. Why put in your best effort against the likes of Anaheim and Not-Oakland when you can show up the Senior Circuit?
It's probably just anecdotal but it feels like the Rangers have been cooled off a time or two by scheduled days off. However yesterday was a day off that was most welcome and allowed the club to reset after a well-documented unseemly trip out West.
Back home and with the trouble on the coast fully flushed, the Rangers scored a run in the first inning to grab the all important early lead. The run that scored following a couple of hits from Wyatt Langford and Corey Seager came after Cal Quantrill had worked around a leadoff CJ Abrams double in the top of the first.
An inning later, Texas didn't need to manufacture a run as they turned to the long ball with a solo shot from Justin Foscue. One of many Rangers who have been slumping in August, Foscue collected his eighth dinger of the year as the night's designated hitter against a left-handed starter for Washington.

It wasn't the news that the Arizona Cardinals wanted to hear, running back Jeremiyah Love, the star taken No. 3 overall out of Notre Dame may miss the rest of the preseason after suffering an ankle injury during Thursday's victory over the Oakland Raiders according to Adam Schefter.
The potential starter had a fantastic first showing, rushing for 58-yards on 11 carries with three catches for 14-yards. As with all preseason games, the top players don't get much run, so this was just a taste of what Love can do. Every trait that you want to see from a running back is there, as he used his spin move that wowed social media.

Of the thousands of lawsuits Meta faces over child safety on its platforms, none may be more consequential than one going to trial this week in California.
States are seeking extensive financial damages that could, in theory, total as much as $1.4 trillion, plus changes to how the company operates Facebook and Instagram.
The lawsuit accuses the social media giant of contributing to the youth mental health crisis by knowingly and deliberately designing features that get children addicted to its platforms. It also claims that Meta routinely collects data on children under 13 without their parents' consent, in violation of federal law.
"Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens. Its motive is profit, and in seeking to maximize its financial gains," the lawsuit says.
Dozens of states filed the lawsuit three years ago. The trial set to begin Tuesday in federal court in Oakland, California, features four of the states as plaintiffs — California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey. The other 25 states are expected to have trials later.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tommy John, the namesake of the surgery which revolutionized baseball, died aged 83 on Saturday.
John, a 26-year MLB veteran, pitched in parts of six seasons with the Dodgers from 1972-78, pitching three seasons on either side of his game-changing surgery.
"The Los Angeles Dodgers would like to express our sadness over the passing of Tommy John, who died Saturday at the age of 83," the Dodgers wrote via X. "Thanks in no small part to the pioneering surgery that bears his name, Tommy's extraordinary career encompassed 26 seasons and 288 career victories. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends."
John suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in 1974, and underwent UCL reconstruction surgery to repair it that year. Dr. Frank Jobe performed the surgery, now named after John, as the procedure solved what had previously been a career-ending injury.
After his surgery, John returned to MLB and pitched 14 more seasons, ending his career with the New York Yankees. Over the course of his career, the left-hander pitched for the Yankees, Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, Cleveland Indians and Oakland Athletics.

On Aug. 8, the New York Yankees released a social media post in which John wrote that he wanted to say goodbye to everyone, including friends and fans who followed him throughout his career, saying, "I will never forget you."
John was a four-time All-Star with a record of 288-231 and a 3.34 ERA during a career that stretched from 1963 to 1989. He pitched for Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Yankees, the California Angels and the Oakland Athletics.
The left-hander was 31 years old when he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow in 1974, a death knell for pitchers' careers to that point.

LEOMINSTER ‒ When Jeff Bercume, the CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster, was looking for a way to celebrate the amount of talented athletes in the North County, creating the North Central Mass. High School Basketball Showcase was an easy decision.
So on Saturday, August 15, many of those athletes took part in a wonderful day of basketball on the outdoor court behind the building.
"We wanted to have an event that brought the community together that put kids at the forefront of the work that we do," said Bercume, who is also an ***** istant baseball coach at St. John's, where he graduated from before playing college baseball at Merrimack University and signing a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics. "And so with the help of local high school coaches, they nominated their players and we got the best ... to be here today."
So, Bercume and his team surveyed local coaches for talented players and split them up into two teams, Team Fire and Team Ice, each with around 10 players.
"More or less, if the town itself touches Fitchburg or Leominster, we wanted that town to be represented here," Bercume said. "So we just introduced ourselves to those coaches and asked them to nominate their best players, and those players got selected to be on the roster."

It was one of those July days in Middle Tennessee. The punishing kind, where shade is at a premium, no one's clothing stays dry and forearms are seared by leaning against metal fences.
Between those fences, 24 high school football teams had braved the blistering sun for hours, contesting a 7-on-7 tournament. It had, mercifully, ended by the afternoon, and 23 teams had long since vanished from Lebanon High School's campus into the air-conditioned comfort of a ride home.
But not Pearl-Cohn.
On an otherwise empty field, the Firebirds were crowded under a tent. Heart-to-heart sermons from ***** istant coaches to players, preaching toughness and dedication, rolled without an end in sight. "They got to hear it right now," Pearl-Cohn coach Tony Brunetti said, watching approvingly from an adjoining tent.
Crazy thing was they hadn't performed poorly in the tournament. Pearl-Cohn reached the championship game before losing to powerhouse Oakland High. Nothing for the Firebirds to be ashamed of in that showing, but to Brunetti, it was the way they lost.
