Was Jonathan Haidt right all along? Readers of this newsletter—and writers at Reason—are surely divided on this one. On Wednesday of this week, news broke that Meta had reached a humongous $17.1 billion settlement with 47 states and the District of Columbia, forced to pay damages due to child-endangerment claims stemming from its social media algorithms and platforms.
"The owner of Facebook and Instagram agreed to the financial penalties for violating federal child privacy and states' consumer protection laws, the states announced," reports The New York Times. "Meta also agreed to limit how long teenagers can spend on its platforms and to bans on features that stoke mental health issues, striking at the heart of the company's business of engagement for advertising."
"The settlement effectively ends a bellwether federal trial in the U.S. Northern District of California in Oakland, where California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey were seeking roughly $200 billion over accusations that Meta harmed children," adds the Times. Meta, the owner of Instagram and Facebook, at times invoked a Section 230 defense, the "First Amendment of the internet" that makes it so companies don't bear liability for the posts of their users—which Reason has repeatedly defended amid a media landscape that doesn't seem to understand the value of Section 230.
"After years of being barred from suing social platforms, state prosecutors have gotten creative," wrote Reason's Elizabeth Nolan Brown earlier this month about the California/Colorado/Kentucky/New Jersey suit. "They're now claiming that this isn't about user-generated speech but about tech companies' product design. In this case, the states claim that providing photo filters is contributing to teens' body dysmorphia and that 'psychologically manipulative' features like displaying post 'like' counts, sending notifications, and using algorithms to curate content around a user's particular interests are what's keeping kids hooked, not the actual content on Facebook and Instagram. It's a silly claim, since clearly there could be no 'addiction' to social media if not for the content or communications contained on these platforms."
"The attorneys general and plaintiffs say that Meta's algorithms trap its users in the infinite scroll, hours of time spent staring at half-naked influencers or malnourished celebrities, images that breed body dysmorphia, anxiety and depression," reads a different Times article. This case was very explicitly built off of arguments and research found in Jonathan Haidt's book The Anxious Generation, which has enjoyed mainstream appeal. "Mr. Haidt met with some of the attorneys general on Zoom, briefing them on his research," the Times continues.

One of the strangest scheduling anomalies in all of sports is about to have its swan song this weekend in college football's befuddling and charming Week 0.
The fact that a Week 0 even exists is quintessential college football in that it couldn't really exist anywhere else and make any sense at all. However, it has been alive for years, allowing a select handful of teams an opportunity to begin the regular season a week before everybody else. The weekend is open to anyone playing an international game (TCU-UNC in Dublin, Ireland) and anyone playing an away game at Hawaii to compensate for their extra travel. The NCAA can also provide a waiver for games, although that is rare. This season, it was given to NC State and Virginia as they were originally scheduled to play their season opener in Brazil before it was moved back stateside.
However, 2026 will be the last year that the sport enjoys an appetizer before the regular season truly kicks off in full. The FBS Oversight Committee approved legislation on Friday that will move the calendar up one week so that all teams begin during the week that has served as Week 0.
"Earlier this year, the FBS Calendar Subgroup presented recommendations to the committee to amend the regular season and the off-campus recruiting model," the NCAA briefing said. "In response to those recommendations, a new FBS first-contest date has been adopted and will take effect in the 2027 season. The season will begin on the Thursday of what is now designated Week 0 and end on the Saturday after Thanksgiving."
This year's Week 0 consists of eight games. And while none of them are true barnburners, it's a nice, gentle way to start the regular season. And with American fans starved for any kind of football that matters, we will gladly sit down and watch New Mexico State travel to Florida State in primetime.

Alongside boosting exploration and production offshore its home market Norway, Equinor is pursuing an international growth strategy, aiming to significantly increase its overseas oil and gas output by focusing on fewer but more lucrative regions such as the U.S., Brazil, and Angola.
In recent years, Equinor has streamlined and high-graded its portfolio outside Norway, selling ****** ets and positions in Azerbaijan and Nigeria, to name a few.
But Equinor has kept and grown its U.S., Brazilian, and Angolan businesses, and plans to keep these growing through 2030, the company's executives said at the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) energy conference in Stavanger this week.
Equinor's international production averaged 750,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) in the second quarter of 2026. The company expects to raise this to 950,000 boepd by 2030, by boosting the U.S., Brazilian, and Angolan output, executive vice president Philippe Mathieu said at a press briefing in Stavanger on Tuesday.
"Equinor's international oil and gas portfolio is simplified, improved and set for significant growth," Mathieu said.

MOSCOW, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Russia warned on Thursday that it could strike British military targets inside and outside Ukraine in ‌response to Ukrainian attacks on targets inside Russia using long-range ‌British cruise missiles.
The warning, delivered by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a news briefing in Moscow, was the strongest of is kind yet from Russia to Britain, a NATO member state and a staunch ally of Ukraine.
Zakharova said London was "one step away" from becoming legally complicit in ‌what she called "terrorism" against Russian ⁠civilians, something she said would have "catastrophic consequences" unless Britain changed course.
"We have repeatedly warned that any British military ⁠installations and equipment in Ukraine and beyond its borders could be targeted in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory carried out using British weapons," she said.
"We propose that the British leadership once again carefully **** yse ‌the situation and immediately, in the most resolute and unequivocal manner, abandon the hostile, aggressive line, which can only ... create the risk of the conflict escalating to an entirely new level," she said.

LONDON, Aug 26 (Reuters) - The outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Uganda is over ‌but it is not under control in neighbouring Democratic ‌Republic of Congo, a World Health Organization official told a briefing on Wednesday.
The all-clear for Uganda follows a declaration on July 28 from the Ugandan government that it was free of the disease, which caused 20 cases and two deaths in the country.
The WHO monitored the ‌situation until this week ⁠to ensure that no chains of transmission had been missed.
But Dr Marie Roseline Belizaire, director of ⁠emergency preparedness for the WHO African region, told a WHO regional meeting that cases in Democratic Republic of Congo continued to rise despite some progress. The outbreak there is the second-deadliest in history, ‌and outpacing containment efforts.

KYIV, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Ukraine sees a window of opportunity for U.S. mediation to end Russia's war in Ukraine until the end of next summer and has ‌drafted one page of ideas with U.S. and European officials to be presented to ‌Moscow, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.
Zelenskiy said that a ceasefire and a previously discussed U.S. proposal for a free economic zone in Ukraine's eastern Donbas area — to be administered by a third party — were among the ideas in the document.
"It contains one of the ideas for a ceasefire — that is the main point. The second part concerns what the Americans proposed regarding a free economic zone," Zelenskiy told reporters in ‌a weekend briefing.
Zelenskiy said that ⁠he saw a window to end the nearly four-and-a-half years of fighting that stretched from the G20 summit in the U.S. in December this year ⁠until the end of summer 2027, given the looming campaign for the 2028 presidential election in the U.S.
Zelenskiy said earlier this month that Ukraine had handed proposals to U.S. negotiators for a plan to end the war, without providing more detail.

Alex Brundle believes Lewis Hamilton was fully justified in venting his frustration over team radio during the Dutch Grand Prix.
The seven-time champion narrowly missed out on a podium at Zandvoort, taking the chequered flag in fourth place behind race winner Lando Norris and the Mercedes pair of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
Hamilton was clearly frustrated throughout the race with various tense radio messages. While reviewing the race on F1 TV, Brundle defended Hamilton's outburst when the pitwall asked which tyre compound he wanted to change to.
"That would upset me from inside the car as well because you're looking at the team asking you which tyre you want to be put on," Brundle explained. "They've already seen a stint on the medium compound from Charles Leclerc. They're sitting there with all of the data, and effectively you've got an engineer on the pitwall hedging their bets based around what the driver is going to say.
"Of course Lewis has sat in the briefings. Lewis has felt the tyres. He's the only person sitting in the car. But I think his response there actually came amid a slightly turbulent day where he did sound slightly upset over the radio in general.

Former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki scathingly attacked her Trump counterpart Karoline Leavitt on Thursday, claiming she faced hardly any tough questions in the briefing room and had no interest in engaging in good faith discussions.

SEOUL, Aug 10 (Reuters) - South Korea will launch a 5 trillion won ($3.52 billion) semiconductor fund targeting promising chip materials, parts, equipment and fabless companies, a presidential official said, ‌as Seoul seeks to accelerate plans for new chip manufacturing hubs across the country.
The government will also ‌provide a further 5 trillion won in trade finance for suppliers, Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik told a press briefing after a meeting chaired by President Lee Jae Myung on Monday.
The measures are part of Lee's semiconductor megaproject initiative unveiled in June, under which Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, together with suppliers and local governments, are expected to invest more than $576 billion in new chip manufacturing projects, including major fabrication facilities in the country's southwest region.
"The government will create a new semiconductor fund worth ‌about 5 trillion won focused on promising ⁠materials, parts and equipment firms and fabless companies," Kang said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — When George W. Bush wrote an essay this year about another president named George, he avoided mentioning the one named Donald.
So did Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. The three ex-presidents joined a roster of historians and authors in contributing to the In Pursuit project, a 250th-anniversary series that had each writer produce an essay about a president or first lady.
Though the project was explicitly designed to transcend today's politics, some of its essays nevertheless reflect anxieties that are flaring in the era of President Donald Trump over the use of power, the health of the democracy and the integrity of the presidency.
The project is being curated by Colleen Shogan, the U.S. archivist who was fired without explanation by Trump last year. She instructed contributors not to be partisan or ideological. "Everybody took those instructions and that guidance very seriously," she told The ****** ociated Press. The goal was for all Americans to "feel welcome to be able to read these lessons and essays and learn something from them."
The mission, Shogan said, "is to surface the lessons from the past 250 years of American history, so that we can learn from those lessons, from both our successes and our failures, so we can plan for the present and the future. It's what has been described as debriefing the American story."

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) bristled when asked Thursday about White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt's statement that President Trump's "patience is running out" with the Senate GOP leader because of the stalled SAVE America Act.
"Maybe she or somebody else ought to get on the phone and get the votes. Right? It's 50 around here," Thune shot back when asked about Leavitt's statement to reporters at a press briefing earlier Thursday.
"Instead of pointing the finger at Republicans, they might think about going after the people who are stopping it on the floor, which is the Democrats," the senator added, appearing somewhat irritated by the critical comment. "And if there are Republicans they think are gettable, get on the phone."
Leavitt said Trump's patience with Thune's handling of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, which the Senate has voted on — in whole or in part — at least five times but has failed to move forward, is wearing thin.
The remark comes as the president has ramped up his push for Republicans to support the voter ID bill, legislation that would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID when casting ballots.

As health officials investigate a multistate cyclospora outbreak, so far linked to recalled iceberg lettuce, many Americans are asking the same question after eating a salad or sandwich: Should I be worried?
Federal health officials have linked shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in five states to a subset of the outbreak, prompting the fast-food chain to pull Taylor Farms lettuce from its food.

TAMPA, Fla. – Steve Sarkisian broke some news Thursday at the SEC's media days when he announced that blue-chip defensive back recruit John Meredith reclassified from the 2027 class to 2026 and will join Texas football for the upcoming football season.
Meredith, a 6-foot-2, 188-pound cornerback, was ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the nation for 2027, per 247 Sports. He played last season at Trinity High School in the Fort Worth suburbs but tried to transfer to defending state champion North Crowley in the offseason. Earlier this month, the UIL declared Meredith ineligible at North Crowley but said he could play at Trinity.

LIMA — A Lima youth track and field team will send 22 city athletes to the 2026 American Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games, as announced Wednesday at Mayor Sharetta Smith’s media briefing in council chambers.
The former C2K Striders Track Club featured an expanded roster of nearly 90 kids this season, ages 5 to 18, after combining with the Columbus Panthers Track Club. Through the athletes’ perseverance in challenging weather conditions, Coach Roderick Simpson Jr. said, the now-C2K Panthers placed 45 athletes — 22 from Lima — in the youth track and field national championships, which run Saturday, Aug. 1 to Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Drake University stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
The C2K Panthers are taking donations to fund their national championship trip and future travel. To donate, funds should be dedicated to the group through the Lima Community Foundation at 207 W. Elm St., Lima.
Simpson said that the team merger helped solidify the Lima club while they were “lacking certain things” to compete at the highest level. The personnel connections with the Columbus group played a large role in that fortification, Simpson said.
“That coach (in Columbus), he’s the one who started the program in Lima. He just ended up leaving for job purposes,” Simpson said. “That’s when (Coach Chris Jackson) took over. So, you know, it’s one big family.”

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Tuesday that federal officials have brought the multistate cyclospora outbreak "under control," saying investigators have identified the source of the illnesses and implemented recalls, even as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues investigating the precise source of the contamination.
"We do have the outbreak under control," Kennedy said during a healthcare fraud briefing Tuesday. "We have done extensive forensics, epidemiological forensics and we have identified the source of the outbreak. We, and the companies that are involved, have implemented a recall."
Kennedy's comments came two days after the FDA said an earlier laboratory result indicating a Taylor Farms lettuce sample tested positive for cyclospora should be considered a false positive following an additional laboratory review.
The FDA said it continues investigating the outbreak and collecting product samples. While traceback investigators identified Taylor Farms de Mexico as the supplier of shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants linked to the outbreak, the agency said no product samples connected to the investigation have produced a confirmed positive result for the parasite.

July 18 (Reuters) - Ontario Premier Doug Ford said U.S. criticism of Canadian efforts to stop the "terrible scenario" of spreading forest fires in his province and choking smoke across a broad swath of the ‌United States was "absolutely unacceptable."
"We're trying to get through this," Ford said on Saturday, adding that if the situation were reversed ‌and the U.S. were facing wildfires, "we're going to be down there to support our neighbors."
President Donald Trump blamed what he called incompetent Canadian forest management for the smoke and said on Friday he would add the "incalculable cost" of dealing with the pollution to existing tariffs on Canadian goods. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Ford's remarks.
Ford said at a press briefing that 655,000 hectares (1.6 million acres) of forest were burning across Ontario, Canada's most populous province.
