Saudi ‌Arabia will organise the next three ⁠editions ⁠of the Asian Champions League Elite finals after the Asian Football Confederation's ⁠executive committee confirmed the country's provisional hosting rights had been made permanent.
The Saudis have hosted the first two editions of the event, which sees the quarterfinals, semifinals and final played in ‌a centralised venue, since the continent's premier club competition was restructured before the 2024/2025 season.
Jeddah-based outfit Al-Ahli have won the **** le on the two occasions the city has hosted the ⁠finals, defeating **** an's Kawasaki ⁠Frontale in 2025 before beating Machida Zelvia, also from **** an, in May.
The upcoming edition of the tournament, which ⁠features the domestic champions of the leading competitions from ⁠the region, will ⁠see the league phase expanded from 24 to 32 teams.
The qualifying rounds will start on August 11, ‌with the draw for the league phase to be held in Kuala Lumpur ‌on ‌August 18 and play commencing on September 14.

BERLIN, July 28 (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz's CEO pledged on Tuesday to shield its U.S. business from a possible sales ban, as concerns in Washington over ‌the German carmaker's Chinese investors threaten it with exclusion from one of its few remaining ‌growth markets.
The U.S. Senate Commerce Committee approved legislation last week to toughen a ban on Chinese automakers entering the U.S. market that could, in theory, bar Mercedes from selling vehicles there, since its top two shareholders are Chinese.
"If we need to make adjustments to comply with anything, we will make sure that we protect our presence and our business in the U.S.," CEO Ola Kaellenius said, as ‌the company reported second-quarter results.
"We are ⁠not naive about the geopolitical environment and the competition between the United States and China."

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against several players for a post-match brawl following Spain's 1-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup final on July 19.

The vice-president of the German FA (DFB) on Wednesday slammed FIFA's controversial plans to sell stakes in its competitions, including the World Cup, as "an outright attack on football".
FIFA announced Tuesday it was set to create a semi-private subsidiary which would sell part of its business operations in the World Cup and other competitions, hoping to raise $4.2 billion.
The plan would still have to be approved by the 38-member FIFA council and the majority of its 211 member **** ociations. FIFA said it intends to present the plans to the council soon.
Hans-Joachim Watzke, the DFB vice-president who is also president of Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and a vice-president of UEFA's executive committee, joined the chorus critical of the proposal.
"Many in European football see FIFA's plans as an outright attack on football. I share this view. A line has been crossed here," Watzke told Germany's Kicker.

President Trump's campaign for lower interest rates in the U.S. faces another setback this week at the meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Wall Street ***** ysts have generally come to the conclusion that the FOMC will hold rates steady, if not hike them—and Trump's own foreign policy is an underlying factor.

The FOMC, led by central bank chairman Kevin Warsh, will meet Tuesday and Wednesday of this week to discuss progress toward its targets of maximum employment and inflation at 2%.

It is the latter task that has caused the Fed some difficulty over the past few years. At the time of writing, inflation stands at 3.5%—a drop from May to June, but still elevated compared with the start of the year and the Fed's target.
Part of that reading has come from higher fuel prices, up 15.7% from a year ago. While pressure in this category is beginning to fade (down 4.9% May to June), prices remain elevated as a result of conflict in the Middle East, choking global oil supply as a result.
There is little sign of a resolution between Washington and Tehran in sight. While the two sides are not currently engaged in active military conflict, as they have been over the past fortnight, no official ceasefire has been announced. While the fragile pause of fire allows ***** e for diplomacy to proceed, neither side has indicated they will capitulate over control of the Strait of Hormuz—the key shipping lane in the movement of oil around the planet.
Trump's foreign policy is therefore standing in the way of Warsh's path to a cut—Wall Street ***** ysts highlighted at the start of the week.
Bank of America's base case is for a hold this month, wrote chief U.S. economist Aditya Bhave and his team: "With markets now pricing nearly 10 [basis points] of hikes in July, Chair Warsh faces a difficult choice. There has long been an elephant in the Federal Open Market Committee's room as it tries to accomplish its mission of promoting maximum employment and stable prices. It's just much, much bigger now, and it's hard to ignore a $2 trillion elephant.
That's roughly how much the US government is issuing in new Treasury bills and bonds each year as the country's budget deficit swells. Its massive spending problem isn't new: The US has run a deficit for more than two decades, helped along by the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. But the economy is looking relatively healthy now, with inflation down from its decades-high record in 2022, shrinking to 3.5% in June. Weekly jobless claims just dropped to their lowest level since 1969. And yet the government is still issuing increasing amounts of debt. Economists say it's unsustainable.
Reducing the federal deficit may be Congress's job, but the central bank, led by Chair Kevin Warsh, has to contend with the economic effects of Treasury borrowing as it determines whether to hike, cut or hold interest rates steady. A committee that already is split on where interest rates should head will gather this week to decide what's next as a growing chorus of experts point to the problem the federal deficit poses.

Rohit silenced critics with a match-winning century in the series finale, registering his 34th ODI hundred amid speculation that the Lord's fixture could be his final international appearance. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta believes there is no need to question Rohit and Kohli's places in the side, but stressed that both must make an immediate impact whenever a series begins instead of taking time to settle.

"That has to be a conversation with everyone, not just them (Kohli and Rohit), that they have to start the series well and hit the ground running. That is a challenge. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters Thursday the Protect College Sports Act is not likely to reach the floor for a vote before the session ends in two weeks.
The bipartisan bill introduced in May by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) addresses a wide-range of issues in college sports, from eligibility and transfer rules to regulations for compensating players.
The bill, which advanced out of committee last month, has drawn support from the NCAA and many Division I conferences, but not the Big Ten and SEC, the wealthiest and most powerful leagues. Advancing through committee markup is the furthest a college sports bill has made it in Congress; a House bill called the SCORE Act advanced through committee last year but never got to the floor for a vote.
Big Ten and SEC officials have been working with Cruz, Cantwell and other co-sponsors in recent weeks to modify the bill. The two conferences have a variety of issues with the bill, including spending limits it would impose on player compensation and restrictions on conference expansion.
Lawmakers have said there has been some progress on those negotiations, but the bigger issue appears to be the legislative calendar. The senate has only two weeks left in the session before going on summer recess starting Aug. 8.

Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) said Wednesday that Congress has a "culture of creepiness" when it came to members approaching and soliciting staffers.
Cammack told MeidasTouch's Pablo Manríquez that she "wouldn't feel comfortable sending" her "daughter to work here" in the current congressional environment.
Her comments came after Rep. Jeff Crank (R-Colo.) unveiled a resolution that would mandate lawmakers to confidentially disclose relationships with staffers in other offices or committees to the House Ethics Committee.

A major Texas Longhorns recruit is suiting up to play for them a year early. Five-star cornerback John Meredith is reclassifying from 2027 to 2026, head coach Steve Sarkisian said at SEC Media Days. That means he will be playing for next season's Longhorns.
"I'm more than ready. Looking forward to getting to campus and am ready to compete," Meredith said to Hayes Fawcett of On3. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound corner is ranked as the No. 2 corner and No. 12 prospect in the nation.
Part of this comes from his high school status. He tried transferring from Euless Trinity to North Crowley, but the District 11-6A executive committee ruled him ineligible to play his senior season. The ruling allows him to play a season early.
The Longhorns are expected to start a relatively young secondary after corner Jahdae Barron was drafted in the first round. Sophomores Graceson Littleton and Kade Phillips are expected to take big roles in the secondary, and Brad Spencer and Jelani McDonald are the only seniors in the secondary.
It makes all the sense for Meredith, who could have NFL potential, and he gets to train with a Texas staff that just developed Barron. "He provides great length, great speed, tremendous man-to-man ability," Sarkisian said at SEC Media Days. "Very confident, very aggressive. All the attributes you want in a defensive back… It's not a secret why he was a top two or three player in the country in the 2027 class. We'll see how far we can take him."

TAMPA, Fla. — If the rest of the world could be as normal about Arch Manning as he is, there never would have been Heisman Trophy expectations at the beginning last season or a bandwagon exodus of insane proportions when he looked like a typical first-year starting quarterback for nearly half the season.
Manning didn't ask to be anointed as the biggest star in college football before proving anything on the field, but it defined everything about the reaction to Texas' 2025 season. From the crush of publicity in August, to the doom-and-gloom that followed early losses, to the idea that Texas was wronged by the College Football Playoff committee after finishing with a flourish, every narrative turn felt emotionally overwrought.
Now, as Texas enters another season with a loaded roster and a Manning-led offense, one of two things will happen: Either we will learn that the expectations came one year too early or we are about to make the same mistake twice.
"I think last season he found out a lot about himself," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday at SEC media days. "Any time we're faced with adversity and we get on the other side of it, you gain confidence. I think you see a different leader in him. United States forward Balogun was expected to miss his side's last-16 tie against Belgium after being shown a straight red card during their 2-0 win over Bosnia- Herzegovina.
But, after an intervention from US President Donald Trump, the one-match ban was suspended for 12 months. No reason was given, beyond citing a rule that allows punishments to be suspended.
Balogun started the match, which Belgium won 4-1.
In a statement provided to the BBC, NFF president Lise Klaveness said the federation had reacted with "strong concern" and a decision on whether or not to make a complaint would be made at its next board meeting.

Rep. Jeff Crank (R-Colo.) on Wednesday introduced a resolution requiring House lawmakers to disclose relationships with staffers of other offices or committees to the lower chamber's Committee on Ethics.
Crank's resolution proposes upholding the existing ban on lawmakers from dating their staffers or staffers of a committee they serve on. It also proposes mandating lawmakers confidentially disclose relationships with staffers in other offices or committees to the Ethics panel.
If the circumstances of the relationship changes, members must then give "prompt notification" to the committee.
Under the House Code of Official Conduct, members cannot engage in a "sexual relationship" with their staffers or staffers of committees they work on, with an exception for marriage.
While lawmakers cannot engage in "unwelcome ***** ual advances or conduct" to House employees, the code of conduct does not explicitly bar relationships between members and staffers of other offices and committees.

Norway's football chief told The Times they are set to make a formal complaint to FIFA over the suspension of Folarin Balogun's World Cup ban because it has put "the whole game at risk".
Lise Klaveness, the president of the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF), says she will seek the backing of her board at a meeting on August 6 to lodge the complaint with FIFA's ethics committee over an incident that "should not have happened".
Klaveness told AFP the intention is to "include the Balogun affair" in a complaint already filed by the NFF over FIFA president Gianni Infantino awarding football's governing body's inaugural Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump, which was widely ridiculed.
"I will bring it to a board meeting and discuss with my board, and then we do it," Klaveness told The Times in an interview published on Thursday.
"To me, it should be in the same sphere of ethical complaint."
