Bear markets are a normal part of investing in the stock market. **** ody knows when the next one will arrive, but it will eventually arrive with 100% certainty. The time to prepare is before you face the fear that comes with big market downturns. That's why you should consider owning companies like Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), Medtronic (NYSE: MDT), Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), and Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG).
But there are two pieces to the story here. First, they all operate in economically resilient industries. Second, they all have incredible dividend track records. Here's a quick look at each one.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
To be fair, you may not be happy about paying for healthcare, since it can be expensive. But you will still pay for it because, in the most extreme cases, it can be the difference between life and death. In less extreme cases, the difference is between a better and worse quality of life, and you'll still probably pay up. The risk of not paying simply isn't worth it.
Johnson & Johnson is a good choice if you are worried about a bear market and are looking for a safe-haven investment. It is a major player in both the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors, providing diversification. It is a Dividend King, having rewarded shareholders with more than 50 consecutive annual dividend increases. And while its yield isn't exactly huge at 2%, it is roughly twice what you'd collect from an S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) fund. J&J isn't exactly an exciting company, but it is a reliable one.

British tennis player Harriet Dart qualified for a WTA semi-final for just the second time in her career after she came from a set down to beat Paula Badosa in the quarter-final of the Guangzhou Open on Friday.
The 30-year-old produced one of the biggest wins of her career, coming back from a set down to secure a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory and book her place in the final four of a WTA tournament for the first time since the Transylvania Open in 2024.
Dart had to come through two rounds of qualifying before beating Tatiana Prozorova, Janice Tjen and now Badosa, who had to receive medical attention twice in the match. She will face either Xinran Sun or Claire Liu for a place in her first WTA final.
In an on-court interview, Dart said: "It was an incredible battle. I thought Paula started really strongly. I was always behind, but I knew going in that it was going to be an incredibly tough match.
"I really needed to hang in there in the tough moments, and maybe I'd get a chance. It's been a very long time since I've been in the business end of a (WTA) tournament, so I'm very proud of that."

The Green Bay Packers took down the visiting Carolina Panthers on "Thursday Night Football" to open Week 8 in the NFL. The big stats to know: Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes and Josh Jacobs scored twice, while the Packers defense produced six sacks and held the Panthers to just 3.7 yards per play.
Five other stats to explain the Packers' 27-19 win over the Panthers:
The Packers pressured Bryce Young on 48.9 percent of his dropbacks on Thursday night, and he completed only seven passes for 41 yards and took six sacks while pressured, per Next Gen Stats. Brenton ******* Jr. (6), Dani Dennis-Sutton and Lukas Van Ness (5) led the way in the pressure department for the Packers, who consistently won at the line of scrimmage and forced Young into rushed decisions or improvised throws. Because of the pass protection issues, Young completed only two passes thrown more than 10 yards downfield and attempted only one pass more than 20 yards downfield.
While Bryce Young languished under pressure, Jordan Love consistently got the ball out of his hands quick and on time. Per Next Gen Stats, Love completed 23 of 25 passes thrown in under 2.5 seconds after the snap, completing negating any pass-rush. His 23 "quick" completions were the most in a game by a quarterback this season and by far the most in his career, beating the 19 he had during Week 7 in 2024. Two of his three touchdowns came on quick throws under 2.5 seconds. The Panthers tried to blitz Love, but he consistently found quick answers to beat potential pressure.
The Packers turned the ball over three times: Coleman Owen's fumble on the opening kickoff return, Christian Watson's fumble in the second quarter and Jordan Love's interception to start the fourth quarter. But the Panthers turned those three takeaways into all of three points. And the field goal came after Owen's fumble set up the Panthers inside the 30-yard line. Turnovers can be huge momentum-turning plays in games, but not if a defense stands tall. Jonathan Gannon's group made sure mistakes made didn't turn into a run of points for the Panthers.

What looked like it would be a back-and-forth game between the Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers, but the Packers have run away with it, scoring 21 unanswered points since mid-way through the second quarter.
They added to their lead with a four-yard receiving touchdown from running back Josh Jacobs on their opening drive of the second half. Jacobs now has two touchdowns in the game, one rushing and one receiving. This is his first game with multiple touchdowns since Green Bay's loss to the Denver Broncos last season.
Here is a look at Jacobs' receiving touchdown, courtesy of the NFL's official social media:
The Panthers had not scored since their touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Since then, they have punted the ball twice, and quarterback Bryce Young has thrown an interception. Their opening drive of the second half ended in a turnover on downs at midfield. However, the Panthers were able to get a field goal on their next drive, making Green Bay's lead only 14 points.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The Ford Expedition rumbled to a stop and Cindy Banda's bedazzled flip-flops landed on the asphalt of the Houston cancer center's vast parking lot. She threaded through the rows of cars, a tally of patients who gather here to sit with chemotherapy needles or lie on radiation machines.
The elevator dinged open. A year ago in this building, surgeons removed Banda's right breast, and she still didn't know whether treatment had expunged the cancer from her body. Doctors had told her it would be tough to beat.
"I'm more of a positive person myself," Banda said, now sitting with a white wristband in a dim waiting room. But the bills are harder to dismiss, and the single mother with six children in her care repeated something like a mantra. "Keep the house. Keep the cars. And just keep the kids stable."
That's true for many Americans, as rising healthcare costs leave more families with a sinking feeling after seeing the bill for surgery or medication. Heading into the Nov. 3 midterm elections, about half of registered voters said healthcare costs are a major problem for them and their families, up from a little more than one-third four years ago, according to a Fox News poll from September.
With party control of Congress at stake, registered voters are nearly twice as likely to say they trust Democrats over Republicans to handle healthcare, according to an ******* ociated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll from the same month. Those frustrations, combined with broader concerns over rising prices, have sapped support for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.

SAO PAULO, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won a historic fourth term on Sunday, the country's electoral court said, in a shock result that defied polls, precedent and global anti-incumbent sentiment to put the brakes on a wave of right-wing election victories across Latin America.
However, his opponent Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, refused to accept defeat and said he would ask for the result to be annulled due to a Sunday ruling from a Supreme Court justice that extended voting for two hours.
Bolsonaro led the election's first round but lost in the runoff by over 4 million votes, rattling Brazilian financial markets which had bet on his victory. His refusal to concede defeat has echoes of his father's reaction after losing to Lula in 2022. Jair Bolsonaro never accepted his loss and was later sentenced by the Supreme Court to 27-years in prison for plotting a coup to remain in power.
The scale of Flavio Bolsonaro's loss to Lula — by more than twice his father's losing margin — and the fact his campaign also asked for an extension due to rains in the conservative-leaning south make any annulment unlikely, **** ysts said.

Reading Women fought back from 3-1 down at half-time to claim a thrilling 5-3 victory over Chesham United at The Meadow on Sunday.
Chesham made a flying start, with Holly Fitzgerald and Ruby Slade scoring within two minutes of each other to put the hosts 2-0 ahead. Alice Curr pulled one back for the Royals, but United restored their two-goal advantage before the break when Henrietta Cunnison headed home from a corner to make it 3-1 at the break.
The first half was made even worse after an injury to Leah Why, last weekend's hat-trick hero, who hobbled off with ****** istance from two members of the Reading coaching team before being taken to hospital for further tests.
Reading bounced back with a determined second half, however. Bethan Poole struck first to give the Royals renewed vigour before Nat Cowell scored twice to complete the turnaround and put Reading in front, before Ellie Luscombe opened her account for the season and added a fifth goal, capping off an impressive turnaround and putting the result beyond doubt.
In the most autumnal of conditions, with torrential rain falling throughout the afternoon, the Royals displayed grit, tenacity and strength of character, fighting back to secure their second consecutive away league win of the season.

Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers bashes Buccaneers' home field for safety concerns appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to leave Raymond James Stadium on Sunday with a 26-19 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, despite securing the comeback win, the Steelers quarterback expressed considerable frustration after the game over the condition of Tampa Bay's home-field surface.
Following the game, Rodgers openly criticized the playing surface at Raymond James Stadium, raising concerns about the potential risks it poses to players' safety.
"It's got to be one of the worst surfaces in the league," Rodgers said. "We're talking about player safety. I'm very thankful to not get hurt. I've gotten hurt twice on this field, in my opinion, because of the turf. I don't think it's very safe out there."

Trent Alexander-Arnold has struggled at Real Madrid, and his career at the club could take another unwanted turn after Jose Mourinho overlooked the right-back for Sunday's victory over Sevilla.
Real Madrid secured an impressive 4-1 win against Sevilla, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice, Arda Guler finding the net, and Yan Diomande continuing his fine run.
However, Alexander-Arnold's absence from the starting XI for the second game stood out. He didn't even get minutes off the bench.
Mourinho opted to deploy midfielder Fede Valverde at right-back, leaving actual right-backs Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries on the bench.
The decision raises further questions about Alexander-Arnold's standing in Madrid.

Jets' Garrett Wilson reasons with stunningly quiet day in loss to Patriots appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Jets were unable to defeat the New England Patriots on Sunday. New York made it more of a game late than it had been in the first half. But in the end, they couldn't get anything going. A major reason for this was the rather quiet day from wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
For most of the game, Wilson wasn't targeted much. In fact, the ball went his way just twice before the fourth quarter. He ended the game with four catches and 44 yards on six targets. After the game, he spoke about the lack of action his way.
"I try and reason it in my head because we've got a whole nother fourth quarter and I know that the game can change at any moment. Just try and keep playing my role, waiting for that moment that they want to call on me," the Jets wide receiver said, via SNY Jets.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott completed 34 of 54 passes for 258 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a Week 6 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Prescott also ran twice for seven yards.
SOURCE: USA TODAY
Why It Matters: Dallas' high-powered offense has sputtered the last two weeks, and Prescott has now gone four straight games with just one touchdown pass. It was also his second straight outing with multiple INTs. As bad as it was, you could argue it should've been worse -- a third interception was wiped away on a dubious roughing-the-passer penalty, and his only TD pass on the night came in the closing minute down 16 points (following another skaky roughing call). A matchup with the sputtering Eagles is on deck. We'll see if Prescott can rebound against a division rival. While he remains a QB1 based on talent, his production has reached a point where you should be looking at your other quarterback's matchups before plugging Prescott in.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Jordan Love threw a touchdown pass and also scored on a 1-yard keeper and the Green Bay Packers held Dallas' high-powered offense in check and beat the Cowboys 23-13 in a penalty-filled game Sunday night.
Love went 23 of 41 for 276 yards to help the Packers improve to 11-1-1 in their last 13 meetings with the Cowboys, including a 40-all tie last season at Arlington, Texas. A 9-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden capped Green Bay's first series and put the Packers ahead for good.
The Packers (4-2) have won three straight as they await the return of three-time Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs, who comes off the commissioner's exempt list Monday. Jacobs hasn't played all season and pleaded no contest last month to two misdemeanor charges stemming from an altercation with his then-girlfriend in May.
Green Bay intercepted Dak Prescott twice to thwart scoring opportunities. Prescott went 34 of 54 for 258 yards. He threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Flournoy with 44 seconds left, but couldn't connect with CeeDee Lamb on a 2-point conversion attempt.
The game featured 22 penalties — 11 by each team. Dallas had 108 penalty yards, while Green Bay had 96.

The Dallas Cowboys came into Lambeau Field on Sunday Night Football with a high-powered offense. Dak Prescott and company led the offense in many drive-based statistics, including the percentage of offensive drives ending in a score, plays per drive, and yards per drive.
Against Jonathan Gannon's aggressive Green Bay Packers defense, the Cowboys managed just seven points on nine offensive drives as the green and gold expanded their league-leading interception numbers. Evan Williams and rookie Brandon Cisse each picked off Dak Prescott, who was under pressure all night long, as the defense led the way in a 23-13 win that improved the Packers' record to 4-2.
Prescott's counterpart, Jordan Love, shook off an early interception of his own to put up a high-quality performance. That pick could have been a truly game-changing play, as it was originally returned for a touchdown that would have tied the game at 7 early on. Instead, the scoring return was nullified on review and the Packers' defense ended up getting a stop to keep Dallas off the scoreboard. The Packers' offense went on to convert each of their first seven third-down opportunities and finished 11-of-18 for the game as Love delivered under pressure time and time again.
Ultimately, Love failed to record multiple touchdown passes for the first time in a game all season, but it wasn't for lack of trying; he saw three potential touchdown passes get dropped by his receivers, but still managed to throw for 276 yards. Matthew Golden was the biggest offender, with two of those dropped scores and a third drop later in the game, but he did end the game with an excellent stat line: six catches for 104 yards and the only receiving touchdown of the game. Additionally, Love did end up being responsible for a second touchdown, getting the Packers' other score on a quarterback sneak just before halftime as the team led 17-0 heading into the break.
The Green Bay defense kept up its excellent play in the second half. After giving up a single touchdown early in the third quarter, they forced turnovers on downs twice in the fourth before allowing a touchdown in garbage time while holding a 16-point lead — though they came up with a big stop on the two-point conversion to largely put an end to the game.

The Defense secretary praised the ship's crew for its resilience and dedication.
The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group will return to its homeport of San Diego on Thursday, concluding a 10-month deployment to the Middle East where it played a key role in the war with Iran and set a new record of 265 days in between ports of call.
In all, the ship will have spent 321 days on deployment, the second-longest since the end of the Cold War. The longest deployment was set earlier this year when the carrier USS Gerald R. Ford returned from a 326-day deployment to Europe, the Caribbean and the Middle East.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited the Lincoln on Wednesday ahead of its return home and praised the ship's crew for its resilience and dedication during the lengthy deployment.
Hegseth told sailors gathered on the carrier's flight deck that he had extended their deployment twice -- in recent years typical carrier strike deployments have lasted seven months.

Taylor Swift is reportedly generating nearly twice as much jersey search demand as her husband, Travis Kelce. This is according to a new study conducted across the US. The findings highlight how strongly Swift's connection to the NFL star continues to influence interest in football merchandise.
A new ******* ysis by Casino.guru found that searches for a "Taylor Swift jersey" account for around 77% of the search demand recorded for the most-searched NFL player jersey in the country. The figure would place Taylor Swift among the five most in-demand jersey searches if her name were compared directly with NFL players, the study said.
The research also found a notable gap between Swift and Travis Kelce. Searches for Swift's jersey were nearly twice as high as searches for Kelce's jersey across the US. "Search demand for Taylor Swift jerseys is also nearly twice as high as it is for husband Travis Kelce jerseys across the U.S.," Casino.guru data ******* yst Max Barlow wrote in the study. He added that the search volume would "place her inside the top five most in-demand jerseys if compared directly with NFL players."
According to the ******* ysis, Swift also generated more than twice the jersey interest of the state's leading NFL player, Jaxson Dart. However, the study measured online search volume to estimate potential sales interest rather than using audited retail sales figures.
The latest figures contrast sharply with the surge in Kelce's jersey sales after Swift attended one of his games in 2023. Swift watched Kelce play from a suite at Arrowhead Stadium on September 24, 2023. After her appearance, Fanatics told the ******* ociated Press that Kelce entered the NFL's top five jersey sellers. His merchandise sales jumped nearly 400% across Fanatics' sites, according to NPR. Before the surge, Kelce ranked around 19th among NFL jersey sellers.

AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV) was trading at around $263 on October 5, up 14.18% over twelve months. Its payout ratio is 190.40%. The company distributes nearly twice what it reports as profit.
A dividend that large is either about to be cut or is being paid out of something the earnings line does not show.
READ ALSO: Here is Why Tripadvisor (TRIP) is a Bad Investment at Today's Price
AbbVie reported net income of $6.27 billion and generated $16.87 billion of free cash flow. Dividends are paid from the second number, so a ratio measured against the first is describing depressed earnings rather than a company living beyond its means.
The margins show what depresses them. Operating margin is 40.04%. Net margin is 9.80%. Thirty points vanish between those lines, and where they vanish matters. Costs that high sitting below the operating line are not the business failing to earn. They are the amortization of a drug portfolio AbbVie bought rather than discovered, plus interest on the debt that bought it.

Coca-Cola posted its strongest Trademark volume growth in 17 years, and ADP's operating cash flow covers its dividend more than twice over while still funding buybacks.

Yield is relatively easy to find. A dividend that keeps arriving through recessions, patent cliffs and housing slumps is much harder to find, and that kind of reliability is the hook for this group. Every name below covers its payout with real cash flow, has a long record of raises and keeps its payout ratio at a level that leaves room for mistakes. Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) sets the standard: management says its latest increase marks the 70th consecutive year of dividend increases and 136th consecutive year of dividend payments, putting it firmly in the Dividend Kings club (we ranked ten of them by valuation in a free report here). FYEE beat JEPI on a $100,000 investment in 2026, paying $7,023 versus $6,070, but FYEE's quarterly payout has fallen from $0.82 to $0.56 per share.
JEPI's monthly distributions better match recurring expenses for retirees, while FYEE's quarterly schedule suits investors who reinvest or can wait between payments.
FYEE's lower share price ($30 vs. JEPI's $56) means $100,000 buys nearly twice as many shares, which is why it delivers more cash despite lower per-share payouts.
