I've used the word "penultimate" seemingly endless times in the last month or so, so here's one more. The WooSox capped off their finale in Lehigh Valley (Phillies AAA), finishing the PENULTIMATE series of 2026 in dramatic fashion despite outplaying the IronPigs for most of the game. Gage Ziehl had a gritty if not spectacular performance, pitching into the sixth and coming back from being taken yard in the fourth without his confidence shaken. All told, the 23-year-old righty struck out eight to bring his total to 126 in 116 innings pitched (96/85, respectively, of those being in Portland) and is really shaping up into someone to watch in 2027. The pitching staff as a whole issued zero walks despite being taken for nine hits, but the game never looked out of control save for when Noah Song came in to let two runs up in the sixth.
Luckily, though, the WooSox offense had a home run derby, sending five over the fence, including two from Allan Castro. That second one hoisted the WooSox from a deficit to a lead that Sam McWilliams wouldn't give up. Arias also hit his 24th home run of the season (and his 5th in Triple-A.)
Rain cancelled the last game of the season against Binghamton (Mets AA) in an anticlimactic fashion. But what a season it was for the Sea Dogs.
The season began with interested eyes watching Franklin Arias become an absolute hitting machine in the spring, along with Anthony Eyannson dealing, only for the former to be promoted to Triple-A and the latter dealt to Baltimore (or rather, Chesapeake) in the Adley Rutschman deal. Still, Brooks Brannon raked, the team had 8 walk-off wins and generally found ways to come up on top. The pitching staff headed by Hayden Mullins, in his own right a guy to watch, pitched a combined no hitter in April (but not a shutout). And Justin Gonzales looks formidable as an everyday outfielder a few years in the future. Overall, the cupboard is not as fully stocked as some teams, but there's some players to feel good about starting to make their mark in the mid-levels of the farm.

Red Sox Seem to Make Franklin Arias Decision After Latest Report originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Right after Major League Baseball's trade deadline, there was a sense that the Boston Red Sox could have called up Franklin Arias. The idea of bringing up Arias would be simple: the Red Sox believed he could come in and make an impact, and if he did, they'd be a better team come playoff time.
Instead of that being the case, the Red Sox returned Trevor Story, allowing the veteran to come back and prove why he's one of the better shortstops in Major League Baseball.
Story hasn't been perfect since returning, but he's a guy who should be trusted.
As for Arias, it remains unclear what the Red Sox will do until something happens. However, according to the latest report, it doesn't look like Boston is going in that direction.

Red Sox could upgrade infield with .957 OPS top prospect instead of Trevor Story originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox are looking to make some upgrades to their roster in September for a chance at a deep postseason run in a wide-open American League.
With a strong pitching staff in both the rotation and bullpen, and Roman Anthony set to bolster the outfield, the only area worth looking to upgrade would be their infield. Trevor Story is coming back from injury and could be an option.
But Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report called out .957 OPS prospect Franklin Arias as a possible September call-up option for Boston, who could be a bigger upgrade than Story for a postseason-bound Red Sox team.
"Already widely regarded as the best defensive infielder in the Red Sox system, Franklin Arias has taken his offensive game to new heights this season," Reuter writes.

The WooSox didn't get much offense in Syracuse (Mets AAA) and, as a result, got walked off with two outs. But it shouldn't have even gotten to that point since they were getting outhit 11-3, so there's some people on the squad we need to tip our caps to. Blake Wehunt didnt' quite make it five innings but kept all but one run off the board despite allowing seven total baserunners. Allen Castro drove a late run in to make this a tie game in the 9th, and Franklin Arias and Romy Gonzalez hit doubles; Arias' scored a pair of runs.
Don't look now, but Arias already has 22 RBIs since his call up to Triple-A a month ago, and his total in 2026 sits at 74. That's a good season by any account, but keep in mind that Arias batted first for a lot of his time in Double-A so that total might be even higher if he wasn't hitting so many solo shots to start the game. That he's consistently been the youngest at his level and hasn't gone more than three days before finding a groove are very, very good signs going forward (as in, after the lockout, in this writer's humble opinion.) Still, Arias is slashing .291/.357/.488(!) in a sample size that is growing bigger and bigger against guys who are getting better and better. And maybe, just maybe, it was all part of Breslow's plan to waltz straight from the Trevor Story (0-4, 2 K's on Friday) contract into Franklin Arias mowing down big league pitching. (And it was just how he drew it up, even down to Andruw Monasterio playing so well this year, right?)
Yes, it was Roman Anthony rehab night against the Fightin Phils (Phillies AA.) Yes, he drove in a run, his third in as many games. Devin Futrell also had a good night on the mound and shoved through six innings even after allowing a first-run home run, displaying a line that could have been plenty enough to take a decision win with a bit more pop at the plate: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.
But the real story of the night – aside from Anthony getting closer to beign back with the big league club just in time to be one of the team's "September call-ups" – has got to be how good Justin Gonzales has looked in general this year, but especially since his promotion to Double-A. He hit a triple and his OPS stands at over 1. These are numbers that folks made a big deal out of when Arias started the season hot this year, and there's reason to believe that it's time to pay attention to the outfielder, who won't turn 20 until New Years Eve.
I will not jinx the Drive into saying they might be able to sleepwalk into a win Saturday following a rain delay in which they had a lead. The last time I did that, they sweated out a 7-run performance in the remaining innings and gutted a win out by the skin of their teeth. What I will say is that it's looking good in the third against Winston-Salem (White Sox High-A.) "First" pitch of the double-header is today at 4:30.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — It's been slim pickings this year for Yankees position player prospects for the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades and they lost three of their best ones this month, all infielders.
First, Kaeden Kent went to the Giants in a trade on Aug. 3 then two players were promoted to the Double-A Somerset Patriots, Roderick Arias on Aug. 4 and Core Jackson on Aug. 11.
That left Hudson Valley with two Yankees position player prospects ranked among their top 30 by MLB Pipeline — and one of them, Wilson Rodriguez, is done for the year with a thumb injury.
The over/under for Wednesday's AL East clash between the Yankees and the Orioles is set at 9 total runs on BetMGM. Our comprehensive BetMGM Sportsbook review provides an in-depth guide on how to use their app.
The Renegades do have Eric Genther, a left-handed hitter who switched from left field to catcher this year. Opponents are running like crazy on him, but his coaching staff is seeing steady progress.

Daniel Palencia had a good year as Cubs closer in 2025 despite some injury issues. He had more time on the IL this year, first with an oblique strain and then a flexor injury.
Today, the Cubs activated Palencia from the injured list after five rehab outings, the last two of which were pretty good. He is not expected to immediately return to the closer role, instead serving as what manager Craig Counsell calls an "out-getter" in whatever situation he's needed. Overall this year in 19 MLB games, Palencia has a 2.70 ERA, 1.380 WHIP, three saves and 19 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.
To make room for Palencia on the 26-man active roster, right-hander Javier ******* ad has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. I don't need to explain to you how this makes most Cubs fans feel. The only thing I can say is that ******* ad is likely back on Sept. 1 when rosters expand.
In addition, the Cubs added infielder Gabriel Arias, acquired Wednesday on waivers from the Mets, to the 26-man active roster. To make room for Arias, infielder Owen Miller was designated for ******* ignment. He's likely to clear waivers and will almost certainly be given the opportunity to remain in the organization.
As always, we await developments. Today's game preview will post at 7 p.m. CT.

Red Sox Fans Want Franklin Arias, but They're Forgetting One Thing originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
If the Boston Red Sox ultimately decide to call up youngster Franklin Arias, there are going to be some decisions that have to be made with the remainder of their roster.
The one promising thing for Boston is that Sept. 1 allows teams to call up two extra players, as rosters expand from 26 to 28.
With the hope that Arias will make his debut, many fans think that will probably be the time Boston decides to call him up.
However, it feels like some fans are forgetting something: the Red Sox active roster doesn't have Trevor Story on it.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets called up infielder Christopher Morel from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.
Morel, who has a pair of 20-homer seasons in the majors, was selected to the big league roster as New York prepared to begin a three-game series against the surging San Diego Padres.
Interim manager Andy Green said the 27-year-old Morel, a right-handed hitter, will start at first base Tuesday night against Padres left-hander Robbie Ray.
To open a roster spot, infielder Gabriel Arias was designated for ***** ignment.
Morel is a .220 career hitter with 74 home runs, 211 RBIs and a .702 OPS in 499 major league games over five seasons from 2022-26. He has played for the Cubs, Rays and Marlins.

Red Sox Named Suitor for $341M Star, but They Shouldn't Be for Franklin Arias Reason originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox's interest in a shortstop over the past year or so has been rather interesting for many reasons. Not only do the Red Sox already have a veteran at shortstop in Trevor Story, but they have one of the best prospects in Major League Baseball in Franklin Arias.
Arias, who many figure will be one of the better players in baseball once he gets settled into the league, has absolutely torn up the minor leagues. There's even a scenario in which he could be called up this year if the Red Sox need him.
However, the interest in shortstops has already been well reported, as Boston has shown interest in Elly De La Cruz and others over the past few months. A recent suggestion also had them in the mix for another superstar shortstop, Francisco Lindor.
Lindor, who is still an elite player, would be a huge addition to any contending team this winter.

Expected Lockout Could Cause Red Sox to Not Promote Franklin Arias originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Major League Baseball's expected lockout in December will bring a ton of questions about what the league looks like in the short and long term. Long-term-wise, there is an expectation that a salary cap could be implemented. It remains uncertain what will really happen on that front, but there are at least some rumblings about it.
Short-term-wise, there are decisions that could be made on prospects that have an impact.
That includes one on Boston Red Sox youngster Franklin Arias, with two reporters from the Boston Herald recently outlining why he might not get called up over the next month or so.
"With a lockout all but certain to begin this December, teams won't be able to communicate with any player on the 40-man roster until a new labor deal is reached. Those players also won't be able to train at club facilities, an especially problematic issue for prospects and minor leaguers who won't be allowed to attend minor league spring training, which will continue even if a new labor deal hasn't been reached and big league camps remain shut down.

Trevor Story's Injury Could Be Factor in Red Sox Calling Franklin Arias Up originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Every team looking to win a World Series in Major League Baseball has to make some tough decisions throughout the season with young players.
The Boston Red Sox have found themselves in that situation over the past few seasons, and it looks like that's going to continue with youngster Franklin Arias. Arias, only 20 years old, seems to have the tools to succeed in Major League Baseball right away.
However, as Red Sox fans have found out in recent years, there's no guarantee that a top prospect comes up and finds success at the highest level. Still, he's absolutely torn it up in Double-A and Triple-A throughout the year, posting a .318/.404/.585 slash line.
Injuries will play a factor in that, with Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa currently out. Per the latest, it's possible that Arias could benefit from that and get called up.

Elly De La Cruz Trade Report Brings up Franklin Arias Question for Red Sox originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Reports are now indicating that the Boston Red Sox attempted to trade for Elly De La Cruz of the Cincinnati Reds.
De La Cruz, one of the better young players in Major League Baseball, would have been an incredible addition. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, however, Cincinnati decided to go in a different direction.
While it's unfortunate Boston didn't end up with the star shortstop, it also gives us a good indication of some questions that might be coming in the near future. Both of those questions should be centered around Trevor Story and Franklin Arias.
Story, currently dealing with an injury, is expected to be the short-term shortstop for the Red Sox when he returns. Arias, however, is viewed as a long-term option at the position for the organization.

Ferencvaros starting XI: Dibusz, Osvath, Raemaekers, Gomez, Cadu, Corbu, Kanichowsky, Zachariassen, Levi, Yusuf, Joseph.
Mourinho will finally have some depth in this one, so it will be interesting to see if he uses his bench a bit more than he did last week against Fiorentina. Madrid will face Deportivo next Wednesday, so it will be important for the coaching staff to manage the legs of their players carefully.

CLEVELAND — When Angel Genao was a seven-year-old, his brother urged him to become a switch hitter, and the two practiced together in the Dominican Republic.
That was the start of his baseball journey.
"He was the one who insisted on me to be a switch-hitter," Genao said via a team translator. "Actually he was the first one who gave me a baseball practice. So I attribute it to him. … He's been the one teaching me, and who told me to start switch-hitting."
Fifteen years later, that road led Genao to Cleveland, where he made his major league debut. And oh, what a debut it was.
Genao, who was promoted to the majors before the Guardians' Aug. 5 game against the New York Mets in place of the recently designated-for-assignment Gabriel Arias, hit ninth in the lineup and played third base while Jose Ramirez continues to be day-to-day with a hand issue.

Red Sox's Craig Breslow Reveals Plan for No. 1 Prospect Franklin Arias originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
With the Boston Red Sox making the decisions they did at Major League Baseball's trade deadline, moving on from some of their top prospects in a deal for Adley Rutschman, as well as a separate trade involving Marcelo Mayer, it posed the question of what the organization plans to do in the future with Franklin Arias.
Arias, a young shortstop who has made some impressive strides over his professional career, looks to be a part of the Red Sox's future in a big way.
Unfortunately for the Red Sox, some top prospects haven't performed well at the big-league level when called upon, but at just 20 years old in Double-A and Triple-A, Arias has really swung the bat at a high level.
He's slashing .310/.398/.578 on the year with 21 home runs.

The Guardians debuted their post-deadline roster last night against the woeful Mets, but they were the ones who were woeful.
Jo Adell was awesome; he left ****** ody on base. So how did the other 9 participants leave 29? Bazzana left 7, Hoskins left 6, Martinez left 5. There's 18. Arias's 4 gets us to 22. More on him in a minute. Lowe 3, Kwan 2. 27. DeLauter and Rocchio 1 each. 29. Austin Hedges, who was hitless, was the only new friend of Adell's who also left 0.
The gawdawful situational hitting wasn't the only fundamental that the Guardians neglected last night.
It was Rocchio who made the last out at third, and it was Arias who made a terrible throw for the error. He might be DFA'd by the time you read this becauuuuuuusssseeee…..
Let's hope it's that, and not Jose Ramirez going back on the IL with the wrist soreness that kept him out of this game v NYM.

The Boston Red Sox made some major moves at the trade deadline, and the future of their infield has been greatly impacted.
For starters, despite many rumors, the Red Sox did not acquire a long-term shortstop. That leaves the door wide open for Franklin Arias to earn the job next season. Additionally, the Red Sox moved on from Marcelo Mayer, practically ensuring that Curtis Mead will be the team's second baseman moving forward.
As it stands right now, Willson Contreras will be the Red Sox's first baseman next season, and then he has a club option for 2028. Caleb Durbin, who has turned his season around and proven he belongs, will be the third baseman for the foreseeable future. Mead is under contract through 2030 and figures to be locked into second base.
Newly acquired catcher Adley Rutschman is under contract through next season, but is a strong extension candidate after the Red Sox gave up a haul to add him. The only question mark is at shortstop. Trevor Story is due $25 million next season, and has a $25 million club option for 2028.

Red Sox top prospect Franklin Arias may be preparing for a major position change before MLB debut originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox's farm isn't as good as it was a little over a year ago, but it still does have some gems. One of those jewels is Franklin Arias, who is ranked in the top 10 of the Top 100 prospects, No. 3 by Baseball America and No. 7 by the MLB.
Depending on the ranker, Arias is either the third or fourth-best shortstop in the minor leagues. However, a position change may be on the horizon for the 20-year-old.

Arias has always worked second base, as he has over 30 games at the position, but mainly he's been a shortstop. However, that seems to be changing.

LOS ANGELES — Say this for the Red Sox in their search for a shortstop at the trade deadline: they're not afraid to aim high.
The Red Sox had discussions with the Cincinnati Reds about Elly De La Cruz, but couldn't match up. The Reds aren't inclined to move de la Cruz, but are willing to at least listen to teams who might meet their admittedly high asking price.
According to a league source, the Red Sox offered a package mostly made up of prospects for de la Cruz, 24. The offer wasn't enough to tempt the Reds, who were more interested in young major leaguers.
The Red Sox told the Reds that they weren't willing to subtract from their major league roster in order to make a deal.
It's unknown whether the package of prospects included shortstop Franklin Arias. Arias is the Red Sox' top-rated prospect and considered by many evaluators to be among the Top 10 prospects in the game.

Multiple reports suggest that the Boston Red Sox are in the market for a long-term shortstop, and Jon Heyman named them the likeliest landing spot for Zach Neto during a livestream for Bleacher Report.
The Red Sox traded for Curtis Mead recently, and he is under contract through 2030. He will miss a chunk of time with a wrist injury, but figures to be the everyday second baseman when healthy. That leaves the Red Sox with Marcelo Mayer and Trevor Story as options to be the starting shortstop when they are healthy. Adding a long-term shortstop at the trade deadline could complicate things for their futures.
Not to mention, the Red Sox's top prospect, Franklin Arias, could be ready to debut very soon. Still, the Red Sox have checked in on CJ Abrams, Jeremy Peña, Otto Lopez and Neto. They seem to be determined to add a shortstop with some control, meaning they may be giving up on Story and Mayer.
Neto strikes out a ton, but has serious power. He has 19 homers this year and has 68 home runs in the last three seasons. He could take over as the everyday shortstop, and Mayer or Story could slide over to second base while Mead is out.

How bold do you think the Red Sox are going to be this trade deadline? The team is no doubt in a tricky situation, with a playoff berth currently in hand, but a roster that likely presents too many challenges to genuinely contend. But one ESPN insider isn't mincing words: "They are going big," says Jeff Passan. "Maybe that means getting Zach Neto from the Angels. They could try to convince Houston to move Jeremy Pena, even as the Astros try to win now, or wheedle [CJ] Abrams from Washington. The best opportunity, though, could be [Otto] Lopez, the Marlins' All-Star shortstop." (Jeff Passan, ESPN)
Lopez is having a fine season, but the shortstop that really gets the mouth watering is Bobby Witt, Jr. Is he a total pipedream? "Acquiring Witt, Kansas City's 26-year-old All-Star shortstop, would require a haul, and yes, I'd have to imagine the Royals asking price starts with Anthony and Arias. Starters Payton Tolle and Eyanson would probably also be part of the Royals' asking price." (Jen McCaffrey, The Athletic)
Otto Lopez may or may not be the answer in the middle of the diamond, but there is little question that the Red Sox need to beef up the offense. "There's been a through-line among teams that have advanced in the playoffs and particularly among those that have won: the ability to mash… Since 2020, 24 teams have reached the League Championship Series … On average, those teams have ranked sixth among all teams in regular-season runs, with 13 of the 24 ranking in MLB's top five in runs per game, and 19 finishing in the top 10." (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)
There is a slight chance that Curtis Mead will be around to help out that offense at some point this season. After returning to Boston, a specialist ruled out the need for surgery to repair his fractured wrist. "One source said that Mead was given a 'tentative' timeline of 6-8 weeks. The regular season ends eight weeks from Sunday, on September 27." (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)
Having enough offense to take an early lead could be particularly valuable for this team because, thanks to the emergence of Tyron Guerrero, the Red Sox bullpen is suddenly shortening games for the opposition. (Tim Healey, Boston Globe)

The Red Sox made an initial strike on the trade market this weekend when they made the 1-for-1 deal that sent lefty starter Connelly Early to the Nationals for breakout star Curtis Mead. It appears they aren't done, either. Here's what we're hearing on Boston's plans ahead of the trade deadline, which is Monday (August 3) at 6 p.m. ET.
º The Red Sox are keeping an open mind ahead of Monday, but according to major league officials, they're targeting three main needs. First, the club — like every contender this time of year — is interested in adding pitching depth, not just at the back end of the rotation but also in the bullpen. Secondly, catching upgrades remain on the table. Lastly — and perhaps most surprisingly — the club is in the shortstop market.
The addition of Mead at second base hasn't stopped Breslow from continuing to look for an infield bat and one rival evaluator said the belief is that the Red Sox are looking for a "long-term" option at shortstop. The market is rich with big-name candidates who may or may not move, including the Angels' Zach Neto, Houston's Jeremy Peña, the Mets' Francisco Lindor and Washington's C.J. Abrams. Considering the potential pending lockout — and a very poor position player class in free agency this winter — Boston may be looking at this deadline as an opportunity to settle that position.
That search comes with its complications. Landing a shortstop would signal the Red Sox waving the white flag on Trevor Story, whose Red Sox tenure has been defined by injuries but also a massive amount of respect for the leadership he brings. Adding Mead and a shortstop makes the pathway to regular at-bats much less clear for Marcelo Mayer moving forward. And perhaps most strikingly, it further clogs the pipes ahead of the arrival of top prospect Franklin Arias, who was just promoted to Triple-A.
"Not sure why (they're in that market) with Arias coming," said one rival scout.

MIAMI (AP) — Tanner Bibee threw 6 2/3 solid innings, Steven Kwan and Patrick Bailey hit two-run doubles and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Miami Marlins 4-1 on Saturday.
Gabriel Arias had three hits for the Guardians, who clinched the series after winning the opener 3-2 on Friday. The Marlins, who lost their first series since June 14-16 at Philadelphia, had won six consecutive home series.
Bibee (3-9) gave up one run and four hits, walked four and struck out three. Colin Holderman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.
Miami starter Eury Pérez (5-7), who pitched seven perfect innings in his previous outing at the Athletics on July 5, allowed two runs and eight hits over six innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out six.
Kwan’s double in the fourth put Cleveland ahead 2-0. Arias and Petey Halpin had consecutive singles and both scored when Kwan hit an opposite filed grounder that rolled inside the line and toward the left-field foul area.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Colson Montgomery hit a two-run homer and Kyle Teel and Tristan Peters added solo shots as the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-6 on Sunday to split a four-game series between the AL Central's top teams.
The win moved the White Sox back into first place by one game.
Gabriel Arias belted a three-run homer and rookie Chase DeLauter also connected for the Guardians, who won the first two games on walk-offs.
The finale was delayed by rain and unplayable conditions on the water-logged outfield warning track.
Just before the re-scheduled start, the umpires met both managers in the outfield to inspect the track. The grounds crew then spent 30 minutes applying quick-dry mixture and grooming the track before it was deemed safe.
