The Mets are calling up Christopher Morel from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of their series-opener against the San Diego Padres on Monday, according to multiple reports.
Morel, 27, played in 22 games with the Miami Marlins earlier in the 2026 season, but was designated for ******* ignment on June 21. He had struggled mightily with Miami, hitting just .162 with three doubles and one RBI.
New York then signed him to a minor league deal on June 30.
Since joining Syracuse, Morel has turned it around. He's hitting .321 with a 1.098 OPS, 12 home runs, and 29 RBI over 31 games. Defensively, he's seen time at first base (10 games), third base, second base, left field, and right field.
Last year with the Tampa Bay Rays, Morel hit .219 with 11 HRs and 16 doubles over 105 games. His best season in the big leagues came with the Chicago Cubs in 2023, hitting .247 with 26 home runs and 70 RBI over 107 games.

TikTok, 9:00 pm ET Amanda Serrano vs Lucrecia Manzur
From Temecula, California, for Serrano's WBO and WBA featherweight ***** les. This is a first time thing, with Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions putting a live card on TikTok rather than a more conventional broadcaster or streamer. Supporting action includes Jahmal Harvey, Avious Griffin against former Top Rank undercard staple Jackson Marinez, plus Keno Marley and Nelvie Tiafack.
From Hackney Wick, England, for the vacant European middleweight ***** le. Liddard already holds (held?) the British and Commonwealth ***** les at middleweight, but those obviously can't be on the line against the Italian Morello. Morello is 26-1 (4 KO), with his only pro loss coming back in 2019 by wide decision. He fights outside of his native Italy for the first time as a professional.
ON THE UNDERCARD: Maybe Liddard dropped at least one of his other belts? Jimmy Sains appears to be fighting for the now-vacant Commonwealth ***** le that Liddard defended his last time out. Emmanuel ***** igieg and PA Gordon also square off for the vacant English middleweight ***** le. So, lots of vacant domestic belts at middleweight are up for grabs on this show!
From Las Vegas, Nevada, for Romero's WBA welterweight ***** le. Romero is the champion and the A-side, thanks to his big decision win over Ryan Garcia in May of 2025 on that less-than-thrilling Times Square card. Lopez enters fresh off a January loss to Shakur Stevenson, and moves up to welterweight here for the first time. No idea how to take this one… At his best, Lopez is an aggressive fighter, and Romero's best ***** et is his power, so there could be fireworks if the lads decide to really mix it up. But both have brought yawns in recent outings and they're also quite close as friends, which generally makes for a lousy fight. Fingers crossed, I suppose. It'll cost you $79.99 as a standalone PPV, if that's how you consume your big fights these days.

Unbeaten George Liddard says he is living out a boyhood dream as he prepares to face Dario Morello for the vacant European middleweight **** le.
Liddard, 24, from Billericay in Essex, will face Italy's Morello at York Hall on 22 August after retaining his British and Commonwealth middleweight belts earlier this year.

"When you work so hard that it seems unreasonable that you don't achieve your goals... that just fills you with confidence." said Liddard.

This year's The Basketball Tournament is just around the corner, and La Familia, the Kentucky Wildcats alumni team, is still looking to fill out their roster, and on Tuesday they got a step closer. Per their roster page on the TBT website, Darryl Morsell will join them for this year's event.
Morsell played college basketball for Maryland from 2017 to 2021. Over those seasons, he averaged 8.7 points and 4 rebounds per game. Then, he played for Marquette for a year, and posted his best season with 13.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest.
In the past couple of tournaments, Morell played for Maryland's alumni team. He performed well for them, averaging 12.5 points per game last year. He also made multiple big shots that helped them win games.
Now, La Familia is hoping he'll do the same thing for them in this year's tournament. Their first game will be on July 18th, the first in a best-of-three matchup against the Louisville alumni squad. The winner of this year's tournament will take a $2 million prize.

Mets to sign former Cubs and Rays standout slugger to new contract originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
With the New York Mets still struggling to get much of anything going this season, it's getting to the point where the Mets should seriously consider selling this season by the August 3 trade deadline.
But that doesn't mean the Mets can't add to their roster in hopes of finding pieces for the future. If they sell, there will be open roster spots, and using those on intriguing players who might not otherwise have an MLB roster spot would be a smart move.
That's one reason for their most recent addition. As Will Sammon of The Athletic reports, the Mets are signing former Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays standout slugger Christopher Morel to a new contract.
"The Mets and Christopher Morel are in agreement on a minor-league deal, league sources tell The Athletic," Sammon reports. "The deal contains multiple opt-outs for Morel, who will report to Triple-A Syracuse."

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup starts on June 11, 2026, traditional news and social media channels will be full of pictures of the players. Many of them will be showing their tattoos.
Body art has become increasingly part of international soccer, although its prevalence can vary across geographical regions. A study of athletes participating in the 2018 World Cup found that Latin American players were the most heavily tattooed, followed by those from Oceania and Europe. African and Asian players are the least tattooed.
I have been studying tattoos and their spiritual and religious roles since 2018. Tattoos are an investment of time and money; they tend to symbolize something important in the person's life. For professional athletes, however, they take on another level of meaning.
World Cup players' tattoos offer a glimpse into what they value in their lives. Sociologist Gustavo Morello counted 226 tattoos across Argentina's 2022 World Cup squad, including those of World Cup record-holder Lionel Messi.
These athletes operate in controlled environments in which what they do and say with their bodies is highly regulated. A player cannot freely ski, ride, work out or take vacations without considering contractual obligations to companies and other investors. Most of the professionals playing in the World Cup have also signed sponsorship agreements that regulate what they can display on their social media.

Impatient Marlins welcome back Griffin Conine, DFA disappointing Christopher Morel originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Miami Marlins have been waiting.
The impatient franchise marked its time until Griffin Conine healed enough to come off the 60-day injured list. The outfielder injured his hamstring attempting to make a defensive play against the Cincinnati Reds on April 9.
Meanwhile, infielder Christopher Morel tested the front office's patience a bit too long. An offseason free-agent acquisition, Morel was expected to provide power to the Marlins' lineup, signing a one-year, $2 million deal.
He batted .162 and failed to generate a home run for 22 games.

MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins designated infielder Christopher Morel for ******* ignment before their game against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
Expected to provide a power bat when he signed a $2 million, one-year contract in the offseason, Morel struggled with injuries and production in his short Miami stint. He was batting .162 and didn't have a home run in 22 games. Although on the active roster, Morel had not played since June 10.
“Chris is a real pro. He handled himself well through the difficult tenure here and wish him the best,” Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said.
Morel began the season on the injured list after he sustained an oblique injury during batting practice before the March 27 season opener. After he was finally activated on April 27, Morel couldn’t crack the lineup, and his batting slump worsened until the club decided to cut ties.
The 26-year-old Morel hit 16 home runs in his rookie year with the Chicago Cubs in 2022 and followed it with 26 the following season. Morel was traded to Tampa Bay midway through the 2024 season. He remained with the Rays until he became a free agent at the end of 2025.

MLB ******* yst questions if Rays' offseason acquisition can turn things around originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
During the offseason, the Tampa Bay Rays got rid of quite a few outfielders. They traded Jake Mangum, Josh Lowe, and Kameron Misner while non-tendering Christopher Morel.
Needing some bodies out there, the club decided to take a chance on Cedric Mullins. The two sides agreed to a one-year, $7.5 million contract with a mutual option for the 2027 season.
But unless something changes soon, he won't be back next year. Much like his time with the New York Mets after last year's trade deadline, he has failed to get much of anything going with the bat in his hands, hitting .198/.288/.311 with six home runs and 21 runs batted in.

Four-star safety Ta’Shawn Poole has announced his top three schools. The star safety is down to the Georgia Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles and Tennessee Volunteers. Poole will look to make a major impact at any program he lands with.
Poole is one of the top recruits from the class of 2027. The talented safety would be a massive addition to Georgia’s recruiting class should he ultimately land at UGA. Poole is expected to announce his final decision in the near future. Standing at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Poole is currently projected to land at FSU despite a very strong push from coach Kirby Smart and his staff, but the Dawgs remain in the mix for now.
The four-star would instantly cement himself as one of Georgia’s top recruits should he decide to stay home. Poole is ranked as the No. 4 safety and the No. 64 overall recruit from the class of 2027, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is the fifth-best player Georgia. Poole has been nothing short of a superstar during his time at Howard High School in Macon, Georgia.
A commitment from Poole would ultimately be a major victory for the Dawgs. Georgia recently missed out on three-star safety Turmarian Moreland after he committed to Virginia Tech, and the Bulldogs will likely turn elsewhere if Poole lands with a different program.

Among the top commitments were North Miami Beach safety Andre Hyppolite (No. 32, Miami), Palm Beach Lakes athlete Turmarian Moreland (No. 43, Virginia Tech) and Lakeland edge rusher Drew Sapp (No. 59, Colorado).
The UCF Knights football program landed a pair of in-state commitments, while Wake Forest and Vanderbilt both added impact players to their secondaries.
USA TODAY Florida Network recruiting reporters Jon Santucci and Nick Wilson gave their takeaways from the second weekend in June:
Santucci: Miami. I absolutely love Andre Hyppolite's game. If the North Miami Beach safety was at another school in South Florida, everyone would know his name and his ability. He's long, rangy, physical and has the ability to add muscle to his 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame. This commitment wasn't a surprise as most expected Hyppolite to stay in Miami, but this still is a big win.

The Georgia Bulldogs lost out on a recruit to an ACC team with a lot of recruiting momentum. Three-star safety Turmarian Moreland committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies, according to Zach Blostein of 247Sports. He chose Virginia Tech over Georgia, Auburn, and Louisville.
Moreland is a three-star prospect from the class of 2027. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound safety plays high school football for Palm Beach High School in West Palm Beach, Florida. He is the No. 48 safety and No. 535 recruits in the nation.
Virginia Tech is gaining serious momentum in the recruiting trail. They're the No. 8 recruiting class in the nation and second in the ACC. The gem of their class is four-star quarterback Peter Bourque, who chose the Hokies over the Bulldogs. Bourque is the No. 6 quarterback recruit in the nation.
Georgia recently got their own gem at quarterback from the 2027 recruiting class. Four-star quarterback Colton Nussmeier, brother of former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, is the No. 12 quarterback in this class.
Georgia has the No. 21 recruiting class in the nation. They got a jolt with four-star (nearly five-star) offensive tackle Kennedee Jackson flipping from Florida, but they're looking for their first defensive back recruit. They previously had a commitment from five-star Donte Wright, but he flipped to Miami.
