Cricket Australia (CA) has opened the door to private investment in the Big Bash League (BBL), with the Melbourne Renegades set to become the first franchise offered for sale from the 2027-28 season.

The decision comes after months of discussions between Cricket Australia and Australia's state cricket ***** ociations over the future of the domestic T20 competition.

At a press conference at the SCG on Tuesday afternoon, CA confirmed that the Renegades will be the first BBL franchise to enter the private ownership process. Other BBL and WBBL teams could also be offered for sale in the future under a "self-determination" model.

The governing body said the move is aimed at bringing private investment into the T20 competition and strengthening the financial position of Australian cricket as players and teams are increasingly being drawn towards lucrative leagues around the world.

"CA will invite bids from private owners for the Renegades with a view to them playing the 2027-28 season under new ownership," the governing body said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Beginning the sales process for the Renegades allows us to take the first step in a self-determination model for our members and represents a defining moment for the game," said Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird.

"This is a significant decision that has involved an enormous amount of ***** ysis, discussion and collaboration over many months."

CA said other franchises could be put on the market at a later stage.

"Pending the result of that process, CA will consider taking other clubs to market under a self-determination model that gives each state member the ability to ***** s the optimal pathway for its own club and community."

According to cricket.com.au, Hobart Hurricanes, Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars are among the other clubs believed to be interested in private investment.

The Renegades are owned by Cricket Victoria, which supported CA's original plan. They won the BBL ***** le in the 2018-19 season.

The move comes as CA looks to strengthen its finances. Despite a boost in revenue from hosting a five-Test series against India, the game's biggest financial market, CA reported a net deficit of A$11.3 million for the 2024-25 financial year.

"By opening the door to private investment in the Big Bash Leagues, Cricket Australia is taking a deliberate step to strengthen and secure the long-term future of the game," CA Chairman Mike Baird said in Tuesday's statement.

Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced in July that December's BBL 2026-27 season opener between the Renegades and Perth Scorchers would take place in the Chennai.

While CA is allowing private ownership, it will continue to control key areas of the competition. Baird said the governing body will retain control over international scheduling, player availability, salary caps and media rights.

CA will also have the power to approve or veto investors and set a reserve price for

The San Francisco 49ers are adding reinforcements on their defensive line before their preseason finale vs. the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, the 49ers and edge rusher Jah Joyner agreed to a deal that will bring Joyner to the Bay Area for the final few days of the 49ers' preseason. Joyner tried out for the 49ers on Wednesday. There's no word yet on a corresponding move which the 49ers will have to make to keep their roster at the 90-player limit.
San Francisco is thin at defensive end with Nick Bosa sidelined by knee tendinitis and rookie Romello Height working through an ankle issue. If the 49ers are going to rest players that figure to be key contributors on their 90-man roster, they may be even thinner Thursday night when they take on the Las Vegas Raiders. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if both Keion White and Sam Okuayinonu were among the players not suiting up for the 49ers.
This marks the second defensive end the 49ers have added in the final week of the preseason. They also signed former Dallas Cowboys fourth-round pick Viliami Fehoko. Joyner will get Thursday's game, and then as many as three practices to make his case to stick around as a practice squad candidate.
Joyner is with the UFL's Houston Gamblers after being released by the Dallas Renegades in March. His only NFL experience came last offseason with the Las Vegas Raiders where he landed as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 draft. He was let go at final cuts and never signed to another NFL club.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — It's been slim pickings this year for Yankees position player prospects for the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades and they lost three of their best ones this month, all infielders.
First, Kaeden Kent went to the Giants in a trade on Aug. 3 then two players were promoted to the Double-A Somerset Patriots, Roderick Arias on Aug. 4 and Core Jackson on Aug. 11.
That left Hudson Valley with two Yankees position player prospects ranked among their top 30 by MLB Pipeline — and one of them, Wilson Rodriguez, is done for the year with a thumb injury.
The over/under for Wednesday's AL East clash between the Yankees and the Orioles is set at 9 total runs on BetMGM. Our comprehensive BetMGM Sportsbook review provides an in-depth guide on how to use their app.
The Renegades do have Eric Genther, a left-handed hitter who switched from left field to catcher this year. Opponents are running like crazy on him, but his coaching staff is seeing steady progress.

Former England Test captain Ben Stokes could become the highest-paid player in Big Bash League (BBL) history after retiring from international cricket after series defeat against New Zeland. According to reports from Code Sports, the all-rounder is attracting significant interest from multiple BBL franchises, with the Sydney Sixers leading the race for his signature ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket in June 2026, bringing the curtain down on a glittering England career. However, the 35-year-old has made it clear that he has no plans to step away from the game entirely and intends to continue playing domestic and franchise cricket around the world.
Unlike several former international captains who moved directly into coaching or broadcasting, Stokes wants to remain an active cricketer. The England great recently returned to action for Durham and is expected to play a larger role in the County Championship, hoping to help his home county achieve sustained success.

Now, as per Code Sports, Ben Stokes has shown interest for BBL and a bidding war has reportedly broken out among BBL franchises, with the Sydney Sixers emerging as the frontrunners to secure Stokes' services. The Sixers' advantage stems from the appointment of former England white-ball coach Matthew Mott, who shares a successful history with Stokes. The pair famously guided England to the 2022 T20 World Cup ******* le in Australia, with Stokes scoring an unbeaten 52 in the final against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Stokes is also no stranger to the Big Bash, having represented the Melbourne Renegades during the 2014/15 season. However, several other franchises are also monitoring the situation closely. The Hobart Hurricanes are among the teams interested, with Cricket Tasmania previously expressing its desire to bring the England star to Tasmania.
Reports suggest Cricket Australia is optimistic about securing Stokes for at least part of the upcoming BBL season. The proposed marquee deal is believed to be worth around AUD 600,000, which could make Stokes the most expensive overseas signing in BBL history.

One challenge remains scheduling. Stokes may prefer to spend Christmas with his family in England before potentially joining another franchise competition. The South Africa-based SA20 begins in January, creating a possible scheduling conflict for the all-rounder.
132854778
n immediate IPL return, however, appears unlikely. Under current BCCI regulations, Stokes cannot enter the IPL auction until 2028 after opting out of the 2025 mega auction. Players who skip the mega auction are ineligible for the subsequent mini auctions under the existing rules. He is also unavailable for the current edition of The Hundred, having not registered for the player draft.

The opening match of next season's Big Bash League will take place in India on 12 December.
The game between Melbourne Renegades and defending champions Perth Scorchers in Chennai will make Australia's Twenty20 competition the first foreign franchise league to play in India.
"I am excited to expand co-operation with India on sport, which not only brings joy to Australians but boosts trade, tourism and investment," Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on the final day of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Australia.
Australian players are in high demand in the Indian Premier League and organisers of the BBL, which started in 2011–12, are looking to tap into cricket's most lucrative market.
Cricket Australia reported a net deficit of A$11.3m (£5.8m) for 2024-25 despite hosting the lucrative Border-Gavaskar Test series against India.

The Dallas Cowboys have been linked with Denzel Mims since he was available during the 2020 NFL draft. Through his failed attempts to establish himself within the league, a Texas reunion has been hoped for by many. In for pre-draft visits, the Cowboys were stunned away from selecting him when CeeDee Lamb fell in their laps with the No. 17 overall selection. Later, after he was unable to find strong footing with the New York Jets, the Cowboys have been linked to him in trade attempts and free-agency inquiries, with nothing coming to fruition until 2026.
Now a member of their offseason roster, Mims' career has gone nothing like planned. He hasn't been on an active NFL roster since 2022, spending two seasons in the UFL with the St. Louis Battlehawks and the Dallas Renegades. Neither stint has been impressive. Now, the Cowboys are giving the local product a chance to prove it's circumstance and opportunity, not a lack of pro talent.
