Michael Burry's short targets Applied Materials after shares fell 26% from their peak, now trading at a steep 53x trailing price-to-earnings multiple.
China shifting to domestic toolmakers and potentially pulled-forward memory CapEx pose the two biggest risks to Applied Materials' future order pipeline.
Micron delivers cleaner, lower-valuation exposure to the memory boom than owning the equipment supplier one step removed from actual chip production.
Act now: the ***** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and Applied Materials didn't make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.
There's no mystery why Dr. Michael Burry is so bearish on the semi trade. It's overheated, and if you think AI is in a bubble, it just makes sense to bet against the broad basket. With an individual bearish position in Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT), though, questions linger as to whether there's more pain to be had in the individual name targeted by the great Michael Burry.

Hyliion Holdings (HYLN) develops modular power generation systems designed to run on a variety of fuel sources. After spending years under the radar, Hyliion has been attracting fresh investor attention in 2026 as its commercial strategy begins to gain traction. The company has been making headlines for advancing deployments of its KARNO generators, a technology built to deliver reliable, low-emission power across multiple fuel types.
That growing momentum received a major boost this week after Hyliion landed a $41.7 million contract from the United States Office of Naval Research to design, develop, build, test, and deliver 2-megawatt and 3-megawatt KARNO power generation systems. Beyond the immediate revenue opportunity, the award serves as a meaningful endorsement of the company's technology by a key U.S. government agency, potentially opening the door to additional defense and commercial opportunities.

Macerich Company (MAC), a retail REIT, is demonstrating strong technical momentum.
Shares are up nearly 50% over the past year.
A 2.59% dividend yield also sweetens things for potential Macerich investors.
Analyst sentiment is mixed with price targets ranging from $19 to $31.
Author's note: In times of financial uncertainty, real estate starts to look like an attractive edge. This last week, all three of my favorite real estate ETFs – Vanguard Real Estate ETF (VNQ), Cohen & Steers Real Estate ETF (ICF), and the S&P 500 Real Estate SPDR (XLRE) – all showed gains.

Well, this one was a dud. Coming off a series sweep of the Cleveland Guardians, the Tampa Bay Rays' offense remained quiet at the plate and dropped the opener to the Texas Rangers by a score of 4-1.
Griffin Jax got the start for the Rays and was serviceable, allowing just a pair of runs over 5.2 innings of work. He punched out ten, walked three, and allowed five hits. Only one of the two runs he allowed was earned. The effort should have been enough to earn his seventh win of the season. Instead, he left with his eighth loss of the year.
The real story of the night was the Rays offense, or lack thereof. Outside of Aranda and Caminero, who each tallied a pair of hits, the rest of the lineup mustered just one hit. Cal Quantrill held the Rays to just one run an two hits over 5.1 innings of work. He punched out seven and walked just one.
Trailing 2-0, the Rays did threaten in the bottom of the fourth and for a brief moment it looked as if they were poised to take the lead and potentially send Cal Quantrill to the showers early. After a leadoff strikeout by Yandy Diaz, who's struggles at the plate continued Tuesday night, Jonathan Aranda singled and later advance to third on a double by Caminero. Mullins then reached on catcher's interference to load the bases for Chandler Simpson. Then, shockingly, Simpson found a way to hit into a groundball double play as he slapped a groundball right back to Quantrill who quickly threw home to start a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

The EMA GARP Fund, managed by Equity Management ******* ociates, recently released its second-quarter investor letter for 2026. The letter can be downloaded here. The letter emphasizes that capital expenditures in artificial intelligence (AI) are driving growth and earnings, despite extreme valuations in the U.S. market, which resemble a bubble-like situation. It also discusses the impact of passive ETF flows, fiscal deficits, and inflationary policies. For the quarter, the Fund's value decreased by 20.00%, and it is down 21.96% for the first half of the year, even though AI and related growth stocks were prominent during Q2. Additionally, the firm identified precious metals miners as a potentially strong investment, noting that they are significantly undervalued and present substantial asymmetrical opportunities. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, EMA GARP Fund highlighted Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:ASM). Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:ASM) is a Canadian precious metal mining company that engages in the acquisition, exploration, and advancement of mineral properties. On July 24, 2026, Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:ASM) closed at $5.63 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $986.77 million. Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:ASM) posted a one-month return of -10.21%, while its shares gained 69.07% over the past 52 weeks.
EMA GARP Fund stated the following regarding Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:ASM) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"The miners are way, way too cheap at present gold and silver prices. And their earnings outlook is robust at higher bullion prices given the substantial operating leverage. Miner industry profitability is as good as it's been at any point in the last 25 years. Two Miner Case Studies are outlined – Aris and Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (NYSEAMERICAN:ASM). Crazy cheap and massive asymmetry.
Avino Silver and Gold is a mid-tier producer of mostly silver with some gold and copper credits. They operate two mines which share one mill in Mexico's Durango Province, a generally safe area free of cartel activity. In calendar 2025, they produced 2.6 million silver equivalent ounces at an average cost (AISC) of $23.75/ounce. With an average silver selling price of $44.70 per ounce during the year their average margin was $20.95/ounce. So, at the mine operating level they had contribution of $54 million. After SG&A, EBITDA for 2025 was $28.5 million. However silver prices today ($60/ounce) are substantially above last year's average price and in Q1 of 2026 they had EBITDA of $20 million. Bloomberg ******* yst's consensus for 2026 EBITDA is $80 million. So, the Company is trading at 12.5x EBITDA…." (Click here to read the full text)

Shares of neocloud infrastructure provider Nebius Group (NASDAQ: NBIS) shot up nearly 19% on July 21 after it emerged that Nvidia has a significant stake in the company.
According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Nvidia has a 9.3% equity stake in Nebius, which amounts to just over $5 billion as of this writing. It is worth noting that Nvidia announced a $2 billion investment in Nebius in March this year to help the neocloud specialist deploy more than 5 gigawatts (GW) of artificial intelligence (AI) data center capacity by the end of the decade.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
That investment has grown substantially. The AI stock has jumped over 67% since Nvidia announced it was backing Nebius on March 11. The good news is that Nebius still has significant upside potential, given the fast-growing AI data center market it serves. Let's see why this Nvidia-backed AI infrastructure specialist is destined to be a long-term winner.
Nebius provides dedicated AI data centers to customers looking to run AI workloads in the cloud. More importantly, the company operates an end-to-end AI cloud infrastructure platform by offering software solutions as well, enabling customers to build AI agents, fine-tune models, and develop applications, among other things.

Our ***** ysts just identified a stock with the potential to be the next Nvidia. Tell us how you invest and we'll show you why it's our #1 pick. Tap here.
Boring wins again. Italgas, the pipe company ***** ody talks about at parties, just posted a record 81% margin and 25% EBITDA growth by doing something shockingly simple: buying a rival and actually integrating it well.
Italgas, Europe's largest gas distributor, posted first-half adjusted EBITDA of €1.07 billion, up 25% year over year. Total adjusted revenue climbed to €1.32 billion, up 17.5%, and adjusted net profit rose 27.3% to €398.6 million. CEO Paolo Gallo called the margin the highest in company history.
The engine behind all of it is last year's acquisition of 2i Rete Gas. Italgas has already banked roughly 42% of its 2032 synergy target, capturing about €130 million in savings in just six months, against €35 million for all of 2025 combined. Total operating costs fell 6.4% even after absorbing the new company's cost base, and dropped more than 20% on a like-for-like basis. Full-year guidance and the long-range strategic plan both stayed intact.
There's no oil-price guessing game here, no battery race, no app anyone needs to fall in love with. Italgas owns pipes under regulated contracts and gets paid to keep them running. The 2i Rete Gas numbers prove something specific: this deal wasn't just about scale, it was about actually finding the overlap in networks, contracts, IT systems, and procurement, and squeezing real money out of it, faster than the integration playbook usually allows.

The Vita Vea sweepstakes could be heating up. With reports that the disgruntled Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle requested a trade and would prefer a team based in California, rumors are swirling about a potential San Francisco 49ers connection. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler added more fuel to that fire when he listed the 49ers among five potential trade fits for Vea.
San Francisco's pass-rush numbers make the interest easy to understand, as well as the team's salary cap situation. The 49ers had a league-low 20 sacks in 2025, and Vea has 11.5 sacks over the past two seasons. For his career, Vea has piled up 35 sacks, 34 tackles and seven tackles for loss last season alone, along with 13 quarterback hits, numbers that have made him a two-time Pro Bowler over his eight seasons in Tampa.
One wrinkle worth noting: the 49ers don't run a base 3-4 front like several of Vea's other reported fits, so his usage in Raheem Morris's scheme could look different than in Tampa Bay's system.
The 49ers are sitting on roughly $71 million in cap ****** e, and for the first time in a while, they aren't staring down a looming extension for a homegrown star, giving them room to be aggressive if they wanted to bid.
There's also a geographic pull. Vea grew up in the Stanford, California, area and played at Milpitas High School just miles from Levi's Stadium. Additionally, it would reunite Vea with ex-Buccaneers star Mike Evans. They played eight years together from 2018 to 2025.

WS Amati Global Innovation Fund, managed by a UK-based equity management firm from AMAti Global Investors, released its second quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter is available to download here. Financial market performance in the second quarter was dominated by geopolitical conflict and enthusiasm for AI. Significant investments across all elements of AI resulted in exceptional growth for related companies, ranging from chip producers to companies constructing data centres. The fund outperformed the MSCI ACWI benchmark due to its diversified exposure beyond headline AI firms, with semiconductor and equipment suppliers being major contributors. At the same time, software and IT services faced investor skepticism due to fears of automation despite long-term potential. The firm is confident in the innovation frontiers to capture long-term growth opportunities in automation, semiconductors, and advanced technologies. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, WS Amati Global Innovation Fund highlighted MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) as a notable contributor. MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) is a leading technology company that offers advanced foundational technology solutions to semiconductor manufacturing, electronics and packaging, and specialty industrial applications. On July 24, 2026, MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) closed at $329.18 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $22.23 billion. MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) posted a one-month return of -20.87%, while its shares gained 221.68% over the past 52 weeks.
WS Amati Global Innovation Fund stated the following regarding MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"The broadening of interest away from the highly concentrated AI headline companies, such as Nvidia, proved to be a helpful environment for the Fund, providing a period of material outperformance against the MSCI ACWI benchmark. Our four top contributors were all caught up in the excitement to some extent, with three being semiconductor producers and one being an equipment supplier into that industry. The latter,MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI), provided the biggest single boost to the Fund's returns and is a notable beneficiary of innovation in the design of modern chips. Rather than single layers of tiny transistors, many modern chips have multiple layers like a wafer biscuit, and electrons need to travel up and down through these layers. MKS' products help to make this possible. AI's insatiable appetite for memory, particularly High Band Memory (HBM), has created a wave of greater demand for the chips which MKS helps to create."

One training camp battle for the Los Angeles Rams that is under the radar is at center.
Could Beaux Limmer potentially unseat Coleman Shelton in the starting lineup?
Rookies rarely crack the rotation under Sean McVay. Limmer started 17 games in his first year including two playoff contests. He did not make a single start during his sophomore campaign.
That's because the Rams watched the 2024 season end at the hands of Limmer in a missed blocking ***** ignment that allowed Jalen Carter to wreck a red zone possession in the NFC divisional round. LA responded by signing Coleman Shelton in free agency. Shelton may not be a Pro Bowl caliber player in terms of performance; however, he excels in the key area that Limmer lacked: communication.

Atlanta Hawks eye blockbuster move for rising Nuggets star Peyton Watson originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Atlanta Hawks are reportedly among several teams keeping a close eye on Denver Nuggets forward Peyton Watson as his restricted free agency continues to unfold.
According to league sources who spoke with The Athletic, the Nuggets have offered the 23-year-old forward a five-year, $70 million contract to remain in Denver. The deal has not yet been finalized, but it signals the franchise's desire to retain one of its most promising young players.
Watson has emerged as an intriguing two-way talent during his time with the Nuggets, earning praise for his defensive versatility, athleticism, and ability to impact games without needing the ball in his hands. At just 23 years old, he is viewed as a player whose best basketball is still ahead of him.
Despite Denver's offer, several teams are exploring potential sign-and-trade scenarios if negotiations take a different direction. League sources indicate that the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Clippers have all expressed interest in acquiring Watson should he become available.

The NBA is in expansion mode.
As well as the would-be franchises in Vegas and Seattle reportedly attracting bids of up to $10bn, commissioner Adam Silver wants the NBA to expand its horizons into Europe.
Across the Atlantic, NBA Europe franchises – and there are going to be at least 12 of them – are fetching bids of at least $500m, potentially up to and beyond $1bn.
There are kinks to iron out there, but Silver sees NBA Europe as his legacy project. One way or another, it is going to happen.
With a 2027 launch date targeted for NBA Europe, the Vegas franchise likely to launch in the 2028-29 season and Seattle soon after, it could be a very lucrative few years for the league.

Arsenal have an incredibly bold plan. It's one that should send a £100m winger to Liverpool.
Liverpool desperately need a new winger after Mohamed Salah's exit. They needed one anyway, given no one replaced Luis Diaz - though, the hope is that Victor Munoz will now do that.
But replacing Salah is another matter entirely. He was the main attacking output in the team, both for goals and ***** ists. Yes, he had a down year last term but his numbers remained higher than just about every potential replacement.
It's why Liverpool are trying to shop in the elite bracket right now. That started with a move for Yan Diomande but despite initially believing it was on, the player rejected them for Paris Saint-Germain (and subsequently rejected them for Real Madrid).
Now the main target is Bradley Barcola, a player Anfield Watch initially reported was a target back in April. He was viewed as a 'market opportunity' back then - though, it's now debatable how correct that was.

FIFA said Tuesday it plans to sell a stake in the business operations of the World Cup and its other competitions through the creation of a semi-private subsidiary.
World football's governing body said it would retain a majority share in FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) but hoped to raise $4.2 billion later this year by "carefully selecting long-term investors who will purchase minority, non-controlling interests".
FIFA's statement was a rapid response to a story in British newspapers The Times and The Financial Times based on leaks of the plan from two sources.
The Times reported that FIFA president Gianni Infantino, 56, stood to profit from the scheme by becoming commissioner of the FFE after his expected next term expires in 2031. FIFA denied that this had been discussed.
The article also said discussion had started with financial advisors and potential investors.

The Las Vegas Raiders have made one of the biggest decisions of training camp, and for now, they're putting their trust in NFL experience over potential.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, first-year head coach Klint Kubiak has named veteran Kirk Cousins as the team's starting quarterback ahead of their opening practice at training camp. While the decision isn't necessarily permanent, it signals that the Raiders believe Cousins gives them the best opportunity to win right now, even with one of the league's most highly anticipated rookies waiting in the wings.

What does the Boston Celtics decision to extend reserve forward Jordan Walsh signal about their plans for the future? The Celtics elected to pick up the $2.4 million unguaranteed season left on the Arkansas alum's rookie contact for their looming 2026-27 campaign – and then extended for three more seasons on a potentially team-friendly deal.
The $15 million extension will pay Walsh $4.6 million for the 2027-28 NBA season, $5 million flat for 2028-29, and $5.3 million in the final year of the extension for the 2029-30 Celtics campaign. But this deal could hint at the Dallas, Texas native finishing this contract with a new ball club, and the folks behind the "Boston Celtics on MassLive" YouTube channel put together a clip to break down why this might be the case.
Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what hosts Brian Robb and Souchi Terada had to say about all of the above.

Many expected the Dodgers to be facing the Mariners in the World Series last season, but Seattle couldn't close the deal against the Blue Jays. Now, a year later, they're an inferior team, but one still fighting to enter the postseason. The M's will go with the veteran Luis Castillo for the opening game of this series; potentially good news for a Dodgers offense that scored more than four runs only once in its last five games, making the pitching do the heavy lifting in the road trip's last stop at Citi Field.
A symbol of stability for this young Mariners staff ever since his acquisition back at the deadline in 2022, Castillo has a 3-9 record this season, which is a direct indicator of career-low numbers almost across the board. Lately, though, Castillo has had problems keeping the ball in the yard, allowing five home runs in his last two outings, the losing pitcher of record in each of his three outings this month. Although that 4.85 ERA this season justifies a lousy record, it is also a byproduct of the Mariners' complete inability to provide him any run support, scoring just 19 runs in his last eight starts.
Back to the home runs and how they might come into play, the one Dodger to actually leave the yard against the Mets, Kyle Tucker, is also one of the two who has gone deep against Castillo before. The two home runs in Citi Field were encouraging, but even in this recent stretch, Tucker needs to show more to come close to the player the Dodgers thought they were getting. Hitting at home hasn't been an enjoyable task for Tucker with a .607 OPS at Dodger Stadium.
One player who has definitely enjoyed performing at Dodger Stadium, though, is Justin Wrobleski. The Dodgers' starter has managed to keep an ERA below 3.00 both at home and on the road, but his .461 OPS allowed in seven starts at home genuinely sounds made up. Monitoring how he does with an increased workload in the second half is a priority for the Dodgers.

I broke down the 2027 scouting classes in my early summer scouting series, and the room has a ton of potential with a long list of potential standout players. I broke down the offense and defense in articles and I suggest reading those for a broad aspect of the room. Brock Bowers remains an elite tight end, and arguably the best in the NFL, but the Raiders do have some questions behind Bowers after the 2026 season. Former 2nd rounder Michael Mayer is sent to be a free agent, and with a good season he should be looking at a decent contract as a TE2, blocking specialist. Additionally, Ian Thomas is set to be a free agent and Las Vegas also has former UDFA Carter Runyon, who's flashed, but it's likely even with retaining Mayer the Raiders should add another TE.
These rankings are extremely early, and they will evolve over not only the summer but the next 8-10 months throughout the season, and into draft season. Some lists will feature 10, 15, 20, or more ranked prospects but I'll include others on the list below to note.
Jamari Johnson, Oregon – 6'5/260, R-So
Johnson was a key focal point of the Ducks offense last year with 32 receptions, 510 yards, and 3 TD after coming over from Louisville. He's better than Kenyon Sadiq, and in my opinion has a chance to be a better prospect than Bowers. Johnson has absurd movement skills, he's shown exceptional length, fires off the ball, and Johnson also shows a ton of quickness and movement in his route running. Johnson has fluid hips, he makes his cuts well, and Johnson shows an innate ability to adjust to the ball in the air and come down with tough catches. Where he makes a ton of impact is as a run blocker, where Johnson uses his length and athleticism with good technique, and a ton of lower body power to get off the line of scrimmage and into ***** e. Johnson will need to continue his play as the starter at TE, instead of the supplementary piece, but he has the core traits, athleticism, and technique to be a top 10 pick.
Peter Clarke, Temple – 6'6/270, Sr

After 14 years with FIFA World Cup-winning player and coach Didier Deschamps at the helm, the French national team is now officially under the stewardship of ex-captain Zinedine Zidane.
An appointment which had been largely expected for months, this marks the 54-year-old's first head coaching role since leaving Real Madrid in 2021, where he won La Liga twice and the UEFA Champions League three times across two stints in charge,
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Zidane, who won the World Cup alongside Deschamps in 1998 and reached the Final in 2006, during which he was sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi, admitted that taking charge of Les Bleus was a lifelong dream come true.

The Houston Texans 2026 season is officially underway.
With players reporting to camp, football has returned, opening a new chapter in the franchise's history with a chance to finally reach the Super Bowl.
This should be one of the league's more complete teams. The Texans return nine starters on defense and upgraded the offensive line. They have veterans stepping up at wide receiver and bolstered the run game with a massive trade in the offseason.
Everything comes down to meeting expectations, primarily with the offensive pieces. C.J. Stroud is geared up for another campaign, but how will he respond knowing there's a contract potentially waiting for him at the season's end? Who else needs to step up and prove their value?
Several names must impress at this training camp. Here's Texans Wire's top 12 players to watch over the next month.

Jalen Carter is no longer being paid for potential. The Philadelphia Eagles are compensating him like the centerpiece of a championship defense.
Carter agreed to a four-year, $152 million extension that reportedly includes $106 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history by annual value. That distinction brings more than financial security. It establishes a standard Carter will be expected to meet every week. The Eagles have already seen stretches in which Carter appears capable of controlling games from the interior. His first-step quickness, power and ability to collapse the pocket create problems that cannot always be measured through sacks. Quarterbacks are forced to move, running backs must alter their paths and offensive lines frequently commit additional help to his side.
Philadelphia's investment is based on the belief that those stretches can become the norm.
Record contracts invite record expectations. Carter will be evaluated against the NFL's elite defensive tackles rather than other young players at his position. Quiet stretches will receive more attention, while availability, conditioning, and discipline will become increasingly important factors in his performance. The extension also gives Carter an opportunity to **** ume a larger leadership role. Jordan Davis has received his own long-term deal, but Carter's contract makes him the financial centerpiece of Philadelphia's defense. Younger linemen will follow his example, and the organization will expect his preparation to match his talent.
None of that should be viewed as unfair. Carter earned the leverage that produced a historic agreement. The Eagles responded by making one of the largest commitments in franchise history.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup proved to be a controversial one. The United States joined Canada and Mexico as a host nation for the event, but it was the only country that saw its President, Donald Trump, involve himself in the goings-on on the pitch.
By his own admission, Trump stepped in to help get USMNT star Folarin Balogun's suspension postponed after the electrifying goal scorer was **** sed a red card, resulting in him being deemed eligible for the U.S.'s round of 16 match against Belgium. Many people pointed toward Trump's connection to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who lobbied for Trump to receive the **** el Peace Prize and gave him the newly established FIFA Peace Prize, as a reason why Balogun's suspension was overturned.
Now, The Times' Martyn Ziegler is reporting on a **** ing "scheme" involving Infantino and people with close ties to the Trump administration.
"EXCLUSIVE: Fifa's president Gianni Infantino is planning to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors under a scheme that could potentially earn him tens of millions of pounds. Investor discussions held with figures close to the Trump administration, say sources," Ziegler reported.
"FIFA has now confirmed to The Times this Infantino plan is under discussion with Josh Kushner as proposed lead investor."

The Red Sox made an initial strike on the trade market this weekend when they made the 1-for-1 deal that sent lefty starter Connelly Early to the Nationals for breakout star Curtis Mead. It appears they aren't done, either. Here's what we're hearing on Boston's plans ahead of the trade deadline, which is Monday (August 3) at 6 p.m. ET.
º The Red Sox are keeping an open mind ahead of Monday, but according to major league officials, they're targeting three main needs. First, the club — like every contender this time of year — is interested in adding pitching depth, not just at the back end of the rotation but also in the bullpen. Secondly, catching upgrades remain on the table. Lastly — and perhaps most surprisingly — the club is in the shortstop market.
The addition of Mead at second base hasn't stopped Breslow from continuing to look for an infield bat and one rival evaluator said the belief is that the Red Sox are looking for a "long-term" option at shortstop. The market is rich with big-name candidates who may or may not move, including the Angels' Zach Neto, Houston's Jeremy Peña, the Mets' Francisco Lindor and Washington's C.J. Abrams. Considering the potential pending lockout — and a very poor position player class in free agency this winter — Boston may be looking at this deadline as an opportunity to settle that position.
That search comes with its complications. Landing a shortstop would signal the Red Sox waving the white flag on Trevor Story, whose Red Sox tenure has been defined by injuries but also a massive amount of respect for the leadership he brings. Adding Mead and a shortstop makes the pathway to regular at-bats much less clear for Marcelo Mayer moving forward. And perhaps most strikingly, it further clogs the pipes ahead of the arrival of top prospect Franklin Arias, who was just promoted to Triple-A.
"Not sure why (they're in that market) with Arias coming," said one rival scout.
