My son recently sent me this tweet from someone named Trey Rowland: "ordered the number 5 at Jimmy John's and now I have a voicemail from Jayden Daniels' lawyer." I responded that I didn't get the joke. He then told me that Daniels's lawyer, Adam Kenner, had sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU, demanding that the school not ******* ign the number 5 (the number Daniels wore while winning the Heisman in his final season at LSU) to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett. I was intrigued, and decided to investigate.
With all due respect to Kenner, this is a legal fumble of epic proportions (I abide by the longstanding rule that requires me to use puns whenever I write about sports).
I got a copy of the letter, and it has more holes than the Bengals' offensive line (see above). Interestingly, the letter does not actually mention the number. It purports to address LSU's use of Daniels' "name, image and likeness," or "NIL." It may be that LSU is using Daniels' name or image in some fashion, but all the reporting I've seen indicates it is a direct response to the ******* ignment of Daniels' old number.
More: USA TODAY Network 2025 Ohio Super 25 football preseason poll
Even though a lawyer wrote the letter, it gets to the point quickly. It states in the second paragraph "[w]e have been informed that LSU...continues to use Mr. Daniels' NIL notwithstanding the expiration of the contractual period during which LSU was authorized to do so." So we can presume that Daniels' theory is that the number 5 is part of Daniels' NIL.

American AI companies are collectively worth trillions of dollars, and lawmakers, ***** el-winning economists, and AI executives themselves are asking whether ordinary citizens should own a piece of them.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has been discussing a plan to give the U.S. government a 5% equity stake in his company, according to a Financial Times report from early July. Altman wants other leading AI firms to do the same, with equity flowing into a government-run fund modeled on Alaska's Permanent Fund, which invests oil wealth and distributes annual payments to residents. The talks are in early stages, and any deal would likely require an act of Congress.
The proposal comes as public opinion on AI has turned sharply negative. More than 200 economists, including 16 ***** el laureates, have warned that AI could put millions of workers out of jobs within years, not the decades that previous waves of automation required. A fund could cushion blow, if it's structured properly.
Altman first raised the idea with the Trump administration in 2025, according to CNBC, and spent the next year building his case. OpenAI published a formal proposal in April calling for a "Public Wealth Fund" that would give every citizen, including the tens of millions of Americans who don't own a single share of stock, a stake in AI-driven growth.
Each American's share of the proposed stake would be worth between $125 and $146, depending on whether OpenAI goes public at its target valuation of $1 trillion or stays at its current $852 billion. That's a fraction of what Alaska's Permanent Fund typically pays to the state's more than 600,000 residents. Even in a down year, its payouts are robust: the Permanent Fund delivered $1,000 per resident in 2025, its lowest payout in five years. Because the fund is worth more than $91 billion, having been built over five decades on continuous oil revenue and diversified investments, its dividends are consistent and high enough to mean something to each person.

The Arizona Cardinals have a number of position and roster battles still going on in the preseason. At one position, there are two battles. One is for a starting job and the other is for what likely is the last spot on the roster at the position.
That battle is at inside linebacker.
Mack Wilson's role as the starting "Mike" linebacker, relaying defensive play calls to the rest of the team, is set. He returns to that role after missing the final nine games of the season with a rib injury.
At the other spot, veteran Jack Gibbens and second-year linebacker Cody Simon battle, but there might not end up being a winner.
Head coach Mike LaFleur said on Tuesday that whoever starts might be a week-by-week affair.

OG Anunoby is focused on helping the Knicks repeat as champions in the 2026-27 season originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
As one of the most important players in the New York Knicks' championship run, OG Anunoby is a cemented legend in the Big Apple. His game-winning tip-in in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals will be one of the most legendary moments in franchise history.
He is a two-time champion, as he was part of the Toronto Raptors' **** le-winning team back in 2019. Anunoby seems ready to defend the **** le with his Knicks teammates. It will be quite challenging, but it seems everyone on the Knicks is locked in on that goal.
Playing for the Knicks is a tough job because of the pressure of being on one of the league's biggest teams. Anunoby had no problems living up to those expectations as a crucial player for the Knicks, and he did that for years playing for the Raptors.
This time around, Anunoby actually got to play a role in the championship run, as he was injured during the 2019 Playoffs when the Raptors won it. Anunoby proved that he is one of the league's premier wings, as he played elite defense and he was always there when the Knicks needed him on offense.

A roundup of Manatee and Sarasota County high school sports for the week of August 17-21, 2026.
Bradenton Christian 3, Cardinal Mooney 1: Bradenton Christian's practice was so rough on Monday that head coach Zach VanDuinen had to stop it midway through. The Panthers' warm-up before facing Cardinal Mooney on Tuesday wasn't any better. But that offered no indication of how their first game of the season would go.
After dropping the first set, Bradenton Christian rebounded, winning the next three to defeat Cardinal Mooney at home 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 28-26). Junior Addelyn VanDuinen led the charge, recording over 15 kills and at least three aces. Junior Grace Hullinger also had over 15 kills.
Bradenton Christian's defense kept the Panthers in the game behind timely kills from junior Kendal Kleppinger and senior Kelsey Jerome.
"We have to execute," Zach VanDuinen said. "We have to pass well. We got to play good defense. And if we can do that, we give ourselves a chance. And tonight, we were able to serve just aggressive enough to keep them out of system, which for us was our game plan."

The St. Michael's Horsemen are putting two streaks on the line in the 2026 prep football season.
The first is their run of three consecutive Class 3A state championships.
The second is a winning streak of 33 games that dates back almost three years, to early October of 2023 and a 7-6 loss to West Las Vegas.
"Our thinking is that we're not putting a lot of weight on the (winning) streak," Horsemen coach Joey Fernandez said. "We're putting weight on week to week. Our No. 1 goal is to get to the state championship game and get a blue trophy."
St. Mike's can win its 34th straight game this week, as it takes on Capital.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the ninth after pinch-hitter Tyler Tolbert hit a tying two-run single, giving the Kansas City Royals a 4-3 victory over the Athletics on Tuesday night.
Trailing 3-1, the Royals loaded the bases with one out in the ninth on a catcher's interference call, a single and a walk. Tolbert batted for Kyle Isbel and grounded a single into left off Hogan Harris (3-2) to tie it. Elvis Alvarado replaced Harris and got Isaac Collins to line out before Witt blooped a single into left for the Royals' sixth walk-off win of the season.
The Athletics took an early lead as Zack Gelof drew a first-inning walk, and Jonah Heim drew another to load the bases. Then, Tommy White knocked in the game's first run with a single to left. A second runner nearly scored, but was thrown out at the plate.
Athletics left-hander Brady Basso exited the game after just one out in the third inning. He gave up two hits and recorded one strikeout in his short, 32-pitch outing.
Jack Perkins inherited one baserunner when he took over, but caught Carter Jensen stealing second. The Royals flew out to end the inning. Perkins also worked around a leadoff walk in the fourth. Perkins held Kansas City to one hit and struck out four in 3 2/3 innings.

Key changes to the portfolio will include lower concentration and increased investments with near-term catalysts, alongside a proactive stance on profit-taking. Despite declines in market multiples, underlying businesses continue to grow, suggesting a favorable positioning for returns. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Greenhaven Road Capital highlighted PAR Technology Corporation (NYSE:PAR). "We still own PAR Technology Corporation (NYSE:PAR) and KKR, but they are not currently top-five holdings, so we will devote more ******* e to the new investments. My view on PAR remains that there is a long runway for growth and that the company has inflected to EBITDA profitability. If our view is variant, it is in two places: ******* ysts are significantly underestimating 2027 EBITDA and underestimating PAR's chances of winning McDonald's."

The Mets didn't have enough offense to keep up on Tuesday night, falling to the San Diego Padres, 5-2.
New York's four-game winning streak came to an end with the loss.
-- It didn't take long for New York to go down 1-0 as Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a no-doubt, first-pitch home run off rookie Zac Thornton. Tatis then showed his defensive skills in the second inning, robbing Francisco Lindor of a grand slam for the third out.
The star's big night continued in the top of the fifth inning, blasting a two-run homer off Thornton to make it a 3-0 game.
-- Besides the two home runs, Thornton had a solid outing over 5.0 IP and a career-high 99 pitches (69 strikes). Interim manager Andy Green kept Thornton in the game after the second homer and he powered through to strike out three straight Padres. Overall, Thornton struck out seven and allowed the three runs on six hits and a walk.

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – Throughout Annika Sorenstam's short career as a senior player, her son Will McGee has been at the forefront. Quick to give advice and a hug, Will has even taken center stage from time to time at the PNC Championship, where the outgoing teen teams up annually with his famous mom.
But on Tuesday at the U.S. Senior Women's Open, 55-year-old Sorenstam's mind was on her eldest child, daughter Ava, playing in her first high school golf match back home in central Florida for Lake Highland Prep.
"I want to make sure she survives nine holes," Sorenstam said with a smile at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Sorenstam, a 72-time winner on the LPGA, is one of five past champions in the field this week at the Donald Ross design.
Toward the end of her junior year, 16-year-old Ava, a softball player, announced to the family that she wanted to try out for the golf team in her last year of high school. Ava likes to play more than practice, so if Sorenstam wanted to hang out with her daughter, she had to leave the range.
It's a new strategy for the 10-time LPGA major winner, who smoked the field by eight when she made her U.S. Senior Women's Open debut five years ago. Will was 10 back then, and already a golf nut who was well-versed in his mother's resume.

Hayden Panettiere's death this week, just five days before her 37th birthday, marks the latest tragic end for a child star. In recent months, Panettiere had become more transparent about the trauma, including **** ual exploitation, she endured as a young actress. The timing of her death is tragic both in light of her age and how recently she appeared to have been winning her fight against addiction. Her efforts to reclaim her autonomy should be acknowledged for what she overcame — and for what fame does to child stars.
Panettiere began appearing in commercials at just 11 months old; by age 5, she'd been in 50. Her breakout role came at age 10, playing a coach's spirited daughter in "Remember the **** ans." Her multiseason portrayals of an indestructible cheerleader on the television series "Heroes" and a troubled country music star on ABC's "Nashville" made her a cultural fixture to millennials.
For decades, the autonomy, safety and happiness of child stars were not a priority for insatiable audiences nor the Hollywood industrial complex. If Panettiere's accounts are any guide, they still aren't.
Off set, however, Panettiere struggled at basically every turn: with an onerous mother, from whom Panettiere was estranged for much of her adult life; drug addiction; alcoholism; depression; and multiple rehab stints. She had relationships with men 10 or more years older than her. She was plied with pills at 15, she revealed this year. Her child custody battle was just one of many traumas dissected in tabloid headlines.
This spring, Panettiere published a memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," that is equal parts appalling and utterly sympathy-inducing. Panettiere bared all, describing her "shortcomings as a mother," her refusal to "blame" anyone else and her grief "for all the hours lost to addiction." The media campaign for the book pulled no punches. Panettiere gave audiences the one thing she refused to further compromise: truth.

While it wasn't a storybook ending, it was still an "incredible summer" for the Tupelo 49ers.
For just the third time ever, Tupelo reached the American Legion World Series. They rolled into Shelby, North Carolina, on a hot streak and kept it going in pool play with a 3-0 mark. This had all the signs of a team that could win it all after coming up short in 2011 and 2021.
That dream ended Monday, when Portland (Ore.) beat the 49ers 3-1 in the semifinals. It was just Tupelo's second loss in its last 22 games.
"it was an incredible summer," fourth-year head coach Russell Bunch said. "These guys have really grown together, and it's been a real good experience for everybody. I'm just really proud for them. I hate it shook out like it did and we weren't able to win the whole thing."
There were a lot of memorable moments along the way, though. After winning the state tournament, the Niners left town Aug. 5 and stayed gone for nearly two weeks. They rolled through the Mid-South Regional, putting on one offensive show after another and batting .398 over five games. Regional MVP Jonas Coleman batted .667 with six RBIs over that span.

The kings of the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed captured a share of an eighth consecutive league ***** le last season. Two entire graduating classes – 2022 and 2025 – with no crossovers between them were both able to make their way through all four years winning league ***** les each year.
Those are lofty expectations for the newest set of incoming freshmen this year.
"Every year we lose some good players from last year," head coach Nick Yordy said. "But some of the guys that we did lose, these younger guys are really taking advantage of an opportunity to step up and get out on the field on a Friday night and go out there and try to win some football games."
That's not to say Badin will be made up of underclassmen as it does have several returning juniors and seniors, but the amount of seniors lost as Yordy indicated does leave many questions for the Rams to answer this year.
It is easy fuel for motivation to prove any doubters wrong, according to senior Emmett Sackenheim.

Barcelona new signing Rodri has said he's ready to return to action after signing for the club from Manchester City.
There have been doubts about the midfielder's fitness as he underwent back surgery after winning World Cup 2026 with Spain, but Rodri says he is recovered and able to get to work with his new side.
"I'm ready to play now. The operation was nothing serious, it was an outpatient procedure," he said at his unveiling.
"I hope to be able to train normally tomorrow. Whatever the manager deems appropriate. I just need to finalize the transfer and get under Hansi's orders as soon as possible."
Barcelona are currently preparing to face Al Ahly on Wednesday in the Joan Gamper Trophy in what is a final friendly before the champions kick off the defence of their La Liga trophy at Elche on Sunday.

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Brooks Nader dropped a new 10-photo carousel on Instagram, where she showed off a sultry Roberto Cavalli ensemble that was a masterclass in Italian vacation fashion.
In the cover snapshot of the photo set, which she playfully captioned, "Sea ya ," the model and Love Thy Nader ran up a luxurious flight of wooden stairs in a silky, cream-colored slip dress by the aforementioned designer. The ready-to-wear piece was simultaneously timeless and on-trend, courtesy of its chic cut and semi-sheer paneling. Nader accessorized the style further with a coordinating pair of strappy sandals and oversized black sunglasses, adding extra sparkle with a glimmering ring, a bejeweled necklace and matching earrings.
The model looked over her shoulder as she moved upstairs, shooting the camera a cheeky smile for a dynamic final shot that looked like something plucked straight out of a 1950s fashion magazine. Her long, caramel-colored tresses were styled in lush, carefree waves that cascaded down the open back of the slinky dress, adding to the laid back, effortless look. Meanwhile, her makeup was a late-summer-friendly natural glam comprising matte skin, rosy cheeks and a beautiful glossy lip.
Other snapshots included in the vacation photo set further highlighted her designer duds, showing the reality TV star enjoying time on the water in Capri with her friends and family. Overall, the sleek ensemble had the pure glamour of a classic Italian film-and we weren't the only ones in love. "Will never get over these photos," model Kylie Vonnahme wrote in the comment section. Meanwhile, one fan also sensed some Old Hollywood energy, asking, "Anyone else getting Marilyn Monroe vibes? These pics are stunning ."
And August has proved to be a standout month in an already exceptional career year for Nader, as she's continued to add accolades to her incredible fashion rsum. For instance, earlier this month, Old Navy revealed that the model would be one of the faces of their fall denim campaign, posing alongside Grammy Award-winning recording artist Cardi B and popular influencer Haley Baylee.

We are firm fans of Mark Guiducci's Vanity Fair. Having succeeded Radhika Jones in 2025, names like Jennifer Aniston, Elle & Dakota Fanning, Charli XCX, Teyana Taylor, Margaret Qualley, Kylie Jenner, Mbappé, and Lisa have become cover stars. Covers have captivated and caught our attention to no end. Next up on the cover of Vanity Fair is Marc Jacobs, who fronts the 2026 Style issue of the magazine. The CFDA Award-winning American designer (whose fashion label is set to be sold by LVMH to WHP Global and G-III Apparel Group in a deal valued at up to $850 million) is painted by the Canadian artist Anna Weyant for the occasion.

"I love art and portraits, but not this for a cover of a style issue," shared MModa upon checking out the cover.
"I've really been enjoying the new Vanity Fair a lot, but this is probably the weakest cover under Mark Guiducci so far. I don't mind it, though – it's definitely not the best, but I don't think it's awful," LastNight voiced.
"Sometimes it's best to just use a nice photo for the front of the issue. Twist yourself into knots trying to do something different, and you end up making Marc Jacobs look a bit like a very serious Ringo Starr," shrieked tigerrouge.

All of New York was celebrating this summer as the party for the New York Knicks winning the ***** le never seemed to stop...
Well, not everyone. Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai was not thrilled, he told NetsDaily.
"Every year, some team is going to win a championship. So it happens that this year that team is in the same city. It doesn't make us feel very good. It irritates our fan base and it is embarrassing but in business or in competition, in sports, or in anything, you shouldn't let the embarrassment factor affect how you perform."
Or, in the case of the Brooklyn Nets, change their rebuilding trajectory.
"[We] had a plan and we're rebuilding and I think right now we are on a positive trajectory. So it doesn't change my thinking at all."

The Chicago Cubs are taking on the Chicago White Sox in the Crosstown Series.
Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong continued to stay hot at the plate on Tuesday night, hitting a lead-off home run for Chicago in the bottom of the first inning. It was not only his 31st home run of the year, but also his second leadoff home run in as many days.
Crow-Armstrong started the home half of the first inning on Monday also with a leadoff home run. He finished the game 4 for 5 with two home runs and four RBI.
His second home run of the night was the game-winner as he launched a 391 ft. walk-off shot to give the Cubs the 7-5 victory. The Chicago outfielder became the first player in 70 years to hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch his team saw and a walk-off home run on the last pitch his team saw in a game.
PCA also made Cubs history by becoming the first player in franchise history to have back-to-back 30-30 seasons.

There were plenty of positive layers to Greater Beckley Christian's golf season in 2025.
It was about perseverance. It was about history. It was about building. It was about winning.
The Crusaders won their first regional championship and played in the state tournament for the first time since 2002, creating memories they'll always carry.
"It had been 23 years since Greater Beckley had done that, so that was awesome for the kids and the community," said head coach Mickey Carr. "It made them feel good about what they'd accomplished."
They did it all with a young team, only two seniors in Eli Gunter and Paul Fox. Gunter was the only senior among the four who played in the state tournament. Yet the young group put it all together.

The first round was competitive, with Paxton showcasing some aggression and power. Perez remained level-headed, focused on the ***** ignment. In Round 2, Perez put Paxton down with a big left hook and finished the fight with a pair of hammerfists.
Perez, 27, redeems himself after a failed DWCS attempt vs. Manoel Sousa in 2025. The fight was a back-and-forth banger, but Perez was finished midway through Round 3. The loss was the only one in his most recent eight appearances.
Paxton, 31, has an eight-fight winning streak snapped.

In the build-up to the return of La Liga action, former Real Madrid winger turned La Liga ambassador and ESPN pundit Steve McManaman spoke at a press conference to address the changes at the Bernabéu this summer and the expectations on Jose Mourinho.
"He needs to win. It's as simple as that. He needs to beat Barcelona. He needs to win the league. I don't necessarily think he needs to win the Champions League, but I certainly think he needs to finish above Barcelona," McManaman said.
"He's been brought in because the last two years have been disappointing. Real Madrid can't go three years without winning anything. And your nearest and dearest rivals are in Barcelona winning everything. So Jose has to hit the ground running and he has to be successful straight away. That's what he's being brought in for."
"When we won all those ****** les with the names you mentioned, we had an incredible number six in Claude Makélélé who really helped the midfield… Real Madrid this year have tried to rectify that. I think they were weak defensively last year. He was the most important player in our team. Forget about Figo, Zidane, Raúl, Ronaldo. Zidane said the most important player was Makélélé."
"To be very honest, I never ever thought he would leave Real Madrid. I really didn't. I know there was a lot of stories in the English newspapers about ****** nal, but if you see Vinícius Júnior at Madrid, I thought most people think he was never going to leave. I don't think he was ever going to go to Saudi Arabia. That didn't make any sense at all for me. So his home is Madrid. I'm glad he signed a new six-year contract… The most important thing is for Vini and for Kylian to play in the same team, but each finds a role where they're very comfortable in, and drive Madrid forward."

At the start of the summer, big-time decisions had to be made. The Oklahoma City Thunder faced several roster dilemmas. This was always going to be a roster-changing offseason. But by the end of their NBA playoff run, most questions had answered themselves.
One being — who should OKC prioritize to keep, Lu Dort or Isaiah Hartenstein? The Thunder didn't need to split hairs on that. The latter proved to go from a luxury to a necessity. Meanwhile, Cason Wallace was ready to take over Dort's starting gig and responsibilities.
The Thunder made their choice. They signed Hartenstein to a three-year, $75 million deal. A fresh contract ensured he'd stay in OKC. All before he even had the chance to test the open market. Meanwhile, Dort's team option was picked up. But with the caveat of him being traded to the Atlanta Hawks a couple of weeks afterward.
Hartenstein recently told German media outlet 'Basket-World News' his reaction to OKC's busy offseason. The Thunder have lost some of their depth to avoid the second apron. But they made sure to keep the seven-footer for next season and beyond. He was too important to their success over the last two years. He talked about Dort's departure after previously being tied with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the longest-tenured Thunder player.
"There's always a human element involved. You probably spend more time with your teammates than with your own family over the course of the season. So you do grow very close," Hartenstein said. "But at the end of the day, we all know it's a business. I think Sam Presti at least put him in a good position. There are a lot of general managers who just send players off to some other team where they have no chance of winning or performing well. So at least I know he's in a good position and can play."

Two weeks ago, USC and Notre Dame announced that the two schools will renew their storied football rivalry beginning in 2030. However, the Trojans and Irish are not set to face off in the regular season for the next four years.
But could they meet before then in the postseason? In his 2026 college football season predictions, Brett Ciancia of Pick Six Previews has USC and Notre Dame playing each other in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The winner of that game would advance to meet Georgia in the quarterfinals.
For starters, any prediction that has the Trojans in the playoff will be music to the ears of USC fans. Beyond that, getting college football's greatest intersectional rivalry in a winner-take-all postseason game would be appointment television for all fans of the sport.
First, however, USC needs to worry about making the playoff. This will not be an easy task, as even without the Irish on the schedule, the Trojans still have to play a difficult Big Ten schedule that includes Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, and Washington.
