IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Van Mathias has made a huge splash in his U.S. senior national team debut this week at the Pan Pacific Championships, the biggest international swim meet of the year for the Americans.
He has won two golds and two silvers in four events heading into the final night of competition Saturday in the outdoor pool some 40 miles from the site of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Quite a stunner from a guy whose day job is director of operations for Indiana University's swimming and diving program. Mathias, who turns 26 later this month, swam five years for the Hoosiers. He then hung up his suit and goggles and went home to Beaverton, Oregon.
He worked various jobs, mostly stayed out of the water, and took up weightlifting with his mother and uncle, both former competitive lifters.
Then he got a call from IU coach Ray Looze, who was looking for an operations director. Mathias got the gig and moved back to Bloomington, where he oversees team travel, recruiting visits and all the little things that keep a Division I program running.

Italy's Sara Curtis set a new world record in the women's 50-meter backstroke Wednesday at the European Aquatics Championships, finishing in 26.63 seconds in the event's semifinals to lower the mark by nearly a quarter of a second.
Australia's Kaylee McKeown owned the previous mark of 26.86, set in Budapest, Hungary, in October 2023. McKeown, the United States' Katharine Berkoff and Curtis have all threatened the record since. Curtis clocked 27.07 seconds in June, tied for the ninth-best time ever for the race.
The 19-year-old Curtis is a six-time European junior champion and won three golds — including in the 50 backstroke — at the European short-course (25-meter pool) championships last year. This was her first major long-course (50-meter pool) gold.
The 50-meter events — all-out sprints over one length of the pool — will have increased attention over the next two years. The short versions of the backstroke, **** erfly and **** troke will all make their Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The 50-meter freestyle has been in the Olympics since 1988.
The European championships are the biggest event of the year for the continent's swimmers. The Pan-Pacific Championships — featuring the U.S., Canada, Australia and more — begin Wednesday night in Irvine, Calif. The next World Aquatics Championships meet is in July 2027.

The 2026 Trade Deadline has officially come and gone, and it's time for the immediate breakdown of the state of the Yankees following it. It's fair to say that most weren't projecting a flashy deadline for New York with a big-name blockbuster or anything of that sort, but it still comes as a surprise that at the end of the day they made only three moves: they traded Camilo Doval away to Pittsburgh, and then added Luis García Jr. alongside Heliot Ramos to bolster their lineup and provide some depth to the outfield while two of their stars are on the shelf.
Let's start with what they did accomplish before we get into what they failed to get. García is a legit A-plus addition offensively, leading the National League in slugging and coming in just behind Ben Rice for third overall across MLB. They also managed to pry him away from Washington for a basket of arms that they likely didn't have plans for this season and possibly even next, sending off their 14th-rated prospect Jack Cebert and their 25th-ranked prospect Ben Grable by MLB Pipeline's scouting, alongside Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird. Cruz impressed in Triple-A this season and got a couple brief stints with the major league team but never seemed to be in the plans for a postseason bullpen, while Bird actively worked his way off the roster two years in a row after getting acquired at the deadline last season. Overall, that's a more than acceptable package to surrender in exchange for a bat that can mash against righties and bring some protection to Rice's spot in the order.

García's defensive fit is a bit more murky, as he's a first baseman when the team already has Rice and Paul Goldschmidt working there. Goldschmidt, for all his early-season success, is still meant to be a backup for this team, and it looks as though he'll cede playing time to García at first while Rice will primarily play as the designated hitter.
What that group looks like once Giancarlo Stanton is back in the fold, who knows, but the Yankees can't plan on Stanton just sliding back in after missing most of the season and needing a bat in the worst way to stay afloat here and now. The Yankees will have García for the 2027 season as well, ****** uming there will be one amidst CBA negotiations and the very real threat of a lengthy lockout.

O'Callaghan has been managing a back injury, according to Swimming Australia.
This past week, O'Callaghan won four golds and one silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, including gold in the 200m freestyle (which she won at the Paris Olympics and the 2025 World Championships).
"I always knew my program was going to be different, and I would reassess at the end of the Games, and my injury is exactly where I thought it would be," O'Callaghan said in a press release. "And the time is right for me to go home. Good luck to all my teammates (at Pan Pacs) in California."

Howard Stern reportedly just earned an early courtroom victory in his legal battle with his former **** istant Leslie Kuhn.
A New York judge has dismissed one of Kuhn's claims against the shock jock and ruled that her allegation that Howard's production company forged a nondisclosure agreement wasn't supported by the evidence.
According to court documents obtained by Page Six, which reported on the ruling Thursday, July 30, Kuhn had claimed that she never signed an NDA from Howard, 72. Instead, she suggested that someone from the radio host's production company, One Twelve, may have accessed her email account and signed it without her knowledge.
However, the judge pointed to an email sent from Kuhn's account that read "Signed NDA attached," along with a copy of the agreement which included her electronic signature. The court called her hacking theory a "bald **** ertion" and dismissed that portion of her case.
The ruling came just days after Howard's attorney, Andrew Mark Goldsmith, blasted Kuhn's attempt to amend her lawsuit with new allegations that a 2022 nondisclosure agreement had been fabricated.

It wasn't a pretty opening to the series, but the Yankees found their way Monday night in Chicago. Max Fried struggled mightily in his second start returning from the IL, putting them in a big hole early with an offense that hasn't been ****** e to exploding lately, but a pair of big innings turned this game from a deficit to a 9-5 win.
Last time out Fried was extremely sharp, going five strong despite a low pitch limit blanking the Pirates with just a single hit and walk going against him. Randal Grichuk greeted him with a leadoff double, and the wheels fell off from there. Munetaka Murakami followed up with a single to put runners on the corners, and after Fried struck out Miguel Vargas for the first out of the inning Colson Montgomery ripped a single to the right side that Jazz Chisholm Jr. barely couldn't corral scoring Grichuk. Chase Meridoth was up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in a second run, and then Braden Montgomery lined a triple over the head of a diving Max Schuemann that brought in a third. It looked like Schuemann might've gotten messed up leaping for the ball, which would've complicated things for a Yankees team that is already down two of their starting outfielders, but thankfully he shook it off and stayed in the game.

Fried calmed down from there, working two straight clean frames, but the Yankee offense wasn't getting anything going at first against the rookie Noah Schultz, who entered the game with a gaudy 6.04 ERA. Paul Goldschmidt managed a two-out single in the top of the first, but the lineup otherwise went down in order the first time through. The fourth inning finally saw them break though, starting off with a pair of walks from Ben Rice and Goldschmidt to set up a rally. Jasson Domínguez singled to left but it was hit hard enough to prevent a run from coming in, bringing Anthony Volpe up with the bases loaded and no outs. Volpe managed to bring in a run, hitting a soft grounder to short that Luisangel Acuña was just barely able to scoop up and throw to first in time to convert an out from the play.
That would be all for Schultz, as the White Sox went to their 'pen and brought in Chris Murphy. The tide was turning though, and Chisholm provided the big blow of the inning with a double out to center to tie the game at three. Chisholm then stole third base on a head's up play noticing that the catcher was lazily flicking the ball back to the pitcher, and José Caballero walked to pass the baton over to Spencer Jones. Jones managed to convert, fighting off three foul ****** before grounding a ball in front of Caballero who was running on the pitch to prevent a double play opportunity and give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.

This time, Fried -- after returning from a two-month absence due to a left elbow bone bruise with one hit in five innings during last Wednesday's 5-3 10-inning loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates -- also allowed three runs on five hits and exited following three frames. Pulled after 39 strikes on 66 pitches while fanning four and walking two, Fried (4-3, 3.23 ERA) fell victim to a three-run first inning in which he started slow, allowing four of his five hits. Fortunately for Fried, the Yankees' bullpen and offense picked him up, but this was a step back from how he looked in his debut last week.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. was chief among New York's reinforcements, tying the game with a two-run double in the fourth inning that scored Paul Goldschmidt and Jasson Domínguez. Chisholm subsequently stole third base and scored when Spencer Jones grounded out to second with one out. When the Yankees led the White Sox (55-50) by a run in the eight inning, Chisholm's RBI single to score Domínguez padded the 6-4 lead and eventually break the game open. Chisholm's 2-for-4, two-RBI effort from the sixth spot in the order was the type of performance that New York needed to avoid a series-opening dud as he brought his slash line to .226/.299/.414 with 45 RBI and 29 steals through 99 games this season.
Between Chisholm's highlights, Ben Rice's go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning with two outs to score Amed Rosario gave the Yankees the much-needed push after the White Sox tied the game at 4-4 with one out in the fifth. Rice, whose 2-for-4 evening included a leadoff walk that sparked New York's fourth inning, need to be the guy in this lineup without Aaron Judge and met the moment as the second-batting designated hitter Monday. Through 101 games, Rice is slashing .275/.363/.585 with 73 RBI.
With Cody Bellinger out for the next month and change due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, Max Schuemann's second start in left field saw him also lead off but underwhelm. Schuemann's two-game glimpse is an 0-for-7 sample size after Monday's 0-for-5 result out of the No. 1 spot in the order, which only adds to questions for Aaron Boone and the Yankees with the MLB trade deadline around the corner.

The catalyst that sent the company higher was the launch of an autonomous VTOL aircraft platform with a defense variant called Thunder, jointly developed with the defense company Anduril. At the Farnborough Airshow on July 20, Archer Aviation Inc. (NYSE:ACHR) and Anduril unveiled a jointly developed, series hybrid-electric VTOL platform built for both defense and commercial missions.
The defense variant "Thunder" was of particular focus. It is a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to multiply the combat power of crewed attack and ***** ault aircraft. This marks a real pivot from Archer's original air-taxi pitch into dual-use defense revenue. CEO Adam Goldstein noted defense to be a "huge market" and said, "the applications we can bring in the defense world are quite impressive and very much needed for the warfighter."
Management noted that what sets Thunder apart is "a hybrid-electric powertrain enables the aircraft to achieve significant range and endurance, while still maintaining the necessary precision to closely optimize power through the full range of flight conditions."

The Yankees came oh so close to completing another late comeback, only to stall out after Ben Rice’s game-tying three-run homer and eventually lose in extras. They still have a chance to split the doubleheader and win the series as they take the field less than three hours after the final out of Game 1, and they’ll do so as Max Fried makes his long-awaited return from injury.
Max Fried last pitched on May 13th against the Orioles, and had to depart after three innings with noticeably lowered velocity on all his pitches. It was later revealed that he had suffered a bone bruise in his left elbow and was shut down for over a month. Rather than make a final rehab start, the doubleheader convinced the Yankees to activate Fried off the IL to start the nightcap, where he will be on a pitch count of around 60. At the time of his injury, Fried was 4-3 in ten starts, with a 3.21 ERA (132 ERA+), 2.71 FIP, and 50 strikeouts in 61.2 innings.
Fried will face off against Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler. The 23-year-old righty isn’t very subtle, mainly trying to blow you away with a four-seamer that averages 99 mph. He backs up that heater with a slider and a changeup. Expect the Yankees to have a patient approach against the pitcher with the highest walk rate (13.1-percent) of any starter in baseball. In 18 starts, Chandler is 3-8 with a 4.77 ERA (92 ERA+), 4.59 FIP, and 85 strikeouts in 94.1 innings.
The Yankees make three changes to the line from the day game. Anthony Volpe replaces José Caballero at shortstop which should ease tensions with this umpiring crew after the incident involving his pitch clock manipulation earlier today. Paul Goldschmidt gets the start at first moving Ben Rice to DH and Spencer Jones to the bench. Ali Sánchez replaces Austin Wells behind the plate.
The Pirates also make three changes to their lineup with the lefty Fried on the mound. Marcell Ozuna comes in to DH, moving Ryan O’Hearn to first and Tyler Callihan to the bench. Jared Triolo replaces Jacob Gonzalez at shortstop despite the latter homering off Gerrit Cole while Rafael Flores Jr. subs in for Henry Davis at catcher.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - During Wednesday night's top of the sixth inning, Yankees manager Aaron Boone and his bench coach, Brad Ausmus, were ejected at Tropicana Field.
It happened with the Rays leading 2-0, following a strikeout-throw out double play with Paul Goldschmidt batting and Jose Caballero attempting to steal second base.
Apparently, the Yankees' bid to video replay challenge the call at second base was denied by the umpiring crew, leading to Ausmus' ejection.
Boone reacted by bolting out of the Yankees' dugout and engaging in a heated argument with plate umpire and crew chief Doug Eddings, who quickly tossed the Yanks' manager.
It was Boone's third ejection of the season, his first since May 19, against Toronto. Ausmus hadn't been previously tossed from a game this year.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Hunter Feduccia and Yandy Diaz hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning, Ian Seymour struck out 12 and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 6-4 on Tuesday night.
Victor Mesa Jr. also homered, and Richie Palacios had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Rays, who extended their lead in the AL East over the Yankees to four games.
Seymour (6-1) allowed three runs on five hits without a walk in 5 1/3 innings. Bryan Baker worked a scoreless ninth for his 24th save.
The Yankees struck out 17 times against five Tampa Bay pitchers and became the first American League team whose batters struck out 17 times in consecutive nine-inning games. New York fanned 17 times in a 5-1 win over the Rays on Monday night.
Paul Goldschmidt and Jose Caballero each struck out four times. Goldschmidt is in an 0-for-30 slide. New York’s slumping offense had 11 hits, reaching double digits for the first time since June 17.
