After a preseason showdown against the Cleveland Browns, the New England Patriots will begin cutting down their 90-man roster. The team needs to make 37 moves ahead of the NFL's deadline on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m. ET. A majority of those personnel changes will come through the most straightforward roster reduction method: cutting players.
However, not all 37 transactions will be the same. The NFL has separate protocols for so-called vested veterans and players with less league experience. Veterans immediately enter the open market as free agents after being released, while the latter must pass through the waiver wire, where they can be claimed by another franchise or enter free agency if unclaimed.
What exactly does all of this mean for the Patriots and the NFL's other 31 teams, though? Let's break it down.
Franchises will make their final preparations before the season, with substantial changes being made to league rosters. Players will either be waived or released, but not all will instantly become free agents and be free to sign with any team.

The Browns confirmed the release of wide receiver Cedric Tillman on Thursday afternoon and they also announced that they've replaced him on the roster with another 2023 third-round pick.
They have claimed cornerback Mekhi Blackmon off of waivers. Blackmon was cut loose by the Colts on Wednesday.
Blackmon entered the NFL with the Vikings and he was traded to the Colts ahead of the 2025 season. Blackmon appeared in 15 games as a rookie, missed 2024 with a torn ACL and played in all 17 games during his only year in Indianapolis.
Blackmon has 105 tackles, three interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery for his career. ***** uming he makes it through Sunday's cut to 53 players, he'll try to add to those totals in his third NFL stop.

CHICAGO – Unable to stir enough interest in their trade chips to move more than two players at the MLB trade deadline, the Cincinnati Reds got another 29-team referendum on a couple of their players this week, with similar results.
Eugenio Suárez and TJ Friedl, both of whom were made available to every team for nothing more than the cost of their remaining contract values, both cleared waivers, according to a source with direct knowledge of the process.
Suárez, who has hit five of his 19 home runs since getting passed over by contenders at the Aug. 3 trade deadline, would have cost less than $3 million for any team that claimed him this week. Friedl, who hasn't hit at any point this season – and who got demoted to the minors for nearly a month in the first half – would have cost a team less than $650,000 in remaining prorated salary.
Suárez, a two-time MLB All-Star who hit 49 home runs last year (and a grand slam during this week's historic comeback in San Francisco), was signed to a one-year, $15 million free-agent deal over the winter to return to the place where he originally established his career as a slugger. Friedl earned a $3.8 million arbitration deal after a strong season at the top of the lineup for the Reds' playoff team last year.
Both are well-regarded players in the clubhouse.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Well-traveled quarterback Tommy Castellanos plans to play this season for No. 12 Texas Tech, the Big 12 favorite that is set for returner Will Hammond to be its starter after transfer Brendan Sorsby was declared ineligible this summer because of gambling.
Castellanos told ESPN on Wednesday he had committed to the Red Raiders. On the quarterback's verified X account, in which the bio included the phrase professional athlete, there was a photo posted later in the day with him in a Texas Tech uniform.
The decision came after Castellanos last Friday was among 10 athletes granted a temporary restraining order by a Kentucky judge to get a fifth season of college football. The NCAA announced a rule change in June allowing players who began college in 2023 or later to have five years to play five years of sports in college.
Castellanos, a freshman at UCF in 2022, went undrafted by the NFL four months ago before a tryout as a receiver with the Miami Dolphins during their rookie minicamp.

DeWanna Bonner, a 17-year WNBA veteran, will sign with the Atlanta Dream for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs, according to sources familiar with the deal.
Sources were granted anonymity because they were not permitted to speak publicly about the deal. Bonner agreed to a buyout with the Phoenix Mercury Monday in order to pursue one last postseason run in her career. The Mercury were eliminated from playoff contention Saturday following a loss to the Dream. Bonner cleared waivers and is free to sign with the Dream as an unrestricted free agent.
Bonner, 39, has averaged 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds in her playoff career. She has only missed the playoffs once in her career and will make a 16th postseason appearance in 2026.

ATLANTA (AP) — Players who leave the NFL to return to college won't be allowed to come back to the league this season.
NFL executive Troy Vincent reiterated the longstanding policy at the league's meetings Wednesday, saying players who go back to college will be ineligible to play in 2026. Vincent said any player who does that would instead become a free agent for the 2027 season.
The comments came one day after the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences banned players who were on NFL rosters from being able to play at their schools. Atlantic Coast and Big 12 conference leaders were also discussing the topic this week.
At least two players who signed with NFL teams as undrafted free agents this offseason were hoping to return to college and play at No. 11 LSU.
Tight end Dae'Quan Wright originally signed with Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi following the draft. He was waived by the Eagles on Aug. 10 and claimed by Cleveland the following day. He spent about two weeks with the Browns without playing in an exhibition game before being waived on Monday. He cleared waivers Tuesday and now wants to go to LSU to play for his former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin.

The adoption of a new college eligibility system — an age-based, five-year model designed to eliminate waivers, redshirts and roster logjams created by a surge of athletes in their mid-20s sticking in school — has been furiously challenged in the courts by members of the 2022 high school class who want a fifth year of eligibility, too.
The new eligibility system, which is replacing one that allowed four seasons of competition over five years with no age restrictions, excludes student-athletes who exhausted their eligibility during the 2025-26 academic year.
That bucket is filled with athletes who first enrolled in 2022, following high school graduation. As of an Aug. 21 report from Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, more than 150 athletes had filed a total of 18 lawsuits across 15 states. Wins against the NCAA in state courts have allowed athletes to return to college, including football players who were in NFL camps this offseason.
The phenomenon has bewildered NFL coaches, and, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the league is clarifying its eligibility rules on Wednesday.
Here's what Schefter outlined in his report: If a player signed to an NFL contract is cut, they are a free agent, meaning they can sign with another NFL team, a CFL team or return to college. But even if a player cut by an NFL team returns to college this year, they won't be subject to a future NFL Draft because they will still be considered a free agent. Plus, any player who goes back to college this year won't be able to sign with an NFL team this season.

The Seattle Seahawks waived running back Anthony Hankerson on Monday, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson, prior to their final preseason matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday.
Hankerson rushed for 1,086 yards in 2025 at Oregon State prior to entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in May. He was waived by the Dolphins in August, before signing with the Seahawks during training camp.
The 22-year-old Hankerson rushed for 10 yards on five carries, and added nine receiving yards in the Seahawks' 19-16 loss to the Tennessee **** ans in Week 2 of the preseason prior to being waived by Seattle.
The Seahawks move forward with a running back unit consisting of Jadarian Price, Zach Charbonnet, George Holani, Emanuel Wilson, Velus Jones Jr., and Jacardia Wright. Hankerson will be able to sign with another team as a free agent if he is not claimed off of waivers.

A report surfaced Tuesday from ESPN's Adam Schefter that former Cleveland Browns tight end Dae'Quan Wright was expected to become the first player to go from an NFL roster back to the collegiate ranks on Wednesday. Wright cleared waivers, per Schefter, and reportedly was poised to reunite with his old Ole Miss head coach, Lane Kiffin, at LSU.
Hours later, the SEC joined other conferences in adopting timely policy to prevent, among other things, a member institution from rostering an athlete who has previously declared for the NFL Draft and didn't appropriately withdraw.
Wright is one of several athletes from the 2022 high school class trying to capitalize on the NCAA's new five-year eligibility model. The age-based system, which eliminates redshirts and waivers, was unanimously approved by the NCAA Division I Cabinet in June but excluded student-athletes who exhausted their eligibility during the 2025-26 academic year, a group that includes many athletes who first enrolled in 2022. Essentially, the NCAA drew a line in the sand, much to the dismay of more than 150 athletes who have filed eligibility lawsuits across 15 different states, according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger. Put simply, they want in on another season of eligibility like their peers.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay was asked about the controversy on Tuesday during training camp, and before the question was done being asked, he blurted out, "Yeah, I can't even comprehend this stuff."
"It's wild. I don't know enough about it other than the fact that guys that can be in NFL camps, if it doesn't go down for them, they can go back to college."

The Colorado Buffaloes were dealt a major blow Monday when a Boulder county court denied defensive tackle Ezra Christensen's motion for a preliminary injunction, which would have granted him eligibility for the 2026 season.
Christensen's legal battle was a drawn-out process that included multiple waivers and ultimately a failed injunction. According to the denial's legal documents, Christensen's case did not meet all of the six factors the court used in deciding on the injunction.
Christensen's attorney, Darren Heitner, posted on social media confirming the denial and that his team is looking into filing an emergency motion for reconsideration. Even if that step is taken, there is no guarantee that his original motion will pass.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day was in a meeting on Aug. 23 when he heard about an unprecedented player acquisition.
ESPN reported Dae'Quan Wright, a rookie tight end with the Cleveland Browns, had an agreement in place to return to college football at LSU if he cleared waivers in the NFL.
"We are certainly in a different world right now," Day said.
Wright's potential move is part of the fallout from the NCAA's new eligibility rules, which were adopted earlier this summer and grant Division I players a five-year window from their enrollment to play for schools.
But the model's implementation left out players from the class of 2022 who exhausted their eligibility in four seasons, prompting Wright and others to seek temporary restraining orders restoring their fifth year.

On August 13, Karyopharm Therapeutics (NASDAQ:KPTI) held its second-quarter earnings call, and the story split cleanly in two. The company laid out a myelofibrosis combination therapy with data strong enough to earn an accelerated approval pathway from the FDA, alongside a cash position that funds operations only into September. A $15.8 million loan payment lands September 10, and management admitted that paying it without new financing could trip a liquidity covenant and trigger default. Investors are being asked to weigh a genuinely differentiated drug against a genuinely short clock.
The bull case rests on selinexor paired with ruxolitinib, which Karyopharm plans to submit for FDA review this month under the Accelerated Approval Pathway for myelofibrosis. The Phase III SENTRY study found statistically significant, rapid, deep, and sustained spleen volume reductions, along with a preliminary overall survival signal and hints of disease modification. At week 24, the combination nearly doubled the spleen response rate versus ruxolitinib alone, with responses showing up as early as week 12 and holding through week 36 across patient subgroups. Even when ruxolitinib was dosed below 15 milligrams a day, the combination produced SVR35 rates as high as 50%, compared with zero for ruxolitinib alone, suggesting doctors could trim ruxolitinib without losing efficacy.
The overall survival hazard ratio at the time of the topline ******* ysis was 0.43. If cleared, this would be the first approved combination therapy in frontline myelofibrosis, a disease affecting roughly 20,000 people in the US with about 4,000 newly treated each year and no combination option on the market. Karyopharm pegs the peak US revenue opportunity at up to $1 billion and plans to lean on the commercial infrastructure it already runs for XPOVIO, including its KaryForward patient support program, to move quickly if approved. On the existing business, XPOVIO generated $30.8 million in U.S. net product revenue in the quarter, with demand holding roughly flat from a year earlier even as the treatment landscape gets more crowded.
The financial picture is where the caution belongs. Total revenue fell to $33.4 million from $37.9 million a year earlier, largely because Menarini's reimbursement of development costs ended in late 2025, a roughly $6.5 million swing. Net loss widened to $67 million from $37.3 million, and while some of that reflects non-cash mark-to-market adjustments tied to the company's financing structure, the cash balance tells its own story: $65.4 million in cash, equivalents, and investments at quarter end. Management said that funds current plans only through September 2026. A $15.8 million term loan payment is due September 10, and if it goes out without additional financing or a lender waiver, cash would fall below the $10 million minimum liquidity covenant, an event of default.

Hours before their preseason battle with the New York Giants, the Miami Dolphins released veteran cornerback Nick McCloud, opening up a spot on the 91-man roster.
Then, during the halftime break of the game, Miami claimed cornerback Jai'Onte' McMillan off waivers.
McMillan, 24, played at TCU from 2021-23 and at Minnesota from 2024-25. In 55 games between the schools, he recorded 56 tackles, four passes defensed, one sack and one interception. He signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent but was cut recently.
At 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, McMillan will compete for a roster spot in South Florida for the rest of camp and the preseason.

The Los Angeles Rams are trying to sort out their quarterback room for the 2026 season. Matthew Stafford is returning as their starter, but it's unclear who will back him up after Jimmy Garoppolo opted not to return. Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson are competing for the QB2 job, and it might be a closer battle than anticipated.
Bennett has had the lead all year, but following Simpson's strong debut in the preseason, he's making things interesting. Simpson is obviously guaranteed a roster spot as a first-round rookie, but the problem is, he may not be ready to back up Stafford, and Bennett may be too good to cut.
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network told Rich Eisen that he thinks the Rams will keep three quarterbacks, in part because he doesn't think Bennett will clear waivers if he's cut. He believes another team would claim Bennett, causing the Rams to lose him.
"To me, Stetson Bennett, I've seen him do this stuff that he's done in the preseason, I've seen Stetson Bennett do that live in person several times," he said. "I think Stetson Bennett understands this thing. He can get you through a stretch of games if you needed to. I would be of the idea of, 'Let's keep three and go that route,' but hey, maybe they want to save a roster spot and see if they can get Stetson Bennett down. I don't know that they'd be able to get him down to the practice squad without him getting claimed. I would lean towards three. I know a lot of teams don't want to do that, but where they are right now – if they end up making Ty the No. 2 with their expectations for this season going into the fall, that'll tell you that he's way ahead of schedule, in my opinion."
Bennett played well last preseason and looked comfortable in the first game against the Chiefs, but Simpson is already impressing in practice and the preseason, too. If the team is confident in Simpson being one injury away from starting games, he could get the nod.

Klay Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after completing his waivers with the Dallas Mavericks, as he agreed to a contract buyout so that he can join a team that is seriously contending for a championship in 2026-27.
Considering that the Mavericks are now in a rebuild around Cooper Flagg, taking his talents to South Beach seemed like a better option for the four-time NBA champion.
The 36-year-old ended the 2025-26 season averaging 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 ***** ists while shooting 39.3% from the field and 38.3% from behind the three-point line. Even though his numbers suggest that he's no longer the same level of player that won four championships with the Warriors, a changing situation could still turn things around for Klay Thompson.

Daniel Palencia had a good year as Cubs closer in 2025 despite some injury issues. He had more time on the IL this year, first with an oblique strain and then a flexor injury.
Today, the Cubs activated Palencia from the injured list after five rehab outings, the last two of which were pretty good. He is not expected to immediately return to the closer role, instead serving as what manager Craig Counsell calls an "out-getter" in whatever situation he's needed. Overall this year in 19 MLB games, Palencia has a 2.70 ERA, 1.380 WHIP, three saves and 19 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.
To make room for Palencia on the 26-man active roster, right-hander Javier ******* ad has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. I don't need to explain to you how this makes most Cubs fans feel. The only thing I can say is that ******* ad is likely back on Sept. 1 when rosters expand.
In addition, the Cubs added infielder Gabriel Arias, acquired Wednesday on waivers from the Mets, to the 26-man active roster. To make room for Arias, infielder Owen Miller was designated for ******* ignment. He's likely to clear waivers and will almost certainly be given the opportunity to remain in the organization.

The Eagles continue to tinker with the roster as they approach their final 53 guys, and are adding some depth at center by signing Zeke Correll, and also brought back WR Brandon Hayes, who has bounced on and off the roster since late-Spring. To make room for the newest additions, the team also placed Tariq Castro-Fields on IR as he deals with a heel injury, and waived/injured WR Johnny Wilson.
Zeke Correll is a 6-foot-3, 307-pound center who spent the 2025 offseason with the Minnesota Vikings. Ultimately, he was waived due to injury as they approached final roster cuts, and eventually landed on the team's injury reserve list for the season. Correll spent last year with new Eagles OL coach Chris Kuper in Minnesota, so there's so familiarity with what they're trying to do in Philly. Right now, the depth at center starts with Cam Jurgens, followed by Willie Lampkin, who has impressed this training camp, and now Correll with get into the mix.
Wide receiver Brandon Hayes has signed and been waived several times over the past few months by the Eagles, and this time, it took less than a week for him to return to the roster. The WR room is pretty crowded, even with the team waiving Johnny Wilson due to a lingering knee injury. Hayes could make a good practice squad candidate, and someone who can take extra reps as other receivers, like DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon, come back from injuries of their own.
Wilson being waived is a shame, and also removes the biggest WR on the team. Head coach Nick Sirianni and OC Sean Mannion have both lauded the variety of skill-sets by the receiver room, and losing Wilson will affect their overall abilities. Still, the former Eagles draft pick missed the 2025 season due to injuries, and was trending in that direction for 2026. Now, he will revert to injured reserve if/when he goes unclaimed through waivers.

After being waived by the Denver Broncos on Thursday with an injury designation, third-year linebacker Levelle Bailey (broken leg) cleared waivers on Friday and reverted to Denver's injured reserve list.
Because he is landing on IR before the initial 53-man roster is set, Bailey will be ruled out for the 2026 NFL season. There is a potential workaround, however, as the Broncos could release Bailey from IR with an injury settlement. If that happens, Bailey could join another club or return to Denver later in the season.
As it stands now, though, Bailey is currently on season-ending IR for the 2026 campaign.

The Dallas Mavericks and guard Klay Thompson agreed to a buyout Friday, Aug. 21 for the final year of his contract, worth $17.5 million. And though Thompson still has to go through the waivers process, he's expected to sign with the Miami Heat, if not claimed, according to ESPN.
Thompson, 36, is a five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion known for his precision and accuracy as a perimeter shooter. With Miami, he brings much-needed shooting to a roster that underwent an overhaul after the June acquisition of star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.
While the Heat are set to roll out a stout defensive team, perimeter shooting had been one of the clear weaknesses, and Thompson fills that need. Given that Antetokounmpo is a player who commands enormous defensive attention, a shooter like Thompson should presumably have ample ******* e to operate if opposing teams send double-teams and extra pressure toward Antetokounmpo.

As the offseason continues, reports have indicated that the Lakers had their eyes on Klay Thompson as a target to get high-level perimeter shooting. He would also add a much-needed veteran presence to their roster.
Those dreams vanished on Friday. NBA insider Shams Charania has revealed that Thompson is "expected to sign with the Miami Heat after he clears waivers upon a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks," per sources from ESPN.
That hurts. It's not something the Lakers can't overcome. Missing out on Thompson means a lost opportunity for the Lakers to add a sharpshooter to their lineup. It also strengthens one of their rival teams, which already has stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

The Dolphins signed inside linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. on Friday, the team announced.
In a corresponding move, the Dolphins waived offensive guard James Ester with an injury designation.
Dix signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent on May 14.
He spent the past two seasons at Arkansas and played at Marshall and Florida State before that. He had 79 tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack for the Razorbacks last season.

When the Denver Broncos watch the film after Friday's preseason showdown with the Green Bay Packers, they will likely evaluate a pair of inside linebackers on Green Bay's roster bubble.
Zach Kruse of Packers Wire believes Green Bay will choose between Nick Niemann and Kristian Welch for the final backup linebacker spot on their 53-man roster later this summer. If Kruse's hunch is correct, the loser of that ILB competition will be cut.
That could be a notable development for the Broncos, who are lacking experienced depth behind starters Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad. It wouldn't be shocking to see Denver monitor the waiver wire for potential ILB targets after roster cuts later this month, and one of Niemann or Welch could become available.
Niemann has appeared in 71 career games (with three starts), totaling 97 tackles, three pass breakups, one interception and one fumble recovery. He has also played 1,412 special teams snaps in his career.
Welch has 80 games (two starts) on his résumé, including six appearances and one start with the Broncos in 2024. He has totaled 43 tackles and one fumble recovery in his career, and he has 1,473 career snaps on special teams.
