MIAMI — Exhale. Because at some point during seasons, that's what Klay Thompson does. And then he becomes Klay Thompson again.
For all the metrics compiled by the Miami Heat during their now-completed 3-2 preseason schedule, one stands particularly stark:
In his four preseason appearances, Thompson shot 7 of 26 from the field, but even more starkly, only 3 of 20 on 3-pointers.
And yet history says not only isn't the sky falling for the four-time NBA champion and five-time All-Star, but he only is getting warmed up.
With a body of work lengthy enough where it offers ample context, the player who stands No. 4 on the NBA's all-time list of 3-pointers made stands in somewhat familiar territory.

Klay Thompson was ice cold in his first preseason with the Miami Heat, but the four-time NBA champion isn't fazed by his shooting struggles heading into the 2026-27 regular season.
Speaking after Sunday's practice at Kaseya Center, Thompson maintained that he expects to shoot at his usual level once the games "count," brushing aside concerns about being too far over the hill entering his age-36 campaign.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra also voiced his confidence in the veteran shooting guard as anticipation builds for Wednesday's season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Brought in over the offseason to help create ***** e around Heat stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo on Miami's revamped roster, Thompson looked out of sorts throughout the preseason, shooting 7-for-26 overall (26.9%) and 3-for-20 from 3-point range (15.0%).
It was a small sample size, as Thompson appeared in four of Miami's five exhibition contests and never played into the second half of any of them as the Heat went 3-2. Still, his shooting blunders went viral on social media, fueling ridicule.

Heat player who will shock NBA world with breakout 2026-27 season appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It's not quite championship-or-bust yet for the Miami Heat, but they're as close to that status as they can get. After all, the expectations for the Heat are through the roof after they brought in two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo via a blockbuster trade. Antetokounmpo has had so much appreciation for the Heat's vaunted culture that landing in Miami was one of the main priorities for him this offseason — with his former team, the Milwaukee Bucks, doing him a service.
But at the end of the day, the Heat paid a heavy price to bring Antetokounmpo in. They parted ways with Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, and Kasparas Jakucionis to go along with three first-round picks (2026, 2031, and 2033), a first-round pick swap (2030), and a second-round pick (2033).
The Heat did a good enough job of replacing the depth they lost, as they added veterans Tim Hardaway Jr. and Klay Thompson to serve as floor-spacers in a Giannis-centric offense. Getting Bobby Portis back in the Giannis trade was also an underrated part of that transaction. Moreover, they came to terms with Andrew Wiggins on a contract extension, securing the services of one of their most important role players through at least the 2027-28 campaign.

3 Cowboys to blame for ugly Week 6 NSFW loss to Jordan Love, Packers appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Cowboys headed to Lambeau Field for a matchup between two all-time NFL powerhouses and were summarily defeated by Jordan Love's team, on a night that included a crazy Dee Winters overturned interception. Ex-Packers DT Kenny Clark turned in a strong performance, but it wasn't enough as the Packers won, 23-13.
The loss sent Dallas to 2-4 on the season and had fans wondering exactly who was to blame. The Cowboys' defense certainly deserves some, but this night was mostly about the Cowboys' anemic offense. Offensive coordinator Klayton Adams' unit was mostly a no-show. Although Dak Prescott had a decent amount of passing yards, he failed to spark much excitement, or to keep up with Love and the Packers in another disappointing effort.
Here are three Cowboys to blame after Sunday night's debacle at Lambeau Field.

This offseason, the Heat witnessed a complete change in its roster. From superstar acquisitions through trade exchanges to top players leaving impressive salaries to join the roster, they saw a major upheaval. However, two players who were unaffected by these events were Andrew Wiggins and Simone Fontecchio.
Both players not only get to continue on the team but were also offered retention; a lifeline offered to only a handful this time. Now, with the next season approaching, the players have to meet high expectations to justify their contracts.
Earlier in the summer, Wiggins exercised the $30.1 million player option for the final year of his contract with Miami. But on June 29, the Heat decided to hand him a two-year, $34 million extension, bringing his term to a three-year, $64 million contract with them overall. He will be getting $16.5 million in 2027-28 and will have the player-option season worth $17.5 million in 2028-29. This is a huge financial security for any player, especially in a team that is aggressively looking to reinvent itself at the cost of its roster.
Wiggins was a dependable starter and brought stability last season, which he needs to continue this year. Wiggins averaged 15.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.7 ****** ists per game across 68 appearances. Maintaining his distance from defense, the 31-year-old needs to focus on being a high-efficiency 3-and-D wing, a role that saw him shine last year. He knocked down two threes a game at a career-best 41.4% clip in 2025-26.
At his rate, he could surely increase his average and show improvement. For the upcoming season, Wiggins should get perimeter shooting help from Klay Thompson, who he was teammates with in Golden State.

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak addressed the media, where he spoke about what's going on at left guard. Kubiak acknowledged the "very difficult challenge" it takes to prepare for Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett, but said the players on the other side of the ball won't determine which player plays:
"I don't think so. I think you play who you feel most comfortable with. I think I said this a few weeks ago, though; it's like, when you look at guard, there's never any reason why guys can't rotate as well. I mean, multiple guys can play in the game, and we'll see how the game goes with who we start and kind of how we want to do the rotation.
But you've got to get a feel for how the game's going and how guys are handling stuff. So, nothing's settled, nothing's determined right now. It's not going to be based on experience necessarily. We're going to go with who we think should start based on who's had the best camp and kind of where they're at, and see how the game goes."
Kubiak said he didn't know if the 49ers would rotate players during the game, saying, "We're going to have multiple guys up and multiple guys ready to go. So, whether they rotate or not, that'll be determined as the game goes."
The options include Carver Willis, Connor Colby, and maybe Jarrett Patterson. Realistically, Patterson is Jake Brendel's backup, and Colby rotates if Willis looks like he's being overwhelmed.

Charles Barkley, a former NBA player, believes the San Antonio Spurs have a promising future. The Spurs already have Victor Wembanyama, a 7-foot-4 superstar who is at the center of the team's foundation. They also have De'Aaron Fox, a promising backcourt star veteran. In the franchise's recent postseason run, however, two youngsters took the spotlight.
Along with Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper demonstrated that they can contribute to the Spurs' promising future. During San Antonio's playoff run, Castle averaged 18.2 points, the second-most points on the team. Harper, meanwhile, averaged 14.1 points per game, the most from a player off the bench.

Charles Barkley issued a stern warning to other NBA backcourt players regarding their postseason performance during his recent appearance on "The Bill Simmons Show". Barkley also compared the Spurs' young guards to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
Those two guards, I don't want to see them for the next 10 years if I'm a guard in the NBA," Barkley said. "Harper and Castle, if I'm a guard in the NBA, I do not want to see them boys for the next 10 years. They're gonna be the new Steph and Klay."

Klay Thompson is one half of the Splash Brothers. That's an identity **** ody can erase, no matter where he goes.
He and Stephen Curry tore up the league with their impeccable three-point shooting and turned the Golden State Warriors into a dynasty that won four **** les in less than a decade.
Unfortunately, their partnership had to come to an end. It has been two years since Thompson left the Warriors in hopes of winning another championship.
He has a chance to do that this season after signing with the Miami Heat following a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks. Thompson decided to start fresh in the Eastern Conference and join a storied franchise that now boasts a superstar in Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Heat fans are loving Thompson's arrival. They still expect him to make an impact from beyond the arc.

Charles Barkley has often made bold NBA predictions and comparisons, but his most recent one is especially noteworthy. During an interview with Bill Simmons, the NBA legend claimed he has found a duo that could be the NBA's next Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Tight end George Kittle traveled with the 49ers to Australia, which was a sign he would play in Thursday night's season opener. It sounds like Kittle will play, but how much remains to be seen.
"It's been pretty cool to see Kittle out there looking like himself, looking fresh," offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. "How that affects him on game day and what the workload is, that will be determined. But he looks good to me.
"He's practicing full speed. He's getting a ton of reps. So I feel like we're in good shape."
Kittle tore his right Achilles in a Jan. 11 playoff game against the Eagles. He underwent surgery three days later, with Rams team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache repairing Kittle's Achilles.
Kittle made his seventh career Pro Bowl last season despite playing only 11 regular-season games due to hamstring and ankle injuries. He recorded 57 receptions for 628 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Miami Heat were among the teams Ben Simmons was interested in joining before agreeing to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Sacramento Kings. But the Heat reportedly passed on signing him despite their current priority of adding point guard depth.
According to Ira Winderman, the veteran senior writer with the Sun Sentinel, the Miami Heat turned down Ben Simmons because he is no longer a proven win-now player.
"At a certain point, a team in win-now mode has to draw a valuation line between players who can be developed/reclaimed and those needed to be able to contribute in the moment, without questions of whether they are healthy enough or still skilled enough."
"In the development bucket, the Heat have Ryan Conwell, Myron Gardner, Tre Donaldson and even, still, Nikola Jovic and Pelle Larsson. So adding an unknown quantity would have meant going without, say, a Nick Richards or Klay Thompson or Tim Hardaway Jr," Winderman explained in his latest report.
"The Kings make all the sense for Ben Simmons, and he makes all the sense for them. There is no pressure to produce in Sacramento, but rather to begin a potential climb back to relevance."

Over a decade later, one of the most shocking moves in NBA history still requires a lot of brain power to process. Kevin Durant's decision to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Golden State Warriors in 2016 is one of those history-altering events whose ripple effects can still be felt today.
After giving up a 3-1 series lead in the 2016 Western Conference Finals, Durant joined the arch-rivals to team up with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. That quartet of first-ballot Hall-of-Famers made the following couple of years skippable as they cruised their way to back-to-back NBA championships.
You know the story by now. The Thunder went all in to keep Durant. And despite their organizational pleas and pitches, it wasn't enough to convince the NBA superstar to stick around and run it back. His exit took a decade to get over as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander helped heal the scars with a Larry O'Brien trophy in 2025.
In one of an endless supply of perspectives on Durant's decision, Dion Waiters weighed in with his two cents. He appeared on the 'Real Talk with MJ' podcast in Oct. 2024 to reflect on his exit and how it affected the role player's next move as he signed a last-resort one-year deal with the Miami Heat in the aftermath.
"We was in the WCF up 3-1 against Golden State. Tricked it off, bro. We're supposed to went to the Finals against Cleveland," Waiters said. "I feel like we would've beaten Cleveland. We just messed up at the right time, bro."

Mychal Thompson thinks his son, Klay Thompson, is the exact veteran that the Miami Heat should value. But he still gave one very important warning before he starts life under Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra.
Speaking on 104.3 WQAM, Mychal explained Klay's maturity, professionalism, and focus on winning, and that should make him a natural fit in the Heat's very demanding environment.
"Klay is Pat Riley's type of player. Very mature, very adult, only cares about winning. But I did warn him. I said, 'Listen, son. I don't know how other teams handle it, but you cannot be late. If you're a Pat Riley player, you got to be on time. And being early—I should say, being on time is being late. You got to be early."
"That's the way Magic Johnson was, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was when I was with the Lakers. If practice was at 10 o'clock, they were there by 9:15, 9 o'clock, getting ready."
"So that's the main thing I told him, is I don't know what kind of practices you had in Dallas or Golden State in terms of time. When you're talking about Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra, you got to be an adult. You got to be a pro, and you got to be on time and work hard."

As we inch closer and closer to fall (you already took a sip of a Pumpkin Spice something, I know it), we can feel the optimism spreading within the basketball world.
The offseason is full of transactions, moves to improve, and swings to make things … fit. That's the key word. Context, opportunity and how a new acquisition works within what a team does will end up defining how well a transaction ends up being.
It's easy to view moves in a vacuum. Teams need to acquire talent to fit a need, talent needs an opportunity to work, etc. But my curiosity always forces me to dig a little deeper: Maybe adding this player did not address every weakness a team has, but how did it make them stronger? What can teams do with these additions that they could not do last year?
So with that in mind, I present to you my six pack of underrated fits with NBA training camps opening later this month.
This is less about Klay Thompson returning to All-Star form, less about Klay being Ray Allen to Miami 2.0, and more about the fit between the human, the player and the franchise. It's clear Thompson wants to compete at a high level, and the Heat are always going to work to compete at a high level, especially after cashing in their chips to get Giannis Antetokounmpo. Erik Spoelstra has a knack for understanding his roster, knowing where his team needs to go and getting the most out of his roster. It feels like a natural meeting of the minds.

Klay Thompson's father has warned the critics of his son ahead of the new season.
Following a disappointing two-year stint with the Dallas Mavericks, Klay Thompson agreed to a contract buyout with the Western Conference side.
At 36, Thompson is undoubtedly out of his prime, but it didn't take long for the 4x NBA champion to find his next destination.
Thompson quickly agreed to a two-year deal with the Miami Heat as he is all set to become teammates with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

The Dallas Cowboys have added another piece to their running back room, claiming Emari Demercado off waivers after the Kansas City Chiefs released him as part of their final roster cuts.
Demercado, 27, enters Dallas with three seasons of NFL experience after latching on with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent back in 2023. The offensive line coach during his first two seasons in the desert was Klayton Adams — Dallas' current offensive coordinator.
The California native is also familiar with the area as he played his college ball at TCU after beginning his career at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
Arizona chose not to tender him this past offseason which allowed him to sign a one-year deal with the Chiefs.
For his career, Demercado has rushed 126 times for 819 yards averaging an impressive 6.5 yards per carry. He also contributed 50 receptions for 324 yards, showing that he can be used as a receiving option when needed.

The NBA offseason is beginning to wind down and training camp is right around the corner in the league. For young Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe, he is going through his first full NBA summer and is preparing for year No. 2 and facing a ton of expectations.
Edgecombe averaged 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 ****** ists along with 1.4 steals per game. He had a big game in the postseason when he had 30 points and 10 rebounds in a Game 2 win over the Boston Celtics as he became the first rookie to have 30 and 10 in a game since Tim Duncan in 1998.
As he prepares for year 2, Edgecombe is in the gym playing open runs with established stars such as Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, and more.
If Edgecombe can learn anything from the likes of Irving, it would be a big step for his development. Obviously, Irving is one of the bigger stars in the league and the young man out of Baylor can learn a lot from him, especially when it comes to playing next to LeBron James. Irving spent three seasons as James' teammate with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Edgecombe can take some lessons on what to expect.

Klay Thompson knew exactly what he was signing up for when he joined the Miami Heat, and rather than being intimidated by the franchise's very demanding culture, the four-time champion says it's one of the biggest reasons that he wanted to be here.
Speaking on the Zaslow Show, Thompson said his decision to join the Heat was based on their reputation for conditioning, accountability, and championship expectations, and those reasons appealed to him at this stage of his career.
"I've had nothing but respect for the Miami Heat. I mean, Heat culture, it's not just a phrase. They live it."
"And there's a reason that their guys overachieve a lot of times, or they embrace the pressure that comes with championship expectations. So that's what attracted me here. It's like all of my friends who have played here talk about how demanding it is and how your fitness will be the best it's ever been."
"And obviously, at this stage of my career, that's what was so attractive, is I wanna be in an environment that's super competitive. And guys might get uncomfortable at times. I love that. I love getting the most out of your abilities."

Ex-Warriors 4-time champion Klay Thompson details why he picked the Miami Heat over Lakers originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Miami Heat had their eyes set on Klay Thompson for quite a while, even when it was unclear what the Dallas Mavericks were going to do with him. However, a resolution between the Mavericks and Thompson was eventually reached, allowing both sides to move on.
The four-time NBA champion was finally a free agent after agreeing to a buyout with Dallas. Thompson quickly signed a contract with the Heat.
"The Heat on Sunday could celebrate not only the addition of five-time All-Star guard Klay Thompson, but also the fact that the organization emerged from the transaction with more flexibility than some might have expected. Because Thompson agreed to a first year salary of $5.6 million, that left the Heat with the ability to fill both the 14th and 15th roster spots," Miami Herald's Barry Jackson wrote.
The Heat won the battle over the Los Angeles Lakers, as Thompson was highly interested in joining either team.

Lakers legend reveals why ex-Warriors champion Klay Thompson chose Heat over Lakers originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Lakers have tried to finish the second half of free agency on a high note after undergoing significant roster turnover. However, the back half of free agency has not been as kind to them as the first half.
The Lakers were interested in Klay Thompson, who was expected to be let go by the Dallas Mavericks. It came down to Los Angeles and the Miami Heat.
"My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote.
Thompson immediately decided to sign with the Heat after he and the Mavericks agreed to a contract buyout.

Draymond Green believes Klay Thompson tearing his Achilles during the 2019 NBA Finals stopped him from leaving the Warriors.
Thompson suffered a brutal Achilles tear in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors, which played a big part in the Warriors losing their chance at a threepeat.
Given that Thompson was entering free agency that summer, there was concern that he might not stay with the Warriors. However, Green is now claiming that the injury ensured he'd stay with the team.

Klay Thompson sets high expectations for himself and the Heat ahead of the 2026-27 season originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Klay Thompson is a four-time champion from his stint with the Golden State Warriors. With that kind of success, it is normal to want more, and Thompson believes that it will come with the Miami Heat. He just joined the team, and he is already setting high expectations for himself and his teammates.
Considering the Heat are always a team to watch in terms of ****** le contention, this could be the year they fully come back to that status. For a few years now, they have been toiling away in mediocrity. Now, they have Giannis Antetokounmpo and Thompson joining the roster ahead of the big 2026-27 season.
For a long time, people have gotten used to the Heat being a successful team. Of course, Dwyane Wade is a big reason for that, as he was part of all three Heat championships. Since they last won in 2013, the Heat have been competing, but they have never taken the top spot on the podium.
They have been the runner-up three times since that last ****** le, in 2014, 2020, and 2023. It has been a tough few years for the Heat, especially since they had to go through the Play-In Tournament multiple times. They managed to do so successfully in 2023 by reaching the NBA Finals, but they still lost.

Draymond Green watched Klay Thompson build a career as one of the best second options for the Golden State Warriors. Stephen Curry led the team on the court as the No. 1 option during the years they were contending for NBA championships. Thompson was the team's second-leading scorer until Kevin Durant joined the team in 2016, and he became the third offensive option.
Eventually, Thompson's time in Golden State ended in 2024 when he joined the Dallas Mavericks. Leaving the Warriors was not a surprise, especially to his former longtime teammate. Green claims that the other half of the Splash Brothers would have left sooner.
Green claimed Thompson wanted to show the league that he could be a No. 1 option. However, the four-time champion revealed on Wednesday's "The Draymond Green Show" that his devastating ACL tear in the 2019 Finals changed his former co-star's plans.

"Everyone tries to make Klay the guy Klay was after the injuries," Green said. "I won't go for that. What I will also say is, [it was] highly likely that after the 2019 playoffs, Klay Thompson was going to leave the Golden State Warriors and go be a No. 1 option somewhere. Highly f**king likely.

How Pelle Larsson impressed Klay Thompson ahead of his decision to join the Miami Heat originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo was a big deal for the Miami Heat because it took away a lot of their depth. Players like Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel'el Ware were superb during their time in Miami, but it also led to some of their teammates getting overlooked.
One of those teammates is Pelle Larsson, who has been a rock-solid player over the past few years. Thankfully for Larsson, he will get a bigger role this season, and he is already getting rave reviews from players who are just becoming teammates with him.
As one of the NBA's most experienced players, Thompson has a unique perspective on the league. He loves seeing role players shine, as he played with those kinds of players throughout his career, especially during his time with the Golden State Warriors.
Thompson knows what winning basketball looks like, and he sees that with how Larsson plays and works behind the scenes. Heat fans have been talking about Larsson for a long time, and how he fits into their system as a hardworking player.

The Miami Heat welcomed Giannis Antetokounmpo's newest teammate, Klay Thompson, on Tuesday. Thompson signed a two-year, $11.5 million contract to join the Heat ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season. His addition gives Miami a better shot at contending for a championship.
On Tuesday, he was officially introduced to the media, and he spoke about how being in Miami was a dream come true. Before Thompson joined the Heat, he was already linked as a potential buyout candidate. The team viewed him as a key acquisition because of his elite outside shooting, which they needed after landing Antetokounmpo.
During his introductory presser, Thompson was asked about his thoughts on being Antetokounmpo's teammate.
