Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) announced an increase in its Belvidere investment to more than $800 million, up from a previous commitment of $600 million or more, and confirmed that the plant will produce the next-generation Jeep Cherokee on its new STLA One platform, the first vehicle built in the US on that modular design, which the company claims will improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce costs.
However, according to UAW Local 1268 president Matt Frantzen, citing internal records and talks with company executives, the updated schedule pushes pilot production into the first half of 2028, while retail production is not targeted to begin until the second half of 2029, roughly two years later than Stellantis' previous 2027 initial-production target.
The Belvidere news is a grave situation developing north of the border. Unifor, the Canadian union that represents Detroit Three autoworkers, stated that Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) has signed an MOU with Canadian armored-vehicle maker Roshel outlining a potential sale of its Brampton, Ontario ******* embly plant, which has been idle since 2023. According to union president Lana Payne, Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) has yet to provide the official year's notice required by the collective agreement. Payne described it as a "lose-lose scenario," claiming Stellantis' 2023 commitment to keep Brampton staffed had been broken.
The two stories are directly related. Brampton had been scheduled to build the Jeep Compass, with retooling beginning in early 2024 before Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) paused it in 2025 and then, that October, moved Compass manufacturing to the US completely, the same reassignment that sent the model to Belvidere.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is relocating its AI responsibility unit from Google DeepMind to its global affairs division, the part of the company that handles lobbying and public policy.
The roughly 90-person team — whose work includes evaluating Google's AI models for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards and examining user behavior and the psychological effects of chatbots — is set to complete the transition at the beginning of September, the Journal reported after reviewing an internal email about the shift. Some employees on the team have raised concerns that the reassignment will limit their independence and reduce their access to the researchers developing Google's Gemini models.
Helen King, a vice president at Google DeepMind who runs the responsibility team, sought to reassure staff in the email, writing that the team's focus on emerging and frontier topics in responsible AI would remain unchanged and that publishing research externally "continues to be supported and important." King added that the team's access to DeepMind would be preserved, along with its computing infrastructure and staffing levels.
"Many teams across Google work on AI safety and responsibility, and by bringing our AI responsibility teams closer together we're strengthening their ability to inform safety for our models and products," a Google spokesperson said in a statement.
The shift is part of broader organizational changes that are integrating DeepMind more tightly with the rest of Google. According to the Journal, functions such as HR and policy are similarly being transferred from DeepMind to Google's central organization. Adley Rutschman is getting close to making his Red Sox debut and started his rehab ****** ignment on Saturday.
Rutschman was on the injured list with wrist inflammation when the Red Sox acquired him. They paid a premium price for the three-time All-Star and would love to have him back in the lineup soon. He hit leadoff for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
He walked twice and went 1-for-2. He scored two runs and had two RBIs. Both of his RBIs came on a double in the bottom of the fourth inning.

CLEVELAND — When Angel Genao was a seven-year-old, his brother urged him to become a switch hitter, and the two practiced together in the Dominican Republic.
That was the start of his baseball journey.
"He was the one who insisted on me to be a switch-hitter," Genao said via a team translator. "Actually he was the first one who gave me a baseball practice. So I attribute it to him. … He's been the one teaching me, and who told me to start switch-hitting."
Fifteen years later, that road led Genao to Cleveland, where he made his major league debut. And oh, what a debut it was.
Genao, who was promoted to the majors before the Guardians' Aug. 5 game against the New York Mets in place of the recently designated-for-assignment Gabriel Arias, hit ninth in the lineup and played third base while Jose Ramirez continues to be day-to-day with a hand issue.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An ******* ociation of thousands of FBI agents and other groups are backing a lawsuit filed by three bureau employees who were fired last year for their roles in an investigation into President Donald Trump's efforts to undo the results of the 2020 presidential election.
A legal brief by the FBI Agents ******* ociation is one of five filed by outside parties in the last week in support of the agents, who were terminated as part of a broader personnel purge by FBI Director Kash Patel that has targeted employees who investigated Trump or are perceived as being against the administration's interest.
Taken together, the filings, including from former FBI and Justice Department alumni, underscore a concerted and bipartisan pushback to the waves of terminations that have roiled the FBI in the last year and a half as Patel has sought to remake the bureau in his own image.
The briefs argue that the firings were illegal because the agents were denied due process and punished for perceived political affiliation, and say the terminations contradict decades of expectations that the bureau's "apolitical, professional career corps of agents" can work on sensitive cases without putting their careers at risk.
"The Bureau simply cannot function if individual Special Agents must choose whether to accept a lawful ******* ignment that could later get them fired, or alternatively to reject it and become subject to firing for insubordination. FBI Special Agents have long understood that they are subject to ******* ignment and reassignment at any time based on the needs of the Bureau," the agents ******* ociation, which serves nearly 12,000 members, wrote in its brief.
