The Detroit Lions now have a substantial cushion in terms of financial stability heading into their first game of the 2026 campaign. This will allow Brad Holmes and the rest of the front office more flexibility in whatever direction they see fit whether that is in-season moves or in preparation for the contracts they will need to negotiate next offseason.
But it is also an indicator of how much faith the team has put into their top two players. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell have each restructured their contracts without changing how vital they are to the squad.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (14) practices during mini camp at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
The Lions have restructured the contracts of wideout Brown and offensive tackle Sewell, creating about $35.6 million in salary cap ***** e, per Spotrac. The news was announced on September 12, just one day ahead of the Lions' season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are facing the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, and while experts are widely expecting the Jaguars to walk away with an easy win, that doesn't mean Jacksonville shouldn't take this game seriously.
The Jaguars have been extremely underrated this offseason, despite their success last year, and ***** ysts had already all but decided Jacksonville will not only not win the AFC South again, but will miss the playoffs altogether.
While the Browns may not pose much of a challenge in Week 1, the stretch of games following it are much tougher, which makes it all the more important for the Jaguars to send a strong statement to open the season. Here are five keys to a Jacksonville victory in the game.
The Jaguars' run game is one of the biggest question marks going into 2026, but pushing the run game will be more important than just proving Jacksonville still has a good running back room without Travis Etienne. Cleveland's defense was better against the pass than the run, so the Jacksonville offense should avoid playing into the Browns' strength. Jared Verse is an elite pass rusher, and he and the secondary will almost certainly be gunning for Trevor Lawrence.
Establishing the new look backfield will keep the offense out of obvious passing situations, and prevent Cleveland's pass rush and secondary from dictating the game.

Michigan rumors: Bryce Underwood spin emerges as he fights for job appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood struggled heavily in the first game of the season agaisnt Western Michigan. This has led to speculation that Underwood is potentially fighting for his job.
While much of the college football media is focused on the Hail Mary against Western Michigan, the storyline of the Oklahoma game will be the play of Underwood, according to Pete Nakos of On3.
"Despite the Week 1 highlight-reel Hail Mary that pulled off the win, Underwood's performance has been scrutinized in the ensuing days. He finished 12 of 22 for 170 yards with an interception. The Michigan offense sputtered after a 75-yard opening drive," Nakos wrote. "Sources have told On3 that Underwood had a strong end of fall camp, putting together some of his best practices yet as a Wolverine. That didn't show Saturday, but as sources pointed out, it was his first game with new offensive coordinator Jason Beck. The 19-year-old quarterback is working on building up confidence in the new system."

The Heat were ready to offer Tyler Herro a smaller contract extension before the trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Tyler Herro is now playing for his hometown team, the Milwaukee Bucks, after seven seasons with the Miami Heat. At one point, it seemed Herro was destined to be a Heat for the rest of his career, but that didn't happen because he was their best trade piece in the 2026 offseason.
After a long wait, the Heat finally have a megastar again in Giannis Antetokounmpo. Before they pulled off the trade, it seemed that the Heat were ready to keep building on their core group, including Herro. That would have involved an extension for Herro, but they were unwilling to give him the max.
Throughout his Heat tenure, Herro always had the support of the front office. Team president Pat Riley saw him as a long-term piece, but when the opportunity to trade for Giannis came up, it was hard to deny the package that the Bucks wanted.
Before that, he was also involved in the potential Damian Lillard package back in 2023, but that did not lead to anything. Herro was superb for the Heat, as he had two trips to the NBA Finals and an All-Star nod to be proud of. However, his time came to an end after the Antetokounmpo trade.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — FIFA President Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election, world soccer's governing body said Sunday.
Infantino has faced increasing pressure over his failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup.
Despite widespread calls for him to step down, FIFA said Infantino will seek next year to win a fourth and final term in office through 2031.
"The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr. Infantino will be standing for re-election," a FIFA spokesperson said.
UEFA, European soccer's governing body, has led the calls for Infantino to go, saying it had lost confidence in him and previously threatening to boycott FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup. A number of national ****** ociations, such the English FA, have withdrawn support for Infantino's re-election.

'He's a child': Paul Finebaum has strong words for Lane Kiffin amid SEC lawsuit originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The ongoing feud between Paul Finebaum and Lane Kiffin took another turn on Saturday.
Hours before LSU will host Clemson in Baton Rouge, the ESPN ***** yst Paul Finebaum ripped the controversial college football coach for his willingness to add former NFL players to the Tigers roster.
The jaw-dropping moment on SEC Nation will definitely prompt a response from Kiffin. Finebaum's commentary went in on how LSU has conducted business against the wishes of the SEC and commissioner Greg Sankey, even after the conference barred NFL players from being signed by teams.
"In a time when there is absolute chaos and morale decay in our game (Sankey) stopped what would have been one of the worst moments in the history," Finebaum said.

NEW YORK — In a small room on the second floor of an Episcopal church in Queens, a large printer beeps and whirs, spitting out posters inked with bright yellow tennis ****** . Fluorescent prints line the walls; a bible sits on the table. The song "Salamin, Salamin" by Filipino girl group Bini plays from a computer.
This is where Pau Tiu, 32, has spent the week designing and printing posters, in support of rising Filipino tennis star Alex Eala.
Just four miles away, Eala beat the United States' Mary Stoiana, 6-1, 6-2 Tuesday night in her 2026 U.S. Open debut. On Thursday, she will take on Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova in Louis Armstrong Stadium, where a new run of posters from Tiu's studio, Bad Student, will feature in the crowd.

Serie A side Roma had been working on a move for Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling in the last few days. Just when they seemed to be making progress in the deal, it appears they will now definitely miss out.
Alfredo Pedulla reported earlier today that the Giallorossi made a fresh push for the German, who had previously not given a greenlight to the deal. Roma had earlier reached an agreement with Stuttgart but the player's decision had held the move back.
Now, Gianluca Di Marzio has reported updates, making it clear that there isn't enough time to complete the deal.
Roma were anyway facing a race against time to seal the move. But now, there is certainty the versatile winger will stay at the German club.
This does come as a bit of a blow to Roma, as Gian Piero Gasperini had been keen an extra attacking signing. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens' idea hasn't taken off yet, with Malick Fofana nearing a move to the Premier League.

It was a bit of a surprise when the Seahawks waived wide receiver and return man Emmanuel Henderson yesterday, as he was a sixth-round pick who looked good in the preseason. But Henderson remains in the Seahawks' plans.
Henderson cleared waivers today, and the Seahawks are planning to bring him back to the practice squad.
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said during the preseason that he wanted Henderson thinking about being a great NFL wide receiver and an All-Pro kick returner. The Seahawks love his potential, even if they don't think he's ready to contribute in Week One.
Henderson is accustomed to having to bide his time before making a big contribution: He spent three years at Alabama but didn't get on the field much before transferring to Kansas last year. In his one year at Kansas, Henderson was chosen by the Big 12 coaches as a first-team All-Big 12 returner and a third-team All-Big 12 receiver. Now the Seahawks will hope Henderson can once again take some time to develop and turn into a significant contributor.

The Chargers announced their initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season.
While it's unlikely to be exactly like this come Week 1, let alone within 48 hours, I have plenty of thoughts after general manager Joe Hortiz and the coaching staff's moves to reach the roster limit on Sunday.
Here are eight takeaways:
The Chargers placed offensive lineman Branson Taylor on injured reserve with a designation to return, meaning he will miss at least the first four games. To maintain depth, the team opted to roster 11 offensive linemen, including Trevor Penning and rookies Alex Harkey and Logan Taylor. Rookie Jake Slaughter has already been elevated to the starting center role following a season-ending ACL injury to Tyler Biadasz earlier in training camp.
General manager Joe Hortiz flipped bubble players for future draft **** ets rather than letting them hit the waiver wire for free. The Chargers traded defensive tackle TeRah Edwards to the Panthers and sent cornerback Avery Smith to the Seahawks in exchange for late-round draft picks in 2027 and 2028. Additionally, it freed up a roster spot to retain safety Tony Jefferson, who initially seemed like he was on his way out.

After the Women's First Team sealed a 1-0 win over Como Women on Matchday 2 of the 2026/27 Serie A Women's Cup, coach Isaac Guerrero and goalscorer Lea Khelifi shared their thoughts.
"We expected a game like this. When we played them in pre-season, they had only been training for a few days, but we knew their strengths. They play with intensity and energy, and they have a solid game plan even when they are in possession. We knew it'd be tough, especially given the week we'd had, playing three matches in a short period of time. Como come at you aggressively, play player-to-player, and they always try to build when they win the ball back. I have to congratulate them for the game they played.
"As for us, a little more time to prepare would have given us more peace of mind, try a few more things out and give the girls the time they need to settle in. But the schedule is what it is, and we've embraced it as an opportunity.
"The girls have been working on our style of play, while also competing, from day one. We played seven friendlies, and I always saw their desire to win and understanding of what it means to represent Juventus in every one of those games. This run has also allowed us to look at the whole squad, everybody got playing time and they all proved they were up to the task. Even today, some players who had played a little less got minutes, and they performed well without the team's level dropping."
"I'm happy to have scored, but mostly because this was an important win for us. It's a new experience for me, so it's natural that I still need some time to adapt a little, but I feel good in this group, and I hope we can continue like this."

India women's head coach Amol Muzumdar on Saturday refused to be drawn into questions over the handshake protocol ahead of the team's Women's Asia Cup clash against Pakistan on September 5.With India set to face Pakistan again, Muzumdar said the team was focused solely on its opening game against Thailand on Sunday and would address the issue when the two sides meet.

"We try to play the best cricket on the ground and off the field stuff, we don't focus on it. We try to play the best cricket that we know on that particular day. We will speak about this when we play that game. But at the moment, we are focusing on tomorrow's game. One game at a time," Muzumdar said at the pre-match press conference.
The no-handshake stance between Indian and Pakistani cricket teams has been in place since the 2025 Men's Asia Cup, following the Pahalgam terror attack in April that year. India avoided handshakes with Pakistan in all three meetings during that tournament, including the final. The stance was subsequently maintained across senior, women's and age-group cricket.

The Indian women's team followed the protocol during their Women's ODI World Cup meeting with Pakistan in Colombo in October 2025. It was also observed during the Men's Rising Stars Asia Cup, the Under-19 Asia Cup, the Under-19 World Cup and the Men's T20 World Cup.

The stance continued during the Women's T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan in Birmingham in June 2026, when Harmanpreet Kaur's team again did not exchange handshakes with their opponents.
Muzumdar also played down India's recent T20I record, with the team having lost nine of their 16 matches this year. The coach acknowledged that there is plenty of room for improvement but backed the young side to develop its aggressive style of cricket.

"We don't pay too much attention to the form. You are talking about 16 T20Is in the last six months. But at the same time, we know what scope of improvement this team has got," he said.

"There is a huge scope of improvement. There is a young side. We are trying to play some good cricket, good aggressive cricket,'' he added.

India will begin their Women's T20 Asia Cup campaign against Thailand on Sunday before turning their attention to the much-anticipated Pakistan clash on September 5.

Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl LX in 2025 in which Leonard Williams played a significant part. That year he recorded seven sacks and helped anchor a Seahawks defense that led the NFL in fewest points allowed and went on to win Super Bowl LX. The defensive is thriving with the Seahawks and expectedly got an extension with a pay-rise that has taken his career payday to new heights.
Leonard Williams, the veteran defensive tackle for the Seattle Seahawks, has agreed to a new three-year, $90 million contract extension. The deal, reported on August 27, 2026, includes $56 million in guarantees and locks the 32-year-old in with the team through the 2029 season.
Feb 2, 2025; Orlando, FL, USA; NFC tight end George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers (85), defensive end Leonard Williams of the Seattle Seahawks (99) and linebacker Jared Verse of the Los Angeles Rams (8) watch during the 2025 Pro Bowl Games at Camping World Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images
The extension averages $30 million per year, placing Williams among the highest-paid interior defensive linemen in the NFL. It represents a significant raise from his previous deal and rewards his strong play since joining Seattle. Williams was entering the final year of a three-year, $64.5 million contract he signed in March 2024 averaging about $21.5 million annually.
In Seattle, Williams has thrived. He has earned Pro Bowl honors in consecutive seasons and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2025 and played an anchoring role to get Seattle Seahawks to Super Bowl victory. If Williams plays out the full extension, his career earnings are projected to reach approximately $250 million per Ian Rapoport.

ATLANTA (AP) — Players who leave the NFL to return to college won't be allowed to come back to the league this season.
NFL executive Troy Vincent reiterated the longstanding policy at the league's meetings Wednesday, saying players who go back to college will be ineligible to play in 2026. Vincent said any player who does that would instead become a free agent for the 2027 season.
The comments came one day after the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences banned players who were on NFL rosters from being able to play at their schools. Atlantic Coast and Big 12 conference leaders were also discussing the topic this week.
At least two players who signed with NFL teams as undrafted free agents this offseason were hoping to return to college and play at No. 11 LSU.
Tight end Dae'Quan Wright originally signed with Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi following the draft. He was waived by the Eagles on Aug. 10 and claimed by Cleveland the following day. He spent about two weeks with the Browns without playing in an exhibition game before being waived on Monday. He cleared waivers Tuesday and now wants to go to LSU to play for his former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin.

Practice went as it often does for Watson. He had some sharp throws, but then there is one like this, where he overthrows WR Jerry Jeudy and should have been intercepted:

Patriots Legends Has Positive Reason for Christian Gonzalez Not Having Contract originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It's almost impossible to tell why the New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez haven't agreed on a new contract.
The idea that Gonzalez and the Patriots aren't going to get something done is scary to consider, and the longer it drags on, the more questions will pop up.
The Patriots have to get something done soon if they want to feel confident about him staying long-term, though it remains uncertain when that will happen. Recently, Devin McCourty said a lot about the situation and why it might not be finalized yet.
"My guess would be language. I have to imagine that the Pats knew kind of where they were going to be at in average per year and new money. A lot of time with these deals, it's the language," McCourty said, H/T FanSided.

2028 four-star defensive back Zion Dobson is a key target for the Florida State Seminoles. They didn't offer him until May, but he came to a camp a few weeks later, and he's since gotten close with FSU's cornerbacks coach Blue Adams.
Their communication has been so strong that it's put the Seminoles in an exclusive club when it comes to Dobson's recruitment. The 6-foot, 160-pounder says that FSU is one of the schools that has been the most consistent with their efforts in getting him to commit.
"South Carolina, Florida State, LSU, Virginia Tech are the schools really contacting me a lot and keeping up with me," Dobson said via 247Sports.
Dobson is the No. 164 player nationally, the No. 12 safety, and the No. 7 prospect in North Carolina according to 247Sports composite rankings. Rivals industry rankings have Dobson as the No. 205 player, the No. 20 cornerback, and the No. 9 recruit in North Carolina.
He has locked in a game visit with FSU for their Halloween showdown with the Clemson Tigers. There's also game visits with the California Bears (Sept. 5), South Carolina Gamecocks (Oct. 3), Virginia Cavaliers (Oct. 17), LSU Tigers (Nov. 7), and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Nov. 21) scheduled for Dobson. So, they can't afford to slack off in their approach with him.

Going back two seasons, Liverpool had one of the best squads in Europe. On paper, a lot of talent remains. Yet even accepting many players individually and collectively under-performed last season, the squad today looks well short of what Liverpool fans expected it to be at this stage.
Lacking depth and wildly imbalanced in places, with the season kicking off against Newcastle on Sunday and work still to be done in the transfer market, there's plenty of concern and consternation amongst the fanbase. New head coach Andoni Iraola, though, says that signings are coming.
"We will definitely sign some players," Iraola told Sky ahead of the opening round of the Premier League season. "Some deals you have to wait until the end, but the end is the important part of the picture, the one we will have on September first, because it is true that we are still quite thin."
In the past, Liverpool managers have tended not to explicitly say signings are coming, tending to stick to more vague promises about the club always looking for opportunities to improve and similar. The question then is if a shift in how potential transfers get discussed is just how Iraola communicates.
Alternately, it could be an acceptance of the trust gap that has begun to grow between fanbase and club watching so many of the gains of the Klopp era seeming to have been taken apart—at times almost consciously so—since Michael Edwards returned and named Richard Hughes sporting director.

On Wednesday, A.J. Brown was asked if he's talked to Jalen Hurts since being traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the New England Patriots.
Brown's one word answer: "No."
On Thursday, the two caught up for a brief moment following Thursday's joint training camp practice. Here's video of the interaction:
If you're interested in the explicit details, Brown walked down the hill from the main practice fields on his way towards the Patriots' facility (the New Balance Athletics Center). I originally thought he might just head into the building but he instead jogged up to Hurts, who had been working on throwing to some of the Eagles' receivers, from behind the quarterback.
The two dapped each other up and shared some smiles and words for somewhere around 45 seconds (rough estimate) before Brown made his way inside.

Crystal Palace have agreed a deal to sign Chelsea defender Axel Disasi on loan without an option to buy, according to Fabrice Hawkins.
The Eagles desperately needed reinforcement at the back following the sale of Maxence Lacroix to the Blues. He was a priority target.
Palace have now turned to the Frenchman to anchor the defence alongside Chris Richards and Jaydee Canvot. Talks are ongoing with the player and his representatives.
A dry loan also gives the South London club the flexibility to sign Raphael Le Guen, a young defender they have been chasing for weeks.
Disasi could be Palace's sixth summer signing after Dwight McNeil, Anan Khalaili, Zavier Gozo, Oscar Mingueza, and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Should have shepherded a ball out of play in the 23rd minute to win a goal-kick but panicked a bit and sent it out for a throw-in, not even much further away from the goal – poor.
Good catch to stop a low Wycombe header from a corner in the 64th minute. Handled a bouncing effort poorly in the 65th minute and was lucky there was no Wycombe Wanderers attacker alert to nip in and poke the ball past him while it was bouncing under him around the penalty spot.
Not at fault for the goal but didn't have a great game outside of the penalties.
Guessed right for the first penalty after some good sh*thousing caused the Wycombe player to send it wide, went the wrong way for the second penalty, saved the third penalty by standing still and letting the Wycombe player kick it directly at him and dived the right way to save Wycombe's fourth attempt.

The season is just around the corner, and the Oregon Ducks are still missing a key part of their freshman class. Unfortunately, they might not get that missing piece back any time soon.
On Monday, defensive line coach Tony Tuioti noted that freshman Tony ******* berland still has "a ways to go" in his recovery from a car accident in the spring. The accident left ******* berland with injuries that forced him to miss the spring season, and he still hasn't returned to the field less than a month away from Oregon's first game.
"It's a work in progress with him," Tuioti said. "I don't think it's going to be anything that we'll be able to see him soon. But he's made so much progress. I think the thing that's most important is that we have him with us, and just having him in the room brings a smile to all our faces."
Cumberland was the top recruit in Oregon in the 2026 recruiting class after transferring and spending his last two seasons in high school at Willamette High School. As a senior, the 6-foot-5 defensive lineman racked up 102 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and a pair of deflections. He was also rated as a top 100 recruit in the country, per 247 Sports.
The Ducks could use ******* berland along the interior as more young depth at the position. With ******* berland on the sideline, the Ducks have turned to fellow freshman Anthony "Tank" Jones Jr., who has gained more than 50 pounds since arriving on campus and reaching 300 pounds, according to Tuioti, signaling a potential move to the interior.
