This is certainly the case for the Philadelphia 76ers, who are going into a preseason camp with a plethora of new faces, whether it was the blockbuster trade acquisition, Jaylen Brown, another marquee signing in LeBron James, or their first-round pick, LaBaron Philon Jr.
The latter of the aforementioned trio was spotted during an off-season pick-up game at the annual Rico Hines Runs, as reported by ESPN's Dave McMenamin. Hines has been an ***** istant coach with the Sixers for several seasons at this point, and his scrimmages have become a staple of the offseason for that time period.
Given that Hines is a member of Philadelphia's coaching staff, it's no surprise that there were multiple other members of the Sixers, as V.J. Edgecombe, Adem Bona, Dominick Barlow, and Caleb Love were all spotted in the gym. Tennessee State football practice is under way with a battle for the starting quarterback position between returning starter Byron McNair and two transfers − Daylin Lee from Winston-Salem State and Marcelis Tate from South Florida.
Second-year coach Reggie Barlow said no one is ahead of the others as the Tigers prepare for their season opener on Aug. 29 against Jackson State in the John Merritt Classic at Vanderbilt.
All three quarterbacks worked with the first unit at practice on July 31. Barlow said he hasn't ruled out giving freshman Justin Patton from McCalla, Alabama, a shot at the job if none of the older players take the reins.
"Daylin's experience speaks for itself; he had a real good command (at Winston-Salem State)," Barlow said. "Tate, for a young guy, he looks like an older guy, but he's only played one year. He's a good player. And, of course, we've got Byron, and then there's Justin (Patton), a freshman who's a good football player. He was here in the spring as an early enrollee."
It is a similar situation to what Barlow faced at TSU last year when three quarterbacks were locked in a battle for the starting ******* ignment among Jonathan Palmer, Caleb McCreary and McNair. Palmer earned the starting position at the start of the season before McNair unseated him in the third game. Palmer returned as the starter later in the season.

The admitted murderer Bryan Kohberger plans to file for post-conviction relief after pleading guilty to killing four University of Idaho students in a 4 a.m. home invasion attack, according to court records.
Kohberger plans to argue that he had bad counsel. Court records show he filed a petition for post-conviction relief Monday.

LAS VEGAS -- In case one has been living under a rock, the Philadelphia 76ers have acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in the big blockbuster move of the summer. The Sixers only had to give up Paul George, two first-rounders, and two second-rounders in order to acquire one of the premier players in the game coming off a career season inn 2025-26 season.
With the Celtics expected to be in a "gap year" amidst the Jayson Tatum injury, Brown decided to throw Boston on his back and average 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 **** ists to lead the Cs to a 56-26 record and the No. 2 seed in the East. He was fantastic in Round 1 against Philadelphia as well and his addition changes a lot for the Sixers.
Dominick Barlow, who is going to be a key piece for the Sixers in the coming season, gave his thoughts on the Brown addition while working out in Las Vegas.
"Things happen fast," said Barlow. "I don't know if that's something that you know we expected to happen, but here we are, and I mean it's exciting. Obviously, he's an elite player, MVP candidate this year. His team was really good without Tatum. So I thought he did an excellent job in leading that group, and I'm super excited to have him."
As with any big addition, there will be some adjustments that need to be made. Brown will be joining a team that features high-usage players in Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid along with the budding VJ Edgecombe. The Kansas City Royals have usually been bad for the past, oh, three, four decades for a litany of reasons, but one consistent contributing reason has been that they just don't know when to say goodbye to a player in service of the greater good. David DeJesus. Joakim Soria. Danny Duffy. Kelvin Herrera. Whit Merrifield. Scott Barlow. All those players were true premium trade pieces at one point, but the Royals didn't pull the trigger on leveraging any of them until after their value tanked. Add Kris Bubic and Cole Ragans to the list, while we're at it.
Why would teams want to trade their good players? It's pretty simple: good players have a lot of present value, and good prospects have a lot of future value. Depending on how talented your team is, you might want to exchange some of that future value for present value or vice versa. Trading big league players for prospects is a way for bad teams to make use of their talent in a way that works better for their timeline.
But just because it's simple doesn't mean it's easy. Have you ever had to go to your boss and explain that you and your team screwed up so badly that you're recommending your company lose money now with the hope that they make more in the future? That's what it's like for general managers to sell these decisions to ownership. Still, that's part of the job, and if you have players that could be interesting trade **** ets, it makes it easier.
Fortunately for the Royals, they have a few players who are could be trade **** ets. Chief among them are starting pitchers Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo. Wacha has arguably been the singular most reliable starting pitcher in the American League for the last three seasons, while Lugo has pitched decently and is two years removed from being the Cy Young runner up. As reported by ESPN's Shams Charania, the Sixers have signed Dean Wade to a four-year deal worth $39 million, reuniting the former Cleveland Cavalier forward with Mike Gansey, who was recently announced to be Philadelphia's new President of Basketball Operations.
Wade makes the move to the Xfinity Mobile Arena off a season that saw him hit close to career highs on offense, averaging 5.8 points per game, while proving to be quite the utility man, securing 4.2 boards per night for his team. What the stat sheet can't tell you about Wade's time in Cleveland is his vast playoff experience, having amassed over 32 games in the postseason.

The Brooklyn Nets have a little over two weeks left before they have to make a decision on who they will be taking with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Brooklyn still has some time to decide who they will take when Jun. 23 comes around, but the Nets are still going through the evaluation process for the players that they're potentially considering.
The Nets have recently visited with Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. in Orlando to watch him work out and meet with the family, according to NBA Draft consultant James Barlowe on Monday. Brown is one of the players that the Nets have been mainly connected to over the course of the pre-draft process so it seems that Brooklyn is doing their due diligence with prospects like Brown.
In some recent mock drafts, Brown has also been connected to the Los Angeles Clippers, who could be looking for more guard depth with the No. 5 pick in the draft. While Brown was at one point viewed as a late Lottery pick, he seems to have improved his stock after working out for teams during the NBA Draft Combine that was held in Chicago in May.
Brooklyn is likely going to work out virtually every player that is projected to be taken in the Lottery just in the event that a player high on their board slides to the No. 6 pick for some reason. Despite the fact that the Nets selected four guards, headlined by guard Egor Demin, in the 2025 NBA Draft, Brown profiles as the kind of guard with significant upside if he's able to get close to his ceiling in the NBA.
