The New England Patriots made four roster moves Saturday as Mike Vrabel's team continued adjusting its depth following its preseason opener. New England signed offensive linemen Darrian Dalcourt and Joe Michalski, adding two versatile interior options to the training camp roster. The Patriots also released long snapper Niko Lalos and placed guard Andrew Rupcich on injured reserve.
The moves come two days after New England opened its preseason schedule against the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium. With roster decisions approaching, the Patriots are using the remaining weeks of camp to evaluate potential depth pieces throughout the offensive line.
Dalcourt entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2024. The 25-year-old spent his rookie season on Baltimore's practice squad before being released at the end of training camp in 2025. The 6-foot-3, 309-pound lineman later spent time on the practice squads of the Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns.
Dalcourt played his college football at Alabama, where he appeared at center and guard. His familiarity with multiple interior positions could help him receive an extended look from New England during the remainder of the preseason.

A federal appeals court removed another procedural obstacle facing more than 3,000 lawsuits accusing Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META), Snap Inc. (NYSE:SNAP), Alphabet, and TikTok of harming young users through allegedly addictive product features.
The Ninth Circuit did not decide whether the companies are liable. It ruled that Section 230 provides a defense against liability, not immunity from being sued, making Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) and TikTok's appeal premature.
Section 230 has already helped narrow the litigation. The lower court found that it barred some feature-related claims while allowing others to proceed. The larger investor question is whether the surviving claims can create a liability channel based on product design rather than content moderation.
With more than 3,000 federal cases, approximately 3,300 additional California state cases, and a major multistate trial approaching, that question is now being tested repeatedly in court.
The strongest point for Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) and Snap Inc. (NYSE:SNAP) is that the Ninth Circuit resolved a procedural question, not the merits of the lawsuits.

The NFL preseason is here, giving teams a chance to showcase their rookie talent to fans while gathering valuable information on those players in their first professional snaps. Preseason football doesn't carry the same weight as the regular season, but it provides an opportunity to develop against an opposing team.
The Los Angeles Rams had a rookie debut that won't see the regular-season field for the foreseeable future. That rookie is, of course, 13th overall pick Ty Simpson. The rookie quarterback played the final three quarters in their entirety.

Needless to say, Simpson had a strong outing as the Rams won 20-12. He led the offense to a majority of its scoring, including two touchdown passes. Though the pick was polarizing at the time, his performance showed why the Rams believed he was worth the investment.

WESTFIELD — Justin Walley remains the unknown in the Colts' trio of starting cornerbacks.
Sauce Gardner has two All-Pro nods to his name. Charvarius Ward has the accolades and played in Super Bowls.
Walley is still waiting to play his first snap in an NFL game but he's already so important to the Colts that Indianapolis held him out of Thursday night's preseason game against the Patriots, two days after the young cornerback played a heavy complement of snaps in a joint practice with New England.
When Walley got back into the lineup for Saturday's short practice at Grand Park, he showed why the Colts are so high on him. Walley broke up two passes in the end zone, making an impact in a practice that was entirely geared toward the red-zone passing game. On one, Walley went up high to deny veteran receiver Laquon Treadwell; the other came on a play where Walley covered Treadwell's initial route, then cut off the veteran receiver coming back to knock it away.
How the Colts use Walley will likely depend on the health of Ward, who suffered a back injury last week and did not travel with the team to New England. If Ward — or any of the Colts' top trio, for that matter — is forced to miss time, the next player up will likely be former Bengals cornerback Cameron Taylor-Britt, and the Colts could use Walley or Taylor-Britt in the slot. From the looks of it, Walley got some work on the outside in Saturday's practice.

Shedeur Sanders has earned praise from NFL legends for refusing to get drawn into repeated questions about the Cleveland Browns' quarterback competition.
The Browns quarterback has faced the same questions throughout the offseason, but his decision to simply move on from one of them has now been backed by Shannon Sharpe, Chad Johnson and Joe Johnson.
Sanders previously snapped at reporters with, 'Next question. I answered this question 1,000 times.' He later apologised, while explaining that he was trying to avoid saying something that could be taken out of context.

Here are some observations from Day 12 of Lions training camp in Allen Park on Saturday.
▶ The Lions held a glorified walk-through at Saturday's practice. Today's observations will be heavily slanted toward a newsy press conference from Lions coach Dan Campbell and the deployment of several players who returned from injury.
▶ Interior offensive lineman Juice Scruggs returned to the practice field on Saturday. The team did very few 11-on-11 reps, but when they did, Scruggs manned the first-team reps. Lions coach Dan Campbell said that Scruggs is still very much a candidate to win the starting center job in Cade Mays' absence. Former undrafted free agent Seth McLaughlin manned all the first-team reps last week, with Mays and Scruggs not practicing, and more than held his own in Detroit's preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
While we haven't seen it yet, Campbell also said he expects right guard Tate Ratledge to begin working at center, just in case they need him to play the position in a pinch. Ratledge began working at center for the first three days of last year's camp before moving to right guard; we haven't seen him take a snap at center since.
"We're going to work him a little bit," Campbell said. "I don't know how much we'll do in team (drills), but certainly we're going to be snapping him some pre-practice. And then he's been going through some of the calls, things like that. So, we're just prepared. We have to be willing to go wherever we can go with this."

Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters on Saturday that tight end Jaren Kanak and defensive end Jaylen Harrell are out for the year. Kanak tore his pectoral and Harrell suffered a torn ACL.
Kanak was a seventh-round pick this year out of Oklahoma. He had a tackle on special teams against the 49ers and played five total snaps.
Harrell was a seventh-rounder in 2024. He had 38 tackles, 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 34 games the last two seasons and he had two tackles in Thursday's game.

Saturday morning made for some contrasting scenes during the second University of Rhode Island football training camp scrimmage. Offense and defense ******* ed heads as the Rams continued to work toward their Aug. 28 debut under the lights at Merrimack and the start of what they hope will be a third straight journey to the FCS playoffs.
Tyler Budge and Alex McClelland took the bulk of the snaps under center in place of Devin Farrell (lower body), who is still recovering from offseason surgery. Marquis Buchanan (shoulder) was held out as a precaution after a crash landing during a live drill in Friday's session. Defensive lineman Sahnai Swain-Price (ankle), running back Gabe Winowich (hamstring) and linebacker Toddrick Brewton were among those watching from the sideline.
How many of those could be in uniform against the Warriors? URI – currently ranked No. 7 in the preseason national polls and the prohibitive favorite again in the Coastal Athletic ******* ociation – is balancing present and future while chasing more glory in December.

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart made it clear he has little interest in revisiting a familiar topic.
After leaving the Giants' preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings, the second-year quarterback hinted to NBC's Bruce Beck that his latest trip to the blue medical tent was unnecessary.
"I'm not going to talk too much about the tent," he said.
The comment came after Dart was sent to the blue medical tent late in the first quarter. On second-and-10, Vikings safety Jay Ward blitzed untouched when running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. missed his **** ignment. Ward delivered a crushing hit that flattened Dart, primarily to the torso. Dart got up slowly and was immediately evaluated.
He missed only a couple of snaps before returning. On his first play back, Dart scrambled left and found rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields for a 15-yard touchdown that gave the Giants a 7-3 lead. Dart finished 3-of-4 for 26 yards in limited action.

The Cleveland Browns are in yet another era of change. They have a brand-new head coach, a shuffled roster and, of course, a new coaching staff. However, the quarterback room has remained largely unchanged since last season.
Deshaun Watson, who came to the team in a trade during the 2022 offseason, has remained on the roster as he enters the final season of his contract. Despite his underwhelming tenure, head coach Todd Monken is giving him a clean slate.

Jamal Adams's first game with the Vikings ended with an early trip to the locker room.
Adams went to the medical tent during the second quarter of the game and a cart was eventually brought out to take him inside for further evaluation. There's been no word from the team about the nature of his injury.
The Vikings signed Adams and list him as a linebacker, but he has also been seeing time at safety since joining the NFC North team. He played 11 defensive snaps before leaving the game and was credited with one tackle.
Adams played in every game for the Raiders last season, but had only played in 15 games over the previous three seasons.

The Cincinnati Bengals have some really solid early contributions from the rookie class this year.
Cashius Howell, their first draft pick, is clearly a capable pass-rusher. Third-rounder Tacario Davis looks like he'll play a key role at boundary corner. Fourth-round wideout Colbie Young will be key depth and seventh-rounder Landon Robinson is making some final-roster noise.
While a little boring, sixth-round offensive lineman Brian Parker quietly just looks like a pro's pro, too.
Parker popped on the live broadcast and eventually on film review too for his steady play. The number eventually backed it up too. Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com pointed out that Parker played 57 snaps, more than any other player on the team, getting looks at guard and center.
Over the course of that versatile work, Parker only let up two hurries on 34 pass-blocking attempts.

Allen escaped pressure and improvised before finding Coleman open in the middle of the end zone for the first touchdown in the history of the Buffalo Bills' new $2.2 billion stadium.

In his media day press conference on Friday, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz revealed that a pair of Hawkeyes have suffered significant injuries.

Gerardy saw action in four games last season, logging 29 defensive snaps and five special teams snaps, per Pro Football Focus. The 6-foot, 199-pound defensive back recorded his first career solo tackle during Iowa's 37-0 shutout at Wisconsin last season.

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers have been around since 1884, and in their nearly century and a half as a franchise Reggie Smith is one of the best hitters they've ever had. The switch-hitter will be honored on the field on Saturday afternoon at Dodger Stadium as the newest inductee into the Legends of Dodger Baseball, an honor that's been a long time coming.
Among every hitter with at least 1,500 plate appearances for the Dodgers, Smith ranks seventh in OPS (.915), seventh in slugging percentage (.528), and fifth in adjusted OPS+ (152).
Smith was already a four-time All-Star when the Dodgers acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals in June 1976 for catcher Joe Ferguson, outfielder Bob Detherage, and minor league infielder/outfielder Freddie Tisdale. Smith was the middle trade in a 14-month span during which the Dodgers added stud outfielders Dusty Baker, Smith, and Rick Monday to their already-established Infield. In each of the first two seasons with the three new outfielders the Dodgers made it to the World Series, snapping a decade-long drought.
Those Dodgers teams were insanely talented and, at times, contentious. Like when All-Star pitcher and future Hall of Famer Don Sutton told Thomas Boswell in the Washington Post in 1978, "All you hear about on our team is Steve Garvey, the All-American boy. Well, the best player on the team the last two years — and we all know it — is Reggie Smith. As Reggie goes, so goes us."
There was intended venom in Sutton's rant, but there was also substance behind it. Smith in 1977-78 hit .302/.406/.568 with 54 doubles and 61 home runs, and led the majors with a 165 wRC+. Smith finished fourth in National League MVP voting in both seasons.

Today, the Carolina Panthers will be playing their second preseason game of the year, going on the road to face Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.
Last week was a thrilling start to the summer exhibitions for Carolina—as their 33-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals ended in a buzzer-beating touchdown scramble by rookie quarterback Haynes King. Unfortunately, we won't get to see King on the field today, as he suffered a hamstring injury on that final play.
However, we will get to see starting quarterback Bryce Young—for at least a couple of drives.
According to Cameron Wolfe at NFL Network, the Panthers plan to play Young for 10 to 15 snaps. They'll be focused on tempo and operation, among other things.
That's pretty close to the preseason game plan we saw two years ago, when the Panthers visited the Bills. Head coach Dave Canales only played Young for one drive, but he did more than enough to convince the staff he was ready for the regular season to begin—completing six of his eight throws for 70 yards and a touchdown.

It's a new era for the Miami Dolphins under the leadership of Jeff Hafley. And the man they've tapped to lead the charge at quarterback during the Hafley experiment, former Green Bay backup Malik Willis, looked every bit an NFL starter during his debut with the franchise on Friday.
The Dolphins battled the Washington Commanders on Friday to open their preseason slate, and while Miami lost, Willis looked ready to take on the starting role in his limited action. He led the Dolphins on a 93-yard scoring drive, went 4-of-5 passing for 43 yards, and added two carries for nine yards.
While you never want to take too much away from the limited snaps in the preseason, it's encouraging to see Willis step up and look the part of a starting quarterback. After earning three starts as a rookie and going 0-3 in those efforts as a rookie in Tennessee, he went 2-1 in three starts over the past two seasons in Green Bay, but mostly served as a backup. It appears that his time as a second-string quarterback may have served him well.
And the Dolphins are probably going to need Willis to keep up his strong performances, because a big part of the reason why the Dolphins lost on Friday was due to the rest of the team's quarterback play during the game. Preseason games are primarily a time to get inexperienced players and backups action to help develop them and determine which players are good enough to make the final roster.
That meant a lot of playing time for Cam Miller and Quinn Ewers, and neither looked great. Ewers was a dismal 1-of-8 passing for 27 yards, also tossing one interception. Meanwhile, Miller managed just a couple more completions, going 3-of-11 for 39 yards. But he also tossed two interceptions. So Dolphins fans will want to cross their fingers that Willis's strong first impression is not an anomaly.

Preseason games are built for players like Marcus Bryant. The New England Patriots' 13-13 tie with the Indianapolis Colts will not be remembered for the final score. It might be remembered as the night Bryant established himself as the favorite for one of New England's final offensive line spots.
The 6-foot-7, 320-pound tackle started on the left side and delivered one of the best performances by any Patriots offensive player Thursday.
Pro Football Focus gave Bryant a 79.6 overall grade, the highest among New England offensive players who logged at least 10 snaps. He also earned a team-leading 85.6 pass-blocking grade and a 73.0 mark as a run blocker.
One preseason game cannot guarantee Bryant a place on the 53-man roster. It can significantly change the way a competition is viewed, however. Bryant entered the night fighting for a job. He exited it looking like New England's most dependable reserve left tackle.

Whether or not the Colts have enough pass rush juice around Laiatu Latu is one of the big questions facing this team, and with the opportunity to go up against backup tackles for the Patriots, Tuimoloau had a fairly quiet performance. In 26 pass rush snaps, he didn't log any pressures, according to PFF.
Mallory was the Colts' leading receiver by a wide margin, totaling 80 yards through the air. This performance also comes after Mallory put together some strong outings in practice. He is very much trending up right now.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa made his preseason debut with the Falcons on Friday night against the Broncos.
In two drives led by Tua, the Falcons punted twice.
The first was a three-and-out effort, netting four yards. The second saw the Falcons gain a first down and advance from their own 15 to their own 32 before punting again.
Before exiting for Cooper Rush, Tua completed three of five passes for 22 yards and a passer rating of 70.4. He also fumbled a shotgun snap before falling on it.
Tagovailoa is currently listed as the first-string quarterback. Michael Penix Jr. doesn't have a formal spot on the depth chart, as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered last season. Penix has yet to be cleared for team activities.

We've reached the end of another week folks. For a lot of people around the state of Indiana and elsewhere it might have meant you sent your kids back to school, you went back to school, or if you're a teacher you went back to work. So I hope you had a good week. Now though, it's time to look at the weekly survey results. This week I asked an admittedly unfair question. I wanted all of you to grade the Purdue athletics hire of Tommy McClelland. I know that the real answer is that it's incomplete. We simply don't have enough data on what McClelland is going to do in the role so we just can't say definitively but I at least wanted to get a snapshot of the mood about this hire.
We've got a plurality of 35% that give the hire a B with another 31% giving it a C. 15% each for D and F with only 4% giving it an A. I think that the main thing weighing him down of course is the foot in the mouth comment about national ****** les and IU. I'll just let you know that I went out for a friend's birthday yesterday and this got brought up. One of the women said (and I'm paraphrasing here) "I don't know ****** about sports and even I know that was dumb." So the quote break through and just means that McClelland is going to have to do more to prove it to fans. So, let's get it done Tommy.

Tua Tagovailoa's Falcons debut on Friday showed that he and the rest of the Atlanta offense have some work to do.
Granted, it was a brief outing, with Tagovailoa only playing two series with the starters in Atlanta against the Denver Broncos, and it wasn't the full lineup. RB Bijan Robinson and RT Jawaan Taylor both sat out, and Drake London only played a few snaps.
But even against a good Denver defense that fielded some of its starting unit, the Falcons' offense showed little of the firepower they're hoping for in the regular season, with their three main playmakers back.
On Tagovailoa's first series, the Falcons went three and out. Tua dropped a shotgun snap that hit him squarely in the hands, leading to a sack, and they punted one play later.
The second series wasn't much better. The Broncos were getting pressure often, with Tagovailoa having to throw multiple passes away. He was hit hard on third down, which might have led head coach Kevin Stefanski to say no mas.
