ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Anaheim Ducks will retire the number of longtime captain Ryan Getzlaf during a ceremony Jan. 30.
Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli announced the honor Tuesday for Getzlaf, who retired in April 2022 after a 17-year NHL career spent entirely in Anaheim.
Getzlaf is the top scorer in Ducks history, racking up 1,019 points in a franchise-record 1,157 games while also becoming the team's career ******* ists leader and its top playoff scorer. He was the Ducks' captain for his final 12 seasons, the longest tenure in team history.
The Saskatchewan native was one of the top playmaking centers in hockey throughout his career, winning a Stanley Cup ******* le in 2007 and adding Olympic gold medals for Canada in 2010 and again in 2014, when he was also the runner-up for the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP.
"Ryan Getzlaf's impact on the Ducks will be felt for generations to come," the Samuelis said in a statement. "While no player in club history played more games or scored more points, it's his leadership, championship DNA and community contributions we will remember most. He's a legacy player who rightfully will have his jersey hung alongside Teemu Selanne, Paul Kariya and Scott Niedermayer at Honda Center."

Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Jean-Mattéo Bahoya is set to join Leeds United after the Premier League side moved decisively for the 21-year-old on deadline day. Sky Germany, Sport Bild and The Athletic all report that Leeds entered concrete negotiations with Frankfurt on Tuesday. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano subsequently reports that an agreement has been reached on a loan deal containing a mandatory €30m purchase clause.
The development comes just two days after another proposed move to England collapsed. Get German Football News reported on Sunday that Bahoya had personally rejected a transfer to Hull City despite Frankfurt and the newly-promoted Premier League side having already reached a verbal agreement at club level.
Frankfurt nevertheless remained prepared to negotiate a late departure for the France U21 international. Bahoya joined Eintracht from Angers SCO for approximately €8m in January 2024 and remains under contract through 2029. The winger has since made 78 competitive appearances for the RheinMain club, registering 15 scorer points.
A €30m permanent transfer would consequently leave Frankfurt with a significant profit on a player currently valued at €25m by Transfermarkt.
Bahoya required some time to establish himself after arriving from Angers, but gradually developed into one of Frankfurt's more intriguing young attacking players. The Frenchman spoke about overcoming his difficult initial adjustment to life in Germany last October, crediting Eintracht's French-speaking contingent with helping him settle both on and off the pitch.

Michigan men's basketball freshman Brandon McCoy Jr., one of the top-ranked players of the 2026 recruiting class, will miss the entire 2026-27 season due to injury, the program announced on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
McCoy Jr. suffered an ACL injury in his right knee, per the announcement. The injury occurred in an exhibition game against KK Mega SUPERBET in Montenegro, the final game of Michigan's European tour.

LONDON (AP) — United States striker Folarin Balogun is set to head to Premier League team Everton on a transfer from Monaco, British media reported on Monday.
The transfer fee offered by Everton is reported to be in the range of 40 million pounds ($54 million) on a four-year deal, the British Press ******* ociation said. It said personal terms had yet to be worked out before the deal could be completed prior to Tuesday's transfer deadline.
The 25-year-old Balogun, who had two years remaining on a contract at Monaco, gained attention this summer scoring three goals for the United States as it reached the knockout stage of the World Cup. He was the top scorer for the U.S. team.
He also made headlines after drawing a red card and a one-game suspension in a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in a round-of-32 match.
The one-game suspension was deferred by FIFA after U.S. President Donald Trump intervened, allowing Balogun to play in the round of 16. Balogun eventually played in the 4-1 loss to Belgium that ended the U.S. team's home World Cup run.

The Atlanta Hawks are staring down a roster that's too bloated and too messy. Right now, the count sits at 17 players, yet the league mandates a strict 15 before the regular season tips off. That creates a brutal math problem for the front office in Atlanta. They can't keep everyone. Two players have to go, and the choice is getting harder by the day.
Reports confirm the team needs to trim the list before training camp opens. Corey Kispert, Buddy Hield, Ryan Nembhard, Devin Carter, and Mouhamed Gueye are all part of the existing group. Each brings complications that make a trade sticky. Kispert holds an undesirable contract that might require Atlanta to attach draft picks just to move him. The team hates doing that, but they have no real choice. The math simply doesn't work otherwise.
Hield is on a deal that expires soon, yet no one wants to pay him nearly $10 million this season. He couldn't even crack the rotation last year. Carter and Nembhard have trade lockouts lasting until late August and mid-September. Gueye is out with a foot injury that will keep him sidelined until November or later. He'll miss the entire preseason. Keeping him on the active list makes no sense for a team that needs to win now.
There's a gaping hole at small forward that needs filling. The current depth chart lists Dyson Daniels at the spot, with Aaron Wiggins and Lu Dort behind him. Dort is capable of playing guard or forward, but he was nearly unusable for OKC during the postseason. Injuries hurt his production during the regular season. Relying on him to be the answer is a risky gamble for Atlanta.
The team should look to swap out a non-contributor like Kispert for a short-term solution. This wouldn't hurt the cap sheet in the long run. A deal with the Denver Nuggets could bring in Cameron Johnson. Johnson gives the Hawks a reliable scorer who can play the position right away. The trade would also include Jericho Sims and a 2028 second-round pick. That move clears the logjam and adds real depth.

Joe Root has added another major record to his remarkable Test career, surpassing Ricky Ponting to become the highest run-scorer in Test history on home soil.

The England captain reached the milestone during the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's in London. Root came to the crease on Day 2 and made 24 before Pakistan pacer Mohammad Ali dismissed him lbw.

Although Root was unable to turn the start into a substantial innings, those 24 runs were enough to take him past Ponting's long-standing mark.

Root now has 7,594 Test runs in England, moving ahead of Ponting's 7,578 runs accumulated in Australia. India's Sachin Tendulkar occupies third place on the list, having scored 7,216 Test runs in India.
Root's latest achievement adds another landmark to a career that has already seen him climb to the top of several major Test batting charts.

The England star has reached his 7,594 home runs in 89 Tests and 156 innings, averaging 53.85. His record includes 24 centuries and 35 fifties, with a highest score of 254.

Ponting finished his home career with 7,578 runs from 92 Tests and 154 innings at an average of 56.97. The former Australia captain registered 23 hundreds and 38 fifties, with a best of 257.

Tendulkar is next on the list with 7,216 runs from 94 Tests and 153 innings in India, while Mahela Jayawardene and Jacques Kallis complete the top five.

Ever since the great Claude Rains first uttered the immortal line "Round up the usual suspects!" in Casablanca, the phrase has been ingrained in the popular lexicon — so much so that it inspired the ****** le of an entirely different movie nearly 50 years later. On Saturday, a struggling Juventus were buoyed by a pair of very unusual suspects — guys most fans figured would be gone, or at least on their way out the door, by this point in the transfer window. Unable to penetrate a deep-lying Parma defense, it was Nico González who gave a moribund attack an instant shot in the arm, forcing a magical save before scoring a deflected goal off his own rebound to open the scoring. Then, with two minutes left, the game was sealed by another unlikely goalscorer: Teun Koopmeiners, who had just come on after an injury to Andrea Cambiaso and finished off a quick attack with a beautiful finish.
The unlikely redemption arcs from players most ****** umed were out of the team's plans, or at least on the very fringes, were welcome developments for a team that learned this week that their talisman, Kenan Yildiz, would miss two to three months once he undergoes surgery on a broken metatarsal. After a first half that seemed to be crying out for his creativity, it was the transfer-listed González who gave the Bianconeri the necessary spark to take Parma down 2-0 as they began to look forward to next week's big match against AC Milan.

The Minnesota Timberwolves do not need to beat every top team in the Western Conference to finish first. They need to handle the long stretch of ordinary games better than their closest rivals, and the changes made this offseason give them a better chance to do that.
After going 49-33 last season, Minnesota enters 2026-27 with more ways to keep winning when they are not at their best.
A top seed is built across 82 games. Stars decide plenty of those games, but the standings can also turn on the nights when a starter misses time, the shots stop falling, or a team does not have its best stuff.
That is where Minnesota can make up ground. Anthony Edwards remains the team's main scorer, yet the Wolves have added enough help that they should not need him to rescue every difficult night.
The biggest change is LaMelo Ball, who averaged 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.1 ****** ists in 72 games for Charlotte last season.

Jofra Archer produced the fastest spell of his Test career as England bowled Pakistan out for 110 on Day 2 of the second Test at Lord's and took complete control of the match.

England's pace attack made full use of the conditions after Pakistan resumed with hopes of staying in the game. Ollie Robinson finished with 4/11, Archer took 3/26 and Josh Tongue returned 2/27 as Pakistan were dismissed for 110, giving England a first-innings lead of 180 runs.

Archer set the tone with a five-over spell before lunch that brought the first breakthrough. According to CricViz, his opening spell averaged 90.7 mph, with some deliveries touching 94 mph. He dismissed Pakistan captain Shan Masood, who was caught behind, as the visitors went into lunch at 16/2 after 14.1 overs.

Despite the numbers on the speed gun, Archer said he was not convinced they were accurate.

"Nah, the speed gun isn't working properly," the 31-year-old said. "I saw some of them [speeds] and I was like, it didn't really feel that way. I don't know who's up in the box working it, but thanks. I remember playing here in the Ashes in 2019 and thinking the same thing. Maybe the speed guns are a little bit dodgy here."

Robinson and Tongue continued the pressure after Archer's opening burst. Archer praised the pace attack for working together rather than relying on one bowler.

"Everyone chips in. Ollie's been phenomenal since he started [playing] again. Gus and Tonguey, everyone's picking up the slack," Archer said. "With this attack you don't have to go and do too much. You don't have to try too hard. You know someone's going to back you up."

Pakistan's batting struggled throughout the innings. Opener Azan Awais was the only batter to offer resistance with 46, before pulling Robinson to deep square leg. Saud Shakeel was the next highest scorer with 16.

England ended the day on 81/3 in their second innings, extending their overall lead to 261 runs.

Even with rain forecast on Day 3, England remain in a commanding position as they look to secure their first home Test series win in two years.

Bradley Barcola (23) is set to travel for his medical ahead of completing a transfer to Liverpool in the next 24 hours after a total agreement was reached with Paris Saint-Germain, according to The Athletic. The French international forward has already reached an agreement on personal terms with the Premier League club.
Liverpool identified Barcola as one of their main targets to replace Mohamed Salah, who left on a free transfer this summer to join Trabzonspor. The former Lyon forward was keen on the move to Anfield with the opportunity for more regular playing time. The Reds are set to pay £107m upfront for the 23-year-old, with an extra £10m in performance-related add-ons included in the deal.
After the completion of medical tests, the forward will pen terms on a five-year contract at Anfield. Liverpool fans will be hoping he can add some much needed firepower to their attack in the absence of one of their greatest goalscorers ever.

Sri Lanka batter Sonal Dinusha emerged as one of the biggest positives from the drawn two-Test series against India, producing a remarkable display of resilience and consistency to thwart the visitors' hopes of a series clean sweep.

Dinusha scored three centuries across his four innings in the series, finishing as the leading run-scorer with 420 runs at an average of 140.00. He also faced 722 deliveries, the most by any batter in the series, underlining the patience and endurance that made him such a difficult player for India to dislodge.

His performance has now earned high praise from former India Test batter Cheteshwar Pujara, who believes the young Sri Lankan has shown glimpses of two of the country's greatest modern-day batters, ****** ar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

Manager Unai Emery said Ollie Watkins apologised for refusing to play for Aston Villa on Sunday as he paid an emotional tribute to departing striker.

Kirsty Hanson has swapped Aston Villa for Tottenham and there is reason to believe Spurs have quietly pulled off a recruitment masterstroke.
The 28-year-old was the third-highest goalscorer in the WSL last season despite the Scotland forward's side labouring in ninth place in the table.
With 12 goals in 22 matches, only PFA player of the year Khadija Shaw and England striker Alessia Russo scored more than her.

NaLyssa Smith has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season, the Las Vegas Aces announced Thursday. Smith, one of the Aces' starters and a key part of last year's championship team, suffered a non-contact left leg injury against the Toronto Tempo on Sunday and left the game immediately.
Smith was the fourth-leading scorer on the Aces' active roster with 11.7 points per game and was the second-leading rebounder with 6.4 per contest. She was also leading the WNBA in field-goal percentage (63.8 percent). By most advanced metrics, she was the most valuable player on Las Vegas outside the big three of A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray.
"Lyss is a soldier," Wilson said postgame Sunday. "God has his hands on her, and we're going to continue to be beside her through this whole process."
The Aces acquired Smith on June 30 last season. She joined the starting lineup one game later, and the team went 21-5 the rest of the way before winning a third **** le in five seasons.
The team now has a gaping hole at the power forward slot. Head coach Becky Hammon often closes with a small lineup, with either Gray or Jewell Loyd playing the 4 on defense. However, for the rest of the game, Brianna Turner and Cheyenne Parker-Tyus are closer to centers; Turner has offensive limitations while Hammon doesn't appear to trust Parker-Tyus' defense. Rookie Justine **** ott seems unlikely to gain a larger role in the rotation, as she has played only 81 minutes in 2026 thus far.

The move of LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers has everybody buzzing. Arguably the greatest player to ever play the game has decided to continue his brilliant career in the City of Brotherly Love and join Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown to form one of the more talented starting lineups in NBA history.
James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, has spent the previous eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers as he helped the franchise win a **** le in 2020. He won finals MVP and also led the Lakers from the play-in tournament to the Western Conference finals in 2023.
As James now heads to join Embiid and the Sixers, former Philadelphia coach Brett Brown gave his thoughts on the move in an interview with Liberty Ballers:
"I think it's fantastic for the city," Brown said over the phone Tuesday night, as he drove with his family to Ventnor, NJ, for some shore time. "I think it's an endorsement to the players and Nick (Nurse) that LeBron chose them. There's a lot of great things to be admitted with LeBron's decision to come to Philadelphia, and Jaylen (Brown)'s trade. It's real. They've got a team that is as good as anybody in the league. We're always relying on health and luck and all that, but shoot, to start with, they put that group on the floor..."
Brown, obviously, has a great relationship with Embiid from his time in the City of Brotherly Love. After he scored 70 points against Brown's San Antonio Spurs back in 2024, the two shared a moment and Embiid gave his first NBA coach a lot of love and respect. The Sereias da Vila have qualified for the 2026 Campeonato Paulista Feminino Play-in. In the 7th and final round of the group stage, Santos FC beat Mirassol 1-0 on Wednesday night (26) at Gabriel Marques da Silva Stadium in Santana de Parnaíba (SP), securing a place in the knockout stage of the state tournament. Santos' goal was scored by top scorer Ketlen.
With the win, Peixe finish the first phase with nine points, two wins, three draws, and two losses. In the Play-in, Alvinegro Praiano will face rivals São Paulo. Before that, however, coach Marcelo Frigerio's side will have a break from matches, as the Paulistão knockout stage begins on November 18 with the first leg. The second leg will be played on the 22nd.

The match – Needing a win to seal qualification, Santos FC started the match on the front foot. Just 15 minutes in, Ketlen latched onto a great long pass from Katrine, burst into the box, and chipped it over goalkeeper Agatha, narrowly missing the crossbar.
Mirassol responded right away and had two chances, but both were denied by fine saves from Taty Amaro. The following minutes saw a tightly contested midfield battle with few opportunities for either side.

Draymond Green watched Klay Thompson build a career as one of the best second options for the Golden State Warriors. Stephen Curry led the team on the court as the No. 1 option during the years they were contending for NBA championships. Thompson was the team's second-leading scorer until Kevin Durant joined the team in 2016, and he became the third offensive option.
Eventually, Thompson's time in Golden State ended in 2024 when he joined the Dallas Mavericks. Leaving the Warriors was not a surprise, especially to his former longtime teammate. Green claims that the other half of the Splash Brothers would have left sooner.
Green claimed Thompson wanted to show the league that he could be a No. 1 option. However, the four-time champion revealed on Wednesday's "The Draymond Green Show" that his devastating ACL tear in the 2019 Finals changed his former co-star's plans.

"Everyone tries to make Klay the guy Klay was after the injuries," Green said. "I won't go for that. What I will also say is, [it was] highly likely that after the 2019 playoffs, Klay Thompson was going to leave the Golden State Warriors and go be a No. 1 option somewhere. Highly f**king likely.

If it's Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel that have emerged as India's batting stars of the future in this series, Sonal Dinusha is making a similar statement for Sri Lanka. The left-hander followed his scores of 100 and 84 in Galle with an unbeaten 85 (137b, 2x6) to lead a gritty fightback on a rain-hit third day of the second Test at SSC on Tuesday.

Dinusha found an able ally in fellow youngster Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who struck 80 (133b, 9x4) in only his second Test innings, as Sri Lanka frustrated India for large parts of the day before ending on 265 for eight. The hosts still require 38 runs to avoid the follow-on after India posted 503 for nine declared, but the resistance shown by their young batting brigade has ensured they remain in the contest.

Dinusha, now the leading run-scorer of the series with 269 runs at 134.50, was closing in on a second Test century in as many matches when rain and bad light forced an early finish to the proceedings. Together with Lahiru **** ara (8 batting), he added an unbeaten 35-run stand for the ninth wicket, after earlier sharing a crucial 57-run partnership with Keshara Nuwantha (18).

The 25-year-old has now registered three consecutive 80-plus scores in the series, underlining his credentials as a long-term solution to Sri Lanka's batting woes in the middle order. With Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal unavailable, Dinusha has shouldered responsibility admirably.

India had appeared well placed to secure a sizeable lead and potentially enforce the follow-on after reducing Sri Lanka to 216/7. However, Dinusha and the lower order displayed plenty of resolve to blunt the visitors' bowling attack.

Earlier, Sri Lanka showed intent from the outset. Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis (32) stitched together an 87-run third-wicket partnership, helping the hosts add 122 runs while losing only two wickets in the opening session. Sooriyabandara brought up his maiden Test fifty off 76 **** before falling to Ravindra Jadeja while attempting a late cut.

Prasidh Krishna was India's standout bowler, returning figures of 3/57. The pacer provided the early breakthrough when debutant opener Kamil Mishara (19) gloved a sharply rising delivery to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. Prasidh later removed Kamindu with another short ball.

Manav Suthar then dismissed captain Dhananjaya de Silva for 8 with a delivery that spun away sharply, while Mohammed Siraj accounted for Niroshan **** wella, who gloved a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Jurel for a duck.

Yet, Sri Lanka refused to surrender. Aided by interruptions and determined lower-order resistance, Dinusha ensured India were left waiting for the final two wickets.

Not to everyone's delight, Elversberg are active in the transfer market ahead of their first-ever top-flight season. The smallest town to be represented in Bundesliga is backed by investor Frank Holzer, who is the head of pharmaceutical company Ursapharm, which didn't go well with the traditional ethos of German football.
After missing out on a promotion the previous season with a narrow defeat to Heidenheim in the playoff, Elversberg faced a similar scare in the final month of the 2. Bundesliga campaign. A defeat to eventually relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf made them wait until the final matchday of the season to write history.
The club from a town of 13,000 inhabitants has only made the jump to the second division in 2023. Despite the promising 2024/25 campaign, few predicted them to be around the top once again since their long-serving coach Horst Steffen was poached by Werder Bremen, while top scorers Fisnik Asllani and Muhammed Damar returned to their parent club Hoffenheim.
And, in the middle of the season, 12-goal hero Younes Ebnoutalib joined Eintracht Frankfurt. To their credit, Vincent Wagner's side maintained their momentum after the departure of the Moroccan attacker with David Mokwa proving to be the perfect replacement.
Their form at the Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde was a big factor as Hertha and Schalke were the only teams to return home with three points. In the end, Elversberg followed the latter to win automatic promotion to Bundesliga.

The 2026 regular WNBA season comes to an end next month, and there are already a number of players in contention to be named this year's MVP.
Caitlin Clark continues to shine for the Indiana Fever and recently finished a game with 37 points and 10 ***** ists.
Elsewhere, her Fever teammate, Kelsey Mitchell, is one of the highest scorers in the league and now holds the record for most games in a row with at least 20 points scored.
As ever, though, multi-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson is in great form and could pick up another award this season.

It was one of the riskiest singles Dhruv Jurel would have taken in his Test career. Anxious to complete his second Test century — and first overseas hundred — after being stranded on 99 for 12 ******* and made to wait by rain while on 95, Jurel punched the ball towards mid-off and sprinted for a single that just wasn't on.

The ball travelled quickly to the fielder after bouncing. But luck smiled on the 25-year-old batter. The fielder missed the direct hit and Jurel dived to complete the run and his century, which came off 171 ******* and had the entire Indian dressing room applauding as they shared the tension. Mohammed Siraj celebrated wildly, giving Jurel a bear hug.

Powered by Jurel's composed and flawless unbeaten 115 off 177 ******* , with nine fours and two sixes, and Rishabh Pant's entertaining 63 off 89 ******* , with six fours and two sixes, India declared at 503 for nine. Then, they reduced Sri Lanka to 8/2 on Day Two of the second and final Test in Colombo on Monday.

The hosts were clearly unhappy about being asked to bat in fading light. Yashasvi Jaiswal pulled off a brilliant diving catch at gully to send back Lahiru Udara for one off Prasidh Krishna in the second over.

In the third over, the hosts suffered another blow when nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya was trapped LBW for two by a fast, full delivery from Manav Suthar. Jayasuriya's agitated reaction after being dismissed reflected Sri Lanka's unhappiness at being asked to bat so late in the evening.

Kamil Mishara was batting on five when stumps were drawn at 5:51pm after an extended session. Shubman Gill and Co. deserve credit for their bowlers' early blows, as they did not leave the field even when the covers were being brought on because of the dark, wet conditions a few minutes earlier.

With the hosts trailing by 495 runs, India are now in control of the Test.

Jurel was involved in two vital partnerships, adding 112 for the seventh wicket with Pant, which lifted India from 307 for six, and 39 for the eighth with Manav Suthar. During his stand with Pant, Jurel played the ideal foil, reaching a patient fifty off 97 ******* .

Like Devdutt Padikkal, Jurel has enjoyed a breakout series. Having arrived in Sri Lanka without a fifty in eight innings and under pressure from Sarfaraz Khan for the No. 6 spot, he made a crucial 51 in the first Test and now has 173 runs in two Tests at 86.50.

Rishabh Pant, meanwhile, struck his 21st Test half-century and became India's leading run-scorer in World Test Championship history, surpassing Shubman Gill. Pant now has 2,948 runs in 42 WTC Tests, ahead of Gill's 2,917.

Earlier, India resumed on 300 for five and lost debutant Saransh Jain early for six.
