WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Friday that his $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund is "dead" while also continuing to defend it, further complicating his administration's negotiations with two Republican senators who are blocking his attorney general nominee in protest.
Trump told reporters at Camp David on Friday morning that administration officials had "agreed not to have a fund" that compensates his political allies, yet made clear that he disagrees with that decision.
The comments came hours after an early morning social media post in which Trump said people who had been prosecuted by the Justice Department — many of them for their involvement in the violent Jan. 6, 2001, attack on the Capitol — "are suffering still, many ruined, and I felt that they should be given compensation for what has been done to them."
Trump's reluctant declaration that the fund won't be created came as Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, both members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, say they won't support Todd Blanche's nomination for attorney general until they see that promise in writing. They have been working for weeks with the White House and Blanche, who is now the acting attorney general, to produce a document to that effect, but both senators have said they aren't satisfied so far.
"The President made it clear today that the so-called Anti Weaponization Fund is still alive, which is exactly why we are attempting to formally end it," Tillis said after Trump's initial social media post.

A search resumed Thursday, July 30, for a 10-year-old girl who remains missing after she and two other children, including a now-deceased 10-year-old boy, entered the Passaic River in northern New Jersey.
The boy's body was recovered around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, several hours after emergency crews were called to the river near Pulaski Park and Dundee Island Park in Passaic, according to Passaic Mayor Hector Lora. Authorities continued searching overnight and planned to resume water operations Thursday morning if conditions required crews to pause overnight efforts.
An 11-year-old girl made it safely out of the river, the New Jersey Bergen Record, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. According to her account, her 10-year-old brother may have saved her life by pushing her toward safety before he went under the water, CBS News reported.
Investigators are still working to determine how the three children ended up in the river. Lora said officials' priority remains locating the missing girl and supporting the children's families.
The body of the 10-year-old boy was found about 30 feet from where the children entered the river, officials said. As crews continued searching for the missing girl, the operation shifted from a rescue mission to a recovery effort.

SEATTLE (AP) — Preliminary testing showed the bullets that killed two bystanders during a shootout at a crowded Seattle food festival last weekend didn't come from the gun a 15-year-old arrested at the scene was seen firing, police said in court documents filed Wednesday.
The teen repeatedly shot an untraceable ghost gun into a crowd, police said, and the King County prosecutor's office filed charges of first-degree ****** ault with a firearm and unlawful possession of a handgun.

Police believe it was gang-related, and they continue searching for others who might have been involved.

Uefa's extraordinary decision to boycott the World Cup should Infantino get his way has been followed by two more federations, the Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf, rejecting his proposals. Uefa now has enough support to comfortably defeat Infantino if a vote of Fifa's 211 member **** ociations goes ahead next month.

Whether Infantino's plans, understood by The Independent to have been in the works for over a year, even survive for that long is another matter. Infantino is also under mounting pressure from within Fifa itself. The president's long-time adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, described as a heavyweight figure within the organisation, resigned in protest on Friday. "Football has been central to my life, and after more than 35 years in banking, I understand both the value of this **** et and the consequences of giving part of it away," he said in a statement. "That is why this proposal should be rejected." If even the Fifa suits have seen enough, it tells you that Infantino has gone too far.
In their own statement in the early hours of Friday morning, Fifa provided some "clarifications" around their private investment proposals, insisting that their "planned consultation process was disrupted by incorrect media reports". But it may not stop some of Infantino's steadfast allies from switching sides. Now, he's chasing something bigger. Speaking with reporters at Jets training camp, Wilson said he's focused on doing whatever the New York Jets need him to do to play meaningful football late into the regular season.
"Whatever they expect out of me, I got to do that," Wilson said. "If they expect a little more, I got to do that. I believe we have the pieces in place. That will get us to playing that meaningful football in December."

Synlogic (USOTC:SYBX) agreed to merge with privately held Caldera Therapeutics in an all-stock transaction to create a new public company.
A concurrent upsized private placement is expected to raise approximately $278 million to support development of CLD-423 through Phase 2 clinical trials.
The combined company will operate as Caldera Therapeutics and intends to list on the Nasdaq Capital Market under the ticker symbol CALD.
CLD-423 is a potential first-in-class bispecific antibody targeting TL1A and IL-23p19 for ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and other immune-mediated disorders.
