Real Madrid beat Rayo Vallecano 4–1 at the Bernabéu, with Kylian Mbappé delivering two goals and an ****** ist, Álvaro Carreras making an electric start, and Arda Güler producing a spectacular cameo off the bench. The scoreline was convincing, though Rayo's second-half improvement ensured Thibaut Courtois still had plenty of work to do.
Thibaut Courtois — 8
Made six important saves as Rayo grew into the game in the second half. Madrid's attacking output will get most of the attention, but Courtois was still required to intervene regularly and delivered when called upon.
Denzel Dumfries — 7
Defended well on the wing and finished with three tackles. Nearly added a goal with a towering header from an Arda Güler set piece. A solid contribution at both ends.

Real Madrid returned to winning ways in La Liga with a 4-1 home victory over neighbours Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
José Mourinho would not have been happy with Madrid's second-half display, but they had enough of a cushion thanks to Kylian Mbappé's penalty and goals from Alvaro Carreras and Jude Bellingham in the opening period.
Sergio Camello pulled one back early in the second half, and Thibaut Courtois was a busy man for a period, but Mbappé made sure of the points in stoppage time.
Real suffered their first defeat of the campaign last Friday when they were beaten by Real Betis before they saw off Inter Milan in the Champions League in midweek.
Diego Moreira scored twice in three minutes as AC Milan came from two down to draw 2-2 at Lazio, who dropped points in Serie A for the first time this season.

Kylian Mbappe has been scoring goals for fun for both Real Madrid and France over the past few years.
Unfortunately for him, though, those goals have not necessarily translated into success for his teams in terms of trophies.
There has been some criticism over whether Mbappe is detrimental to the team's success, but the Frenchman has vehemently dismissed those claims.
In a wide-ranging interview with L'Equipe, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Mbappe has opened up on several major subjects surrounding him and Madrid.
Mbappe did not hide his belief that his performances deserve football's biggest individual prize.

In a long interview with France Football just a few weeks before the Ballon d'Or, Kylian Mbappé opened up about the players who will shape football in the years to come.
Mbappé then revealed a short list and was full of praise for a certain Lamine Yamal.
"To determine the ten to fifteen best players in the world, I think everyone agrees. Among the youngsters? Lamine Yamal. He has everything [...] I really like Estevao, he has a certain creativity. Here, Arda Güler can go very far. Endrick has potential, he's a goalscorer. Warren (Zaïre-Emery), Désiré (Doué), they're going to have great careers, that's for sure," he explained.
It's a gesture that could prove costly for Memphis Depay.
During the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarter-final between Corinthians and Estudiantes, the Dutch forward lost his cool by making an obscene gesture toward the Argentine crowd after his club's equalizer in the second half.

Real Madrid host Rayo Vallecano in what should be a manageable game and a decent opportunity for José Mourinho to make some rotations, as he admitted during the pre-match press conference.
PREDICTED LINEUPS
Real Madrid predicted XI: Courtois; Dumfries, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella; Camavinga, Bernardo Silva; Güler, Bellingham, Vinicius; Mbappé.

Real Madrid are back in domestic action on Saturday, as they prepare to host Rayo Vallecano in La Liga at the Bernabeu. Jose Mourinho's side are aiming to bounce back after their narrow defeat at the hands of Real Betis last weekend, and three points would take them level with arch rivals Barcelona, who are not in action until Sunday.
Real Madrid have been excellent at the Bernabeu so far this season, with three victories out of three and 10 goals scored. They will hope to build on the weekend win over Inter Milan in the Champions League, and they face an opponent in Rayo that have struggled to stop the goals from going in.
Rayo have conceded 10 goals in their opening four La Liga matches, with half of those coming in a 5-2 defeat to Barcelona. Los Franjirrojos are feeling the absence of starting goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, who is currently sidelined with a broken leg, which he sustained against Alaves last month. Dani Cardenas has failed to live up to the Argentine's standards, and if that continues to be the case at the Bernabeu, the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham will be licking their licks.
At the other end, Real Madrid must keep Sergio Camello quiet. The former Atletico Madrid striker has scored five goals in his last three matches, with two of those coming in the aforementioned defeat to Barcelona. However, Rayo will be without talented winger Jorge de Frutos, who was sent off against Racing de Santander last weekend.
It is no surprise that Real Madrid start as heavy favourites, and if they play to their best, they should dispatch Rayo will relatively ease. However, Mourinho will be making it very clear that they cannot take the Vallecas side for granted, as they are capable of causing problems in attack.

Real Madrid have started the new season in excellent fashion, barring one small blip against Real Betis in La Liga.
Despite creating a truckload of chances against the Andalusian side, Los Blancos were unable to find a way past Alvaro Valles in Betis' goal.
Madrid's bright start to the season has to be attributed to the form of their superstars, including Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.
The latter has picked up from where he left off for England at the 2026 World Cup, scoring goals and influencing games for Jose Mourinho's side.
Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have opened active negotiations with Jude over a new contract at the club.

Rayo Vallecano face a daunting trip to the Santiago Bernabeu to take on a wounded Real Madrid this weekend.
Life after Inigo Perez has not been kind to the Vallecas-based club, who have already had to travel to Camp Nou and now face a trip to the home of their city giants.
Speaking ahead of the game (h/t Madrid Xtra), Rayo Vallecano manager Benat San Jose was asked which Real Madrid player he would like to remove from the team before this weekend's game.
Surprisingly, his choice was not Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior or Thibaut Courtois.
Asked which Madrid player he would take out of the upcoming contest, Benat jokingly chose the man sitting on the opposition bench.

Africa has only ever had one Ballon d'Or winner, and the wait for someone to emulate George Weah is likely to be extended further after this year's nominations were revealed.
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi and Senegal forward Sadio Mane are the continent's two names on the 30-strong list.
Both players have previously recorded top-six Ballon d'Or finishes but, after a year in which Spain lifted the Fifa World Cup and Kylian Mbappe netted 10 goals to become the tournament's all-time top scorer, the chances of the Paris St-Germain right-back or the Al-Nassr winger lifting the coveted trophy appear slim.
And it is not the first time that Africa has failed to make a big impact.
Part of the reason for the historic lack of success is down to the fact the award, which was first handed out by France Football magazine in 1956, was not open to players representing non-European nations until 1995.

Ousmane Dembele has backed Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as his three leading candidates for the Ballon d'Or, while insisting that the prestigious award should remain with a Paris Saint-Germain player.
The Ballon d'Or ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on October 26, with several of the world's leading players in contention for the individual prize.
Mbappe is among the most prominent candidates despite Real Madrid ending last season without the major collective honours PSG enjoyed.
The France international's individual production, though, has kept him firmly in the conversation after scoring 42 goals and providing seven ***** ists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
Dembele, the latest Ballon d'Or winner, has now revealed the three players he believes should be competing most strongly for the award.

Real Madrid host Inter Milan in the opening game of the Champions League's Group Stage. Los Blancos are coming off a disappointing loss against Betis, so bouncing back tonight would improve the team's confidence and momentum.
Real Madrid predicted XI: Courtois; Dumfries, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella; Valverde, Bellingham; Brahim, Diomande, Vinicius; Mbappé.
Inter Milan predicted XI: Martínez; Bisseck, Stones, Bastoni; Luis Henrique, Barella, Calhanoglu, Jones, Carlos Ausgusto; Lautaro, Thuram.
Mourinho will have to rebuild his midfield line given that Güler, Camavinga and Bernardo Silva are all out. Bellingham will likely be deployed alongside Valverde in the double pivot, with Brahim and Diomande playing in the attacking line.

These observations — where I look at Real Madrid's history, its players on loan, Castilla, tactical tidbits, and other relevant thoughts — are now a regular thing. All previous editions can be found here.
Here is a new thing I'm committing to this season: Five semi-informal bullet points after each game.
Also, check out last night's post-game podcast where I break down the loss for 34 minutes:
I'm not pushing a panic ******* on. I realize that what I'm about to say will come across as 'low standards', 'acceptance of mediocrity', 'a moral victory', etc — but I will say it anyway and with my chest: If you replay this game 10 more times, Real Madrid wins it 10 times. We just happened to play the freak version where Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty, three big chances, and then Vinicius missed a big chance, Espi had bad luck, and Real Madrid squandered an xG of nearly four. The math checks out: Real Madrid were mostly good but didn't score, somehow. What should've happened was Real Madrid go up one or two goals by half-time, Bellingham and Güler get a deserved ******* ist each, then Real Betis open up in the second half and get cooked. But also, all that to say: Real Madrid didn't deserve to win just because they created more chances, and I just made up a scenario to make myself feel better — possibly because I feel numb to the way the last two seasons have gone. Also: Real Madrid are generally terrible at the Benito Villamarin in the last few years. But, at some point, you have to stop using past precedence as an excuse to lose. How many league ******* les do Real Madrid have in the past 20 years again? Answer: Not enough.
Another Arda Güler masterclass, wasted. He's basically been lights out in every minute he's played in this season. When I have to repeat this after every Arda Güler performance, that's pretty ******* good evidence that he's one of the best players in Europe right now, and certainly, from an ******* ytical standpoint, clearly one of the best creators on the entire continent.

Real Madrid will go back top of La Liga if they avoid defeat to Real Betis on Friday, but the goal will be to claim another victory at the start of the 2026-27 season. Jose Mourinho's side have won three from three so far, although the trip to La Cartuja will be their toughest test.
After a slow start in the narrow victory over Espanyol two weeks ago, Real Madrid have built up steam well in the wins against Real Sociedad and Malaga. Eight goals have been scored across those two matches at the Bernabeu, and the challenge will be to continue that goalscoring form in Seville.
Betis' defence can certainly be got at by Real Madrid, but concern will be the midfield battle. Isco is set to start against his former club, and he will be the talismanic figure that Los Verdiblancos look to play everything through, while Marc Cucurella must also shut down Antony if Mouringo's side are to be successful.
Trips to the green-and-white side of Seville have been difficult for Real Madrid in recent years. 2021 (0-1, Dani Carvajal goal) was the last time a Los Blancos side were victorious in an away fixture against Betis, with three draws and a defeat since. Mourinho will be keen to end this unwanted run on Friday, although it will be easier said than done.
The trio of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe will be Real Madrid's go-tos for this one, and if even two of them are on form at La Cartuja, the chances of the three points returning to the Spanish capital will be high. But it will be just as important to keep things tight in defence too, especially with the quality that Betis have going forward.

Real Madrid's visit to Sevilla to face Betis is not expected to be an easy one even if Manuel Pellegrini's side just lost to Levante 5-2 a handful of days ago. They're always a strong home team, so this could be the first time this season that Madrid truly need to defend at a high level if they want the three points.

José Mourinho will have a depleted squad when his Real Madrid team face Inter Milan next week. Arda Güler, Bernardo Silva and Eduardo Camavinga will all be suspended for that game because of cards they were shown during their last games in the European competition last season, which means that Mourinho will have to think outside the box and deploy a different kind of midfield line in the team's Champions League opener.
If Aurelien Tchouameni is able to make his return from injury in time for that game, Mourinho could use him alongside Valverde in the double pivot. However, the French midfielder hasn't rejoined the squad in training yet and he hasn't completed a single session with Real Madrid's new coaching staff, so his presence in the XI could be premature.
As things stand right now, Mourinho could move Jude Bellingham to the double pivot and play both Brahim and Diomandé with Vinicius and Mbappé in the attacking line. Trent Alexander-Arnold could also be an alternative to that move, albeit a more unorthodox one.

Real Madrid are aiming to make it three wins from three at the start of the 2026-27 season when they host Malaga at the Bernabeu on Sunday evening. Jose Mourinho has made a positive impression since returning to the club earlier this summer, although he will be after a more complete performers against the newly-promoted Andalusians.
It's been a busy eight days for Real Madrid. They started their season last Saturday with a narrow 2-1 win at Espanyol, before a much more convincing victory at home to Real Sociedad on Wednesday. They will hope to complete the week in style, and they are overwhelming favourites to return to La Liga summit with another three points – for a few hours at least.
Two players in particular have made excellent starts to the season for Real Madrid – those being Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe – and they will hope to continue their form against Malaga. The former is off the back of an excellent hat-trick in midweek, while Bellingham has registered one goal and two ***** ists in Los Blancos' first two matches.
For the first time in over eight years, this fixture is being played. Malaga's promotion back to La Liga was welcomed by a lot of Spanish football enjoyers, although they have not made the best start to life in the top flight with one draw (vs Deportivo La Coruna) and one defeat (vs Atletico Madrid) in their opening two matches. They will be massive underdogs at the Bernabeu, but if they are to produce a shock, their man to watch will be star striker Chupe – he scored 25 goals in the Segunda last season, while also netting their only goal of the current campaign against Deportivo last weekend.
Real Madrid will certainly fancy their chances of winning this one, which kicks off at the Bernabeu at 5pm CEST (4pm BST, 11am EDT, 8am PST).

Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham is rediscovering his best form after a season in which he performed below his usual level.
The English midfielder began the campaign with a headed goal against Espanyol last weekend and then produced an excellent display against Real Sociedad, providing two ******* ists, one for Kylian Mbappe and another for Vinicius Jr.
Speaking to Real Madrid's official media, Bellingham discussed his new role and Jose Mourinho's influence on his improved performances at the start of the new season.
"I feel more free again, more free to decide when to drop back, when to stay up or when to get into the box," he explained.
"I think this is the best position for me, the one that allows me to show all my qualities. I'm really grateful to the coach for trusting me to play this way," said the England international.

Real Madrid has already finalized its squad list for tomorrow's match against Málaga CF at the Bernabéu. Los Blancos will be looking to claim three more points in front of their fans in a key league fixture to keep pace at the top of the table.
For this match, coach José Mourinho has decided not to make any changes from the previous outing. The Portuguese manager is backing the same core group that featured in the last matchday against Real Sociedad.
In goal, Thibaut Courtois leads the list of goalkeepers, alongside Andriy Lunin and the young Javi Navarro, perhaps the only switch in the squad. In defense, there is once again a strong list of defenders, featuring names such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Marc Cucurella.
Meanwhile, midfield will retain its usual blend of strength and creativity with players of the caliber of Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva. They are joined by Arda Güler, Cestero and Alexis Ciria, offering further options to Madrid's setup.
In attack, firepower is guaranteed with the presence of Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappé leading the line. The attacking call-up is completed by Brahim Díaz, C. Espí and Yan Diomande, all ready to provide energy from the bench.

Today's sports front pages, August 29, are packed with major talking points: Kylian Mbappé is in the Madrid spotlight after his brilliant start, Barça are looking for tactical solutions after the "Flick Spirit," and Julián Álvarez's situation continues to make headlines ahead of the big Sevilla-Atlético clash.
The newspaper AS devotes its front page to Kylian Mbappé under the headline "MBAPPÉ EYES THE BALLON D'OR", highlighting the French forward's ambitions to win the individual award after his hat-trick against Real Sociedad and his performances for Real Madrid.
The big surprise of the transfer market comes from MARCA with its headline "THE SUMMER'S BLOCKBUSTER", announcing the presentation of Álvaro Morata by CD Leganés.
In the Catalan press, MUNDO DEPORTIVO praises the "FLICK SPIRIT", hailing the dynamism and collective pressing of the Blaugrana side despite not having an out-and-out No. 9.
For its part, SPORT goes a step further and states that "RAPHINHA WILL BE THE '9'" as the main alternative in the German coach's system.

Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick against Real Sociedad was the obvious headline, but there may be a more revealing story behind Real Madrid's strong start to the season.
According to AS, the Frenchman and his teammates have bought into an idea Jose Mourinho has been trying to establish since taking charge: individual success means little without the team moving in the same direction.
Mbappe has never needed reminding of his responsibility in front of goal.
His three goals in Real Madrid's 4-1 win over Real Sociedad were another demonstration of that instinct, but the atmosphere around the squad is also beginning to attract attention.
According to the outlet, old disagreements appear to have been left behind, while the harmony seen during Madrid's first two competitive matches has given Mourinho an encouraging platform to build on.

A head-turning statistic, highlighting the impact of Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé in the club's latest outing, has come to the fore online.
This of course comes after the Frenchman proved himself the star of the show en route to Los Blancos keeping alive a perfect start to the new La Liga campaign.
José Mourinho's troops marked their return to action on Wednesday night, welcoming Real Sociedad to the Santiago Bernabéu for their first home fixture of 2026/27.
The aforementioned Mbappé was in from the off for the evening, hopeful of breaking his duck for the new term after drawing a blank against Espanyol on opening day. And not only did the 27-year-old go on to manage that, but over the course of the 90 minutes, he rattled off a brilliant hat-trick.
Mbappé made his intent clear from the off in the clash, looking hungry for goals and taking aim at the Sociedad net on a whole host of occasions. So much so that the former PSG standout secured for himself a recent piece of La Liga history on Wednesday.

Real Madrid made it back-to-back victories in La Liga, securing a stylish 4-1 win against Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu.
After a cagey first half that saw the scores level, Los Blancos came back from the break and picked apart the Basque club with utmost ease.
A hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe and a goal from Vinicius Junior would have enthralled Bernabeu fans, but there was a more interesting aspect beyond just the goals.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the victory over Sociedad offered perhaps the clearest indication yet of what Jose Mourinho wants from his attack.
Their superstar attacking trio, Mbappe, Vinicius and Jude Bellingham, showed how effective they can be while functioning as a unit.

The Santiago Bernabeu reopened its gates for the first time this season on Wednesday night as Real Madrid took on Real Sociedad in what should have been their first game of the season.
Jose Mourinho made no changes to his starting lineup on the night and preserved the exact core that won against Espanyol – thereby rewarding the XI with continuity.
The players, needless to say, did not let the manager down as they finished the game with a 4-1 win and a dominant show.
Kylian Mbappe netted a wonderful hat-trick while Vinicius Jr. added the cherry on top with a simple finish. All in all, however, the men in white delivered a complete performance across all departments.
Madrid Universal brings you three takeaways from Real Madrid 4-1 Real Sociedad.
