SAN DIEGO (AP) — Federal wildlife authorities are investigating after a video appeared to show a person kicking a protected sea lion at a beach in California.
A spokesperson for the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident but declined to provide additional details Sunday.
The video appears to show a person throwing kicks at the sea lion at La Jolla Cove in San Diego as at least one other person can be heard laughing in the background. The person follows the sea lion, throwing more kicks at the animal as it tries to scoot away before the video ends.
"NOAA Fisheries' Office of Law Enforcement is investigating reports of a video on social media that shows an interaction between an individual and sea lion, allegedly in La Jolla Cove," a spokesperson for the agency said. "In the video, the individual appears to be kicking the sea lion. This is an ongoing investigation, and we cannot provide further details at this time."

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE:TMO) saw its share prices increase by 8.71 percent on Thursday to close at $572.32 apiece, as investors took heart from the strong earnings performance and a series of price target upgrades for its stock.
In the second quarter of the year, the company grew its net income by 7 percent to $1.736 billion from $1.617 billion in the same period last year, while revenues increased by 10 percent to $11.99 billion from $10.85 billion year-on-year, thanks to its strong PPI Business System and growth strategy, among others.
Among its launches during the period include the next-generation Orbitrap platforms with AI-driven ******* ytics, which support researchers to study complex biology across multiomics, structural biology, biopharma characterization and small-molecule ******* ysis on a single system; help scientists to identify hard-to-detect molecules in drug development; and improve workflow flexibility, speed and reproducibility for molecular biology laboratories.

This is the ninth in a 10-part series of questions facing the Buffalo Bills as they head into training camp at St. John Fisher University.
One of the many things the safety tandem of Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde delivered for the Buffalo Bills during their tenure together was their innate ability to make game-altering plays, namely in the area of turnovers.
They played side-by-side in Sean McDermott's defense for seven seasons and during that time they combined for 38 interceptions, 11 forced fumbles and 10 recoveries, and there were another two picks, three forced fumbles and a recovery in the postseason.
This year, with veteran playmaker CJ Gardner-Johnson joining emerging Cole Bishop in the back end of new coordinator Jim Leonhard's defense, the Bills are hoping they can get a few more big plays from the safety position.
Bishop enjoyed a stellar second NFL season, his first as a full-time starter, when he made three interceptions, two sacks, broke up seven passes and was in on a team-high 85 tackles.

Tonight's A's starter is 28-year-old lefty Jacob Lopez. He throws a low-90s fastball, a slider, cutter, change and sinker. When he fools hitters, he's good at minimizing hard contact, but he doesn't fool them often enough and he walks a lotta guys, which equals a 6.64 ERA (and 5.77 FIP) for this season.
The reasons the A's left Oakland are complex, but here's the very simple version: John Fisher is a useless failson s**theap who wants as much public money as he can possibly get, because he sucks.
The slightly longer version? The Oakland Coliseum was an old-ish building in poor repair (several instances of raw sewage in the dugouts, a much cuter invasion of feral cats), and — more importantly — featured very little in the way of luxury/premium seating. The team had wanted a new building since at least 2001, and had floated the idea of leaving the city altogether but staying in the Bay Area. A notion of moving to San Jose (40 miles away) was nixed by the Giants, who had territorial rights there; one of moving to to Fremont (25 miles away) was nixed by the city of Fremont.
The A's signed a 10-year lease renewal in 2014, with the understanding that the team would seek a new stadium in the same county as Oakland. The team proposed several dumb, greedy ideas which were shot down, and eventually useless failson Fisher got his heart set on part of Oakland's Howard Terminal. The city was half willing to work with him on that one, since they had their own ideas about redeveloping the area, but there were significant problems including interference with other industries, infrastructure costs, environmental concerns, inevitable sea level rise, and so on.
Still, when the city and the team were only about $100 million apart on a $12 billion project, the deal fell apart in 2023. Useless failson Fisher announced he would be moving the team to Las Vegas. There's lots of details behind this, but the best explanation came from the then-mayor's chief of staff: "I don't think he [Fisher] got cold feet. I think he got an accountant."

LAS VEGAS (AP) — An investment group that includes ex-Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has bought a minority stake in the Athletics in anticipation of their move to Las Vegas in 2028.
Thursday's announcement by Harbinger Sports Group did not say what percentage of the Athletics it had acquired. Cuban, who maintains a minority stake in the Mavericks, is the general partner and president of the Atlanta-based group. Atlanta Falcons minority owner Rashaun Williams is the founder and chief investment officer.
Co-founder and CEO Steve Cannon is vice chairman of AMB Sports and Entertainment that oversees Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the Atlanta Falcons. Managing partner Jonathan Mariner is the former chief financial officer for Major League Baseball.
"We are minority investors looking to make our investors a lot of money," Cuban said.
John Fisher is the majority owner of the A's and is overseeing construction of a $2 billion, 33,000-capacity domed stadium on the Las Vegas Strip.

Norwich City are not interested in selling any of their first team players, says head coach Philippe Clement.
Full-back Kellen Fisher has been linked with a possible move to Premier League newcomers Hull City and missed Wednesday night's goalless draw at AFC Wimbledon in the Canaries' latest pre-season friendly.
"It's very simple, in a game we played yesterday (Tuesday) he jumped and landed on a team-mate and twisted his ankle so he was not able to play," Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk.
"It's clear for all the players, there is a clear plan - ***** ody will leave who is a potential starting 11 player. I know it's the time of the year where there are no games and no big stories so people like to make stories but there are no stories about that."
Norwich finished ninth in the Championship last season, having been in the relegation zone when Clement replaced Liam Manning as head coach in November and the Belgian has made it clear they are not looking to sell any first choice players.

The first-place Tampa Bay Rays (58-42) will look to make it three straight this week against the struggling Toronto Blue Jays (46-55) tonight at Rogers Centre. July 14 (Reuters) - The Trump administration was sued on Tuesday by nine environmental groups that said its recent decision to rescind a more than 50-year-old definition of "harm" imperiled wildlife.
In a complaint filed in Seattle federal court, the groups challenged determinations on July 10 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service that "maintaining a freestanding definition of 'harm' is unnecessary," and degrading a habitat does not qualify under the Endangered Species Act as an illegal "take" of endangered and threatened wildlife.
Rescinding the definition of harm violates that law's plain language, defies reason, is arbitrary and capricious, and should be overturned, the complaint said.
The Trump administration has scaled back a variety of environmental initiatives and standards, including by reducing government support for clean energy and repealing an Obama administration-era scientific finding that climate change threatens public health.

The Buffalo Bills are at a peaceful point in the offseason following a chaotic spring of change.
Soon enough, the Bills will take the field for training camp at St. John Fisher, and the quiet will be replaced by the sounds of 90 bodies trying to work their way onto the final roster in September.
Buffalo seemingly shocked the NFL by firing long-time head coach Sean McDermott and replacing him with offensive coordinator Joe Brady. The Bills then filled their defensive coordinator vacancy by naming Jim Leonhard to the coaching staff.

ATTICA—Pendleton Heights junior Zach Zoeller continued his recent hot streak with a victory Monday on the Indiana Golf ****** ociation's Junior tour.
Zoeller defeated Zach Kinzer from Fishers on the second playoff hole to earn a victory at Harrison Hills after the pair had finished 36 holes deadlocked at 146 (+2).
The 2026 Madison County medalist, who had built on his strong showing at the IHSAA State finals last month with runner-up and fourth-place finishes in his last two outings, was tied with Jack Lantz from Fort Wayne after a one-under par 71 in the first round.

Over the last couple of weeks, the Los Angeles Lakers have been making what has thus far been a quick and painless transition from the LeBron James era to the true start of the Luka Doncic era. James officially decided to leave the Lakers in free agency on June 30, and the team moved swiftly to trade for center Walker Kessler and nab guards Quentin Grimes and Collin ***** ton, big man Sandro Mamukelashvili and center Kevon Looney in free agency.
There are quite a few Lakers fans who have been doing back flips ever since James decided to bid farewell to the Purple and Gold. It may be a breath of fresh air in some ways for the franchise, but the 41-year-old did play eight years for it and make it relevant again upon his arrival in 2018, not to mention leading it to the NBA championship in 2020.
Derek Fisher, who won five NBA ***** les alongside Kobe Bryant, told Yahoo Sports Daily that he doesn't understand why Lakers fans don't appreciate James' time with the team more than they do.
"A lot of people in L.A. didn't love LeBron's time here and it's been confusing to me," Fisher said. "The reaction to him deciding not to return to L.A., a lot of people have celebrated it and almost had a parade as though this is the greatest thing ever. I'm not saying this is doomsday for the Lakers by any means. I think the organization will be fine, it's been here for 80 years, it'll be fine. But, I'm surprised at the reaction for sure and yeah, I think people have moved on, a lot of fans have."

"A lot of people in L.A. didn't love LeBron's time here and it's been confusing to me," Fisher said. "The reaction to him deciding not to return to L.A., a lot of people have celebrated it and almost had a parade as though this is the greatest thing ever. I'm not saying this is doomsday for the Lakers by any means. I think the organization will be fine, it's been here for 80 years, it'll be fine. But, I'm surprised at the reaction for sure and yeah, I think people have moved on, a lot of fans have."
Fisher was then asked why fans didn't embrace James the way they embraced previous Lakers greats.

MASINLOC, Philippines, July 10 (Reuters) - The Philippines may have won a landmark victory against China's claims in the South China Sea 10 years ago, but today local fishermen have become too afraid to venture out to Scarborough Shoal and its prized fishing waters for fear of harassment by Chinese vessels.
The shoal, one of Asia's most hotly contested maritime areas, has been under China's de facto control since 2012. In 2016, an international tribunal — the Permanent Court of Arbitration — ruled Beijing's sweeping maritime claims had no basis under law.
The waters at the shoal, which China calls Huangyan Dao, are traditional fishing grounds shared by multiple nations, including the Philippines, China and Vietnam, the tribunal said. It did not rule on which country had sovereignty over the shoal.
Many fishermen from the coastal town of Masinloc used to go to the shoal at times when they thought Chinese vessels might not be there such as at night. Now they don't even do that, saying that China has only increased its efforts to block them and chase them away.

LeBron James’ free agency is one of the biggest stories this offseason, following his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, and it seems that the Purple and Gold fans are more than happy to see him leave after an eight-year stint.
During an appearance on Yahoo Sports Daily, former NBA guard Derek Fisher shared his thoughts on why hardcore Lakers fans never fully accepted James, unlike some of the club’s legends, including the late Kobe Bryant.

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Braydon Fisher is remembering his father, Norm, who died on Monday in California, where he was visiting friends in advance of the Blue Jays-San Francisco Giants series.
"He was an amazing person," Fisher, 25, said. "I've heard you say this about myself, and he always loved when you all said this, but there was never a bad day for Norm. His name was Norm. There was never a bad day for him. He was always happy, cheerful and willing to help anybody. He loved people. He did everything as perfectly as you could. He was very proud of what he had."

It appears as if Nielsen is preparing to find yet another way to keep sports viewership trending upward ahead of the upcoming football season.
The audience-measurement firm, whose data is treated as the gold standard within the television business and is the currency by which networks sell advertising to media buyers, plans to formally roll out a new co-viewing initiative “as soon as September,” according to a report by Eric Fisher in Front Office Sports. The news comes after Nielsen piloted the co-viewing program during the month of February, measuring major sporting events like Super Bowl LX, the Olympics, the NBA All-Star Game, the Daytona 500, and the State of the Union. Across those events, Nielsen found that its updated co-viewing methods added 4.19% to total viewership.
Co-viewing, in layman’s terms, is when several people watch a telecast together in the same room. Nielsen’s new methodology introduces a wearable device that members of Nielsen households use to help determine how many viewers are in the room watching a given telecast. Previously, Nielsen households had to manually log the number of viewers in a room.
Since 2020, Nielsen has introduced a number of major methodological changes, all of which have had the effect of raising viewership data compared to historical norms. First, Nielsen began including out-of-home viewing measurements into its top-line data after years of reporting the number separately. Several years later, Nielsen expanded these out-of-home measurements, which initially reached just two-thirds of the country, to reach the entire contiguous United States. Shortly after, Nielsen implemented “Big Data” into its measurements, which collects data from millions of connected televisions and incorporates that data into its traditional panel measurements. The co-viewing change would mark the fourth major methodology shift in six years.
“This is obviously complex stuff, but our goal is still very simple: we want to be as accurate as possible, and this is the next iteration of Big Data,” Nielsen’s head of global sports, Seth Ladetsky, told Front Office Sports.
